COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

Rules:

1. If an adjective has 1 syllable, we add –er in the comparative, and –est in the superlative

• E.g.: big- bigger- biggest

• Tom is bigger than Jerry.• Tom is the biggest.

2. If an adjective has 2 or more syllables, we add more in the comparative and most in superlative.

E.g.: beautiful- more beautiful- the most beautiful

Belle is more beautiful than Beast.Belle is the most beautiful.

There are a few exceptions:

Bad- worse- worst

Good- better- best

• Little (size) – smaller- smallest

• Far (place + time) – further- furthest

• Far ( place) – farther- farthest

• Late (time) – later- latest

• Late (order) – latter- lattest

• Near (place) – nearer- nearest

• Near (order) – next ( superlative)

• Old (people and things) – older- oldest

• Old ( people) – elder- eldest

• Much- more- most

• Little- less- least

• There is little milk left in the bottle.• We bought less milk yesterday.• The child refused to drink the

least milk.
