Local NewsWinter Goals & our Winter Lunch meeting at Fasta Pasta.Winter is here, the coldest part of the year and we do it outdoors? Why? Statisics,Facts, study & our Group history tells us that we see an average of 30% betteresults in winter than any other time of the year! Our body must work harder to keep

our bodies warm outside as well as keep up with our training routines. Yes, it isarder to get out there to a session, BUT once you get there you are firing and

burning more energy (carbs & fats) because your body simply cannot adapt.Exercising outdoors allows for your body to adapt (takes 12 weeks) then has toadjust again for each different season! To mix it up a bit more & also make things a little easier, we train indoors for theevening toning sessions during the week!Keep your body rich in nutrients so that it has what is needed to resist viruses &nfections, whilst giving you the constant energy it needs to perform at its best. Beure to include fish or fish oil tablets in your diet as explained in our health & fitness

    article.

At the winter meeting May 31stWe handed out & went through goals sheets to set,

plan & to achieve our health & fitness targets (if you have not received this form, please get one off your trainer ASAP). These forms NEED to be completed andanded to your trainer. Discussed in the meeting is how we are changing ouroutines, our diets so that our body doesnt adapt therefore it will work harder to

achieve results, burning more energy and fat to do so.Changes are being made to:

    - our diet (9 week challenge, nutrients for you body, detox etc)- our body (training routines, packages, events etc)

    - our mind (train of thought, planning, motivation, inspiration & constantspotting by a family member, a friend, a SIL member & your trainer.Complete your winter goals form & hand it in to your trainer as the planning for youroals, extra packages, promos and events begin the week of June 8th. An email will

be sent to your from us explaining these benefits and what you need to do to make ahange and achieve results.

Then we see how you have been progressing at the winter dinner (3-4 weeks) andwhat our next steps will be from there on to achieve results before spring & summerit. Winter Dinner is Sunday July 5that 5pm. Members please RSVP by 26thJune.

Jo Nadin- About 5 years ago I decided to join Step into Life Glenmore Park as a client to add a bit of variety to exercise routine. I liked the idea of training outdoors in groups so I decided to give it a go. I instantly loved theclasses, support, and encouragement that I received from my trainers and fellow Lifers. As time went by and I sathe results for both myself and my training buddies, I soon realised that this was a great product and I too could bea career that I could really love. With a simple and effective Franchise System to follow, great support from my staoffice, I thought why not!

Deb and Sue from Step into Life Glenmore Park encouraged me to get qualified and take on my own franchise innear by Penrith. I launched Step into Life Penrith in September 2005 and have had a great time, great results andmet a lot of wonderful people along the way. Im always telling my clients and friends how lucky I am to love my joHelping people achieve their health and fitness goals is a great career and I couldnt imagine doing anything else.

Justin Lavender- I was looking for a team sport with lots of variety and after playing soccer for 26 years I founwas looking for something a little more social and enjoyable. I called Jo at Step into Life Penrith and I booked in tostart a free session. So I went down to start a cardio session, within the first 20 minutes I knew straight away thatthis was for me; the team spirit was there, the sweat was there, and most of all the encouragement was there.

During this time I was starting my Cert III in Fitness so I was also taking notice of how Jo ran the class and tsessions that were provided. Then I realised this is exactly the way I would run my sessions for my own businethe only thing I lacked is the business knowledge, and the marketing clout. In time Jo asked me to do some wexperience with her and eventually I started to fill in for her and run some classes, what a buzz!

I was hooked and wanted to know more about Step into Life and the way they run their franchises, I started Step iLife Glenbrook in February 2009 and I dont regret one bit of it. Gone are the days of working to live; now I love towork.

Craig Hayne - I am the trainer and owner of Step into Life West Pennant Hills. I joined Jaron at Step into LBaulkham Hills 4 years ago to loose some weight and generally increase my fitness level. At that time I was working at a company I had been with for over 20 years, and it just seemed to be on a roundabout with no exit. Sinto Life provided the guidance, motivation, and environment I needed to reach my goals. Whilst being a membeBaulkham Hills I observed a business that provided its owner flexibility and what a great way to be able to help otpeople, using some of the skills and experiences I had gained over the last 20 years and get paid for it.

I attended a Franchise info session and it seemed like a sound business model and this was re-enforced by

experiences I had as a member and the satisfaction gained by other members that I had witnessed. I decided to qualified as a Personal Trainer and purchase a Franchise in September 2008. I have now been running the businfor 9 months, and Yes a little daunting in the start, but SIL provided me the support, back-up and plan I requiredbe successful, especially considering my background was not in the Heath and Fitness Industry originally.

I am financially comfortable already, and plan to grow bigger and better using the knowledge and experiences I halready gained, with SIL always just a phone call away for guidance or advice when needed.

David OConner- I joined Step into Life Caulfield in 1999, because I was unfit and unhealthy. I was a courier dr7 days a week and had no time for exercise which seemed at the time a convenient excuse.I also had a very pself image of myself, this was when I first met Larry and Mark Cohen, and I never would have thought at the tiwhat a profound impact these to men would have on turning my life around. I trained with Mark & Larry for oveyears and really enjoyed the variety of training, the sense of belonging to a club environment, the friendships twere made, and the fact that Mark & Larry would push me so hard.I loved it and thrived on it, as time went by bMark and Larry were like role models to me and I really looked up to both of them my self esteem started to imprI was losing weight and even was entering fun runs something Id thought Id never do because I was never a run

before I joined Step into Life.Larry asked me a few times why dont you purchase a franchise you would make a great trainer, you connect rewell with people? I kept saying no because I didnt believe I could seriously succeed at it. By some miracle Franchise at Cranbourne was for sale in late 2006, I myself had recently moved out to Cranbourne to start a new this waswhen Larry said to me this opportunity was too good to pass up. So after nearly 6 months of deliberattalking to friends and family, I jumped in the deep end and purchased Step into Life Cranbourne in January 200can honestly say it was the biggest risk I have ever taken in my life but I definitely have no regrets, not a single oand even though the first 2 years have been tough it has certainly been a steep learning curve. It has been the mrewarding experience of my life and I thank Larry and Mark for having faith in me to become a successful franchowner.

Health & Fitness ArticleBenefits of exercise - In case you didn't already believe it, exercise has some excellent benefits for

s as it strengthens the mind and improves your mood...recent article reported in Newsweek reaffirms that when sedentary people become active, they perform better on tests of executive func

the ability to focus on important things and tune out distractions. 'Exercise can improve anyone's mood and mental performance,' says Cotman, director of the Institute for Brain Ageing and Dementia at the University of California, Irvine (USA). 'It's free, it's fun and it doesn't twhole lot of time.

esearchers have found that active people are generally happier and are less prone to depression and suicide. Researcher Jamlumenthal placed depressed patients on a supervised exercise regiment where 60 per cent of them got better within four months the saroportion that recover on antidepressants. And though 30 per cent of the medicated became depressed again within 10 months, only 9 ent of the exercisers relapsed. The benefits or exercise here were quite obvious to researchers.

he research on mental performance tells a similar story.esearchers have long noticed that active seniors suffer less cognitive decline than sedentary ones, and recent studies suggest that aeroxercise may make us sharper at any age, another great benefit of exercise. When sedentary people become active, they perform betterests of executive function-the ability to focus on important things and tune out distractions, says Art Kramer, a University of Illi

euroscientist who uses magnetic resonance imaging to see how exercise affects the brain. They also get better at switching from one tasknother, and their memories improve.

n another recent study, psychologist Charles Emery tested volunteers ability to fire off words that start with a particular letter. He then plahem on a supervised exercise program, for 10 weeks. After the completion of the program, participants were able to recite more wordsear later, only the ones who had stuck with the regimen retained their enhanced cognitive function, says Emery.

xercises that challenge the brain as well as the body may provide further benefits. In a study published in the journal Nature this yeerman researchers reported that people who practiced juggling for three months actually enlarged a region of the cerebral cortex tandles the processing of motion.

o, how does exercise work these wonders?HRSA reports that besides improving circulation, it causes an array of chemical changes within the brain. It boosts the activity of monhancing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. It increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a chemical telps neurons multiply and form new connections. And it triggers the release of endorphins-morphine like chemicals that blunt pain and foselaxation.

tudies show that even 10 minutes of vigorous exercise (producing a pulse rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute depending on your ageaise endorphin levels for an hour. You feel tired but you feel good, says John Morley professor of internal medicine and geriatrics at St. niversity. Its the endorphin high. Source:www.completefitness.com.au

Fantastic Fishong before the benefits of omega-3 oil had been discovered, seafood was high on the list of recommended foods. White fish has longnown for its relatively low fat and total cholesterol content. Further, a serve (150g) of white fish yields roughly one-third of an adultsequirement for protein while only contributing 110 -130 calories.

eafood has other pluses too. It is a good source of niacin, riboflavin and vitamins B6 and B12. Canned sardines and salmon, eaten withones, provide calcium as do oysters and shrimp. Oysters are also a good source of iron, copper and zinc. And finally, marine foods canch source of iodine and the important trace element, selenium.

nfortunately the average Australian does not consume adequate amounts of fish in their diets. This therefore leads to many individuals hlow intake of the essential omega-3 fat. Omega-3 fats have numerous & varied health benefits, a few of which are listed below:

Help reduce blood triglycerides (fats) Prevent the formation of blood clots Reduce high blood pressure Regulate heart rhythms Reduce the occurrence of immune-related conditions e.g. rheumatoid arthritis & inflammatory bowel disease

ndeed the low incidence of coronary heart disease in the Eskimo population has been attributed to their relatively hightake of oily fish i.e. a diet high in omega-3 fats

im to include fish as part of your diet 2-3 times per week.
