I remember loving Sunday School growing up. Of course I had good teachers: Norma Hildebrand, Helen Jefferies, Gladys Newstrom, Gil Allan, Doug MonroeI had trouble understanding why we had to stay for church”. Sunday School was so much more fun. We were able to learn new things and ask a lot of questions. Lessons were usually done on a felt board with cutouts. Drama was always a part of class; either drama with the lesson or drama with the kids. A lot of times we would sing songs and do some sort of craft. At least we would color. As I grew older the appeal of the Bible classes did not diminish. I discovered that if you get the teacher talking you learn a lot more. Even today, Debbie and I rarely sit through a Bible class, wherever we go, and not ask a question or make a comment or ten. Yet, wherever we go, there is a marked difference in attendance between worshipand classes”. As I pondered the appeal of services over class I thought of Mr. Parkinsons quote. During services, we are passive participants. We sing, and do a good job. The lesson is presented to us and the preacher has done all the study and work. We have the benefit of his study and if we use it again it is usually prefaced by My preacher said…” We dont have to take responsibility for the message. It is his study and not ours. In class, you are expected to participate by asking questions or comment based upon your previous study. Class is much more vigorous when the participants can re- spond based on their Bible knowledge. You dont have to always agree. It takes more time and it takes more effort. The consequence is that the sermons are more meaningful because you have greater insight and can draw more from the lesson. You develop a hunger and thirsting to learn more about our marvelous God. Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessaloni- ca, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
