Guest Speaker, Lt. Col. Tony Cameron is the great, great, great grandson of Allora’s fi rst Town Clerk Alexander Cameron & his wife Esther. In this the 150th year since Allora was proclaimed a municipality; we are honoured to have Tony carry out this role.
Alexander and Esther lived in a home beside St. David’s Church of England. Esther took great interest in church affairs. Alexander was the fi rst Secretary of the Central Downs Agricultural and Horticultural Association. Esther was a show offi cial and a keen exhibitor. She was known for her exquisite workmanship. A knitted quilt, awarded fi rst prize at the annual show in 1910 is in the Allora & District Historical Society’s collection.
Alexander Cameron drowned in Dalrymple Creek, falling from the steep
bank as he walked home on the evening of 8th July 1882. Esther then aged 36 years was widowed with four daughters and three sons.
Esther known as “Granny” Cameron had an excellent memory and right up until her death aged 98, she could always be relied upon to relate faithfully an incident concerning the early history of Allora and district. When Bert Sims (editor of the Allora Guardian) wrote his book “Allora’s Past”, he acknowledged the assistance of both Esther Cameron and Sarah Clarke. They were both children of early Allora pioneers. Esther Ann Johnstone came to Australia with her mother Mary Woodhouse Gordon (nee Johnstone) and step-father Samuel Gordon. Sarah Clarke (nee Gordon) was the daughter of Mary and Samuel.
Lt. Col. Tony Cameron is linked to Allora’s military
history. Arthur Archibald Cameron son of Alexander and Esther and great, great grandfather of Tony enlisted in the 1st Contingent sent to South Africa to fi ght in the Boer War. He had had by then eighteen years’ experience in the military. He was a member of the Queensland Mounted Infantry. At the time of his enlistment, Arthur was working at the Allora Guardian. His letters home were published in the paper. On his return home Arthur went on to become a successful businessman. He was Town Clerk, following in his father’s footsteps, from 1906-1910. In 1915, Arthur applied for a commission in the Australian Infantry Force. At the time he was the licensee of the Railway Hotel and was a member of the Allora Council. He was aged thirty-eight and married with three young sons.
The Allora Guardian printed letters from Arthur detailing his experiences overseas leading up to his going into action at the front. Arthur’s personal letters to his wife Elizabeth during his service were donated by his family to the Australian War Museum in Canberra. Arthur was killed in action in France on 26th February
1917. After his death, Esther Cameron donated a portrait of her son in uniform to the “Portrait Gallery” in the Shire Offi ces.
Arthur Archibald Cameron’s story was included in the Allora & District Historical Society’s book “Keeping Their Memory Alive”, the stories of the men from the Allora District who died in WWI.
The Cameron family are justifi ably proud of Tony’s achievements in the service of his country and of their connection to Allora and their pioneer ancestors. A large number of family members will be attending Anzac Day services in Allora.
(Alexander Cameron, Esther Ann Cameron, Sarah Eleanor Clarke, Samuel Gordon & Mary Woodhouse Gordon are listed on the “Last Pioneer Standing” raffl e. Tickets $20.00 on sale at Warwick Credit Union. Prize $1,000)
Medals awarded to A. A. Cameron after the Boer War showing the places in South Africa where he fought.

Over the past week, Allora Police have been targeting drug and property crime within the local area and their efforts have produced positive results.
Following the theft of a vehicle from an Allora residence in March, for which two men were arrested, Allora Police investigated a number of other related offences, which led to further charges being laid against the pair – both from the local area and the Gold Coast.
The 33 years old and 42 years old men have now been further charged with two counts each of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, whilst the 33 years old man was also charged with an additional count of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, and attempted unlawful entry to a vehicle with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Both men have been remanded in custody and are set to appear before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on a later date.
Further to this, multiple search warrants were executed in Allora and Deuchar, resulting in five persons being charged with nine drug and property related offences.
One 19 years old male was charged with stealing, possessing drug utensils, and breaching his bail conditions; a second 19 years old male was charged with possessing drug utensils; a 27 years old male was charged with possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drug utensils; a 30 years old woman was charged with possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drugs utensils; and a 42 years old male was charged with possessing drug utensils.

Historical Society Display
This display has been created by members of the Allora & District Historical Society as part of the Southern Downs Heritage Festival theme “Connecting People, Places and the Past”
With Allora’s 150 Year Celebration “Come Home To Allora” on 20th and 21st July, the society is connecting with people who want to celebrate this important date in Allora’s history. We want people from places far and near to enjoy a day of comradeship with old friends and family members.
The dolls in the display were dressed by Ethel May Byrne (nee Morris) in outfi ts worn by children in days past. Ethel made the little sailor costumes on the child mannequins. Many photos show the sailor outfi t to be a popular style worn by children of Allora and district in the 1800s. Also featured is a miniature ‘May Pole’. A
‘May Pole’ dance will be part of the entertainment during the celebrations. Thank you to the management of the Allora Pharmacy for the use of their window for the display.

David Abbott to Speak at Men’s BreakfastThe Allora Presbyterian
Church will host its Men’s Breakfast this month on Saturday, 27th April, at 7.20am, in the church hall. Brekky is free and is a
bloke’s breakfast – cereal, bacon and eggs and tea or coffee. Our guest speaker is David Abbott, who with his wife Val is a recent arrival to Allora, having relocated
from NSW in 2018. David served for many
years as a Pastor in NSW since being Ordained as a Minister of Religion in 1982. As a Registered Minister of Religion, David has been privileged to conduct numerous Marriage Services in Churches, on beaches, in park lands and home gardens and recently returned from a trip to Taree to offi ciate at a wedding in early April.
David trained with Life Line as a Telephone Counsellor and was for 15 years, a Training Facilitator with the National Association for Loss and Grief, (NALAG).
David has worked at various roles to support his ministry. This has opened doors and allowed him to share with many families and individuals he may never otherwise have met. Before coming to QLD, David was a Hospital Chaplain for over 10 years with Hunter New England Area Health Service. David also provided funeral ministry to families on the Mid North Coast as a Chaplain for a local Funeral Home.
David will share his testimony of living a Christian life and His faith in the Living God who is with us all, on our journey of life.
A Hodgson Vale man, Ian Mason, is writing a book covering the history of the Back Plans and District Cricket Association and he is looking for information from locals in the Allora area, the town having fi elded a team in the competition during its era.
“I am looking for information on a trophy won by Emmett Lyons in the 1957-58 season, for best player of the season for the Back Plains and District Cricket Association,” Mr Mason said.
The silver tray is the Sid
Cricket historyRickert Memorial Trophy.
“I am trying to fi nd out who Sid Rickert was,” Mr Mason said.
“I know he played cricket for Allora in the 1920s.
“I am almost fi nished the book and am just looking for a little bit more information and photos to do with any teams that played in the Back Plains and District Cricket Association from 1930 to 2001.”
Anyone who thinks they may be able to assist can contact Ian Mason on 0400 692 799 or 4630 9011.

Looking Back…Allora’s Past 25 years ago April

Park Battle LostAllora couple Val and Eric Ireland have lost their battle to prevent a new link road being constructed through Dalrymple Creek Park, which they say will destroy 12 established trees. The Irelands felt strongly that the existing road linking Herbert Street and Allora Drive could be upgraded with the loss of only two small trees. The Irelands have been nurturing the trees in the park for the past 12 years and felt that the new road, being built at a cost of $70,000 would not only unnecessarily destroy the aesthetics of the park but would be a huge waste of money. Mrs. Ireland said that in spite of two previous votes of six-to-four against re-routing the road, the Council had made a unanimous decision to go ahead with it while they were on holidays, and the first that they knew about it was when the Council started to rip out the trees on their return.

Debutante BallFluttering streamers in shades of deep purple, mauve and silver grey were used in the decorative scheme for the Church of England debutante ball in the Central Hall. The function was attended by dancers from Warwick, Clifton, Pilton, Pratten and other districts. At 9.30 the six debutantes, preceded by little Justine Volker as flower girl, and Mrs. Max Pitkin as lady in waiting, entered the hall and proceeded to the stage where Mrs. O. C. Slade, Matron of Honour, presented them to Arch-deacon Knight. The
debutantes were Miss Una Shooter, Allora; Miss Daphne Stewart, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Stewart, Allora; Miss Loris Clarke, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Clarke, Allora; Miss Iris Wilson, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilson, Ellinthorp; Miss Hilma Clarke, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. POPULATION OF ALLORA
To the Editor of the Examiner & TimesSir,- Allow me to draw your attention to a misprint in the Government Gazette, and which you copied in your last issue. In the Allora petition for a municipality it is stated “that Allora contains a population of 400 souls,” not 4000 as the Government Gazette has it. This error appears to cast ridicule both on the petition and its promoters. I hope, therefore, that you will insert this correction.Yours truly,One of the petitionersAllora, April 15th, 1869.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKA bloke went into a pub. Seated at the bar beside an
Irishman was a huge dog.
“Does your dog bite?” he asked the Irishman.
“No, he’s as gentle as a lamb”.
So the bloke patted him and the dog just about tore his arm off.
“You told me your dog didn’t bite”, he screamed.
“Yes”, said the Irishman, “but that’s not my dog”.

Warriors face tough match on Sunday The ongoing challenge between Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL) pacesetters Wattles Warriors and Valleys Roosters resumes on Sunday at Herb Steinohrt Oval, the A Grade Warriors looking to level the ledger of the last season.
Wattles front up to the Roosters in Under 18 at 11.30am, Reserve Grade at 1pm followed by the A Grade match of Round 5 at 2.30pm.
The 2019 TRL A Grade grand fi nalists, Valleys and Wattles, clashed on four occasions last season with the reigning premiers Roosters rolling the Warriors in three of the four encounters.
The Warriors bubble burst at Herb Steinohrt Oval in Round 4 this time last year at the hands of a committed Valleys outfi t who ran in six tries to two winning 34-12.
The two premiership front-runners next contested the Madsen-Rasmussen Trophy mid-season championship, in what is considered one of the great fi nals across the 38 years of the prestigious Trophy’s
history.A stirring second half
surge appeared to have landed Wattles fi nal success leading 22-8 with eleven minutes remaining, but they were denied after Valleys staged a mighty fi ght back in the fi nal stages to snatch a 24-22 victory.
Last year’s Round 15 clash between the two premiership heavyweights was a must win for Wattles and did just that at Platz Oval with a mighty 24-16 win over the Roosters.
In the fourth meeting of the two sides last year Wattles top grade side were denied a fi fth TRL premiership at Glenholme Park when beaten by the Valleys in the dying minutes of the grand fi nal 24-22.
The fanfare commences again on Sunday with Wattles running on against
Valleys, both sides keen to fi nish with the premiership points in their fi rst encounter of the TRL Centenary season.
Wattles have seen forward leader and lock forward Ryan Duggan and winger Michael Marshall and Blake Lollback on the injury list of late, but coach Travis Burns confi rms he has a fully fi t side to take on the Roosters.
“Blake and Ryan will return to the line-up, Michael needs more time with his
injury,” Burns said. Wattles A Grade side
to play on Sunday: 1. Nathan Gaulton, 2. Blake Lollback, 3. Nick Van Der Poel, 4. Jake Hargreaves, 5. Braydon Wilson, 6. Travis Burns, 7. Matt Duggan, 8. Mitchell Duff, 9. Joe Morris, 10. Dale Perkins (c), 11. Ty Gardner, 12. Mitch Koina, 13. Ryan Duggan (c), 14. Matt Richards, 15. Dylan Wilson, 16. Jordan Henry, 17. Michael Pearson.
