A&GG Welcome to Steamboat
Welcome to the community of Steamboat Springs, where the beauty of nature meets the vivid presence of the arts.
Humbled by the splendor of the valley, Steamboat is home to cultures that are active not only in recreational sports, but also visual and performing arts. Blessed by beautiful surroundings and access to many wonderful artistic and cultural venues, the arts in Steamboat flourish.
The art galleries in Steamboat provide our visitors opportunities to experience the flavor of Steamboat, beyond the greatest tree skiing in the world and our light, fluffy powder. Our multiple visual arts galleries showcase local, regional and national talent, and they offer irreplaceable pieces of art to become a reminder of your visit to the valley.
Steamboat not only has a strong presence in visual arts, but also performing arts. Musical events with renowned guests and talented

locals can be attended year-round at various venues. With an amazing amount of talent in music, dancing and acting, Steamboat’s performing arts community grows stronger every year.
Make sure to check out upcoming events on your visit, and experience the magic of the valley as so many have before you.
I truly hope you enjoy Steamboat for all that it has to offer. Beyond the ski resort and ranching lifestyle, Steamboat flourishes with an artistic culture as unique and remarkable as the nature surrounding it.
Very truly yours,
Clark DavidsonExecutive DirectorSteamboat Springs Arts Council

Carol Jean says she became an artist because it was a more attainable goal than playing for the LPGA.
That same sense of humor – plus a fair amount of whimsy – infuses Carol Jean’s work. “Fresh Air Painting,” the cover of the Summer 2010 edition of the “Yampa Valley Art & Gallery Guide,” is illustrative of her style. “When I go out and paint with my easel under an umbrella, people ask what I’m do-ing,” she explains. She’s employing plein-air painting techniques, which involve capturing an outdoor scene on the spot.
In Carol Jean’s case, she often sketches the
scene while she’s on site, then returns to her studio to interpet those original draw-ings with watercolor, oil or acrylics. “I do a lot of studio painting in the winter,” Carol Jean says.
‘Fresh Air Painting” was one of these pieces. Typi-cal of Carol Jean’s style, a hand holding a paintbrush dominates the foreground of the piece, set against a lush mountain backdrop. “I paint lots of hands. They invite the viewer to participate in the painting,” she says.
Northwest Colorado audiences have obviously accepted her invitation. In 2007, she won the People’s
Choice Award at the Emerald Anniversary Exhibit at the Depot, for her oil painting, “Cabin Hotel 1939.” A vase of flowers is the focal point of the painting, painted from the perspective of Woodchuck Hill with the Cabin Hotel in the background.
Carol Jean’s one-woman show at the Depot last spring was received with similar enthu-siasm. In Steamboat Springs, says the artist who migrated to Steamboat in 1974, “I fit in.”
Carol Jean’s work can be viewed online at www.artbycaroljean.com.

6 • Summer 2010
The Depot comes alive this summer as children are immersed in the arts during Kaleidoscope, three two-week camp sessions emphasizing dance, performing arts and visual arts.
Kaleidoscope was once a thriving program, but it had been dormant for two years when the Steamboat Springs Arts Council resur-rected the project last summer as a two-week theater workshop. By popular demand, the program is being expanded this summer to include dance and visual arts sessions as well.
“It was just amazing. It was so much fun, and there’s such a need for something like this in the community,” says Rachel Radetsky of the Arts Council.
“Discover Dance” is being presented in con-junction with the Steamboat Dance Theatre. The workshop includes costuming, dance education, stretching and flexibility and dance choreography. It culminates in a

performance at Art in the Park
“Let’s Play,” the theater workshop, is pre-sented with the Great American Laughing Stock Company and includes storytelling, educational theater games and collaborative play. It culminates in a performance at West Lincoln Park.
Artist Donna Steele instructs the visual arts camp, which is presented in conjunction with the Steamboat Arts & Crafts Gym. Stu-dents are creating their own pottery, design-ing a public mural, creating a personal art journal and painting sidewalks. Participants’ artwork is on display at the Depot during the All Arts Festival Block Party, Saturday, Aug. 22. Scholarships are available for all three camps.
An additional component includes shorter sessions and field trips for local daycare centers, for whom the Kaleidoscope staff will literally take their show on the road.

8 • Summer 2010
Steamboat Springs First Friday Artwalk is an art and cultural district with more than 24 downtown galleries, restaurants, businesses and shops.
The Artwalk, which began in 2008 with a mission to foster appreciation of the visual arts and support the growth of the local art community, often attracts hundreds of locals and visitors.
Exhibits encompass contemporary, emerging and traditional art including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, graphic art and textiles, combined with hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Musical performances often add to the experience at various venues.
No two Artwalks are alike, featuring the latest work by the local art community and entertainment ranging from classical music to rock’n’roll. The stops may vary from month to month but in general, most downtown galleries participate regularly, along with a handful of less conventional art venues,
including beauty salons, real estate offices and restaurants.
The Artwalk is held the first Friday of every month, 5-8 p.m., and is free. For current infor-mation and specific stops on any given Friday, visit www.steamboatspringsartwalk.com.
