KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

More than 350 Grade 5 students from the Alberni Valley took in all the forest had to offer at McLean Mill on Sept. 25.

The kids were there as part of National Forest Week.

“It’s all about getting the younger students engaged and understanding a little bit more about the forest industry and forest management,” said Tracy Andrews, a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource resource officer for the Port Alberni office.

“We’re trying to spark an interest in forestry as a career so they can make choices as they move through school.”

According to the Canadian Institute of Forestry, National

Forest Week was established in 1920 as Forest Fire Prevention Week in hopes of encouraging “greater public awareness towards Canada’s forests.”

Port Alberni students at McLean Mill learned about everything from steam logging, to salmon life cycles and riparian zones with West Coast Aquatic’s Sheena Falconer to fire management with firefighters from the B.C. Wildfire Service.

“We learned about what types of trees there are and we learned about aquatic invertebrates,” said Caiden Meyer, 12.

“We learned about how firefighters use their hoses.”

Meyer’s favourite part?

Valley SENIORS Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni

seniors complexes.

Murray leaves legacy upon retirement

For 14 years, Doug Murray was the Director

of Support Services at Fir Park and Echo Villages, until his recent retirement.

During this time, he became one of the most important and influential members of the staff of these two senior homes, not only for his dedication, commitment and enthusiasm in performing his job, but for his social skills, his listening ability and, most importantly, for the understanding of his role in giving the elderly population an improved quality of life.

Born in Central Alberta, he moved to British Columbia in the mid 70’s and to Port Alberni more than two decades later.

“I had my first interview for the job here in Port Alberni on Sept. 11, 2001. That day, I left my home in Sidney at the time the second plane went

into the World Trade Centre. That was an odd start to a new life I was hoping to have for myself,” he recalls.

“The interview here went well and within a week or so I was hired. At that time I was working for the Beachwood Village and I remember not being able to leave my working site to take my position in Port Alberni because the manager could not come back to Canada from New Zealand due to the world events of that time.”

Eventually he was

able to fill his new position and that was the beginning of a new and successful career on the west coast.

Murray became an important figure in the lives of the hundreds of seniors and their families he started serving, as well as the staff he led for the next 14 years

by taking charge of maintenance, laundry, housekeeping and dietary departments. In fact, as he has stated many times, he enjoyed his work and also became attached to Port Alberni.

After about a year in town, he and his dad Pat bought a house in the Grieve Park area.

(Pat has also made many contributions to Echo Village and Heritage Place for a number of years.)

One of his major challenges was to keep aging buildings operational at times when finances were hard to get and patience ran thin, “but with the hard work of the board of directors and the maintenance crew, we managed to remain standing,” he said.

He has continuously praised the work done by the staff of the various departments he worked with for the good operation of the facilities and thinks that the homes have benefited a great deal by having good teams in laundry, housekeeping and dietary. Considering the amount of sheets they clean, the floors they wash and the meals they produce, “it is quite amazing that we have done so

well”, he said. As a manager,

he also worked closely with other departments within the operation, especially with programming.

He provided food services at various events organized as part of the homes’ mandate to plan and carry out social programs for the residents in their home and in the

community.He was exceptional

in endorsing a wide variety of events by supplying material and human resources and food skillfully prepared for the needs of those events in a professional fashion.

Such is the case of some summer endeavours like the popular “Celebrity BBQs”; the annual “Family Fun Day in the Park”; the monthly dances and Pub Nights; as well as several calendar and special celebrations.

For many, where he left his trademark was his involvement at the annual “An Evening of Fine Dining.”

EXPERIENCED KNOWLEDGEABLE SERVICE!

Tuesday, Sept 29, 2015 - Alberni Valley News A4 www.albernivalleynews.com

From / A3This event is

sponsored by the members of the Eagles Auxiliary.

This meaningful program aimed to have the residents and their families together while enjoying a dinner in an elegant setting and candlelight atmosphere and with a special menu prepared by Murray and his kitchen crew.

The program was made more special because he always added the right touch to each unforgettable evening.

In 2007 Murray added to his active professional life the site management for Heritage Place, an Assisted Living facility behind Echo Village. Heritage Place is owned and operated by the Alberni Valley Assisted Living Society.

“Over the years I fell in love with this place and all of the people involved,” he says.

Again, as a manager of this new home, he immediately became a popular employee, respected by all, not only as a professional, but as a caring

individual who was always accessible and ready to solve problems when they arose.

He became a well-liked figure among tenants and workers alike. A good example comes from a quote made by John Shaw, one of the very first tenants of Heritage Place, when he stated: “We also have here a real life chef/manager/ supervisor/ ‘jack of all trades’, (Murray) who makes our lives blessed.”

Murray continues being active since his retirement by volunteering at Heritage Place.

“I hope I can remain useful to them and to Fir Park and Echo if needed,” he said.

Murray continues to help out volunteering at Heritage Place Community

SUSAN QUINN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Super moonThe ‘super moon’, seen from Maebelle Road, rises beside Mount Arrowsmith, Sunday night. A super moon is called such when it makes its closest approach to Earth, appearing at its largest and brightest. This appearance coincided with a lunar eclipse. The next time both will occur at the same time will be 2033. People gathered in darkened parking lots, along country roads, on Centennial Pier and up the clock tower at Harbour Quay to witness the lunar phenomenon.
