A fter this one-of-a-kind and incredibly charming bistro opened its doors last winter

it was quickly labeled as Aspen’s newest hot spot. The Crêperie is certain to have you upload pics and posts about their savory and sweet French delights and the equally captivating bohemian al-pine interior. Just a block from the iconic Hotel Jerome and located next to some of Aspen’s best places to shop, it is the ideal spot to grab lunch or meet up with your

entourage after a day of summer fun or an evening of music.

If you are on the lookout for an affordable and gemütlich* place to bring the family, then reserve a table inside or on the patio and begin the discussion about the sweet crêpe selections that will make your mouth water with antici- pation. Try the “Midnight in Paris”, a delicious combination of Crème Brulèe and Crispy Caramel or “The Schokoladepalatschinke”, an Aus-trian style Chocolate Crêpe, fi lled with Chocolate Ganache, Dulce de Leche, Strawberries, Bananas & Whipped Cream. The French and Austrian proprietors have added a new fl are for the summer: the “Street Bar.” It is the only place in town where you can indulge in a glass of French wine and traditional Swiss Cheese Fondue, while watch-ing the hustle and bustle of down-town Aspen and the awe-inspiring sunset over the Rockies.

And for those enthusiasts who love to revel into the evening, the kitchen and the full bar are open

late night. Whether you’re only in town for a few days or for the en-tire summer, make sure you put this restaurant on your “must” visit list!

*gemütlich is German for “cozy” and con-notes the notion of belonging, cheerful-ness, the absence of anything hectic and the opportunity to spend quality time.

10 WINE & DINE IN Aspen

For 17 years, two Louisiana gentlemen turned Aspen entrepreneurs — Kevin

Jones and Earl Rodgers — have been baking and serving pies at New York Pizza. And the continu-ing popularity of this downtown/upstairs pizza shop on the Hyman Avenue Mall is the best indicator of Jones’ and Rodgers’ success.

Open until 2:30 a.m., New York Pizza is a favorite stop for Aspen night owls and an essential part of the town’s overall dining land-scape. And now they’re taking their perfect Greenwich-style pies and red-and-white checkered table-cloths down valley — to Orchard Plaza, next to the City Market in El Jebel. Sitting two doors from El Jebeverage liquor store and three doors from City Market, New York Pizza has one of the most conve-nient spots in the mid-valley, per-fectly situated for customers who want to dine in or take out.

Each NYP location now has its own personality. The Aspen shop is

New York Pizzadefi ned by the hardcore local folks behind the counter and the ski and rock ‘n’ roll posters on the walls; down valley, Rodgers and Jones are going for a more family-ori-ented feel, with more space, more upscale decor and more traditional operating hours. There is a sit-down bar with beer and wine, and additional menu items including wings, fries and dessert breads.

Of course, the pizza is the true bottom line, and that’s the same in both locations: fat, glistening with oil, served by the slice or whole pie. It’s a pizza to satisfy the true pizza lover — not thin, not too thick, with veggies, pepperoni, sausage and a variety of cheeses

available as toppings. The menu is rounded out with fresh salads — their version of the Greek salad is outstanding — and excellent sub sandwiches.

The atmosphere in both shops is timeless and unpretentious. In Aspen, four TVs are always tuned to sports, and no one will mind if you actually root for your team of choice. The walls refl ect a distinct fl avor of local Aspen; checking out the posters and pictures is an excellent way to soak in Aspen his-tory while waiting for your pizza.

Many pizza-lovers prefer their pie at home, with a movie or a ball game on the television. And both New York Pizza locations cater to those folks by offering free delivery from 5 to 9 p.m.

Poppycocks has been serving up healthy, hearty breakfasts and lunches in Aspen for

nearly 40 years. Just steps from the gondola, it’s the perfect spot to fuel up before a day on the slopes or to take a break for lunch. Start the day with Poppycocks’ famous oatmeal or corn griddle pancakes, so popular the restaurant started selling the mix. Or fi ll up with spe-cialty crêpes or French toast grilled, not fried, to make it healthier. The Eggs Benedict’s hollandaise sauce is concocted daily from scratch, as is the addictive green chili that tops Poppycocks’ Huevos Ranche-ros. Fresh veggie salsa rounds out the Avocado eggs, poached and served with cheese on an English muffi n. Or you can build your own

La Palapa

Located two blocks from the Gondola in the heart of downtown Aspen you’ll

discover La Palapa, Aspen’s newest authentic Mexican restaurant.

Their menu has all the classicMexican dishes but they have become famous for their sizzling steak fajitas. The lingering aroma will leave your mouth-watering.

To really experience the taste of Mexico you should start with a fresh ceviche, seafood cocktail, or made to order guacamole. Or one could order an authentic dish; the Molcajete de Mariscos, a steaming hot seafood stew served in a lava rock bowl, overfl owing with crab legs, shrimp, octopus and more. Or try something completely different, the Piña Rellena, a grilled half pineapple stuffed with seafood in a creamy sauce.

And of course no Mexican meal would be complete without a margarita made with fresh squeezed lime juice or an ice cold Dos Equis from the tap.
