As the mighty Yampa River flows through downtown Steamboat Springs with force and dedication, it reminds me of another beautifully powerful aspect of Steam-boat… arts and culture! It is with a true personal passion for the arts and their infinite manifestations that I welcome you to Steamboat and encourage you to seize the glorious opportunities our art and culture community offers.

Although a relatively new resident, I have visited this wonderful town throughout my life. I have been involved with contem-porary art academically and profes-sionally for a long time and have found this community to be thriving and ever evolving. As the new artistic director at the Arts Council, I am enjoying the vibrant surroundings and summertime that inspires so much of the arts and

culture in the Yampa Valley.

Each of our diverse art and cultural institutions offers quality experiences for any type of adventurer, art-lover or not. I recommend you peruse our visual arts this summer. You might discover a work of art to take home with you as a reminder of this beautiful environment.

Cover Artist — Andrée Hudson

Breaking the bounds of nature’s colors while adhering strictly to realistic proportions defines the style of artist Andrée Hudson. “I follow my own rules with color,” she says. “I don’t care what’s real. It’s the movement of a living creature that gets me excited.“

Hudson’s acrylic painting, “In the Mix,” on the cover of this edition of the “Yampa Valley Art & Gallery Guide,” demonstrates her dynamic style. Fuscia, orange and purple longhorn cattle roar down Lincoln Avenue in her depiction of Steamboat Springs’ Independence Day cattle drive.

“It’s an event I really enjoy,” Hudson says. “I get a lot of material from the cattle!” In fact, many of Hudson’s paintings have their origin in the beauty around Steamboat Springs, a place she enjoys throughout the year.

Hudson studied at the Mary-land Institute College of Art, receiving her bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration and visual communication. Early in her career, medical professionals took notice of her talent for capturing skeletal and muscular form, contracting her for illustrations in various medical publications and textbooks.

But Hudson’s true passion is letting the beauty of creation speak for itself through her paintings. Her colors demand attention, and the movement in her figures evokes the energy of each subject.

Hudson lives in Evergreen and is in the planning stages of building a home in Steamboat, where her daughters, Addie, 10, and Bella, 12, are on the Winter Sports Club Telemark Team.

Hudson’s work is displayed locally at Red Contemporary Gallery in the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. Her art can also be found at galleries throughout the West, including Santa Fe, N.M., Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Denver.

Energetic Celtic dance, breathtaking folk music, renowned opera singers, regional art exhibitions and an intriguing melo-drama are highlights of the All Arts Festival, Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 18-21.

Now in its third year, the festival is growing in size and diversity. With week-end-long festivities, there’s something for everyone, says Kara Givnish of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. “We like to represent different genres of art, and we especially want to highlight our local artists,” she says.

The festival kicks off with the Arts Council Member Show, featuring a sampling of works by regional artists. “I’m so excited for the Arts Council to open this art exhibition

and show our wide range of artistic work. It works as a great introduction, especially for tourists coming in to town,” says Clark Davidson, president of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council.

Among the festival’s other highlights are the annual Art Stroll and sale, live theater, opera, folk music and culinary experiences.

“Strings will present two great concerts, and we’re really excited to have both groups here,” says Betse Grassby of the Strings Music Festival. “The Red Horse trio consists of three talented and famous singer-song-writers who are all great friends, perform-ing together throughout the concert. John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Glkyson are truly folk music’s super-group.

“And The Barrage is an exciting, Canadian, fiddle-dance, music ensemble who are premiering their new touring show, ‘The Soundtrack of the World.’ It’s Celtic on stereoids!” Grassby says.

Emerald City Opera is presenting two productions during the festival, “Hansel and Gretel” and “Die Fledermaus,” featuring internationally renowned performers.

Families will enjoy an encore presentation of the Old West melodrama, “The Dirty Deeds at the Depot.” The play, which tells the story of a young heiress torn between her betrothed and her childhood love, lets the audience boo and cheer the actors as the plot thickens. “Last year we played it one night and we had a full house, so this

year we will do two nights; Friday and Saturday,” says Clark Davidson, president of the Arts Council.

“The arts are a key point in tourism and economic development. Steamboat has a strong heritage in the arts, which is exem-plified with this festival,” says Grassby.

year it’s all about enjoying ourselves. We have an amazing cast and it’s going to be loads of fun!” says ECO Artistic Director Keri Rusthoi.

The highlights of the opera-filled summer are the two full-length operas performed in August: Johann Strauss’ “Die Fled-ermaus” and Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.” “Die Fledermaus” features performers from the New York Metropolitan Opera and other leading opera companies. The production is staged in English and opens the Steam-boat All Arts Festival.

“It is an operetta, which is a more light-hearted, comedy form of opera. It’s going to be a Viennese party, a lot of ball gowns

and party scenes,” says Rusthoi.

“Hansel and Gretel,” the opera’s student production, premiers Sunday, Aug. 21. The performance resembles traditional opera with costumes and sets. “It’s a really good opera for families to go and see” says Jack Dysart, CEO of the opera.

Dysart speaks with pride about ECO. “Being able to make the highest level of music available in a rural area like this is just amazing. Many people around here might not be able to go to a big city and pay for expensive opera tickets, so it’s important that they can experience it here.”

The flourishing arts community in Steam-boat Springs has creative roots reaching back at least four decades. Four nationally renowned painters – Dennis Pendleton, Joan Hoffman, Shirley Stocks and Richard Galusha – began their careers in the Yampa Valley in the 1970s.

Today Steamboat boasts 20 art galleries and museums, but when watercolor artist Dennis Pendleton hitchhiked into Steam-boat in 1970, Lincoln Avenue had one lone gallery. He planned a short visit and stayed a decade before moving to Denver, where he taught at the Art Students League for 18 years.

Hoffmann moved to town in 1971 and called it home for 30 years. “The arts community

was really active, even back then, even though it was a small town,” she recalls. Since then, her work as a conservation artist has earned centennial recognition from the Sierra Club, which named her one its 100 heroes of the last 100 years.

Pendleton and Hoffmann remember the conversion of the train depot into the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot, the establishment of the Steamboat Springs Art Council and the beginning of Art in the Park.

“Steamboat is why I started my painting career,” says Pendleton. “That’s where I first made friends among artists.”

into the artistic flurry. In the mid-‘70s, Stocks took a job with the Arts Council. In 1986, Richard moved to town to teach high school art. Since then, Galusha has been recognized as a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, and he and Stocks have traveled the world in pursuit of their art. Together, the couple owns Wild Horse Gallery in Steamboat.

Pendleton returns to town Monday-Friday, July 11-15, to host a watercolor work-shop. Hoffmann also comes home this summer to host an anniversary exhibit, “Landscape Paintings – 40 years in Routt County,” at the Depot, July 1-Aug. 7. For these four landscape artists, the valley is a visual experience – a playground for their paintbrushes.

The various locations showcase a diver-sity of media – paintings, photography, textiles, graphic art, sculptures and mixed media. First Friday is an opportunity to interact with artists from Steamboat and other areas as well. “We have always encouraged guest artists,” says Rick Meoli of the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat. Each Artwalk is a fresh sight; no two are alike.

“The entire venue seems to be ever-changing. There are always new things happening and new art to see,” says Todd Savalox, owner of Thomas D. Mangelsen’s Images of Nature gallery in Steamboat. First Friday Artwalk began locally in 2008, and thrives today to display and foster the growth of the art community. “It’s not just about selling art,” explains Meoli. “It’s

also about bringing people together.”

Venues vary monthly, but most downtown galleries participate regularly, along with other local businesses. Musicians perform at some of the stops, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine are occasionally offered as well. It’s free, family-friendly and fun for all.
