Fall Fair kicks off with midway and moreKatya Slepian

Alberni VAlley news

It’s taken weeks and weeks of preparation but the 2014 Fall Fair has finally come together. It’s especially hard to believe given that one short week ago, the bustling fairgrounds were dusty and abandoned, with volunteers just beginning to set up the fair.

On the night of Thursday, Aug. 28, just behind the barn, a group of men were loading boards onto a truck.

“These are part of our stage and we put it right behind the logger sports. Then we build a deck over the pool,” said Fall Fair administrator Anne Sidall. “Every year they have to do this and that’s a huge job, they all go in a certain

way and numbered.”And it’s not only the

outdoors that are bustling.Inside the Kin Hut, Steve

Kalugin, deputy governor of the Kin Canada Upper Island Zone and Barb Kalugin, president of the Port Alberni Kinette Club, are hard at work preparing to feed the hungry hordes that will descend on the fairgrounds come opening day. Well, that and trying

to get their granddaughter, Mackenzie, to wear her customized apron. “Mackenzie, if you’re gonna help me, you have to be wearing this. See, I’ve got mine on.”

The Kinette Club has run the food booth at the fair since the club’s inception close to 50 years ago.

“They’re a small group but they do a lot of work and this is their major

fundraiser for the year,” said Steve. “They support a lot of groups as well” and those groups will get donations in return for volunteering their time at the fall fair.

Any extra money that the Kinettes raise will go towards bursaries, helping adults with disabilities, the SPCA, Salvation Army and Cystic Fibrosis Canada, for which Kin

Canada, the local club’s parent organization, has raised almost $40 million.

“All those funds are raised out of here so they’re busy, they’ll have four windows going,” he said. “It gets crazy. People are buying up, it’s all your regular burgers, hotdogs, fried onions of course, so with those smells they’re dragging everybody in.”

HORSINGaround

Katya SlepianAlberni VAlley news

“Katie, elbows! What are you doing? I’m going to put some Velcro on there!” admonishes Carole Walton, the Equine Canada Certified coach preparing the horse division of Port Alberni’s 4-H club for the 2014 Fall Fair.

She’s giving direction to five girls who are training for the 4-H Horse Show taking place during the Alberni District Fall Fair, taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds behind Glenwood Centre.

The girls, all Port Alberni residents, range between nine and 12 years old and their horses range from ponies for the younger ones to horses for the older ones. But more than the riders, it’s the horses that are making things difficult by getting a little snappy.

“That pony keeps attacking that grey horse,” Walton says. “We have problems.”

Walton has been training riders for close to 50 years now and one of the girls taking part in the Fall Fair Horse Show is riding Walton’s horse, Ruby. The 29-year-old mare has had a long

run with Walton, having given her two generations of show horses.

Dolly, one of Ruby’s brood, is 21 years old now, while her foals are Kira and Peek, both American Quarter Horse Association Champions. Kira once finished ninth in the world in halter.

“These horses are lovely to ride, they’re so well trained,” Walton says.

The stable where the horses are housed used to include a clubhouse. “Back in the 70s, we had huge quarterhorse shows here so we needed a clubhouse, a place for people to congregate. We had a bar upstairs; it’s now a hayloft,” Walton says. “We had a concession across the front, we danced here, we had a riding club and parties here.”

She used to breed horses for sale but in recent years she’s stopped, worried as to what might happen without proper veterinary care.

“We have no vet in this town, no large animal vet any closer than Courtenay or Nanaimo, both over an hour away.”

So in lieu of breeding horses, she’s helping to train them and their riders.

“We have been doing lessons every couple of weeks to start and then it’s been every week after that, trying to teach [riders] how to do competitions as well as just plain ride the horses,” Walton says.

With most of the girls never

having been on a horse until April of this year, the preparation is a lot of work, both in and out of the saddle. But amidst the hard work, there’s also a little time for fun.

“I try to give them some work on the ground, leading, some

work in the saddle, riding and some fun, which are games on horseback and trail riding.”

It’s crucial for the girls to learn it all well, because when the fall fair comes they’ll have to do it all themselves as per 4-H rules, with no parental help.

“They had to learn how to saddle and bridle and tie up their horses properly, put the halter on. They had to learn to do everything for themselves and that’s what the preparation has been about.”

Alberni woman a finalist in B.C. literacy contestPort Alberni resident

Alana Bodnar has been chosen as a top five finalist for a province-wide letter-writing contest held by Decoda Literacy Solutions to raise

awareness of the importance of British Columbia’s literacy needs.

Bodnar is no stranger to the B.C. literacy field—she works as a Welcoming

Community Coordinator at the Literacy Alberni Society. She submitted a creative entry to the Literacy is Life letters contest to show other British

Columbians that literacy truly is an essential part of life, and to explain what literacy meant to her, how it has impacted her life, and what she’s done to increase literacy in the Port Alberni community.

“I am thrilled to be a finalist!” she noted in a recent interview. “Thank you for this amazing opportunity.”

Bodnar has been invited to a campaign launch event to meet four other finalists hailing from across British Columbia which will be held in downtown Vancouver on the evening of Sept. 10. She insisted that her parents join her at the event.

“They have and continue to support me with my literacy

struggles,” she says.The contest is

a highlight of the Literacy is Life campaign. Organized by Decoda Literacy Solutions, it is a province-wide fundraising and awareness campaign.

Other Literacy Alberni members are appearing in television commercials that began airing Sept. 1.

Fall Fair chock full of activitiesFrom / A3

“We raise lots of money here and it all goes back to the community,” said Barb. “We get it all done in one weekend; the whole budget for our club is basically made during this weekend. It’s a lot of flipping burgers, it’s a lot of grease.”

But there’s a lot of work to be done before people can come down and get their burgers which means that everyone is hard at work, even Mackenzie, who’s helping Barb get some rocks ready to serve as weights so nothing blows away during the fair.

“Put one more up there: perfect! Now come put one over there, no no, leave that one there!”

There’s also painting to be done before the fair starts.

For two weeks now, Deb Johnson and her team of young volunteers have been hard at work painting new signs and refreshing old ones for this year’s event.

“We’ve spent four

or five evenings now just touching up old signs and my son has spent two, four-hour afternoons at the regional district office just printing and laminating a whole bunch of signs. I think the signs have been going for a total of 24 hours after about four to five days.”

It’s Johnson’s first year doing this and she’s amazed by the amount of work it takes.

“I don’t know how long it normally takes, I don’t know if I’ve done well or not.”

The fall fair will feature midway rides from Westcoast Amusements, zucchini races, home baking and produce competitions, trade show, logger sports, a 4-H horse show, live entertainment each night and a parade on

Saturday along 10th Avenue from Burde to Hollywood streets starting at 11 a.m.

It takes place at the fairgrounds behind the Glenwood Centre from 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept 4 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. Admission is $2 on Sept. 4 but for the first hour attendees can get in for free with a non-perishable food bank donation. For Sept 5, 6 and 7, admission is $10 for adults, $6 for students ages 13-18 and seniors, $3 for kids six to 12 and free for kids under 6. Rides are extra; $3 per ride on Thursday and $40 for the whole day on Friday and Saturday and $35 on Sunday. For more information, call (250) 723-9313 or visit [email protected]

Dentistry gets boost from Toy Run

SUSAN QUINNAlberni VAlley news

Little patients needing dental surgery will be able to seek treatment closer to home, thanks to a generous donation from the Port Alberni Toy Run.

Toy Run members on Tuesday gave $20,000 to the West Coast General Hospital Foundation, which will bolster the pediatric dentistry program in Port Alberni.

“This vital community support will benefit children in the area for years to come,” dentist Dr. Jim Chan said.

“In the field of pediatric dentistry, our patients experience several challenges. One such challenge is access to care,” said Chan, who is based at Holly Tree Dental in Nanaimo.

“For some families, travelling out of town to see a specialist is a significant barrier. Long surgical wait times can also affect these patients’ dental experiences.

“This gift helps provide a local option which will reduce wait times for children who cannot be treated in an office setting.”

The donation will secure operating room time for Chan and fellow pediatric dentists Dr. Kimiko Kika and Dr. Felicity Hardwick to come to Port Alberni several times a month and treat patients at WCGH.

The donation will also bring the wait list down, said Ellen Brown, site director at WCGH. “I am delighted with this donation from the Toy Run and hospital foundation,” she said.

“It’s the biggest donation we’ve made,” Toy Run chairman David

Wiwchar said. “In 2001 we gave $16,000 to the foundation to build the playhouse in the (hospital) lobby to make the hospital more child friendly. This donation is to bring services back

that used to be here in the old hospital.”

Wiwchar established a legacy fund with the Toy Run six or seven years ago, and the organization has tucked away between $2,000 and $5,000

each year.“As we’re headed

into the 30th anniversary we had $20,000 in the fund,” he said.

The pediatric dental program melds well with the Toy Run’s

mandate to donate to children’s programs, Wiwchar added.

The money is expected to pay for

specialized x-rays and several trays of child-sized tools.

Foundation chair Claire Tucker

With the dispute between the province and the teachers stretching into the new school year, parents are finding themselves scrambling to make other arrangements. Some, like Richelle McKenzie who has

a 10-year-old and an eight-year-old enrolled in public schools, are making do with friends and family.

“I’m lucky, I’m working with other families, working together to try and make it work,” she said.

Some cities in the province have begun adding programs in

an attempt to provide parents with alternate child support arrangements but according to director of Parks, Recreation and Heritage Scott Kenny, Port Alberni just doesn’t have the staff available.

“We don’t really have the staff to do that and we’ll see just how long it stretches,”

Kenny said.“We don’t have staff

While many daycares are filling up, parents without childcare have a few options. The Salvation Army is running a daycamp for children

from kindergarten to Grade 5. The camp will run from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 a day per child and activities will include games, stories and arts and crafts. For more information and to register, parents can call Major Kristiana Mac Kenzie at 250-723-6913.

Shining Star Child Care is looking into using a neighbouring facility for more space to accommodate extra children. The child care takes elementary age children and is $36 per day. Parents can call 250-724-9699 for more information.

Stepping Stones Day Care is close to being full but parents

looking to get on a waitlist or try for a drop-in spot can drop by 4645 Helen St. to get a registration package or call 250-720-0957. The day care takes children ages six to 12 and it’s $40 a day per child for a full day and $25 for a half day up to four [email protected]

Alternate activities for kids available during strike

teacher rally draws hundredsKatya Slepian

Alberni VAlley news

Cheers and applause greeted Alberni District Teacher’s Union Ken Zydyk at a rally in support of local teachers on Tuesday, the same day students should have been going to their first day of school.

Instead, teachers, parents and some students gathered at Hansen Hall on Johnston Road to discuss the ongoing contract struggle between the BC Teachers Federation and provincial government over compensation and class sizes that has been going since February 2013. An all-out strike in June resulted in two weeks of school closures at the end of the 2013–2014 school year.

“It’s a difficult day for us today,” Zydyk said.

“Teachers more than anyone want to be in school today and we know that this is a big day for students, parents and the community,” he told the close to 200 parents, teachers and students at the rally. “And the reason that we’re not there today is because of the government and Christy Clark’s choice to keep schools closed.”

Zydyk said he was disappointed by the government’s lack of bargaining in good faith, citing its firing of the bargaining team and the trustee board that

was then replaced by the government’s own choices.

“In June, Minister (Peter) Fassbender promised on Father’s Day weekend that there would be bargaining 24/7,” he said, adding that the BCTF team cut their packets down significantly and presented it to the government’s bargaining

team before being made to wait 48 hours for a response.

“The response was no, no counter proposals, no new ideas, nothing,” he said. Instead, the government has asked for the BCTF to “throw two B.C.

Supreme Court wins away and we did not agree to that.”

The two court wins were Bill 28, which in 2002 stripped away teachers’ rights to bargain on class size and composition and was defeated in 2011, and Bill 22, which in 2012 did the same and was defeated in 2013. Earlier in 2014, the government was ordered to pay the BCTF $2 million over its refusal to bargain in good faith.

“It’s very disappointing that the government will not honour the two decisions of the B.C. Supreme Court. We think that rather than fight the court decisions, they should restore the funding to put those decisions back in,” Zydyk said, adding that it was disappointing to teachers that they were still having to fight over class sizes and composition.

The BCTF and the

government had a pause in bargaining over the summer and went into talks only on Aug. 8.

“Our bargaining team was ready all summer,” Zydyk said, adding that “there was no change in government position.”

He’d like the government to come back to the bargaining table with the BCTF and mediator Vince Ready without any preconditions and with a willingness to compromise.

“We think that without the preconditions, for example throwing away our court decisions that were in our favour, we can

get this deal done with the help of Vince Ready..

“Christy Clark, Peter Fassbender and the government have decided that for them it is more important to subvert the legal process than to have children in school,” he said. “Christy Clark has decided that it’s more important strategically for government to try and break the union and break us through 10 per cent salary reduction and a lockout from doing volunteer work from students.”

Zydyk sees the $40 a day government allowance for parents with children 12

and under as a payout and a bargaining tool rather than a sign of government wanting to get students back into schools.

“$40 a day for parents to find alternatives rather than send their child to school. That’s more important for Christy Clark to spend $12 million dollars a day to keep children out schools than it is to spend $3 more a day per child to have them in school and support and getting the extra help when they need it. Our students deserve better and we will hold the line until we get better.”

There to support

teachers was Alberni-Pacific Rim NDP MLA Scott Fraser, who was out at picket lines in front of Port Alberni schools this morning and throughout the summer.

“I get what this is about, this is about the future of public education in this province. It’s about constitutional rights and it’s about the kids.”

Fraser read from an open letter sent by B.C. NDP leader Jim Horgan on Sept. 1 that stated that “parents across our province have already paid a huge price for your government’s failure to resolve the labour dispute in our public education system” and that B.C. “children deserve the quality public education the government is responsible for delivering.”

Horgan’s letter also called for B.C. Minister of Education Peter Fassbender “to be relieved of his duties as it has become clear Mr. Fassbender is not capable of doing his job of providing public education to all British Columbians.”

Jackalynn Meyer, a local single mother of two children going into kindergarten and Grade 5, was at the rally to show her support for the teachers.

“I feel like it’s been an endless balance for all of the teachers. I have seen first hand, volunteering in the classrooms, what they go through. Class sizes are large and you couldn’t pay me enough money to sit in one of those classrooms.

V ICTORIA – There was an uproar in the B.C. legislature

this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to low-usage coastal ferry routes.

The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election. It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits. On some sailings the Transport Canada-mandated crew outnumbered the passengers.

Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed – with one glaring exception. The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced, using the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet, the open-decked Nimpkish.

This move wasn’t a direct response to low usage, a chronic issue with some of the minor route sailings along the coast. It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola.

This summer the first leg was consolidated with the Northern Expedition, the vessel that replaced the doomed Queen of the North on the Inside Passage run up to Prince Rupert. At Bella Bella, after a layover of a couple of hours, the Nimpkish took over with space for

16 standard vehicles on its deck and a midnight arrival time in Bella Coola.

The direct route had been mainly used by European tourists, who sailed from the Lower Mainland to Victoria, drove the length of the Island, ferried to Bella Coola and drove through the rugged Chilcotin to Williams Lake and back down south to complete the circle tour.

The new route incorporated stops in remote outposts Ocean Falls and Shearwater, making it even longer. Warnings came early.

“That’s where 90 per cent of the [BC Ferries] money is being lost, on the milk runs, and that’s the part they are keeping,” Petrus Rykes, a tourism operator at Anahim Lake for 40 years, said in March. “The part they’ve cancelled was at 70 per cent capacity, the second highest of all the fleet routes.”

Reports of a bad slump have come to pass. The changes meant bookings couldn’t be made until April, too late for most international travelers.

A survey by Bella Coola Valley Tourism in mid-summer found most operators losing business, from 10 to 90 per cent. A bus tour of Canadian seniors heading west from Williams Lake was terminated after 14 years. One tourism operator on Highway 20 is considering closing down.

Stone and his family took the new route themselves in early August, with the minister offering sunny reports on his blog.

Stone summed up his experience this way:

EDITORIAL

Blame lies on both sides

Given that the dispute between the B.C. Teachers Federation and the employer, which for all intents and purposes is the provincial government, has dragged on for months, it seems quite likely there will be no classes on Tuesday, and into the foreseeable future.

This is completely unacceptable. There is no shortage of blame to go around, but it is the two primary parties in the dispute who have brought public school students and their parents to this sad state of affairs.

At one time, the BC Liberal government banned strikes by teachers, saying that using students as pawns in a labour dispute was unacceptable. That was a move that met with considerable public support. However, teachers disregarded the ban and went on strike in 2005, and actually gained considerable public sympathy, partly due to the fact that the BC Liberals had torn up part of their existing contract, and partly due to the fact that their emphasis was on class size and composition.

That’s the emphasis again, and this time the strike is perfectly legal. However, students have already suffered considerable damage, due to most of June being a write-off from an education perspective. Now it appears that the first part of September, and maybe the whole month, won’t be any different. A $40 a day payment to parents of younger students is no recompense.

The public has absolutely no control over the BCTF, and any discipline to be handed out there must be done by BCTF members, if enough of them disagree with the union executive’s actions in continuing this strike.

The fact is, neither side is taking students’ education all that seriously. They are treating this as a political fight — something both the BCTF and BC Liberals excel at.

The education system exists so students can have a brighter future as adults. It’s high time they were back in class.

As the fall season will soon settle in, and we will look forward to Thanksgiving Day, perhaps it is not too early to think about a ‘Season of Creation’. It could be for us a time that recognizes that our relationship with the rest of nature is a religious and spiritual matter. It could be a time to acknowledge God as Creator and Preserver of all life; and which thankfully remembers that we are created ’in God’s image’. Now is the time to appreciate this wonderful world, to gain new awareness of the ‘wounds of creation’ and

to respond to our call to participate with God in its renewal.

Adopt a teacher; they deserve help

To the Editor,With the B.C Federation of

Labour 100 per cent behind B.C teachers, Minister Fassbender’s assertion that a settlement hinges on being competitive with other public sector unions is a lie.

The true issue is the same as it’s been for 40 years since I graduated: class size, composition and enough resources for special-needs students.

Who cares what others are making?

I wish these pencil-pushing bureaucrats would get over this childish “theirs is bigger than mine!” negotiating mentality and just pay teachers what their work (the shaping of our children) is worth.

In the meantime, while our dedicated teachers stand their ground for our youth, let’s all unite and Adopt a Teacher. I’m sure we’ve all got a little extra, we could at least keep ‘em all fed.

At the very least, hug a teacher today.

For they are taking a hit as they make a stand for future generations.

The gov’t bleeding has got to stop

To the Editor,Re: B.C. back in black, deep

in debt (B.C. Views, July 24).Tom Fletcher’s column on

B.C.’s operating budget and debt touches on a balance

that must be examined. Some capital investments

are made to reduce operating cost – some of the new building costs at Royal Jubilee Hospital does that, for example. Some improve reliability – the earthquake resistant fire hall in View Royal for example.

Some add capacity – sometimes to meet demand, sometimes “just because.” In your household there is a limit based on income. Similarly in business, borrowing has to be paid back – companies often get into financial trouble from debt, such as the dysfunctional Pacific Western Airlines culture in its expanded life as Canadian Airlines.

Politicians do pay some attention because credit rating agency evaluations increase cost of borrowing. Occasionally one reforms, as the profligate Bob Rae did in Ontario.

Provincial politicians tend to be profligate in

spending, including on grandiose projects – Ontario being a current example of huge projects and mis-managed deals that will burden Ontario taxpayers for decades. (And the rest of us, because of the federal government’s crazy system of transfer payments that rescue the foolish.)

Governments must cut activities. The B.C. government has not addressed barriers to employment created by its quotas in agriculture and transportation, for example. It continues to spend on handouts to moochers, including companies that won’t invest in their own capability by training employees. And on public relations, as if most voters believe much of it.

Voters in B.C. have an opportunity to reduce operational spending by insisting on cutting activities such as interference with honest people’s attempt to build and earn, endless

reports, and fancy flower beds. I advocate the savings be put into the reason for government – protecting individuals against initiation of force, which at the municipal level is by policing.

PM’s theme song? ‘Wrecking Ball’

To the Editor,The CEO of B’nai Brith

Canada, in his capacity as Professor of Modern Israel Studies at Canada Christian College, has nominated Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Surely, having seen what has just taken place in Gaza during the past few weeks, there should be a joint nomination to include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When former US President Jimmy Carter received the coveted Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, there was a concert in Oslo with entertainers that included Willie Nelson and Santana. Knowing that Mr. Harper regards himself as a musician, and remembering the part that Mr. Netanyahu has had in demolishing so much of Gaza, it seems appropriate that a celebratory concert in Oslo should include Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus, and that at such a sombre event she be accompanied by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

From / A10“At the end of the

day, my assessment is that the Nimpkish is a good tourism product if tourists are made fully aware as to the type of service it provides. If correct expectations are set, I believe the Nimpkish can be marketed as a valuable tourism component of the Discovery Coast Circle Tour.

“The decision to do this rests squarely on the shoulders of the tourism industry and tourism operators who need to decide whether or not they want this service to

work, to grow and to be viable in order to capture a share of the thousands of international tourists looking for exactly the kind of adventure the Nimpkish provides.”

Got that, Discovery Coast tourism folks? If this milk run doesn’t work next year, it will be your fault. Heck, the Nimpkish has free snacks and drinks for your 10-hour voyage, much of it in the dark.

From / A8“I think it’s so

much more than the teachers, I think the teachers are a pawn in the government trying to privatize our education

system,” said Richelle McKenzie, a mother of a 10-year-old and an eight-year-old in public schools. “I think we need to support our teachers and tell them thank-

you for protecting our future and our kids’ future.”

McKenzie also doubts the government’s intentions with regard to the $40 per day

allowance.“I think that it

was a way for the government to say that they’re not willing to mediate and that they’re just going to give away the teachers’ paycheques and they’re not willing to back down,” she said. “That scares me that they’re willing to break the law and just do whatever they feel like and ignore supreme court cases.”

School District 70 (Alberni) Superintendent Greg Smyth did not return phone calls for comment but in an e-mailed statement last week he said that he hoped that “the labour impasse is quickly resolved” and students would be back in schools as soon as possible.

Smyth said parents are encouraged to not send their children to schools and find alternate arrangements.

For more information and to sign up for the $40 a day allowance, parents can visit the government’s site at www.bcparentinfo.ca and the BCTF’s site at www.bctf.ca. For local information, parents can visit [email protected]

The Bra LadyIs Coming to Size You Up

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra.

Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

Chapman is coming to PORT ALBERNI ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly.

“Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.”

Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves:• Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably?• Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your

“everyday” bra?• Do you overflow the cup of your bra?• Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders

leaving red and painful marks?• Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to

give you added support?• Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your

breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

DrivewayCanada.ca | Welcome to the driver’s seat

The Yukon is GMC Yukon territoryIt’s hard to believe but GMC has never held a vehicle launch for the Yukon full-sized SUV in the Yukon Territory, until now. Media from across Canada landed in Whitehorse and travelled around the territory recently in the all-new 2015 GMC Yukon model, ending up in the famous gold rush time capsule of Dawson City. From the wooden sidewalks to the gravel covered streets, this preserved part of history looks and feels much the way it would when gold was first discovered in 1896. The Yukon is also a great test for this big truck because of the immense stretches of unpopulated roads with smooth sections, potholes and loose gravel. The Yukon has it all, including spectacular vistas, wide-open space and spectacular scenery. Spending three days behind the wheel made me realize what a good job GMC has done with this truck, from fuel economy to creature comforts.

LooksLast year, GM introduced the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks. In fact, the Silver-ado won the North American Truck of the Year and the GMC Sierra won the AJAC truck of the year. With a solid basis, the engineers then went about building the full-sized SUVs based on the truck chassis. They include the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and Denali, plus the Cadillac Escalade. These represent a huge profit centre for General Motors and they needed to get them right. The GMC Yukon is the most popular of the bunch with one-in-three full-sized SUV buyers choosing the Yukon, which is opposite to the United States where the Chevrolet trucks dominate. The top Yukon Denali model traditionally represents about 35 per cent of all Yukon sales but in the first few months of sales, it has captured more than 60 per cent.

Inside The long wheelbase model is an im-posing truck and a favourite of large families that need the third row of seating, plus a functional cargo area. The more popular short wheelbase offers a lot of room as well but when the third row of seats is employed the cargo area is diminished. On all but the base model, the second and third row of seats can be folded and store electronically. The Denali is exceptionally well equipped and shows great attention to detail, with the aluminum trim around the radio and heat controls, leather seating with French stitching. What the GMC Yukon offers over the Cadillac cousin is a simpler dashboard layout with traditional rotary knobs and buttons,

whereas the Cadillac has moved to touch sensitive panels that take time to master.

DriveThe Yukon is offered with two engine choices, the 5.3L 355hp V8 in the base SLE and middle SLT Yukon models and the 6.2L V8 in the Denali. This 6.2L engine is also used in the Escalade. There are several reasons to consider the Denali over the base 5.3L engine. The first is the inclusion of the magnetic ride control system that is also available in the Escalade. This sys-tem adapts the suspension up to 100 times per second and performed well on a variety of road surfaces in the Yukon. The second is a noise cancelling system that pumps sound waves through the Denali’s stereo system to help eliminate unwanted road and engine noise. The third reason is the mighty 6.2L engine with 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Because this engine and the 5.3L have direct injection, variable value tim-ing and most importantly, cylinder management, the

V8 can switch off half of the eight cylinders and lean off the fuel mixture to reduce fuel consumption. With more than 1,000 km driven at a range of speeds, the real world consumption was 12L/100 km, close to the 11.4L/100 km official highway rating with the 6.2L engine. All the current Yukon models are equipped with a 6-speed automatic but the 6.2L engines will get an 8-speed this fall, with the 5.3L following next year. AWD is standard on all but the base model and these trucks can tow up to 3856 kg.VerdictThe Yukon is winner on all trim levels. I could find no fault but it is pricey. Starting at $51,800 for the SLE or $60,960 for the SLT and $75,540 for the Denali, this isn’t a cheap prospect. However, the Denali offers most of the same features as the more expensive Cadillac Escalade but is more use-friendly and less expensive.

Ray Ursel wins Salmon FestKatya Slepian

Alberni VAlley news

Port Alberni native Ray Ursel took home the top prize at the 2014 Salmon Fest this past weekend with a 37.7lb chinook.

“He fought good, made a good run right at the beginning, had a good netting job on my partner there and fought him for about 20 minutes,” Ursel said.

The 37.7-pounder was the third fish that he caught during the festival but it proved to be the best, standing its ground for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. He caught the fish out at Whittlestone, just south of Bamfield with a Rhys Davis Teaser Head lure using anchovies for bait. At 37.7 lbs, his catch was over 20 lbs better than 2013 winner Sterling

Robinson’s 17.1 lb coho at that year’s coho-only derby and he’ll walk away with

an increased prize of $15,000 to show for it. Ursel will split it three ways between

himself and his fishing partners Brent Rose and Bob McVie.

While the 37.7 lb winner meant that Port Alberni Salmon Festival Society president Dan Washington didn’t get the 43-pounder he was hoping for to celebrate the 43rd annual event, he was still pleased with the turnout; 2014 had roughly 2,000 entries, about twice what it was in 2013 and an average fish weight of 11.5 lbs, almost double that of 2013 when the average was 6.87 lbs. The total number of fish was lower this year however, with 1346 compared to 2013’s 1364.

Ursel was Saturday’s first place winner, followed by Dennis Granneman with 27 lbs in second and 2009 derby winner Cory

Jones at 26.9 lbs in third.

Sunday’s winners were Leon Joseph Kossaber in first place at 25.9 lbs, Henry Clement in second also at 25.9lbs due to weighing in second and Wayne Salikin in third place. Monday’s winners were Bill Goorts in first place at 34 lbs, Dale Dame at 24.3 lbs and Sue Hale in third at 22.9 lbs. The Gary Rooke Memorial Award for the largest hatchery salmon went to Sally Watson, who brought in her 22.8-pounder on Sunday. Watson told festival goers that this was her first derby and “it was freaking awesome” and that she’d be back in 2015.

HEALTHY LIVINGActiveHealth tip: Take the salt shaker off the table and order food without

the salt whenever possible. Your blood

pressure will thank you.

How salty are you? Pressure’s rising over sodium

What do soup, pizza, cold cuts, breads,

burgers, and cheese have in common?

These are examples of the ‘Salty Six’ and contribute the majority of sodium in the North American diet.

Many of the items listed are high in salt content and are eaten in small amounts (cold cuts), whereas, others (bread) are lower in sodium but often eaten in higher amounts, over the day.

Most Canadians

consume about double the amount of salt than what is needed. Too much sodium (salt) can raise blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease and kidney disease. Recent research reveals that in addition to cardiac disease, high blood pressure can speed up the body’s loss of calcium, leading to osteoporosis (thinning of bones). High blood pressure (or hypertension) is also a risk factor for developing diabetes, stomach cancer and increasing severity of asthma.

Fresh is best for good health. Foods

without a label, such as unprocessed vegetables and fruits are naturally low in sodium.

Frozen dinners, soup, meat, sauces and canned vegetables contain a lot of extra salt. Look for labels that say, “no salt added” or “low sodium”. Health claims, such as “reduced sodium” and “less salt” may still have a high content of sodium. Before purchasing, check the Nutrition Facts label to see the amount of sodium and daily value that the item provides.

Become a savvy shopper by reading labels.

Some tips when checking sodium levels on a food label are to focus on:

1) Serving size: how much food the Nutrition Facts table refers to

2) Number of milligrams (mg) of sodium listed in the table

3) Number of servings consumed times the number of mg sodium listed = sodium consumed

4) For adults, adequate intake is 1500 mg of sodium (around 500 mg per meal) and upper limit is 2300mg (about one teaspoon/day)

5) Using colours like a traffic signal. On any single food product, (per serving): 400mg+ is too much (red/stop), 200-400mg (amber/proceed with caution), 0-200mg (green/go)

6) % Daily Value (D.V.) is a reference range for a food item. 5% DV or less is a little, and 15% DV or more is a lot.

Some methods to reduce sodium intake include, avoiding frozen dinners and ‘instant’ foods, including instant soups, oatmeal, pancakes and waffles. Also, limit pickles, relishes, salsa, dips, olives, barbecue, soy, hoisin, oyster sauces, and prepared salad dressings. Also, salted snack foods including crackers, chips, popcorn, nuts and pretzels can be loaded with sodium.

Cured meats that have been processed or smoked can have very high levels of salt, including salami, sausages, hot dogs, ham, bacon, pepperoni

and smoked fish. Substitute other seasonings, such as herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour foods.

Take the salt shaker off the table and order food without the salt, whenever possible.

Gourmet salts are not any healthier than regular table salt, despite marketing claims. Sea salt, Himalayan, Kosher, Rock or table salt all have exactly the same effect on blood pressure and health.

With the information highway, there is a growing body of information available on the Internet. With the new sodium applications (www.Sodium101.ca/App) for mobile devices, there are easy ways to track sodium intake, build a list of favourite food items for quick

and easy tracking, plus convert the amount of sodium in various food products.

As much as nutrition labels assist with identifying the foods with lowest sodium content, the fresh vegetable and fruit products in the produce aisle, local farmers’ markets or freshly picked from a home garden with no labels are generally the lowest sodium and healthiest options.

To help maintain reasonable blood pressure levels, daily activity is important for good health. Take advantage of the beautiful Alberni Valley outdoors for a variety of activities.

The world of sci- ction is ever expanding, and Beta by Rachel Cohn is the latest addition. Joining an increasing number of teen dystopian sci- books, Beta is set in a future world where the “Water Wars” have redrawn the maps. People live in specially designed cities, but the richest of the rich live in Demesne, a paradise where pleasure is a

lifestyle. Everything is bioengineered to make the residents of Demesne feel good. Even the sta is chosen, made to suit the needs of the island. Enter Elysia. As one of the island’s many soulless clone workers, her only purpose is to serve. She

was made without a soul so that she may not enjoy the luxuries of the island. But Elysia is di erent. She feels things that she shouldn’t. As time wears on, she sees there is more to the pampered idyllic life than meets the eye. When conspiracies started to pile up, I found myself racing through the pages to nd out how it would end. The world of Beta is masterfully created, and I found it completely believable. However, Beta is intended for readers 14+. Mature content and some scenes in the book are not suitable for younger readers. When stirrings of a clone rebellion reach Elysia, she must decide how much she is willing to risk to ght for those she loves. For if Elysia is found out, it’s game over.

From / A3For Walton, the

independence that 4-H breeds is one of the best things to come out of the program. Riding horses is fun, but if the girls can apply the independence to their lives outside of the show ring then she’s done her job.

“I’ve been at this for a long, long time, I’ve had grandchildren come back to ride, but the riders, as they look back on their young life when they used to come here have said that those were the best years ever.

“They love it.”

It’s easy to see why; the property boasts 150 acres of land to ride on and includes a quarter mile of riverbank. There’s rapids coming down from Sproat Lake; the coming together of the Stamp and Somass Rivers.

The only bad thing is that Walton doesn’t know how long she’ll be able to keep teaching.

“The awful thing is, I’m getting old and that’s not good because I want to keep doing it forever. I love it, I love teaching these kids, I love to make a difference and I think riding horses makes a difference.”

The girls get to learn how to handle a responsibility and in return get a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, something that Walton believes that young girls need.

“Girls need to feel that they have control over something because girls don’t have a lot of control,” she says.

And the horses are really testing the girls’ control here.

“Rambler... Rambler! Rambler!” scolds Paige Franks, 9, whose pony has decided that he prefers banging his feed bucket into the stable wall, spilling the feed, rather than eating from it. “That’s

such a waste!”Abbie McFarlane, 11, has a

more optimistic viewpoint.“At least the chickens will be

happy.”But Franks manages to

capture Rambler’s attention.“You don’t want this? Fine,

then I’ll give it to [McFarlane’s pony] Jubejube.”

The Fall Fair Horse Show goes from Friday, Sept. 5 to Sunday, Sept. 7 with a riding clinic and 4-H Achievement on Friday and English and Western riding on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
