Access is needed to your water meter
Water meter readings commenced across the region this week and will continue until the end of September. It’s important for all householders to ensure that their water meters are easily and safely accessible.
A simple check that the area surrounding water meters is free from garden vegetation and other obstacles will ensure minimal disruption to gardens and assist with an accurate meter reading.
If meter readers are unable to access a property because of locked gates or animals, a card will be left asking residents to contact the Council to arrange access.
As ratepayers are responsible for water infrastructure located on their property’s side of the water meter, including leaks in pipes or fi xtures, Council encourages residents to regularly check water usage by monitoring the water meter.
From this fi nancial year, Water Notices will only include water consumption
charges.Water Notices are
scheduled to be issued in October 2020 with the due date being 30 days after the date of issue.
Water Notices will be issued in a new and simpler format but the relevant information will still be detailed.
Anyone who is having diffi culties paying their notice is encouraged to contact Council prior to the due date to organise a confi dential payment agreement.
For further information about water meter readings and water consumption, contact Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Businesses reduce water consumptionOver the last 12 months,
local businesses identifi ed as ‘High Water Users’ have buckled down to reduce water consumption and together have saved a staggering 76 megalitres.
Based on June 2020 monthly water usage, this signifi cant saving could supply water to Allora for 15 months or Yangan for three years.
Portfolio Councillor for Water Stephen Tancred applauded the region’s businesses and their staff for adopting water saving practices and incorporating initiatives to optimise water consumption.
“Practical applications generate real results. The combined average daily water consumption by the high water usage businesses has reduced by 15% per day in a one year period – a commendable water saving considering no business was deliberately wasting water in the previous 12 months. The combined water savings total more
than 76 mega litres,” Cr Tancred said.
“Having a Water Eff-iciency Management Plan really does make a difference to a business’s bottom line water consumption.
“Businesses using more than 10 megalitres per annum are required to have such a plan and we currently have 11 in place across the region”.
The development and implementation of Water Effi ciency Management Plans (WEMPs) for large water users will result in long-term water savings across the region. These plans will remain in place until 2024.
Water consumption across the Southern Downs continues to be monitored. Extreme level water restrictions of 120 litres per person per day currently apply across the region. Water restrictions will continue to apply whilst water is carted from Connolly Dam to Stanthorpe.

Integria Healthcare’s, CEO Michael Bracka said: “Warwick is providing an excellent community base and skilled workforce for Integria Healthcare. We are fortunate to be
working with Southern Downs Regional Council to continue our investment and expansion in Warwick, even as other companies are having to wind back their capital investment in these

St Pat’s Athletics Carnival
St Patrick’s Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 3rd September.
The size of the school community means that it is possible to do this within the current Covid 19 environment. Hand sanitizer will be available and all families attending are to observe the social distancing required of adults. The day will have the usual events but will not include high jump this year. Normally this event would be held separately in the lead up to the day but this is not possible given the ‘traffi c jam’ of events occurring in the school and community post lock-down.

Seasonal workforce breakthrough a boost for farmers, food supply and economy
Member for Maranoa and Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says the Australian Government has developed a national plan to allow seasonal and Pacifi c workers to fi ll farming’s labour void and help support Australia’s COVID-19 recovery.
“This sensible approach developed by the Australian Government ensures our farmers can keep feeding the nation and supplying the
world,” Minister Littleproud said.
“I have written to state and territory agriculture ministers urging them to work with their colleagues and farmer sector to take advantage of the reopening of the Seasonal Worker Program and Pacifi c Labour Scheme.
“With appropriate state and territory plans and quarantine arrangements in place, seasonal and Pacifi c
workers can safely support farmers facing critical workforce shortages.
“Agriculture is the engine of regional and rural Australia and is an essential industry, contributing $60 billion annually to our GDP.
“Many regions are expecting above average crop production following good rains.
“But farmers can’t fi ll harvest jobs because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, with people prevented from moving across state borders, overseas workers and working holiday makers in scarce supply.
“More than 40 per cent of working holiday makers have departed Australia since the border closures, and while there are still around 8,000 Pacifi c and Timorese workers in Australia, this is nowhere near enough to meet the upcoming harvest needs.
“It is critical farmers have access to labour to
help them capitalise on the favourable conditions and ensure agriculture continues powering Australia’s economy and feeding our nation.
“We are allowing targeted recruitment of labour under the Pacifi c Labour Scheme and Seasonal Worker Programme.
“This decision gives industry certainty so they can plan their workforce needs and know that harvesting our fruit and vegetables can be done at the right time so food doesn’t go to waste.
“There will continue to be rigorous labour market testing to provide Australians with an opportunity to apply for these seasonal jobs fi rst.
“This announcement builds on the visa changes we’ve made to keep temporary workers here longer to support critical sectors like agriculture as the nation recovers from COVID-19.” Minister Littleproud said.

Ratepayers MeetingAt a public meeting of Allora ratepayers, Mayor of the Warwick Shire Bruce Green stated the water meters would be installed in Allora in the next financial year and water will be charged on the user-pays system adopted in other parts of the Shire. The continuing water shortage left the Council with no alternative, he said.In response to ratepayers concerns expressed by Jackie Gallagher, the meeting was assured that there was no intention to close the Council depot or office in Allora and that there had been no Council discussion on the future of the Allora saleyards.

ElectrocutedStephen John Lehmann, a 13 year old Allora schoolboy, suffered a 415 volt electrical shock when he came into contact with the rear of a switchboard while playing in the disused Allora Butter Factory. He was accompanied by his younger brother who raised the alarm with the employees of the Allora Co-op Society next door. Stephen was pulled from the switchboard by his grandfather Vic Lehmann, a Co-op employee, and conveyed to the Allora Hospital where he was treated for burns to the face and hands. He was later transported by ambulance to the Warwick Base Hospital.

Dr. Francis Pain who recently suf-fered a breakdown in health, left Allora after practising there for over 32 years. Due to the condition of his health he was given an informal send-off by a number of prominent citizens in the Shire Hall.Dr. Pain came to Allora in 1887 from an industrial town in the north of England. His practice covered an area from Glengallan to King’s Creek and Goomburra to Talgai which he administered to at all hours of the day and night with a horse and uncovered sulky. He would have encountered
every kind of medical condition and emergency including the accidental death of his own 6 year old son Godfrey in 1897.Dr. Pain and his wife Jessie retired to Sydney but sadly spent the next couple of years trying to recover money owed to him by the people of Allora and district.

TODAY’S QUOTE“A good listener is the wisest of persons.” - WGP
A woman boarded a train with her little pet dog. When she was approached by the ticket inspector she showed him two tickets.
“This one’s for me and this one’s for my dog” she announced, “I’ve paid full fare for him so he’s entitled to a seat like any other passenger.”
“That’s quite right, lady,” replied the inspector “and just like any other passenger, I’ll throw him o the train if he puts his feet on the seat.”
