Chapter 13 The Renaissance

Section 3 Art and the ArtistQuestion: How did changes in art reflect new Renaissance ideals?

Art/Music Are Mirrors of Historical Time Periods

Rise of Patronage and Power-Wealthy individuals began sponsoring artists

-Why?- to glorify self and family-Some Patrons were heavily involved in work

-Pope constantly criticizing Michelangelo for painting graphically nude pictures-Others provided subject and left artist work

*Without the Patron there would be no Renaissance*

Changing Artistic Style of the RenaissanceChanging Topics

-Although Religious topics were still quite popular, topics became more secular- Classical Figures popularity rose-The Individual Portrait

*Sometimes All Three Were Infused*

Changing Style-Renaissance Artists began using

-Realism and Naturalism-Perspective-Chiaroscuro- using light and shade

-Frescos (painting on wet plaster) in Italy-Oil based paints by Northern Renaissance Artists

-Implemented by Giorgione, Titian, and Jan van Eyck-Allows FOR GREAT DETAIL IN COLOR AND CONTRAST

-Late Renaissance new style: -Mannerism- distorted figures and color to increase

emotion - reflected political and religious instability

Changing Beliefs-Middle Age- belief that it was God creating through individual artist-Renaissance- a work of art came from the genius of the individual

David By Donatello and Then Michelangelo
