BEST ARIZONA WINERIES: THE PERFECT PLACE TO WINE & DINE

Arizona is the sixth largest state in the United States and is famously known for its wineries. Bordered by Mexico, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and California, this is the state that is stood for its scorching summers and mild winters.

This extreme climate makes it one of the most suitable places in the world for wine yard cultivation and brewing. Arizona is also home to the wonderful Grand Canyon, the Cathedral Rock and the Barringer Meteorite Crater.

Viticulture: the art of Grapes & Wines

The origin and advent of viticulture, i.e. production of grapes in Arizona can be traced back to the 16th century. The team of viticulturist is closely associated with the winemakers to aid in monitoring the crops for insects and pests, best irrigation practices, crop management, seasonal variations, reaping and sowing, etc.

They also guide as to which the best time to sow and to reap. Climate is foremost the most important factor that helps in improving the quality of the crop and hence the wine. Summers are ideal for ripening of the fruit and winters serve as a relative relaxing phase for the growth of grapes.

Process of Winemaking

As amazing as the wine tastes, equally interesting is the process of wine making. The science of winemaking is known as Oenology, and a winemaker is known as a Vintner. Winemaking is of two basic types:

Still Wine Production- This does not involve carbonation and the wine thus produced is practically free of any contents of carbon.

Sparkling Wine Production- This kind of wine is produced with carbonation, using injections or natural processes.

The process of wine making comprises of a series of steps. The first one is harvesting. The grapes can either be picked mechanically or by hand, depending on the area of the vineyard and duration of time available for plucking the grapes.

After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed, crushed and are taken for primary fermentation. The stems are separated from the berries, which are then gently pressed to remove the extract from inside the peel of the grapes. The process of primary fermentation is carried out by using cultured yeast.

The product thus obtained undergoes pressing that separates the wine from the grape skin and whatever extracts are remaining. During the entire process, tartrate crystals are produced in the wine that may appear as sand crystals.

And thus the process of cold stabilization is carried out to remove these from the wine. Slow process of secondary fermentation and ageing is made before the final step of blending and fining.
