The student voice: passionate and persuasiveChristopher Jackson, Principal

The quote, “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept” became well known after 2016 Australian of the Year David Morrison used it as part of his campaign to champion gender equality in the army; however I believe it was first used by General David J. Hurley, former Governor of New South Wales. The reason I am mentioning this quote is because I used it recently with the Stage 2 classes. If you have a son or daughter in Mrs Miller’s or Miss Fogarty’s class they may have come home one day this week saying that they had to write a persuasive text to Mr Jackson asking that we don’t knock down the playground equipment to build another classroom.

The idea of this task was to have the children passionate about something they didn’t want to happen and come up with reasons why they disagreed with the plan. Obviously we aren’t going to knock down the playground but when reading the examples from both classes I could see the passion and persuasion come forward in every sample.

Providing the classes with feedback on Wednesday morning I explained that while this task wasn’t true, there will be situations and incidents in the future that they will feel

equally passionate about and it’s these situations where you need to stand up and make your opinion known. In other words don’t sit by and not do anything about it. “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.”

While making our thoughts known to others doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work out the way we want; however at least we know that it was considered and thought over.

Student voice is becoming very much a part of our ethos at Nemingha Public School and it’s certainly reflected in our Learning Dispositions: “Curious, Engage, Brave, Challenged, Collaborate, Determined and Reflect”. There will be more information about our Learning Dispositions in the next few Newslinks as our Think Team meet with Mr McDonald throughout first term.

P&C Annual General Meeting

School BankingSchool Banking is continuing at Nemingha this year. Students participating in School Banking get valuable hands-on money saving practice at a young age.

If you would like your child (younger siblings, cousins, etc are welcome also) to participate, please visit our local Commonwealth Bank and state that you wish to open a Dollarmite account. You will need to take along each child’s birth certificate. You will then be handed a welcome pack with their account number, Dollarmites deposit book and deposit wallet. You are then ready to participate in School Banking.

Children are asked to hand their completed deposit wallet in at the canteen before school each Monday. The wallet will then be returned to your child’s classroom to go home on Thursday.

If any parents would be available to help for a short time during the day on Thursday to put bank books in

class bags, it would be appreciated.

For further information and list of rewards follow the link www.commbank.com.au/banking/school-banking.html.
