Lake Geneva, on the Illinois-Wisconsin border, is about 1 1/2 hours from Chicago and an hour from Milwaukee. This lovely area has been a favored resort for summer refugees from both cities for a century, and its lakeside mansions bear some famous names: Schwinn,Wrigley,Armour. And if all this up-north serenity is too tame for your tastes, the big-city diversions of Milwaukee and Chicago are only an hour or two away, and our faculty will happily supply you with restaurant and entertainment suggestions. Dear Walloon Alumni and Friends, As you can see from our latest flyers and website pages, the Walloon Institute is refining its focus in upcoming programming. In 2005 and beyond, you'll see a stronger emphasis on reading and writing, up through the grades and across the curriculum. We'll offer a smaller number of course titles, but with more choices, speakers, and hands-on workshops within those vital topics. And we’ve developed a new Institute schedule built around key literacy structures (like writing workshop, literature circles, writing across the curriculum, and reading workshop) that devotes a full day to each of these “best practices.” Since we began in 1989,Walloon has always been about growing lifelong readers and writers. We’ve had strands on reading, writing and curriculum development in all 27 programs that we've run over 15 years. But more recently, we added courses on school reform, high school restructuring, school district leadership, and related topics. While we're proud to have served in those areas, and treasure the people we’ve met while doing that work, we are happily returning to our original mission. Our 4,500 alumni keep reminding us that Walloon provides a unique and powerful kind of professional development in K–12 literacy that no other program quite matches. And our veteran faculty is eager to do what they do best—helping you help your students to fall in love with books, writing, inquiry, and the power of words. I hope this sounds as good to you as it does to us. See you soon at the new/old Walloon! Reading Into Writing Morning Keynote Featuring Shelley HarwayneTeachers know Shelley Harwayne from her deeply practical books like Lasting Impressions, Lifetime Guarantees and Going Public. But notall of her colleagues realize that Shelley was also the founding principal ofthe Manhattan New School, now one of the nation’s most celebratedschools, and that she went on to become a superintendent in the NewYork City school system, and for years led the city’s most progressive district. So Shelley can uniquely speak about reading and writing fromevery perspective: classroom teacher, principal, author, administrator, and literacy leader. For our opening day, Shelly will help us look at some urgent questions in literacy instruction today, from K to12 andacross the curriculum. What is a “balanced” reading program? How doskillful teachers help students to connect their reading lives with theirown writing? How do we help struggling readers succeed? How do wecope with tests, standards, and mandates that intrude on our classrooms? And how do we keep growing as readers and writers ourselves?
