Year 12 Geography Field Trip
From 3 to 6 May, the A-Level Geography students travelled to Slapton, in Devon, to undertake fieldwork for our independent investigation. On our first day, we travelled to Slapton Ley Field Centre; setting off at 7:45am from Windsor Girls’ School. When we arrived at the centre, we met in one of the labs with our guide, Gareth, who introduced us to the coasts aspect of the field work. We then went to Slapton Sands, Beesands and Torcross to undertake fieldwork. We were fortunate enough to take advantage of the cafes and enjoyed an ice-cream as we explored the beaches. We were given the

Dear Parents and Carers I hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend. Year 11 begin their first written examinations on Monday 14 May and, to recognise this, students have been issued with ‘Banana’ Schedules to support them throughout the examination period. Lessons will continue throughout the next term, with additional sessions scheduled close to the actual examination. The term ‘Banana’ Schedule is used as, during this final session, students are encouraged to drink some water and to eat a healthy snack. We provide bananas to give students some slow release energy in the examination room. Last week, our Sixth Form geographers went on their fieldtrip to Slapton, Devon. They were very lucky with the weather, which allowed them to collect their data and to undertake the necessary activities. You can read about it later in this week’s newsletter. This weekend, Year 9 Year Ambassadors will be taking part in a PGL trip at Marchant’s Hill, which aims to develop teamwork and leadership skills. Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh participants will be completing their Bronze practice weekend. As the weather improves, students are reminded that the optional part of the uniform is the school jumper. Also, with more students enjoying the outside space during their break times, we request that they take responsibility for their litter. This will help everyone to continue to benefit from the pleasant environment. It has been a pleasure to meet with Year 12 applicants for Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl and Student Leaders positions. Students shared a range of interesting ideas and suggestions during their interviews and presentations, and we will be looking to implement some of them in the next year. I am pleased to announce that the senior team for the next year are as follows:
Head Girl Hetty Brake Deputy Head Girl Clemmie Oliver Senior Student Leaders Iona MacRobert Mary Deakes Isabelle Jackson-Brench Grace Asquith-Evans
I am sure you will join me in congratulating them and the wider team of Student Leaders. We look forward to working with them in the next year. Mrs G Labrum

Higher level apprenticeships allow students to gain a degree level qualification whilst earning.
Geography Field Trip opportunity to conduct fieldwork – we measured the width of the various sections of beach using a tape measure and used a clinometer to measure the changes in angle as we went down the beach. Gareth explained to us how we could calculate the economic value of the area. Through setting a monetary value on small houses, large houses and businesses, we were able to easily calculate how much each area was worth, by counting the number of small and big houses ,as well as businesses. We then went back to the centre and spent the rest of the evening learning more about the area. On our second day, we went on a day trip to Plymouth. Our A-Level course allows us to undertake a project on a human or physical topic. Whilst in Plymouth, we visited various places – the town centre (including Drake Circus and Frankfort Gate) and the Barbican. The Centre had lent us iPads, which allowed us to take advantage of the GPS feature; we undertook various fieldwork methods and then recorded the data onto our iPads, based on our location. The methods we used included pedestrian counting and an environmental quality
survey; we had to think of how we felt at each location. When we went back to the Centre, we were able to take advantage of the time in the evening to think of our plan for the next day. The choice was between coasts or regeneration. Those opting for coasts would go back to one or more locations visited on the first day, while those opting for regeneration would return to Plymouth. We spent the rest of the evening formulating our own question and devising various fieldwork methods we could undertake. I elected to focus on regeneration. My question focused on whether regeneration was successful in Drake Circus and Frankfort Gate. Throughout the day, my group and I used various fieldwork techniques: a pedestrian count; counting the number of cars which passed by a certain point; taking pictures; a questionnaire about what residents think about Plymouth; and a shopping survey. Once back, we were able to either evaluate our data or find secondary resources related to our findings. On our last day, Gareth taught us various techniques, including how to use Google Earth and how we could present our data in a way which would be more sophisticated. We then went through statistical tests. In order to obtain high marks, we needed to understand how we could analyse and evaluate our data, for instance through chi-
squared tests, Mann-Whitney tests, etc. We then went through the various methods of presenting data, other than simple bar graphs. Finally, we had lunch at the Centre and then headed back to the school. Overall, the trip was a fantastic experience and I have learnt a lot of valuable skills which I will be able to apply to my coursework. For those thinking about doing Geography A-Level, the trip is a great opportunity to apply everything you learn in the classroom to the real world, whilst the project can be written on anything you wish from coasts or regeneration, allowing greater independence. Holocaust Ambassadors
Two of our Sixth Form students, Navleen Bhachu and Ishika Sabharwal, have been part of a programme organised by the Holocaust Education Trust and have completed the final part of their studies which will enable them to become lifelong Holocaust Ambassadors. Navleen and Ishika have taken part in orientation seminars in London, met with Holocaust Survivors, visited Auschwitz and have now shared their experiences with the Big Questions club and with Years 9 and 10 in an assembly this week. Both students have been outstanding ambassadors for WGS during their training, and we send them congratulations on achieving their accreditation. ‘When Mrs Jenkins mentioned the opportunity for two students to participate in a course, which would result in becoming lifelong Holocaust Ambassadors, Navleen and I couldn't wait to get started. We have been so very fortunate to meet survivors of the Holocaust and hear their incredible stories. Visiting Auschwitz was a once in a lifetime trip that we learnt a great deal from and felt extremely lucky to have gone. We came back better informed about the tragic incident that was the Holocaust, the millions that were affected and how anti-Semitism still happens today. We are committed to our role as ambassadors and will continue to tell the stories of the Holocaust victims and carry their torch.’ - Ishika Sabharwal, Year 12

Hannah Liddell Congratulations to Hannah Liddell (Year 9), who, as an active member of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets in Windsor, has been selected to attend RIAT 2018 (Royal International Aerospace Tattoo) at RAF Fairford, in July. This year’s show will be particularly special as it is marking the centenary of the RAF. Hannah has been chosen from Cadets from across Thames Valley Wing to be part of an official RAF Cadet Camp. She will have the opportunity to learn about STEM careers in the RAF and to develop key personal and team skills. Hannah, who has been an RAF Air Cadet for a little over a year, has recently been awarded her first BTEC for Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship. She has also attended a Tactical Leadership Course and passed her St John’s Ambulance First Aid training. She was chosen by the Wing to read in church for the Windsor RAF100 Parade last month, in front of over 800 Cadets, Staff, RAF Personnel and members of the public. We also wish Hannah well as she takes to the skies this weekend, after passing her flying theory exams a few weeks ago.
