The Memorable Journey ofthe Classof 2016

Francois van ZylHow do we measure five years in the life of a Paul Rooser? Do we measure these according to the amount of

games we played, the times we sang our hearts out to help the first team score that one final life-or-death try, or the joyful Jolla Bollas we did after great victories? Or do we measure them by the small things: the music that plays from the SC-Room during a lazy Friday break; the times you have to stand quad because you forgot to cut your hair before assembly; walking through the hallowed hallways of our school and hearing the laughter that echoes from Mr. Pieterse’s or Mr. Gillion’s classrooms? one-dimensional characters flail and flounder around the screen amidst their digital counterparts, wielding sword and knives and shields, while roaring like the iconic MGM lion itself.

Ben-Hur has moved and stirred audiences because of its bold parallels and literal narrative intertwining with the story of Jesus. For all its brashness, William Wyler’s 1959 movie handled Jesus’s dramatic presence in the story relatively obliquely.

This is very much not the case here with Bekmambetov’s adaptation of a cinematic classic.

The Wyler classic was famous for the terrifying blades that came out

of the chariot wheels to carve up your opponents. And what happens this time? How about those knives? Well, it’s entirely in line with the film’s toothless dullness that this gadget goes missing along with much else. After this, Christ’s crucifixion – the greatest tragedy in the entire movie –

simply appears as an anticlimax. In my opinion, the biggest

tragedy is rather the way in which Bekmambetov managed to completely obliterate every single characteristic for which the 1959 version stood for: passion, pride, perfection and true cinematic greatness.

The 57th presidential elections are right around the corner and it is still very unclear as to whom President Obama will be handing the baton to. The two candid ates in contest are multimillionaire Donald Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

For many people, these elections are the typical example of having to choose between the worst of two evils. This notion, to my mind, however, should not be entertained. Yes, both candidates have flaws, but so does everyone on the planet.

What makes these elections particularly exciting is the fact that Clinton is the obvious safe ball and Trump the loose cannon ...

The problem with Clinton is that the safe option is not always what is best when it comes to running a country. Sometimes there is need of a little bit of fire, as we could

clearly see when the conservative Barrack Obama inspired a Gross Domestic Product of 1.2% - the lowest ever in American history. He also created Obama Care, which was widely controversial. Should Clinton be elected into power we will most probably observe an expansion on Obama Care

and another four years of an alarming low GDP.

Trump promises to “make America great again”, a promise he copied from Ronald Regan in the 1980 election. He has no experience in politics, other than the time he sought, and failed, to win his party’s nomination in the year 2000. This coupled with his celebrity status and semi-extreme ideas are what makes him such a nerve-wracking candidate. When you vote Trump, you are voting for suspense.

He could bring about enormous economic growth, but he could also start World War III if he doesn’t calm down on his foreign policy.

Trump versus Clinton

Daesh, Da'esh, Da'ish, IS, ISIL, Islamic State. At the very heart of all this synonymy lies an evil we have come to know over the past few years. An evil that has spread though our society like a malignant tumor, leaving nothing but death and pain in its wake. This evil is formally known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS for short.

ISIS is a jihadist militant group that follows and enforces a fundamentalist doctrine of Sunni Islam. This doctrine is known as Wahhabi. The group controls a vast landlocked area that includes parts of Syria and Iraq. In 2014 the militant group proclaimed itself a caliphate and named Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as their leader or caliph.

A caliphate has authority over all Muslims Worldwide. The caliph

enforces their authority through the implementation of Sharia Law. This proclamation was widely rejected and criticized by the Muslim Community and the world as a whole.

The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, and pledged their allegiance to Al-Qaeda. It is as a part of this allegiance that newly-formed group participated in the Iraqi insurgency following the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by Western forces. ISIS and Al-Qaeda worked with smaller insurgent groups in the formation of an Islamic State in Iraq in 2006 and in Syria in 2011. A great feud arose between the two groups’ leadership structures when Isis declared Islamic state in Syria and in Iraq in 2014, and the groups have been at odds ever since.

What sets ISIS apart from other extremist organisations is that ISIS is very good at promoting themselves and

recruiting new members from across the world. Propagandist videos are often released showing the graphic but very real execution of prisoners

There is some good news though. Recently, ISIS has announced a state of emergency after the continuous bombing of their leaders and strongholds.

All in all, ISIS is comprised of scared little men who hide behind their banners and balaclavas and have absolutely no respect for the value and beauty of life. ISIS is at the root of many of the world’s biggest problems. They have taken a gentle and loving religion and have used it as a mechanism of violence. ISIS isn’t a Muslim problem, or a Middle Eastern problem. ISIS is a human problem and threatens the well-being of every single person on earth. It is therefore high time that we eradicate these cowards in black to make the world a better place.

The Cowardly Caliphate

This dull, clunking return to one of cinema’s great warhorses lacks all the subtlety, passion and grandeur of its more illustrious predecessors.

The Roman epic with all its legions of extras was once a genre that belonged to the big screen, but CGI has it shrunk to laptop size and this new version of Ben Hur has somehow taken the diminution further still.

The 1959 version used movie audiences all around the globe, as

it bore an aura of perfection. Real human beings, as opposed to the latest version’s digital ones, were used as extras, which also contributed to the movie’s ‘realistic experience’.

But this one, the latest, is a greenscreen Ben Hur and the passion is gone, together with the grandeur of scale.

Bekmambetov’s direction offers nothing in the way of nuance or even of ordinary human light-and-shade: the action-heavy template for a videogame springs to mind as

Two pupils from the Grade 11 German class had the privilege of attending an international study course in Germany during the June holidays. The course was held in the historic city of Dresden, a city which was almost completely destroyed after World War II. Bullet holes still mark the stone walls of the old buildings, and the great city’s

landmarks are scarred with the scorch marks of the flames that tore through the city streets.

The Goethe-Institut, the great benefactor of our German department at Paul Roos Gymnasium, once again showed its incredible generosity by awarding James Roux and Francois van Zyl full bursaries for attending the course.

These bursaries included flight tickets

to Johannesburg, where the boys stayed for three days in order to prepare for their German adventure, travelling expenses for the journey to Germany and back, and the three weeks’ stay in Germany at a youth hostel.

Trips to museums, other cities and landmarks around Germany were also taken care of by the Goethe-Institut. On top of this, both boys received pocket money for the duration of their

trip. All-in-all, the costs concerning the course amounted to more than R100 000 per person, all from the generous pocket of the Goethe-Institut and the German government. Although the main focus of the Pasch-Project, the initiative which enabled our boys to attend the course, is improving young people’s German speaking skills and grammar abilities, the experience consisted of much more than that.

International friendships were forged in the long-extinguished fires of the beautiful city of Dresden, and three weeks have led to relationships which will last for years to come. Paul Roos is incredibly grateful for all the contributions the Goethe-Institut has made to our school in order to create an incredible German department that ensures the continuance of German as a subject at our institution.

Hallo aus Deutschland!

in the air that flows across our school grounds. Only when it’s too late do we realise that we should have heeded their advice.

During their time in our school they have seen countless teachers come and go, they have said goodbye to some of the greatest names to have roamed these hallways, and they have seen a Sanctuary of Excellence achieve great milestones. They had the privilege of seeing the end of the 150 Years festivities, and of beating Grey College on our very own Markötter in 2015. They walked through these hallways with legends like Mr. Van Vuuren and Ma’am Smit. Paul Roos history is intertwined with every aspect of their lives at this school.

The Class of 2016 has produced many great achievers. This year three of our first team squad members were selected for the SA Schools rugby team: Ben-Jason Dixon, Damian Willemse and Jesse Johnson. Andrew Hobson also led our hockey First Team through a season of victory, and was selected for the South African U/18 Hockey and U/21 squads.

Jan-Hendrik Duminy has owned the academic year thus far, and all eyes are on him to see what he will be able to pull off at the end of this year. Christophe Cronjé led the first soccer team to a final victory against Grey College, and made every football fanatic proud.

And now, just like that, the journey has come to an abrupt end. In the blink of an eye, the school gates close behind them for one last time, and just like that, they are no longer in Paul Roos. But do not fear. Paul Roos will always remain in them. Every memory shall forever stay with you, and the brotherhood will never cease to exist. Bonds will not be severed, but they shall continue to be strengthened by the love we share for each other, and for this school, no matter where you find yourself.

We wish you the best of luck, class of 2016.

GODS OF BRAID STEAL THE SHOW

Me.

“We stay young as long as we keep learning, acquire new habits, and tolerate disagreement”, lui die Engelse gesegde.

Thomas Moss is Paul Roos se eie straatkunstenaar.

Out with the old! In with the new! This was the mindset for

the new wind band of Paul Roos. Under the leadership of Renaldo Wales, the group set their sights on every eisteddfod manageable and made sure that people will not likely forget them. They made their debut at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod in the open section and walked away with an A. At the Tygerberg Eisteddfod they took part in the Jazz section and scored an impressive 85%. Much is still planned for this new group, including a Sing and Rejoice! concert on the 27 of November. The wind band will join forces with Stringendo of Bloemhof and Musica Perpetua. Old boy Aiden Lewis will also feature at this festive event.

so blink soos al hulle trofees.

’n Harde Applous vir ons koor!

As always, the annual music evenings held in the Japie Krige Hall won hands down in the cultural events to-do list of Paul Roos Gymnasium. These two shows are staged especially for the benefit of music students in order to give them exposure and performing experience. From the 13 to 15 September, family and friends flocked to the hall for an evening of lights, music, fun and laughter. And with a theme like New York! New York! not much less was expected. Culture at Paul Roos has grown dramatically over the last few years, with the new music

block as the most obvious

improvement. This has inspired the biggest music evening as of yet, as well as the most entertaining. The stars of the evening were (debatably) pianists Erkin Asefi and Jean-Louis Swart with their performance of Bohemian Rhapsody – but Daniel Louw on electric guitar stole the show straight out of their hands with his take on Boys on the Run. The grand finale was performed by the music staff with their rendition of the jazz classic New York New York. One performance that not many will forget would be the Marimba groups. All in all, this concert was great entertainment and certainly a cultural

highlight of the year.

New York, New York!

These little town blues are melting away...

Stellenbosch is a town divided in various ways. One thing that currently divides you and me, dear Paul Rooser, is that we live on different sides of the Eersterivier. Soon you will likely also cross the river for good and begin a life at university. Possibly you are feeling uncertain about what your future holds. Will I be OK? How will I ever leave behind what I have now? What is next?

My hope is to show you three stones to step on when crossing the river so as to not fall in the water.

They have served me well and they should do the same for you.

Opportunities multiply when seized.

Think about all the things you do and all the people with whom you are friends. I’ll bet that most if not all of those things are as a result of your being in Paul Roos. Because you have seized the opportunity to go to Paul Roos, many more

opportunities have come your way. The same is true for opportunities

later in life. Think about why you can say yes to things rather than no. Say yes to things outside your comfort zone, because that is where the magic happens.

People matter more than things. When I was editor of Semper,

our editorial team was planning to put a particularly scandalous story in the notorious Dorings aan die Roos column. While hilarious for us, it would have hurt the person it was about. The guy in question found out about it and asked me to remove the story. Initially I refused, thinking it would diminish the quality of the article. I was then

given this advice. I decided eventually to take it out and I am still grateful that

I did. To this day I have a great relationship with him. This would not have been the case if I had remained stubborn. Always choose people over things. Don’t burn bridges. Ever.

Be where you are. Wherever you are in your life,

appreciate that phase. Don’t wish that you were older. That time will come in due course. Similarly, don’t cling to where you were at the expense of living in the moment. This is especially difficult for all of us after

we leave school.

Don’t be that Old Boy that

still gets drunk at a Friday night hockey

match with little else going on in his life. I am not saying don’t be a loyal supporter of Paul Roos sport once you leave school. Definitely hold on to your PRG identity, because it’s something very special. But dare to also reinvent yourself and add new layers to your identity.

Those are my stepping stones to you, dear Paul Rooser.

May you not long for the future nor cling to the past. May you be where you

are. And may you cross the

Eersterivier with a steady tread one day.

Eerstens moet jy jou afspraak gaan maak.

Dié webtuiste is: http://apps.facebook.com/passyour-

Societas se normale weeklikse projekte sal in 2017 soos normaal voortgaan.

Johan Schoeman

On 18 August 2016 Richard Murray, a Paul Roos Old Boy, came fourth in the men’s triathlon in Rio de Janeiro during last month’s Summer Olympic Games. By doing so, Murray overcame all odds and proved to the world that through hard work and sheer determination anything can be done, irrespective of how impossible the situation may seem.

Murray was only just denied a medal by compatriot and close

friend Henri Schoeman in what was regarded as one of highlights of the Games.Richard Murray was

born in Cape Town and has spent most of his 27 years

in and around

the

Western Cape area.

Murray has had his fair

share of success since he left Paul Roos. Murray won the Junior ITU Duathlon

World Championships in 2007 and 2008, entered the adult Tri in 2009, and was the Under-23 African champion in both triathlon and duathlon in 2010, and was the elite African triathlon champion in 2011 and 2012. He scored his first win in the ITU World Triathlon Series in Hamburg in 2012. Murray also finished 17th overall in 2012’s London Olympics.

Disaster struck, however, when Murray crashed out of the World Triathlon Series race in Gold Coast, Australia in April this year. During the bike leg of the race, Murray was involved in a crash that had him end up in hospital with a broken collar bone. Doubt was immediately cast over whether the South African would be ready to race in Rio.

Murray prove everybody wrong

when he ran the 10km running leg of the Olympic triathlon in a mere 30 minutes and 24 seconds. This was later confirmed to have been the fastest time of any athlete in the running stage.

Murray has said to reporters that although he is very happy with his fourth place finish, he feels that he could have performed better in the swimming and running stages of the race. He also added that he is extremely proud of South African Henri Schoeman who surprised even himself by snatching a bronze medal ahead of Murray.

Semper would like to wish Richard all the best with the coming season. We look forward to seeing him compete in Tokyo in 2020. Richard Murray is an inspiration to us all. He certainly does his alma mater proud.

finale rondte: Thomas Butler. In die Afrikaans-olimpiade het

8 Paul Roosers deelgeneem.

Kobus Meyer

EDITORIAL

“Hoe besluit jy waaroor om elke keer te skryf?” vra iemand my onlangs.

Ek huiwer, want dalk wil hy iets meer betekenisvol hoor as “Die skool lei my”, of

“Wêreldbekommernisse bepaal my woorde”.Maar dis die waarheid, want in dié kolom gee

Since I wrote my previous editorial, world

history has been made once again. Brexit happened, Britain now has a female prime minister for the first time after Margaret Thatcher, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are still battling it out to become the next president of the United States (see page 2), and more than a hundred people died in cruel terrorist attacks in some of the world’s biggest

But what will be, will be. And what must

happen, will happen. Ek sluit my termyn as redakteur van dié spogpublikasie af met die

eenvoudige woorde, “Enjoy the moment!”

IN PERSPEKTIEFHere we are. At the end of another great year in the famous Paul Roos Gymnasium. Traditionally, this time is used to reflect on the events of the past year to determine the level of

success that has been achieved. As the head boy of the school I have the

privilege of doing this. When I look back at the year that has passed

there is one thing that clearly stands out for me. It is not a great rugby season, or brilliant academics or even great discipline. For me it is something even more valuable than that – our loyalty towards each other and towards Paul Roos. Quite fittingly, our student council motto for the year has encouraged precisely that: “Often tested, always loyal, brothers forever.” Prophetic words that have been, and will

continually prove to be true.“Often tested…” Before it became a year of

loyalty and success, 2016 was a year of much adversity and many tests. These challenges and tests come in all shapes and forms. Some were

public, damaging the reputation of our school. Newspaper articles about drug abuse in our school, accusations of discrimination in our acceptance policy, a few poor first team rugby losses. Others were on a more personal level, those things that only you know of and can testify about. These are tests of doing your best when you play on the hockey, rugby or soccer field in the maroon jersey – to strive after the school’s standard of excellence. Only you will know whether you were loyal to yourself and to

Paul Roos in the face of these tests. “Always loyal…” This refers to what we have

achieved as a school, and will continue to achieve in years to come. The day when you receive your cap and tie in Grade eight is the day you become a Paul Rooser. On that same day you commit to staying loyal to a proud institution of excellence. You make a commitment to fight for and to take pride in the values that it stands for. I saw this kind of fight and passion in our PRG family this year. We can look back

at many events during 2016 when this loyalty, accompanied by passion, was displayed. It has been seen in the sporting fixtures, in the gees, in the service of the various committees and the student council, in the support of the Second Milers and most evidently at Bloemfontein, at

our final interschools fixture of the year. “Brothers forever…” This is and was and

will always be our ultimate goal as a school: to become and to remain brothers. Boys, the matrics of 2016 and I are about to leave this school we love so dearly, and on our last school day you will see us weep tears of joy and of sorrow. Tears of joy and gratitude for being part of a school that has shaped our characters, and tears of sorrow because our time with our Paul Roos brothers has come to an end. In a couple of years’ time it will be you and your classmates who will have to bid Paul Roos farewell. Make sure, when it happens, that you can look back and be satisfied with how you have used your

time in Paul Roos.

“Often tested, always loyal, brothers forever”.

gesels. "Men of the world are loved by the

Hoe sal hy in elk geval weet?

Instagram determines your popularity. Some people agree with this statement, but most of our generation will deny this. “Social Media has taken over our lives” are words we hear every day. Some people will try to prove this statement false, but Instagram is the platform according to which you are judged. Before someone even knows you, he or she already has a preformed idea of you, based on your Instagram followers and average number of likes for your photos.

With this article, we are giving you a crash course on how to strengthen your account:

“Which photo to post?” is the question most often asked.

Simple solution: Eliminate the worst photos until you have your best three options. After that, ask a third party which photo he or she prefers. This will

give you a new perspective.Don’t edit your photos too much. Stick to the original. Less is more and

shows character. Probably the most important aspect of

an Instagram post: The caption. Captions are what people remember.

Stay away from cheesy captions. Use hardcore one-liners. Scholars already have to read too much because of the curriculum; don’t punish them with a caption that’s longer than an English FAL poem.

Hashtags are the make-or-break factor for social acceptance.

More than two hashtags will automatically degrade your social image.

Post your photo on Insta-peak times. The ultimate time to do it is on a Sunday night between 20:00-22:00, when everyone has hit a depro.

Don’t post photos too often. One photo every two weeks is more than

enough – otherwise you will irritate people.

Get “Instagram Statistic Apps” – these apps will tell you who is not following you, who does not like your photos, and most importantly – who is your most dedicated stalker. Use these apps wisely. Apps which are a no-go, are those that buy your likes. People immediately know when you are “cheating” on Instagram.

Giving “likes” to people are for free, so don’t hold back and give the person the benefit of the doubt, and like their photo. Be awake, and do not like a photo posted more than three days ago, otherwise you might just look like a stalker.

The world is tough out there, so take it or leave it …

Beware! You are being judged according to your account.

YvonneV stel egter net

belang in ’n strepies-blazer en admaths-punte. JanBlap hoop egter hy kry iets reg.

ChantelC kla

egter nie. BarretdW is duidelik ’n langafstandatleet.

Margo was nie seker of hulle besig was Bofbal of Polo nie.

CarlaN is gelukkig oud genoeg vir ‘n FreeHug. JanBlap hoop maar net

dit is nie waar dit stop nie.LizeC het intussen haar tyd by

Through The Learners’ Eyes

Jaco Marais

Leadership can be a very tough and demanding task. Plans for next year are already underway by the new Student Council under the leadership of our head boy, George Huysamer and two deputy head boys, Marais Cloete and Dillon Ribeiro. Semper went and found out a bit more about our head boy, George, a skilful first team hockey player and exceptional leader.

What do you like to do in your free time/ any hobbies you have?

When I have free time, I enjoy spending time reading investigation or autobiography books, Playing video games or just relaxing with friends over weekends. I’m also a football fanatic so most free time on weekends is spent watching the Premier League and when football isn’t on, I enjoy being outside and staying fit.

What is your favourite Paul Roos song?

Definitely Old Boys because of the goose bumps you experience while singing it, but more recent songs like “Will Griggs” (Paul Roos on fire) has definitely started to become

favourites of mine. What is something interesting about

you that few people know?I have 3 siblings, one of whom is in

Paul Roos. I’m a die-hard Chelsea fan and self-proclaimed FIFA pro. Most of my holidays are spent in Vleesbaai, a small seaside village close to Mossel Bay. My favourite food is hamburgers and I love Bar-Ones.

What is your view on hard work, talent and luck in life, and which one do you have?

This is extremely complex, but I’ll try my best to explain it as I see it. Our

lives are based on chasing our own personal success, which means different things to different people. Whether your definition of success is becoming a professional sportsman or a lawyer, talent will only take you so far. Thousands of talented people don’t achieve their

goals; they must convince themselves of their talents, experiment and

develop them to translate this into bigger things.

In terms of hard work, my mind jumps to the famous 10 000 hours principle. In this modern age we live in, hard work is something we hear about and we think that if we do the things famous people say we should, we will be successful, which is not the case. The quotes are true, but hard work is pushing yourself above and beyond what you’re used to. It’s the sacrifice, plan, drive

and motivation you put in to reach your goals. It’s the basis of everything we want to achieve and by applying a little bit of focus and intensity to work towards something great you will achieve true hard work.

What is the most important characteristic for leadership in your opinion?

A visionary leader should have the ability to stay focused on the vision and the compelling cause they wish to work towards. Therefore two of the most important characteristics of a leader are having conviction which means having a vision, believe in it and work towards it. Another important characteristic is to empower those around you; a visionary leader can honour and dignify those around him.

What are your plans for after school?I plan to study either business or law at

Stellenbosch after school and hopefully get the chance to study abroad in Australia, New Zealand or England.

Who is a big role model for you and why?

My biggest role model is my dad because of the way he conducts himself in every situation life presents to him as well as his constant support. Other role models include Justin de Nysschen, Frank Lampard and AB de Villiers

What are 3 tips to Paul Roosers to be better gentlemen?

Being a gentleman is a matter of choice and you should always do the small things properly: Firstly, a gentleman has the ability to listen, secondly, a gentleman must always keep his word and thirdly, a gentleman will always make sure a woman is safe and walk with her if she needs you to.

Getting to know your head boy

To the new Student Council: The baton is in your hands now. You decide which course the school takes. Don't be afraid to try something new or something different. However, never drift away from the core values which have made this school the astonishing conveyer belt of exceptional men that it is.

For the Matrics: next year offers a wealth of opportunities, but also enormous challenges to the person you are and to what you believe in. Remember that wherever you go, you will always be a representative of thousands of Paul Roosers before you.

You may be able to leave Paul Roos, but it will never leave you. The prestige, awe and expectation of being a Paul Rooser will follow you wherever you go – for better or for worse.

Good luck lads. May you always remember the memories we made, the laughter we shared and the Gees at Markötter.

Five years pass too quickly, but I would not share them with anyone but you.

Paul Roos: Good bye, you enchanting old institution.

Maroon to the Marrow. For ever and ever.

Sport plays a huge part in the life of almost every Paul Rooser, whether it be hockey, rugby, cricket, tennis or any of the many other sports offered by our school. A sport very few people practice or in fact know about that has massive potential in Paul Roos is called slacklining. Slacklining involves walking on a tensioned line between two fixed points, usually between two trees. The line or webbing is usually between 1 and 2 inches wide and 3 millimeters thick. Although similar in principle to tight rope walking, slacklining differs in the sense that the line sags and sways as you walk across it, because it’s not as taught a tightrope wire. This is where the sport derives its name from – slacklining.

Although the act of balancing on a suspended rope has been around since the dawn of time, modern slacklining as it is known today was started in the 80s by Adam Grosowsky and Jeff Ellington in Yosemite National Park. The pair of rock climbers started experimenting with the sport as a past time when they weren’t climbing. The hobby soon took over their lives however, as they were gripped by the fascinating sport and the lifestyle associated with it. Since those early days the sport has developed a great deal, with many different styles, techniques and discipline evolving over time. Examples of different slacklining disciplines include trick lining, long lining and high lining.

Tricklining involves doing flips, twists and somersaults on a shorter line no more than 30m long. The webbing used is generally around 10cm wide and very bouncy. Annual World Championships are held by the World Slacklining Federation. Contestants compete by completing a routine of acrobatic moves on the line. These are then judged and scored.

Another popular slacklining discipline is longlining, whereby slackliners attempt to cross lines in excess of 50m. Longlines are most often erected in parks or on sports fields. The longlining community is constantly trying to walk further, with the current world record for the longest slackline ever walked at 1km. This incredible feat was achieved by Nathan Paulin on 19 April 2016, when he walked across the La Clue d’Aiglun gorge in France.

By far the most breathtaking discipline of the sport is highlining, where slackliners attempt to walk between cliffs or over canyons and ravines. Of all the slacklining disciplines, highlining is by far the most expensive. Instead of tying the line to a tree, lines often have to be bolted into the rock face due to a lack of adequate natural anchors. Complex braking systems and failsafes have to be rigged to ensure the safety of the slackliner and these safety measures often prove very expensive.

If crossing canyons or doing somersaults on a very narrow line sounds a little too extreme for your liking, don’t panic. The majority of slackliners practice the sport in its simplest form – a line erected between two trees on a grassy field – the way it is meant to be practiced.

Slacklining has massive potential in Paul Roos Gymnasium both as a sport and as a pastime. Slacklining injuries are few and far between and largely unheard of. Except for the slackline itself, no additional equipment or infrastructure has to be bought or built. Slacklining is a great way of staying fit and exercising your core muscles. Balance obviously plays an important role in the sport and having good balance and a strong core are seen as attributes is most sports.

Slacklining is a sport that can help Paul Roosers connect to nature, to each other and help them focus their minds. Slacklining is a great way of relaxing and suitable for all age groups or body shapes.

It is sport that is easy to like, but even easier to love. You just have to keep your balance and take one step at a time.

Balance is the key

“Hockey” has almost become a synonym for “Paul Roos”. And not for nothing either. The past year was an outstanding year for Paul Roos hockey, especially for the first team.

The first team started off the season with a new coach, and have managed to build on their success of 2015. The team won the Cape Town International Schools Hockey Festival for the second time in a row – a massive achievement in terms of any hockey-playing school.

Paul Roos had 51 boys representing the school in Boland teams on the hockey field during this year – far

more than any other Boland school.Special credit and accolades go to

Andrew Hobson, first-team captain, who, amongst others, was chosen for the SA U/21 hockey team.

One match will not be forgotten very soon: the first-team match against York. The game was very close and it could have gone to any side. With only a minute left, York had the lead with two goals. But by the tome that the final whistle sounded, the score was 6/5 for Paul Roos. Maroon magic at its very best!

The interschools game against Grey College once again had the season ending on a high note with a first-team victory of 3-0.

Another success story

2016 has been a busy year for the water polo club. We are starting to see some decent results amongst the junior sides. This, coupled with a young and hardworking first team, can only mean good things for the

future of Paul Roos water polo. For the first time this year, we

introduced an extensive winter programme for our flagship teams and

saw the first positive results in the form of an astounding 10-1 victory over Grey College in Bloemfontein! The U/19As also achieved 5th place in

the “Vides” tournament, andJan-Corrick van der Watt was

selected to represent the South African U/16B side on tour to Malta. He was chosen as captain on this tour. Jan-Corrick will also represent Maties at this year’s club championships in October.

For members of the Paul Roos 1st Soccer Team, 2016 will go down as one of the most successful years to date.

The team consisted of a group of boys who showed hunger and desire as never seen before to grind out a season of epic proportions.

Soccer was a sport which previously held a comical position at the school, but led by the knowledge and expertise of coach Edmund Pietersen and manager Cobus de Beer, everything has changed.

The team pulled of some stunning results as they reached the plate semi-finals of the Kloof Football tournament for the first time in our history.

Back home they presented some eye-catching results, including wins against Kylemore and Wynberg just to mention a few, as well as valiant performances against local power houses Lückhoff High and Cloetesville High, which forced people to stand up and take notice.

The season was rounded off with perhaps the sweetest victory of them all, as the Maroon Machine beat Grey Bloemfontein by 3 goals to 2, to round off a historic season for Paul Roos football.

The experience gained from the 2016 season has without doubt cemented soccer’s position in the school as a force to be reckoned with.

A QUALITY TEAM

Enigiemand kon aflei wie die beste span was.

By hierdie laaste interskole vir my by Grey Kollege het ek geleer dat mnr.

On Saturday 24 September, Paul Roos, together with BestMed, will be hosting its own cross-country mountain-bike interschools invitational race at Coetzenburg. The Paul Roos team is one well known around the country in the mountain bike world and the first team will be looking to defend their title as Western Province Champs at our very own race.

The event consists out of two categories – one for competition purposes where Western Cape schools will all be racing for the podium, and also a fun relay for anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Schools can pick a team of up to 15 riders with the first 5 riders` results determining the outcome of their school`s effort. The best individual result of each school counts double the score.

The track uses parts of the world-class mountain bike routes at the foothills of Stellenbosch Mountain and has the perfect combination of single track and

jeep track.Although mountain biking entails

individual participation against the other athletes, it is also a team sport where the total points earned by a school are added to crown the winners. Cross country racing, the format in which schools in South Africa compete in, has the ideal mix of searing climbs, twisting downhills and exciting sprints, making it perfect for spectators (not to mention testing a rider’s full array of skills and fitness).

The success and popularity of this event is just another testament to the incredible growth that is witnessed in this sport, globally and in our school.

At this event, the top teams will get prizes and there will be random lucky draws as well.

For more information, or to enter the fun relay in teams of 4, consisting of 4 laps (one lap per rider) go to: www.prgmtb.co.za. Otherwise come and experience something new and support the Maroon Machine as it treads deep tracks in their territory. What is not to love about a life behind bars?

22 August 2015. Markötter. Paul Roos 19-12 Grey College.

The seemingly impossible became possible, the far-off dream, a reality.

2015 will be remembered for years to come as one of the most successful years in the annals of Paul Roos rugby. The year we finally conquered Grey College.

But what makes a champion? A champion is he who vanquishes all before him, again and again and again, because it’s all he knows how to do.

So the question remains, after the season 2016, are we still the champions? And if not, what are we then?

In order to aptly review the season it is necessary to do so from the perspective of those who put this season together, and who better than 1st Team Captain Damian Willemse.

It was another outstanding season from the 18-year-old flyhalf, as he once again proved why he was so instrumental in the success of the Paul Roos, Western Province and South African teams.

Damian has just returned from a Western Province training session as we sit down in front of Roosinbosch to discuss the season past. He has clearly done this before. He chooses his words well as he

paints a picture of Paul Roos rugby in 2016 in vivid detail.

The season began at Markötter against Swartland High School and Paul Roos demolished their opponents, winning 56-0. Paul Roos went on to defeat Windhoek Gymnasium, with winger David Moses scoring a hat trick. According to Willemse these games were merely to create a balanced foundation on which they would build.

Next on the calendar was a trip up north, as Paul Roos competed in the St John’s Easter Festival. The Roos started like a house on fire as the young side romped to a 69-6 victory

against a weary Hilton College. They continued on their merry way until they were halted by a mighty Affies side on the final day in the City of Gold.

Captain Willemse echoes the boys’ disappointment and says that the first loss of the season is most often the most upsetting, but it also gives an indication of which areas should be worked on in order for a

good season to follow.Paul Roos then took

on Grey High School in what Damian describes as a highlight of his season, as the Maroon Machine went on to defeat the Old Foe by 36 points to 21 on the hallowed turf of Markötter.

“...one of the disappointments and outstanding lowlights of our season was without

a doubt losing to Paarl Gym...”

For the second year

running we were pipped by a strong Paarl Gym outfit. Willemse and Moses attribute this loss to silly mistakes which cost the game, a trend which seemed to have followed the side as the season progressed.

Willemse recalls fondly the team’s trip to Wildeklawer, where they returned unbeaten after good wins against HTS Middleburg and Menlopark. He says that a great team culture and spirt was developed during their time in Kimberly.

The team continued this good run of form until they slipped up in Riversdale, losing to a determined Oakdale side, and were completely floored by Boishaai at Markötter, which the captain describes as the outright most disappointing game of the season, and as the only one in which they

were completely outclassed by their opposition.

All hope was not lost as they won their next 3 games against Bishops, Rondebosch and Wynberg, the pick of the results being against the latter: 50-5

Another slip-up against Boland Landbou left much to be desired just before the final game against Grey Bloem.

After a considerably below-average season, which comprised of 5 losses before the ultimate fixture against rivals Grey College, not much hope was given to our first after Grey College had been enjoying a good season.

However on a warm August 20th afternoon Paul Roos Gymnasium produced quite arguably the most honourable performance of the season, and in my opinion, of many seasons

before. The team was without their stars Damian Willemse, Ben-Jason Dixon and Jesse Johnson, who were all away on international duty.

An inspired performance captured the hearts of all those who attended. The boys showed guts and determination like never before and if ever there was a game which epitomised the season that was 2016, it would be this.

So what was the season 2016? It was no golden year, and its players were not winners, oh no.

They were champions. Champions because they stood up and fought to the bitter end, and ultimately succeeded where it mattered most: in the hearts of their faithful.

So a golden year … no.But a year that will forever be

remembered.

The largest school-boy mountain-biking league in the country came to a nail-biting finish on Saturday 24 September at the superb biking track along Stellenbosch Mountain. The sunless sky and overall good setup created perfect conditions. Paul Roos took the top three spots in the U/14 age category (thanks to Matthew Lochner, Krige van der Vyver and Albert Muller,) providing a welcome head start into the day’s events. The U/16s were less successful, but Jamie

Penfold l managed to grab a second place. Paul Roos struggled against an extremely competitive U/19 category. Local hero Robert Hobson won bronze. Paul Roos ended up with equal points to Parel Vallei once the scores had been added up, but due to Parel Vallei achieving more first-place finishes, they won the league. 2016 was a great year for Paul Roos mountain biking, but the greatest challenge still lies ahead in the form of Magaliesberg (the biggest school mountain- biking race in the country).

And now for Magaliesberg
