The Eucharist is the very center of our faith life.
And our symbol-starved culture craves what we
have. Many people have testified that they were
drawn to the Catholic Church because of the Eucha-
rist. This simple rite of bread and wine enshrines a
sacred mystery that speaks powerfully not only to
Christians but to everyone. After all, it takes one of
the most basic and universal human actions—a
common meal—and finds in it the presence of a lov-
ing God who gives himself to us as food and drink.
We hear of the good old days when they mystery of
the Mass was so palpable. But even celebrated in
our own language, with simplicity and reverence,
that same unspeakable mystery shines forth. We
gather together weekly, some of us daily, at this
common table. Yes it is a meal, but it is more than
that. It speaks to us of the mystery at the heart of
all human meals: of community, of love, and of sac-
rifice (for the food we eat was once alive). Let us be
eager to invite many guests to our table. Let every-
one come to this table, which proclaims Christ’s love
for us to the point of sacrificing himself for our sake.
Y nuestra cultura hambrienta de símbolos an-
Pero in-
cluso celebrado en nuestro propio idioma, con
simplicidad y reverencia, ese mismo misterio
indescriptible brilla.
comemos estuvo viva alguna vez). Tengamos
ganas de invitar a muchos invitados a nuestra
mesa.

About Our Patron Saint—Benedict the Moor
The sacred relic, still incorrupt
but a little dry and hard, is ex-
posed for public veneration. The
face of the Saint was covered
sometime ago with a thin wax
mask. Thus God blessed the vir-
tues of the former slave with the
gift of incorruptibility, which
blessing has endured for almost
four hundred years.
St. Benedict the Black has been proclaimed the
“Patron of all Negro Missions in North America.”
do durante casi cuatrocientos años.
The Catholic Doctrine of the Real Presence
By this expression is meant that the true Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Christ are really and substantially present under the Eucharistic species, that is, the appearances of bread and wine which remain on the altar after the Consecration. But when the Church says that the glorified Jesus is really pre-sent in the Holy Eucharist, she is talking about a different and very special kind of presence. She means that, by the almighty power of God, a stupendous miracle has taken place, namely, the substance and reality of bread and wine have been changed into the substance and reality of the Body and Blood of the resurrect-ed Jesus Christ who is now seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. Therefore, since Jesus Christ is God and God is wor-thy of adoration, it follows that the Lord, truly present under the appearances of bread and wine, is worthy of adoration in the Ho-ly Eucharist. For this reason the Church surrounds the Mass and the Eucharist with various gestures of adoration, such as in-cense, bows, genuflections, silence, candles, formal liturgical clothing and so forth.
The Real Presence of Jesus Christ
mo incienso, lazos, genuflexiones, silencio, velas, ropa
litúrgica formal, etc.
