Summer Fun in the Living Spirit

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice … your spiritual worship…” – Romans 12:1

Noticing all the people out and about when the glori-ous warm weather appeared recently, it was like we were a bunch of lab rats finally let out of our cages! People were all of the sudden, outside, out and about doing everything fun and serviceable in the sun. Gar-dening, mowing, exercising, weeding, fix-it jobs, do-ing errands, heading to the beach, and you name it. People were out of their houses and into the great outdoors.

To me this is what summer is all about. School will soon be out unless one is doing summer school. And even that is different than the ordinary schedule for the rest of the year.

But the Promise of our living God is that the extraordinary work of the Spirit continues on his amazing minis-try through you and me regardless. This is what Paul the apostle is saying to those Roman Christians about our bodies being a “living sacrifice.” It isn’t an offering to God to make a relation-ship. You have that already. It isn’t to win points with God. Not the way it works at all, of course. It is more along the lines of being “living service” that comes from outside of us from God alone. God is working for the good of our neighbors through us.

Which is to say our lives in the Spirit are not occa-sional services by nature. Rather, when the Spirit has a hold of us, it is a living faith, a calling by faith. A life gifted and empowered by the living God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That means God is bestowing gifts of the Spirit on God’s people to be encouraged in faith and to encourage others in faith.

God promises to make the Body of Christ, the Church, what God wants it to become. And God lays out and bestows the gifts of the Spirit on his Church

so that the Body may be renewed and transformed. And that Body lives by “life-giving” service and wit-ness to what God is doing.

Whatever you do this summer for fun, exercise, re-freshment, personal study, goofing off, camping, hik-ing, traveling, good fellowship, entertainment, ser-vice, family bonding times, weddings, and inspiring worship—may it all be to the glory of the One working

his perfect will in and through you.

God is making “his living” ef-fective in us by renewing our faith in what God is up to. God is doing that every day, non-stop for God’s own.

But in the summertime, what God is doing feels especially “freeing, renewing, new.” By the living mercies of God, have at it for a fun-filled summer- in this season of the Spirit who came at Pentecost. We kick off our celebration of the Holy Spirit’s coming at Pentecost to

re-create us anew on Sunday June 4th. Kick off the Summer in Christ, living in you, the hope of glory. And then live by that powerful spirit of resurrection daily.

Reading a good book, swinging a golf club, spiking a volleyball, painting the house or getting hands dirty in the soil, marveling at a sunset, catching a silver, worshiping a Savior who gives us all we need and more- this is my hope for the summer.

Soaking up the rays in God’s sure and radiant prom-ises in Christ, in season and out!

Summer Opportunities for Witness and Service

*June 4 Pentecost Sunday with a Global Food Court following worship in the narthex, celebrating the variety of foods from around the world, as well as the wide expanse of mis-sion Christ has shown.

*June 4 is also Graduate Recognition Sunday. Trinity has several high school and college graduates this year. Good job everybody!

*June 11 Last day of Sunday School.

*June 18 First day of Summer Worship Schedule (9:30 am).

*June 26 - August 11 Summer Meals Program in Brickyard Park. Trinity hands out brown bag lunches (made and administered by Share House) to kids as well as adults from noon until 1:00 pm in Brickyard Park. This is Monday through Friday through most of the summer. Volunteers are recruited by Jack Johnson, so if you'd like to check out this ministry, see Jack.

*July 8-14 High School Youth Mission Trip to Costa Rica (with Praying Pelicans Mis-sion) Our team will be teamed up with a church from Tulsa Oklahoma while in Costa Rica and will help Pastor Servano, Biblica Iglesia Rio Canas, with VBS for children, sports and games for teens, and with some wall repair for classrooms or other projects as needed on the church building. Please pray for our youth as they have this awesome opportunity to share the love of Jesus with Christians near and far.

*July 12 Revive Wednesday...Jesus, Jazz and Joe (and/or maybe a smoothie :-) 6:45 pm We only have one Revive Wednesday in July. Please come and bring a friend.

*July 23-28 Confirmation Camp at Lutherwood for Middle School age youth. This is a great week for our teens to get away, have fun together, work out group puzzles, as well as some consistent study together with Pastor and Youth Director. Soon-to-be 6th graders and outgoing 8th graders are all encouraged to sign up. Trinity covers half the cost of Camp.

Summer Opportunities for Witness and Service

*August 6 Joint Worship with WOKBC and Picnic. This summer we have reserved a shelter at Frenchman's Bar for our Church Picnic. The Washington Oregon Kachin Baptist Church is our partner con-gregation that worships in Stolee Hall Sundays at 1 pm. We seek to grow in fellowship with one another, and so look for opportunities to join in worship, fellowship, and mission. The annual church joint worship and picnic is a great time to grow in knowledge and love for one another. More details coming soon.

*August 7-11 Vacation Bible School!!! Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. We are using Group's curriculum...Passport to Peru: Discovering God's Good Gifts. All preschool kids to 6th graders are encouraged to sign up. Youth older than the 6th grade are now consid-ered best helpers. Day One: God's Comfort; Day Two: God's Patience; Day Three: God's Peace; Day Four: God's Love; Day Five: God's Joy. We are excited about this faith-igniting, cross-cultural VBS as our kids learn about Peruvian culture and maybe even get to have a live llama on the scene!

*August 9 Revive Wednesday...Jesus, Jazz, and Joe. 6:45 pm We only have one Revive Wednesday in August. (We will be going to full time again in September.) Join us for some great midweek refreshment of the spirit.

*August 26 Back-to-School Supplies and Block Party 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Trinity con-tinues to serve our partner schools Lincoln Elementary, Discovery Middle School and Hudson Bay High School with free backpacks and school supplies. Along with this give-away, we serve lunch and have games out in the parking lot, an eye exam, kids clothing closet and more. Stay tuned to when Nancy and Peggy bring out the supply lists (once the sales hit)

**Other activities in the planning: The painting of Stolee Hall.

Day hike in the Gorge or St. Helens.

This summer brings some GREAT opportunities. As you can see, it will take the entire

village to make a giant impact for Jesus. Let's do it together!

TIDINGS

Happy Lunch Bunch will meet for our June Potluck on Thursday, June

15, at noon. Please bring one food item to share. We will hear reports

from recipients of scholarships from Trinity’s Foundation and a represen-

tative from the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee will update us on the

Scholarship Fund. Join us for a fun time, fine food, and a great opportu-

nity to hear from our young adults and be informed about the Scholarship

Fund.

Thursday June 22nd WAAAM Museum in Hood River

The museum collection is housed in over 3.5 acres of indoor hangar

facility. Plan to spend at least an hour or two to get an idea of what is

here. For the enthusiast, a day can be too short to see all of the cars,

planes, motorcycles, military vehicles, and more. Listen to the stories,

talk to a docent, recount your own memories. Step back in time with the

Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum. 1600 Air Museum Rd, Hood River, OR 97031

Admission: $12 per person. We will leave Trinity by 9:30 am; it takes 1 1/2 hours by vehicle. We will

spend about 2 hours in the Museum. We can get lunch there or close by on way home.

Revive Wednesdays

Jesus, Jazz and a Cup of Joe! Please come and invite friends to join you for this informal midweek

refresher. During the summer months we will meet May 31, June 7, June 14, July 12, and August

9. Starting in September 2017 we will return to worship weekly. Please come to worship, pray, and

fellowship with us and the Lincoln Community.

June Is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

June 21st “The Longest Day” is all about love. Love for all those affected by Alzheimer's disease”.

Three pounds—three parts

Your brain is your most powerful organ, yet weighs only about three pounds. It has a texture similar to firm jelly.

It has three main parts:

The cerebrum fills up most of your skull. It is involved in remembering, problem solving, thinking, and feeling. It also controls movement.

The cerebellum sits at the back of your head, under the cerebrum. It controls coordination and balance.

The brain stem sits beneath your cerebrum in front of your cerebellum. It connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate and blood pressure.

Alzheimer's changes the whole brain

Alzheimer's disease leads to nerve cell death and tissue loss throughout the brain. Over time, the brain shrinks dramatically, affecting nearly all its functions.

These images show:

A brain without the disease

A brain with advanced Alzheimer's

How the two brains compare

More brain changes

Here is another view of how massive cell loss changes the whole brain in advanced Alzheimer's disease. This slide shows a crosswise "slice" through the middle of the brain between the ears.

In the Alzheimer brain:

The cortex shrivels up, damaging areas involved in thinking, planning and remem-bering.

Shrinkage is especially severe in the hippocampus, an area of the cortex that plays a key role in formation of new memories.

Ventricles (fluid-filled spaces within the brain) grow larger.
