Introduction One of the features of RefWorks is the ability to customize your users’ login screen. This allows you to post information (or links to more information) that your users will see each time they log in to RefWorks.

You create a page that fits our specifications (below) and in the Administrator tool, Subscriber Information area – you link to that page. You host the page – RefWorks just links to it and displays it in a 600x 312 pixel frame.

The page keeps the login name and password box, moving it to the left of the screen, but allows you include custom information (logos, contact details) and links to other pages (like FAQ or custom instructions).

Here is some information about the space you can design for:

Screen dimensions: 600 pixels wide x 312 pixels high

<iframe src="<your link here>" scrolling = "no" frameborder="0" width="600px" height="312px" MARGINWIDTH="0" ></iframe>

On the following pages are some examples of custom login pages (and some of the subsequent pages they link to) to give you some ideas of what you can do. The possibilities are endless, since you can link to as many items as you want. One suggestion is to make the initial frame on the login page inviting and not overcrowded with information, so your users will actually read it and click on the links.

Example #1 – Basic RefWorks information with links to detailed import instructions This institution decided to focus on a specific topic on their login screen – getting citations into RefWorks. They created a link to a detailed page of instructions (taken from the RefWorks help and modified to suit their specific databases and needs) as well as a link to a local support contact in order to obtain the Group Code for off-campus access.

Example #1 – List of database instructions The Institution created a customized list of import instructions, taken from the RefWorks help, and put them in a table by database name (vs. database vendor) along with a quick glance at entry options. Each database name in blue is a link to detailed instructions. Not all databases have instructions – however those are on the list in a different color and have manual entry marked.

Example #2 – Custom login page with links to pages on library website This institution took advantage of the webpages they created on their library website by also linking to them from the RefWorks login screen. Their links include the RefWorks Quick Start Guide, a tutorial, FAQs, a page with the group code (which requires login to the proxy to get the code), import instructions and instructions for converting EndNote databases.

Example #3 – Custom Login Screen with links to additional pages created by the Institution Institution also created a FAQ page and import instructions page that link from the custom login screen. The first link on the page allows users sign-up information for local RefWorks training classes!

Example #3 - Link from RefWorks login screen to Instructional Courses This Institution offers two levels of training – Undergraduate and Graduate/Faculty covering different subjects. This is a terrific approach for targeting RefWorks features that are applicable to specific audiences.
