Year in Review – President’s Address

The year just past has been an exciting one. We’ve increased land protection, enhanced stewardship and assessed our progress. The Conservancy is committed to protecting our watershed and preserving our history at Walloon Lake, and we have reason to

celebrate our achievements and anticipate the coming opportunities.

In 2014, we reached a milestone of 2,000 acres of land protected through conservation easements or as preserves. These protected lands preserve what is special about Walloon Lake and help keep our waters cool, clear and inviting. We are working on opportunities to share the wonders of some of these lands through outreach activities.

With the retirement of Betsy Lieberman, the Conservancy has hired a new Executive Director, Christine Wedge, who will lead us into the next phase of our growth. Christine is eager to meet our friends and donors, and I know you will enjoy getting to know her.

In October, the Conservancy’s Trustees and staff identified key communication priorities. We explored ways we define our community, what we’re doing to engage with our community, and how we can better reach you. Look for new outreach activities and efforts as we go forward.

We’ve been fortunate to work with respected partners in 2014, guiding our efforts and providing financial support. We appreciate the insights of the Little Traverse Conservancy and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council into our outreach goals, and financial support from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation and the Heart of the Lakes Center for Land Conservation.

Throughout 2014, the Conservancy took time to think deeply and critically about the impact of our work, and we look forward to working with you to create the stories we tell about the special lands and waters that make life great around Walloon Lake.

Welcome Christine WedgeTHE CONSERVANCY’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Boards of the Conservancy and the Walloon Lake Association formed a Succession Planning Committee in the fall of 2014. The goal was to find a candidate with strong leadership and communications skills, and we are confident you will agree that we found just the right candidate. Christine Wedge came on board in April of 2015. She is eager to meet with stakeholders in our community to enhance her understanding of the vision for our work. Special thanks are due to our dedicated and hard-working Succession Planning Committee of Rick Gross, John Clark, Irma Noel, Russ Kittleson and Al Damschroder-job well done!

Community Conversations

Page 5: Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy 2014 Annual Report

As I write my last column for the Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy Annual Report, I am sitting in the upstairs level of my “vacation” home in Bruce Mines, Ontario, Canada. The day is cool, windy and rainy... but the beauty of the scenery through the deck slider is undiminished.

During this 5 day trip, I have seen sand hill cranes, an American bittern, Canada geese, deer, a wild hen turkey, raccoons, squirrels, numerous song birds, woodpeckers, coyote, and one lone black bear... all in my back yard. In March, I sipped my morning coffee as two yearling moose slipped through the edge of my woods.

I am so blessed to live, work and play in an area where Mother Nature provides a live show of such beauty and wonder.

Beyond my immediate sight are more open meadows, extensive forests, rock cliffs, beaver floodings, ponds, streams and trails.

Many times I have contemplated how different this land would be if roads were developed and homes were built. And it becomes abundantly clear why the Conservancy is so important. Through its work, you have the assurance that your “back yard” will be protected, bringing Mother Nature into your lives and into the

lives of your loved ones for generations to come.

Because of the Conservancy, and the generosity of its many supporters, the legacy of open fields, forests, streams, birds

and animals will live on in perpetuity.

So instead of saying good-by, I’ll take this opportunity to say thank you - for all you’ve done, and for all you will do in the years to come. Your commitment to the Conservancy will ensure that the land in the Walloon Lake watershed is always available for you to enjoy - visually, physically and spiritually.

The Conservancy acquired a 30-acre addition to the Frog Hollow Preserve

This property was owned by Anna Kent, whose family has many fond memories of

tromping through the woodlands and wetlands here. Anna’s niece, Jeannie Massey, worked diligently to sell this land in a way that would represent the family legacy and protect the watershed. This preserve addition increases protection of the South Arm (Fineout) Creek, contributing to increased water quality and important fish and wildlife habitat.

Land Protection HighlightsThe newly protected lands of the Kent Family addition to our Frog Hollow Preserve are upstream of five Conservancy preserves and other valuable wetlands that filter water on its way through South Arm Creek and into Walloon Lake, keeping it clean, cool and clear. With the addition of this parcel, we reached a conservation milestone:

Helen Nash, stewardship volunteer for Schoof’s Creek Monitoring

The Conservancy now protects 2,000 acres in nature preserves and conservation easements within the Walloon Lake watershed.

Stewardship

Page 9: Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy 2014 Annual Report

The Conservancy’s 2012 assessment of the ecological value of individual properties focused on five of the watershed’s largest wetland complexes and associated inlet tributaries. It forms the basis for the Conservancy’s Strategic Conservation Plan.

Our Strategic Conservation Plan has been added to the overall Little Traverse Bay Watershed Protection Plan. This addition opens the door to funding opportunities for future projects. Conservancy and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council staff discussed the details of the parcel analysis and the resulting Conservation Plan with officials from Resort, Melrose and Bay Townships, and hope to continue to work closely with local governments on the protection of sensitive parcels within the Walloon Lake watershed.

Conservancy staff worked closely with officials in Resort Township this year to evaluate a Farmland and Open Space Preservation Ordinance proposal received in 2013. This unique ordinance provides support and funding for conservation easements to protect lands, allowing landowners to make significant investments in their land – usually working lands – and protect important landscapes at the same time. While an agreement was not reached with the landowner in 2014, the Conservancy will continue to work with Township officials in support of this program.

From the Treasurer, Matt FrentzThe Walloon Lake Trust and Conservancy’s 2014 fiscal year ended on solid footing, with additional dollars to use to accomplish our mission. Some of the financial highlights include:

• The Guardian Fund Annual Campaign raised $142,587 to support priority activities in the watershed and in the lake. This is a marked increase from 2013, and we thank our current and new donors for their support.

• The Board of Trustees established the Lieberman Stewardship Fund, in honor of Elizabeth Lieberman’s many years of dedicated service to the organization. This fund will be used for care and maintenance of our nearly 1300 acres in preserves.

We also received special project funding from community partners, including the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Heart of the Lakes, and in-kind donations from Maureen Parker of Common Ground Landscapes, Frog Hollow Farm, the Salesforce Foundation, and ESRI. Support like this makes our research project money go further, field work more efficient, and outreach efforts possible.

The financial information on this page is un-audited. A reviewed financial statement will be available at the Conservancy’s office upon completion by our accounting firm, Bunker, Clark, Winnell, and Nuorala, P.C.
