The second reading and the gospel present two key themes of the good news we have to offer one another and our neighbors. At the end of the Book of Revelation Jesus says, “Behold, I make all things new.” This is a powerful message for our day when things seem to be disintegrating and fall-ing apart. We live in times of confusion, of ram-pant violence and crime, of deteriorating values. In many ways our situation is not much different from the Roman Empire in John’s time. The differ-ence is that then the Christian community was only a small group of people. But in spite of the evident decay and rot, Christ brings a message of hope. In Christ all is made new. Rather than decrying our failing society, how might we Christians help to make things new and bring this message of hope to people today? The gospel provides the second great theme of evangelization. Beyond all the words we utter or the arguments we might use to convince people of the truth of the gospel, the way we live our lives is by far the best means. If people see us as an ac-cepting, inviting, and loving community they will be drawn toward us. Indeed the experience of warmth in a Christian community overcomes a multitude of objections or doubts people may have about various aspects of the church. They experi-ence the love of Jesus alive in us and know they have come home.
