“In nothing do we more nearly approach the gods than in doing good to other people!” ... San Diego de Alcala (Saint Didacus) was born in 1400, in Andalusia, Spain. He became a Francis-can Brother and served as a missionary in the Ca-nary Islands. He attended the Great Jubilee and the canonization ceremonies for Saint Bernardine of Siena in Rome in 1450, where a great plague broke out. He won renown for his care of the af-flicted. He died on November 12, 1463, in Alcala, Spain. Months passed before it was possible to bury Brother Diego, so great was the number of people who came to venerate his remains. After he was laid to rest miracles continued to occur at his tomb. He was canonized in 1588, and was popular at the time the explorers landed in Southern Cali-fornia. San Diego de Alcala is Patron of our Dio-cese and his feast day is this Wednesday (7). ... It’s a grand evening of fun for all the family! AMA A DIOS

Al acercarnos al final del año litúrgico escuchamos las lecturas del Evangelio de la etapa final del ministerio de Jesús: sus e n s e ñ a n z a s e n J e r u s a l é n . E s t e domingo Jesús está en conversación con uno de los escribas del templo. En un hecho más bien raro, Jesús y el escriba están de acuerdo con

los dos mandamientos: Amar a Dios con todo tu ser y amar a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. En la selección del Deuteronomio hoy, Moisés enseña a los hijos de Israel lo que es el centro de su vida de fe y oración, y el Salmo 17 hace eco a esta oración con las palabras: “Yo te amo, SEÑOR, tú eres mi fuerza” (Salmo 17:2). Judíos y cristianos están de acuerdo en que nuestra mayor responsabilidad es amar al Dios uno y único, y que no podemos pretender amar a Dios sin amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos.

MARTIN CABALLERO Uno de los santos más populares de la época

medieval fue el soldado húngaro conocido como Martín Caballero o Martín de Tours (c. 315-397). Esta popularidad se debió a su biografía escrita por un discípulo, Sulpicio Severo. Su vida fue el mejor ejemplo de santidad a través de varios siglos. Contiene esta biografía

muchos de los acontecimientos, enseñanzas y milagros de la vida del santo que fue soldado en el ejército romano antes de su conversión. Muchos ignoran que fue monje, misionero y obispo por muchos años. Su imagen decora muchos almanaques latinoamericanos y él continúa siendo un santo popular. La representación más común de san Martín es la de un soldado romano sobre un caballo que rasga su manto rojo a la mitad con una espada para darle una parte a un pobre sentado a los pies del caballo. Según su biografía, Martín hizo esto durante el proceso de su conversión y resulta que el pobre limosnero se le aparece en un sueño revelándose como Cristo mismo, ya que lo que un cristiano hace por los pobres y marginados lo hace por Jesús. San Diego de Alcalá (Saint Dicacus) nació en 1400, en Andalucía, España. El fue un Hermano Franciscano y sirvió como un misionero en las Islas Canarias. El asistió al Gran Jubileo y a la ceremonia de canonización para Santa Bernardina de Siena en Roma en 1450 en donde una gran plaga surgió. El gano renombre por sus cuidados a los afligidos. El murió en Noviembre 12, de 1463, en Alcalá España. Pasaron varios meses antes de ser posible a su sepultura al Hermano Diego, entonces vinieron numerosas personas para venerar sus restos. Después de que sus restos fueron sepultados milagros continuaron ocurriendo en su tumba. El fue canonizado en 1588, y fue popular en el tiempo que los exploradores llegaron al Sur de California. San Diego de Alcalá es el Patrón de nuestra Diócesis y su día de fiesta es este Miércoles 7.
