Issue No.3: February 2017
From the Principal
It is the first full week back for students and we have lots underway.
On Tuesday we held elections for our School Captains. The ten very
impressive candidates completed their enthusiastic campaigns with
speeches in front of staff, student and parents. Everyone commented
on the high quality of their presentations. Everyone on staff spoke
about how difficult it was to make their choices (apart from for those
who did not vote because they had a child involved!).
The vote was very tight, but the result of the election is that Sophie
Connolly and Oscar Aliendi are our School Captains for 2017.
Congratulations to them and to all who stood for these positions.
The school is very fortunate to have such a high calibre group of
leaders in Grade 6 and we look forward to the important
contributions all of them will make in the year ahead.
This week also saw the beginning of Breakfast Club. There were a
good number of well-mannered students taking advantage of the
toast and milo on offer. Many thanks to Jodie Courtney for
volunteering and helping to make this happen. The school is very
fortunate to have such strong support from our parent community.
Another opportunity for involvement will come next month with the AGM and first
meeting of the School Association. A number of positions will be available and I
encourage all interested in nominating to get in touch with school.
This week has also seen several new members joining the school band, Midnight Fire. Mrs
Gardner was very impressed with the attitude of those taking part in the audition
process. Congratulations to the new band members: Archer Courtney, Walter Aitken,
Alice Maddock and Ronan Ansett. It is great to see how keen and committed students
are to take up extra opportunities such as this.
Because of the healthy numbers turning up for Launching into Learning, Pre-Kinder will
begin next Friday, earlier than was previously scheduled. We know that supporting
children’s learning before they begin school gives them a great head start and a greater
chance of success at school. So, it was wonderful, last Friday, to see so many parents and
children with Mrs Gardner playing, having fun and taking part in learning experiences
together.
The other big event we have next week is the Athletics Carnival. Preparations are in full
swing. I know that everyone here is eagerly anticipating the big day and I look forward to
seeing those parents and other members of the school community who are able to make
it along to this event.

South Arm School Association
The School Association is made up of volunteers including family representatives, school
representatives and community representatives. We are fortunate to have a very strong
School Association as part of the school community.
The School Association meets once a term, in the early evening – at the school. Being
a part of the School Association provides opportunity to discuss with the school areas
such as educational policy and planning within South Arm. The School Association
coordinates fund raising activities with money raised being directed straight into school
related programs and resources. Cynthia currently coordinates the school student
banking program.
2016 was a busy year for the School Association. We undertook a number of activities
including seeking donations for the schools music program (thanks Geoff Long and
McCanns), providing support to the Piggery production, applying for Sporting Schools
grants, support to the Grade 5/6 Pantomime production including a raffle, and the bush
dance.
In terms of expenditure, the School Association has funded the following:
Astro turf for the Kinder area $2,430.70
Repair of the drum kits $ 421.00
Grade 6 leavers tops $ 405.00
New blinds $1,381.00
Contribution to 5/6 camp $ 500.00
During 2015, the School Association held a quiz night and the money raised was
specifically for a new portable PA system for the stage area and school. This equipment
has been ordered and will be in place for 2017.
The Chairperson, Deputy chair, Secretary and Treasurer will be up for nomination.
We would encourage you to consider becoming a part of the School
Association in 2017.
Athletics Carnival
Our school athletics carnival will be held on Wednesday
1st March at 10am-2.30pm at the Calverton Oval.
We are hoping for a fun filled day with variety of different
races.
The main focus of the event is on participation and being the
best you can be in as many races as possible. A school team will be selected from
the event for the Div E SPSSA Athletics Carnival on Thursday
16th of March.
Any parents willing to help out on the day would be
greatly appreciated. Could you please give your name to
the school office and we thank you in advance.

BIRTHDAY BOOKS FOR OUR LIBRARY
New school parents and carers may not be aware that a few years ago we heard of a great idea that another school was using and decided to adopt the idea ourselves as a way to help the library. If your child is having a birthday, we would love it if you donated a book to the school library in their name. A certificate stating who the book has been donated by, and their date of birth, will be placed in the book. It is a wonderful way for your child to help build the school library and to share their celebration with their schoolmates. Donations can be left at the school office. Please write your child’s name and their date of birth on a loose piece of paper inside the book. Anyone wishing to make a belated birthday donation is welcome to do so.
