“Connecting People to Jesus and Others” Joyfully Following Jesus Depending on what you’ve been facing, the Bible’s advice in Philippians 4:4 might be like nails screeching on a blackboard: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This year we’ve emphasized living your faith in Jesus. That means taking opportunities to share what and why you believe; standing up for truth; defeating sin; and living according to God’s advice, even if it’s “weird” (according to the world). If we are living our faith, it will show up in another area an attitude of our lives: disciples of Jesus are characterized by joy. So instead of being grouchy, rejoice! Philippians is a book about joy. Inspired by God, Paul recognizes the common “joy-stealers” faced by followers of Jesus: Circumstance (chapter 1) People (chapter 2) Things (chapter 3) and Worry (chapter 4) Which of these most often attacks your joy? Philippians is the most joyful book of the Bible, but it’s not because Paul has a happy life. He’s in prison on trial for his mission and message. The legal process threatens his very life. Yet he writes to encourage disciples of Jesus to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. They do this by joyfully following Jesus by having a mind set, not on circumstances, people, stuff, or anxieties, but a mind set on Christ his message, his model, his promises, and his protection. “Connecting People to Jesus and Others”

Joyfully Following Jesus

Depending on what you’ve been facing, the Bible’s advice in Philippians

4:4 might be like nails screeching on a blackboard: “Rejoice in the Lord

always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This year we’ve emphasized living

your faith in Jesus. That means taking opportunities to share what and

why you believe; standing up for truth; defeating sin; and living according

to God’s advice, even if it’s “weird” (according to the world).

If we are living our faith, it will show up in another area – an attitude – of

our lives: disciples of Jesus are characterized by joy. So instead of being

grouchy, rejoice! Philippians is a book about joy. Inspired by God, Paul

recognizes the common “joy-stealers” faced by followers of Jesus:

Circumstance (chapter 1)

People (chapter 2)

Things (chapter 3) and

Worry (chapter 4)

Which of these most often attacks your joy?

Philippians is the most joyful book of the Bible, but it’s not because Paul

has a happy life. He’s in prison on trial for his mission and message. The

legal process threatens his very life. Yet he writes to encourage disciples

of Jesus to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

They do this by joyfully following Jesus by having a mind set, not on

circumstances, people, stuff, or anxieties, but a mind set on Christ – his

message, his model, his promises, and his protection.

Join us in worship this summer as God’s word teaches us how to possess

a living joy.

Independence 237 years ago the Founding Fathers of our great United States of America made public their Declaration of Independence from the sovereignty of Great Britain. They signed their names in blood, as it were, in affect signing their own death warrants as traitors to the throne of King George III of England. They believed the freedom their efforts would bring to the people gathered on this soil was worth any cost. Their sacrifices bought our freedom.

CEO of Olive Branch Mission, Pastor David Bates has given up the traditional comforts of many of his colleagues in ministry, a family life with wife and children, a safe neighborhood, a nice church building in suburbia with clean, well-dressed parishioners…. David’s sacrifices are bringing freedom to those in slavery to fear, hate, poverty, drugs, sex, and violence. (Full version.)

Chaplain Martin Adamson and wife Kristi have committed their prime ministry years to serving our military troops, family-members, civilian workers, and all who brush up against the United States Air Force…. Martin’s family’s sacrifices have saved the lives of Airmen, and brought freedom to those living in darkness. (Full version.)

My grandparents, Charles and Vina Magers lived out most of their lives farming and logging in a small Northern Idaho community called Sanders…. Charlie and Vina’s lives of sacrifice and service brought freedom to scores of people in the outlying area to whom they ministered in tangible ways throughout their daily lives, to hundreds of campers who gave their lives to God at the old log altar Charlie cut off his place. (Full version.)

Two of my Soldiers, Scott Nisely and Kampha Sourivong set off into the desert in pursuit of insurgents their convoy security element spotted placing a roadside bomb on 30 September 2006…. I can tell you they didn’t want to die, but they were willing to do so for the sake of independence. Their blood was spilled on Iraqi soil to bring freedom to an oppressed and impoverished people group, and to maintain ours. (Full version.)

Our culture has confused the meaning of the word “freedom.” It is understandable that many Americans today hold a philosophy of freedom that is upside down from God’s perspective. Freedom is often interpreted as “my right to do as I please.” This kind of individualistic perception of freedom brings slavery to those who exercise it and rains down terror and devastation on those on whom it is exercised. We may have to abandon the word altogether, it has become so skewed. Perhaps “liberty” is still a usable and useful word, bringing with it the connotation of sacrifice, as in Patrick Henry’s famous words in 1775, “Give me liberty or give me death.”

The paradox, of course, is that as we pursue more personal freedom as defined by greater comfort, a gain in money and stuff, and the ability to do whatever we want, we end up in destruction, despair, isolation, emptiness, addiction and poverty. On the other hand, as we live our lives in sacrifice to God and service to others, giving up our freedom at every turn, we end up in growth, joy, community, fulfillment, and ultimately, eternal success.

Independence Day should remind us that true freedom from slavery to sin and from the decimation it brings to our lives is really wrapped up in interdependence. We find political freedom through the sacrifices of bold men and women who have been willing to die for our liberty. We find freedom from the cultural bondage of racism, sexism, ageism, domestic abuse, human trafficking and slavery through the courageous actions and voices of those who risk everything to stand up and be heard. We find liberty from personal ills, gambling, alcohol abuse, sexual addiction, workaholism, overeating and eating disorders through the bravery of small communities of people willing to admit and confront these freedoms gone awry and work together to find victory. And all of these heroes promoting independence find an even greater strength and reservoir of courage when they proclaim their interdependence to their Creator and commit to using their liberty to set free those in bondage around them. (Full version.)

Isaiah prophesied, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Jesus said, “The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life."

In this season as we celebrate the freedom we gained from an oppressive regime so many years ago, and especially as we come more to grips with our place in the global village, let us understand that our independence is tied to interdependence. We are set free to serve and bring freedom to others, not to pursue our own selfish ends. Let us not drift far from this precedent set by our Founding Fathers, and by our Heavenly Father.

Freedom is not free, and earthly peace has no guarantee.
