• Germany has A-H back– declares war on Russia and France
• Germany attacks France through Belgium, England has Belgium's back
World War I Begins• Allied Powers- England,
France, Russia and later the US
• Central Powers- Germany, A-H, Turkey and later Italy
• Germany wants to defeat France quickly and then focus east on Russia– Schlieffen Plan
• Germans attack France through Belgium, Belgians put up good fight– slows them down
• British & French stop the Germans NE of Paris along the Marne River– Battle of the Marne
• Fighting becomes a stalemate– neither side makes progress
• Trench warfare begins from the English Channel to the Alps– the Western Front
• Russia and Germany start fighting on Eastern Front
