Five members of the Shermalot Water Ski Show Team can be seen ski-ing barefoot Wednesday evening as the team performed its regular Wednesday show at the dam at Lake Arrowhead in the town of Rome south of Wisconsin Rapids. The team performs on Lake Arrowhead every Wednesday and Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through the Labor Day weekend.

The Air Force Achievement Medal recently was awarded to Airman First Class Joshua Roatch. Roatch distinguished him-self by outstanding achievement as a security response member,of the 341st Missile Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mon-tana.While on patrol to perform a site as-sessment on one of Malmstrom’s mis-sile launch facili-ties, Roatch and his partner discovered a mangled vehicle that was over-turned. Roatch and Sgt. Matt Meade, being the fi rst re-sponders, assessed the accident and established, erected and attained all necessary fi rst aid and fi rst response for the survival and successful recovery of Greg Herman of Hilger, Mont. “The doctors tell me that if the Air Force guys would not have come along and provided the medical attention they did, I would not be here today,” Herman said.

The second an-nual Adams County Stuff the Bus will be held Aug. 20. A school bus donated by the Adams-Friendship Area School District will drive to local organizations hold-ing school supply drives, where volun-teers will actually “stuff the bus” with donations.On Aug. 24 and 25, backpacks fi lled with school supplies will be distributed to needy Adams County children. All children who live in Adams County and whose families are in need of fi nancial assistance, qualify for the program. To receive an ap-plication, please stop into the Adams County Health and Human Services of-fi ce between Aug. 1 and 20. We are looking for local businesses, churches, schools, service organiza-tions in Adams County to become offi cial Stuff the School Bus drop-off locations. These locations will collect

SnapshotsADAMS — Twenty years and thou-sands of chicken nuggets later, Shir-ley Horner is set to leave the kitchen.The food services director for the Adams-Friendship Area School Dis-trict the past two decades, Horner en-joyed her last day of school and retired this summer.Horner was respon-sible for making more food available to more students in the School District than in years past, thanks to the dis-trict’s breakfast and summer meals pro-grams.But diabetes and age took their toll, so she wants to step away to accomplish more things in life.“It made me realize there’s a few other things I want to try to do. I’m going to miss my kids, and I’m going to miss my staff, but I think it’s going to be a good thing,” she said.Horner’s district has one of the state’s highest pov-erty rates with 68

Mondays were the toughest day of the week to provide lunches.“When they came back (from the weekend) on Mon-day, whatever we have, they ate more,” Horner said. “We have an idea they don’t get a lot dur-ing the weekends, some of them maybe nothing.“I try to put extra carbs on the menus on Monday just to help fi ll them up, and maybe that’s not the right thing to do because of the obesity, but you can

tell how they eat.”Horner said it’s hard to believe how some families sus-tain themselves in Adams County with parents providing a living on part-time wages.“When I see the in-comes that come in on free and reduced applications, and what the families are living on, I can’t imagine living on that,” Horner said.In the future, Horner expects the fed-eral government to change what foods are served to stu-dents, but fi rst, she hopes the state Leg-islature will drop the reduced assistance

category. Removing that category would open up free lunches for more families.“I had the hard-est time collecting money from the kids on reduced lunch,” Horner said. “And I can’t turn a kid down; if a kid shows up in line and he says he’s hungry and he wants to eat, I feed him.”The main reason Horner isn’t sad to leave the district is because of who is taking her position.Vicki Marcucci, who went to school for di-etetics, was tabbed as Horner’s succes-sor.“I have a passion

about food and good nutrition,” said Mar-cucci, who is friends with Horner. “I’ve

always lived my life that way, always making good meals for my kids.


Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is proud to announce the birth of four additional wild, whooping crane chicks. Whoop-ing crane pairs be-gan nesting early in May and after a month of sitting and tending to their nests, the staff wel-comed siblings W4-10 and W5-10 born on June 10, W6-10 born on June 11 off of the refuge in Ju-

neau County, and W7-10 on June 13. These little ones are a welcomed ad-dition to two other wild-born whooping cranes born the end of May. W1-10 and W3-10 have been sighted and report-ed to be doing well. Crane trackers and biological staff con-tinue to monitor the chicks, from a dis-tance. Chicks are checked four times a day. Adult whoop-

ing cranes continue to care and forage with the chicks near their nesting areas. Adults 3-04 and 9-03* with chick W1-10 can be seen from the refuge’s observation tower or classroom build-ing with a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope.Everyone is wel-come to visit Nece-dah National Wildlife Refuge to celebrate the birth

SnapshotsROME— Farmers markets, a common sight this time of year, offer a variety from local agricul-tural gurus.Organizers hope to feed more than stomachs during the weekly Friday Rome Farmers Mar-ket; they also want to nourish attend-ees’ minds.Almost every week during the third season of the sum-mer event, guest speakers such as Jonathan Smith, president of Alpine Foods in Rome, give presentations or demonstrations or provide entertain-ment in the Alpine Business Park ga-zebo.A week ago, Smith discussed new and different cranberry products — includ-ing the new Berry Bits -- while Chris Sohns, also of Al-pine Foods, pre-pared samples of a variety of recipes for market-goers, including chicken Berry Bits salad and smoothies.

“Our inspiration was to bring more community mem-bers into this park and to help the ven-dors,” said Ruthann Spiegelhoff, one of the Rome Farmers Market volunteer managers.High gasoline pric-es helped the farm-ers market its fi rst year.“I think the fi rst year, gas was about $4 a gallon,” said Judy McCormick, one of the market’s volunteer manag-ers. People weren’t traveling to the roadside markets to get the fresh goods, so McCormick and Spiegelhoff asked vendors to go to the park.“And they have, and they continue to come,” McCormick said.Spiegelhoff and Mc-Cormick, both of Rome, aim to fi nd ways to keep mar-ket offerings fresh in other ways. Last year, they scheduled a handful of gazebo presentations, and this year, almost every Friday has something for visi-tors, most often at

10:30 a.m.Thanks to a grant from the Commu-nity Foundation of Greater South Wood County, or-ganizers expanded their offerings this summer. Scheduled events include guest chefs from local res-taurants, gardening tips and health in-formation.Rhonda Funmaker’s June appearance was the result of a recent grant from the foundation.A member of the Ho-Chunk Bear Clan, Funmaker has a goal of preserving the traditions and cultures of the Ho-Chunk Nation. The Friendship resident planned to bring some foods native to the area and of-fer cooking tips and techniques.Rain or shine, the market is held ev-ery week, and peo-ple go to enjoy the park and other resi-dents.“One of things that Judy and I have found is it’s a com-munity meeting place,” Spiegelhoff said.
