A&GGWelcome to our Winter Wonderland

My office window at the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts in the historic train depot provides an unobstructed view up the Yampa River to Mount Werner. With 10-plus days of snow one week before opening, I can confirm that your choice to ski Steam-boat this winter was the right decision!

From many locals, you often hear, “I came for the winter, but summer’s why I stayed.” Not me. Winter is my favorite season here in Steamboat. After living away for nearly 10 years and skiing all over the western United States, I returned to Steamboat for the exceptional snow, the thriving arts community, and the friendly Western charm of the folks who live here.

Numerous artists have created their own interpretation of the Yampa Valley’s beauty, both winter and summer. What is hard to put into words has been expressed in artistic media. Consider taking home your own memory of Steamboat with an amazing piece of local art.

Steamboat is home to a plethora of wonderful art galleries, displaying the works of our local visual artists. This beautiful publication provided by our locally owned Steamboat Magazine is an outstanding guide to our art galleries, museums and cultural institutions.

Our small town in the Rocky Mountains is host to many outstanding artists and art organizations who strive as hard as our ski area to entertain you on your vacation. Check with your concierge or contact us at the Arts Council (970-879-9008) about ongoing art exhibitions.

I sincerely hope you have a wonderful vacation here in Steamboat this winter, and I encourage you to visit us in the summer, as we look forward to seeing you again!

Very truly yours,

Clark DavidsonExecutive DirectorSteamboat Springs Arts Council

A&GG Cover Artist - Maggie Smith

Maggie Smith’s monotype, “Shadows,” immediately caught the attention of the judges who selected the cover art for this winter’s edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Gallery Guide.

Of course, this is Ski Town USA®, so there’s a natural inclination toward images of pristine powder amid aspens. And it’s probably not surprising that Maggie is a skier as well as an artist. To create “Shad-ows,” named after Steamboat’s legendary tree run, she worked from photographic images.

To create a monotype, artists roll ink onto a plate, removing ink from the parts where they want the paper or colors from previous passes to appear, place paper on top of the plate and run it through a press.

“It’s an application and removal process,” Maggie says. “It’s a little like ceramics, when you open the door to the kiln to see what’s inside. With a monotype, every time you put paper and plate through the press, you see how it interacts with the earlier layers. You have to think about it spatially and logistically.”

Monotypes and ceramics are two of Maggie’s media; she also enjoys working in oils and sculpture. She is currently studying for her bachelor of fine arts degree at the University of

Wyoming in Laramie.

Maggie started printmaking and oil painting when she took classes at Colo-rado Mountain College in 2002/03. “I got hooked on it,” she recalls with a smile.

“I’m inspired by nature,” she says. Since last May, she has been creating artwork around the theme of water. She created an outdoor sculpture of blocks of water and fish and also a piece consisting of three large water drops, in addition to oil paintings and prints surrounding the aquatic theme.

Maggie is represented by the Artists’ Gallery of Steamboat, where she is one of three featured artists in January. Her work is also on display at the Center for Visual Arts.

A&GG Strings Expands Winter Series

Extasis, an authentic tango quartet, will perform Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Strings Music Pavilion.

From an Irish Christmas to flamenco guitar – with tango, bluegrass and African dance in between – Strings Music Festival presents its premiere winter season of monthly performances.

“The winter series is a sampling of the diverse programming our audiences have come to expect during our regular summer season,” says Strings’ Executive Director Kay Clagett.

“As we approach our 24th season, expanding our programming outside of the summer months provides locals and visitors the highest quality entertainment throughout the year at the Strings Music Pavilion.”

The series begins Tuesday, Dec. 21, with legendary fiddler Eileen Ivers and Immi-grant Soul celebrating a Celtic Christmas. On Wednesday, Dec. 22, Strings presents its annual family concerts, featuring the zany antics of juggler/dancer Peter Davison – plus a guest appearance by the Sugar Plum Fairy!

The Golden Era of Tango comes to town on Wednesday, Jan. 26, with Extasis, an authentic tango quartet performing repertoire from the Golden Age of tango.

The concert on Tuesday, Feb. 22, features 2011 Grammy nominees Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent, three-time winners of

Jamie Dailey & Darrin Vincent, an international bluegrass band, will perform Tuesday, Feb. 22.

International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainers of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year awards. They were recently nominated for a Grammy for best country performance.

For African dance and drum aficionados, the appearance of Step Afrika! on Friday, March 18, represents one of the high points of winter. The Washington D.C.-based performers are world-renowned for their high-energy percussive dance.

The winter season finale is Friday, April 1, when Willie and Lobo return, bringing overtones of salsa, reggae, jazz, Scottish reels, Middle Eastern chants, Irish jigs

and zydeco.

The winter series marks a milestone for Strings Music Festival, which began almost 24 years ago. Since packing the house – literally to the roof – at that first concert, Strings has become a venerable institution in Steamboat. The Strings Music Pavilion was completed in 2008, providing a beautiful venue for performances throughout the year ranging from chamber music, Ameri-cana, family, orchestra and world music from award-winning and world-class musicians. A discounted Winter Series Pass is available through December 30 for performances January through April for only $99, a savings of $28.

Step Afrika! will perform an African Drum & Dance set Friday, March 18.

The series features award-winning foreign and independent films that are hot off the film festival circuit and as-yet unreleased to the public. The evening also includes an award-winning short.

The library and Steamboat Springs Arts Council host this year-round, free film screening on the third Friday of each

month at the Depot.

Arts Council President Kelly Anzalone runs the projector – “and makes awesome real movie-theater popcorn,” Lay says. Beer and wine are available for purchase.

“It’s so social, so amenable,” says Irene Nelson, a frequent attendee. “I like the fact that the library and the Arts Council are making these films available. They’ve done a fabulous job of selecting them.”

After the community film night, each of these films becomes a part of the library collection.

About 150 dancers are performing in Steamboat Dance Theatre’s annual concert Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12. That’s double the number in the 2010 concert.

“The dance community here amazes me,” says Jenny Meier, co-producer of the concert. “It’s such a gift. It’s very rare for a small town to have so much dance.”

Local dance roots go back to Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield, who opened a summer dance/equestrian camp in 1913. Today Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp is the oldest in the nation. Students come from around the world each summer to study dance, theater and equestrian skills. Registration starts in January.

“I was surprised to find all the dance here,” says Renee Fleischer, an accomplished dancer and former San Diego Charger cheerleader who opened Elevation Dance Studio last year. “Steamboat is a very artsy community, and people embrace all styles.”

Ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, belly dance, hip hop, Irish, African and zumba are currently offered at Elevation Studio and other venues. “We’re starting to bring in talent from Denver and the Front Range to expand our workshop programs,” Fleis-cher says.

Youngsters start as early as the age of 3 with instructors like Wendy Smith Mikel-sons, who teaches at the Depot, and Karin Comeau of Rocky Mountain Dance. “Miss Karin” has been teaching dance since 1977. “I’m so blessed,” she says. “I get to work with them for years and years. I get to be a part of their lives.”

Many teenage dancers perform in the annual high school Dance Showcase. For

more than 10 years, this energetic event has been attracting spectators from the entire community. About 100 dancers are performing in this year’s showcase Thurs-day-Saturday, Jan. 28-30. “The kids do it all themselves,” says faculty adviser Kelly Erickson. From choreography to fund-raising, the project is student-run.

After high school, some dancers continue training in college; others become life-long dance aficionados. “I feel like every-body should dance for their whole life!” Miss Karin says.

“Steamboat is a little Camelot that has always had a huge arts influence,” Miss Karin explains. “Not only do you get your sports, but you get your arts too.”

A&GG First Friday Hits Its Stride

After only four years in Steamboat Springs, First Friday Artwalk has become a standing event on locals’ calendars.

This self-guided art tour of downtown venues takes place the first Friday evening of every month. The event regularly attracts hundreds of locals and visitors.

“It goes on all over the coun-try,” says First Friday presi-dent Linda Laughlin. “It’s become a great date night out.”

No two First Fridays are alike, as both the venues and featured artists change monthly. “The Artwalk provides the opportunity to see fine art, and it also features emerging artists. It

allows us to incubate artists whose work has not yet achieved commercial value.”

At some point in his career, legendary Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir probably set up his easel along the River Seine, Laughlin surmises. Similarly, emerging artists in Steamboat who are not yet represented by established galleries have the opportunity to hang their work at coffee shops, hair salons and cafés.

“This is how great art begins,” Laughlin notes. “Usually in some local, unknown place. It’s exciting to think that things

Exhibits encompass contemporary, emerging and traditional art including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, graphic art and textiles. At many venues, hors d’oeuvres and beverages are served. Musicians sometimes perform at various stops as well.

The stops may vary from month to month, but most downtown galleries participate regularly, along with a handful of other businesses. The Artwalk runs from 5-8 p.m. and is free. For current information and specific stops for a particular month, visit www.steamboatspringsartwalk.com.
