Welcome to our Parish Saint Benedict the Moor Bienvenidos a nuestra parroquia San Benito el moro Rectory and Parish 1625 E. 12th St. Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 Phone: 336-725-9200 Fax: 336-397-0898 August 25, 2019 Today’s Readings Isaiah 66:18-21 Psalm 117:1, 2 (R/. Mark 16:15) Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Luke 13:22-30 Pastor, Fr. Henry A. Tutuwan (980)616-6676 [email protected] Lectura, as de Hoy Isaias 66:18-21 Salmo 116:1, 2 (R/. Marcos 16:15) Hebreos 12:5-7, 11-13 Lucas 13:22-30 The second reading and gospel may be read as a call to discipline, not exactly a contemporary value. We want everything now and without effort. Yet disci- pline is necessary for growth. Without discipline the artist does not develop craft. Without discipline we do not mature spiritually. We cannot acquire wis- dom by reading a book or listening to a homily. Un- less we do the hard work of praying and being shaped, we are not converted. Yet we want to rescue the notion of discipline from the obsolete and abusive childrearing metaphor used by the author of Hebrews. We now know that “spare the rod and spoil the child” will not help a child grow. But what of the hardships that come into our own life? Do we see them as a possibility for disci- pline and for our growth? Or do we try to avoid them, narcotize ourselves against them, pray that they will go away? We are being molded by God. Everything that happens to us is God’s will to aid our transformation. We are engaged in a dangerous work, and Jesus’ admonitions address not outsiders but his own people—ourselves. We have been cho- sen for an awesome task. More will be expected of us because more has been given us, both as Chris- tians and as Americans. If we do not take this com- mission seriously, if we do not accept discipline and allow ourselves to be converted so that we shine with the gospel, we risk being left behind while others to whom this wondrous opportunity has not been given enter the kingdom before us. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lectura, as de Hoy Isaias 66:18-21

Salmo 116:1, 2 (R/. Marcos 16:15) Hebreos 12:5-7, 11-13

Lucas 13:22-30

The second reading and gospel may be read as a call

to discipline, not exactly a contemporary value. We

want everything now and without effort. Yet disci-

pline is necessary for growth. Without discipline the

artist does not develop craft. Without discipline we

do not mature spiritually. We cannot acquire wis-

dom by reading a book or listening to a homily. Un-

less we do the hard work of praying and being

shaped, we are not converted.

Yet we want to rescue the notion of discipline from

the obsolete and abusive childrearing metaphor used

by the author of Hebrews. We now know that “spare

the rod and spoil the child” will not help a child

grow. But what of the hardships that come into our

own life? Do we see them as a possibility for disci-

pline and for our growth? Or do we try to avoid

them, narcotize ourselves against them, pray that

they will go away? We are being molded by God.

Everything that happens to us is God’s will to aid

our transformation. We are engaged in a dangerous

work, and Jesus’ admonitions address not outsiders

but his own people—ourselves. We have been cho-

sen for an awesome task. More will be expected of

us because more has been given us, both as Chris-

tians and as Americans. If we do not take this com-

mission seriously, if we do not accept discipline and

allow ourselves to be converted so that we shine with

the gospel, we risk being left behind while others to

whom this wondrous opportunity has not been given

enter the kingdom before us.

espiritualmente.

No podemos adquirir sabiduría leyendo un libro o escuchan-

do una homilía.

St. Monica of Hippo

Patroness of Difficult mar-riages; disappointing chil-dren; victims of adultery or unfaithfulness; victims of (verbal) abuse; and conver-sion of relatives. The Catholic Church cele-

brates St. Monica on August 27.

The theme for the 15th Eucharistic Congress of the Diocese of Charlotte has been announced by Bishop Peter Jugis:

“Stay With Us, Lord.

”The Holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation … The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that

communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being.

The origins of the Eucharist are found in the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his Apostles. “In order to leave them a pledge of this love, in order never to depart from his own and to make them sharers in his Passover, he instituted the

Eucharist as the memorial of his death and Resurrection and commanded his apostles to celebrate it until his return; ‘thereby he constituted them priests of the New Testa-

ment’” (ccc.no 1337)

The 2019 theme is taken from the Gospel book of Luke (24:29), telling of two dejected disciples leaving Jerusalem

after Christ was crucified and died.

At www.goeucharist.com: Get information about the up-coming Eucharistic Congress, in English and Spanish

Thank you to those who represented us. This year we hope more people will be there to join the Bishop and the Church in the Diocese of Charlotte to celebrate and pray adoring Jesus Christ physically present in the Eucharist.

Mission Appeal

Fr. Anthanatius from Cameroon will be here on Sunday, September 1st to do mission appeal for the Catholic Uni-versity of Bamenda. It is one of the areas ravaged by the war in Cameroon. Please let us be generous with the se-cond collection as usual which will be of great help to many of the displaced students and families. Thank you for your constant support to mission countries. May God reward you all.
