... How long have there been parochial schools in the United States ? Longer than you may imagine! ... The Jesuit Fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782, in the first light of independ-ence. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as Saint Mary Inter-Parochial School, a shared parochial school. It is the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were established to pre-serve the culture and language of the “old coun-try”, and to protect young people from prejudice. ... We have been blessed with our Saint John School for over 56 years, and it was the need for a bigger school and church that was the driving force behind our move from Old Hwy 101 to Encinitas Blvd in 1988. We are still indebted to our Diocese to the tune of $862,000 for the construction of our present school, and we yearn for the day when we have satisfied that debt! ... Give our children the best, enroll them in our Saint John School! School Office Hours are 9:00am - 12:00pm, Monday to Friday, or call 760 944-8227. Classes resume on Thursday, August 23! ... All Young Adults (19-35) are welcome to be part of our ‘Faith on Fire’ sessions at Fuddruckers, Mira Mesa, on Monday (16), from 6:30pm, and for the Bahia Belle Boat Cruise on Saturday (21). For more info be sure to check out: www.yamsd.org ... A hearty welcome to Alan Rooney, Father Brian’s nephew, and his wife, Niamh, and children, James, Peter and Grace, visiting from Phoenix, and enjoying the sun and sand of Encinitas. ... Tuesday (10) is the 22nd Anniversary of Suc-cession of Bishop Brom as Bishop of San Diego. ... Kateri Tekawitha was born in Auriesville, in up-state New York in 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was baptized at the age of 20 by the Jesuit missionaries. She took a vow of chastity at the age of 22, and every day she spent hours in church in prayer, before her work in the fields. She died in 1680. Her last words were, “Jesus, Mary, I love you.” She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980, and is the first Native American ever to be beatified. She is known as ‘The Lily of the Mohawks’. Her feast day is this Saturday (14). ... “Here’s a simple test to find out whether your mission on earth is finished: If you’re alive, it isn’t.”
“God loves each one of us as if there were only one of us.” ... Our newest priest in San Diego is Father Jay Bananal and was ordained by Bishop Brom on Fri-day, June 8. Father Jay, aged 40, was a parish-ioner at Mission de Alcala, and studied for the priesthood at the North American College in Rome. Father Jay has been appointed Associate Pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi in Vista. Congratulations! ... Eight local men were ordained to the perma-nent diaconate, by Bishop Brom, on May 25, to serve in their respective parishes throughout the Diocese. “If you wish to be great, be a servant to others!” Bishop reminds us all. Congratulations! ... Our Fiesta De Las Flores is on Saturday, Au-gust 18, and Sunday, August 19. There will be lots of food, fun and entertainment for all throughout the Fiesta! Please plan to be with us. ... Our Grand Drawing has a first prize of $5,000, a second prize of $2,500, a third prize of $1,000 and a fourth prize of $500. HOSPITALIDAD, FE Y DISCERNIMIENTO

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The American Summer is officially underway, and people are on the move. Signs of hospitality are everywhere. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ visit home is hardly marked by hospitality. He goes up to the bema, the elevated place for solemn public reading of the Torah, and his message is poorly received. Today, we read from the descendant of the bema, the ambo, almost an “altar of the Word of God.” Many ancient ambos are preserved in Italy, decorated with marble, ivory, precious metal, and jewels. Six hundred years ago, the pulpit came into use, meant for preaching rather than proclamation of scripture. Before microphone systems, pulpits were often located halfway down the church, amid the gathered people, and not so clearly associated with the altar. Today, the ambo (the plural is “ambone”!) is an expected feature of our worship spaces because the Word is once again proclaimed to the people. Before 1964, typically the readings were done quietly by the priest at the altar in Latin, and optionally repeated in English from the pulpit. With the restored place of scrip-ture in our worship, a beautiful and worthy ambo, related in design to the altar table, has once again become a prominent and familiar feature of Catholic architecture.
