Who do you say that I am? Evangelization tries to an-
swer this question. Who is Jesus for us? It will not do
us any good merely to echo Peter’s response: You are
the Christ. Everyone knows this today, but for most
people “the Christ” is at best the last name of Jesus or
at worst an empty phrase. We must find our own an-
swer for ourselves and for our age. What does Jesus
mean to you? Who is he for you? Who is he for our
community?
An answer to this question is not the end of evangeli-
zation but merely an invitation. Words and names can
only point to the reality of God. God is beyond all
words and concepts. We wish to help people enter into
the wonder of Saint Paul in the second reading. Evan-
gelization should help people to experience for them-
selves the glory of God. Then they in turn can answer
for themselves, “Who do you say that I am?

St. Bartholomew, Apostle
St. Bartholomew, Apostle
St. Bartholomew, a doctor in the Jewish law, was a dear friend of St. Philip the Apostle. Because
Bartholomew was a man "in whom there was no guile," his mind was open to the truth. He went
willingly with Philip to see Christ, and recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God. After
having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Mi-
nor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. In the latter country, while preaching to idolaters,
he was arrested and condemned to death. His Feast Day is celebrated on August 24.
