As soon as new teacher Agnes entered Jack and Jill Early Learning Centre she knew that was exactly where she wanted to kick-off her teaching career.

The Stokes Valley resident started at the centre last month after fi nishing her studies at Massey University in Palmerston North.

Agnes, who works with the toddlers at Jack and Jill, says working with young children has always been a passion of hers.

“I believe in high quality teaching for them and that starts when they’re really young,” she says.

Agnes says she is always learning new things when working with the children of jack and Jill and she loves being part of the Wainuiomata community.

Wainuiomata holds water festivalBy Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata had a wet and wonderful day on Saturday as the valley held its fi rst annual water festival.

A constant fl ow of people attended the festival, seeing demonstrations and having water fi ghts throughout the day.

The event was held at Queen Street reserve and a great time was had by those attending.

“It’s a great way to end summer, a re-ally fun day,” says Andy Stevens, who attended the festival with her family.

“The kids are getting a nice cool down on this really hot day.”

In the middle of the reserve was a pool of water that had a continuous fl ow of people walking over to fi ll up their water guns and bottles.

There were also musical performances by various artists from Wainuiomata and over the Hutt Valley.

The Wainuiomata Rural Fire Force also put on a demonstration demonstrating the power of water.

Using a platform with hoses put through it, they lifted various objects up, eventu-ally lifting up a person on top of the platform.

This amazed the crowd who stopped everything they were doing to watch the amazing show put on by the force.

“That was incredible, I didn’t expect to see that,” says Geoff Makaria.

There were also stalls inside the War Memorial Hall, with local people and artists showing and selling items to the public.

Also included in the day’s activities were multiple sports and games including Ki o Rahi, T Ball and Cricket.

There was also a water costume contest where entrants created their own costume.

These included a storm water taniwha and a mermaid among others.

UP AND AWAY: Rocket girl takes o using the power of water.

Continued from page 1Bruce says the tattoo with ‘Least we

forget’ inked onto his chest means a lot to him, as it does to so many others.

“It was just out of respect. I always said I was going to get another tattoo but I didn’t know what it was going to be,” Bruce says.

“I really hope it has brought Australia and New Zealand together, highlight-ing Gallipoli and how we stood up and fought,” he says.

The tattoo holds a special place over Bruce’s heart, with a great uncle involved in the war.

Bruce was inked at the Petone tattoo parlour, Pieces of Eight, and since the weekend the parlour has had people requesting the tattoo from countries such as the UK, Australia, Ireland, and even Russia.

“I didn’t expect it to get so much atten-tion. It’s crazy… It’s just unbelievable how it was picked up. Obviously it struck a chord with people,” he says.

Friends and family of the Wainuiomata

man have all jumped on board and sup-ported Bruce with his decision, and believe it is amazing how it has become a design known around the world.

Tattoo artist Derek Thunders is stunned at the popularity of his work, and says when Bruce fi rst brought the design into him, he thought it was no more than a neat idea that would ink well and look clean.

“I didn’t think it was anything out of the ordinary. The feedback has been pretty awesome and unexpected,” the apprentice of three years says.

The tattoo was done on Thursday last week and by Sunday it had received over 129,000 on Facebook.

Bruce is a leader in the Wainuiomata Parish Scout Group, and says they often have sleepovers near to Anzac Day, where an Anzac related speaker attends.

“Let’s hope it helps to remind and teach the next generation about respect because it seems to be a lost generation...We need to remember the men and women, people’s brothers and sisters, who fought for their countries,” he says.

RESPECT: Bruce Neal says the tattoo is out of respect for his country.

Two Wainuiomata parents are doing eve-rything they can to help their daughter have a better future.

Melanie and Nathan Gardiner are setting goals so that their daughter can get over to the United States for a surgery that will change her life for the better.

Mila has had a rough start to life to say the least, her identical twin died in the womb, and she was found to not be reaching her milestones once she was getting older.

It was at this point where she was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy.

“We lost her sister Alyssia three weeks before Mila was born,” says Nathan.

“In November we got the early diagnosis that brain damage was caused when Alyssia passed.”

The brain damage is situated in the back of Mila’s head.

Cerebral Palsy causes Mila’s body to stiffen when she gets exited, she cannot suck her thumb or sit unaided, and even her eating is affected.

“When she is eating something that tastes good, her tounged stiffens up so she spits out the food,” says Melanie.

After a lot of nights worrying about how they can help their daughter, Melanie found out about the surgery that could make thing so much better for Mila.

A surgery called selective dorsal rhitzotomy, which is available in the United States, has been proven to help give children that suffer with Cerebral Palsy gain independence in life.

“Children have shown amazing improve-ments after having the surgery,” says Melanie.

They need to raise $100,000 to cover the entire trip including the surgery, the fl ights and accommodation.

Mila needs your help

The operation itself costs $68,000 to complete.

“We see how hard it is for her, she wants to play, this is why we are putting our whole heart into fundraising for this,” Melanie says.

“It’s probably the greatest thing we can do in life for her.”

The family has set up a give a little page for Mila www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/pleasehelpmila and are already amazed by the response.

“We set up the site about two weeks ago, and it has gone crazy,” says Melanie.

“It’s really nice, and really uplifting,” Nathan says.

Wainuiomata is joining the rest of the country by trying to make 5000 poppies to help remem-ber those that passed away in the world wars.

These poppies are being knitted all around the country in a drive to remember the Anzacs on the 100 year anniversary of Gallipoli.

Ann Pibal is one of these people involved and says that she wants as many people involved

that can take part.“They are easy to make and there are

instructions on how to do them in the library,” she says.

The drive started before Christmas and Ann says that lots of people around the country are taking part.

In Wainuiomata there are currently 38 poppies completed, these are on display at the library, which has also displayed various

books on the Anzacs.“It doesn’t take long to knit one, a good

knitter would be able to get through one in an evening,” says Ann.

“Once they are done people can drop them into the library, whoever wants to can get involved,” she says.

The poppies will then be taken up to Waiouru where they will be displayed in the National War Museum.

The Wainuiomata Library has a Justice of the Peace available for the public every Thursday from 1pm-2pm.Members of the Hutt Valley JP associa-tion have a JP available at various times at all of the Hutt Valley Libraries. For more information about these services including session times please visit library.huttcity.govt.nz

Plunket's Annual 'Bear Hug' Appeal kicked off this week, and volunteers have been get-ting out and about to raise funds for local and regional services.

Fundraising efforts have been happening in a range of differ-ent ways – from Teddy Bear picnics where people can make a donation, to street collections

with mascot Big Blue.Plunket's free home and clin-

cic visits are government fund-ed, however they rely on com-munity fundrasing to provide

all other support services, such as playgroups, support groups, car seat services, parenting education programmes, and toy libraries.

New curriculum offered at Wainuiomata High School is giv-ing students the chance to work towards their future goals – via a new early childhood class which started three weeks ago.

This is the fi rst time the class has been offered at the school,

and 21 senior students are en-rolled and working towards a national certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Teacher Virginia Wilson was the driving force behind getting the programme up and running, and says it is a vocational path-way for the girls who have chosen to take charge of their future.

“Most girls who are taking the class want to be early childhood teachers or midwives, or work with young children”, she says.

The class, run four times a week, has a tutor visit twice a week to assess the course. The girls are also given hands-on opportunities, such as visiting Plunket, completing short-term

LIFE LESSONS: The new early childhood learning class, with Michaelle Carter, Waimarie Tupou, Jasmyn Strang, Ree Pereha, Melanie Harrison, Alana Bilby, Shannon Rivers, Haylee Anderson, teacher Virginia Wilson, Danielle Faifailoa, Melanie Cooper, Fayth Russell, Danielle Robbie, Bianca Ross, and Tasi Tialata.

New class a direct path to dreamsplacements, and having babies come into the classroom.

“The learning material is very grown up and catered to tertiary style learning. The girls love that,” says Virginia.

“It’s fl exible and self-pace, and the girls have a book of readings to work through.”

Fayth Russell chose to take the class due to her long-term goal of being a midwife.

She says her mother said it is amazing for the school to pro-vide Fayth with the opportunity to learn about children early on.

“I want to get a better under-standing of kids. It’s an amazing class – Mrs Wilson gets really involved with us and gives us time for one on one.”

Fellow classmate Ree Peneha says she wants to be an early childhood teacher and work in Te Kohanga Reo care.

“This class is the reason why I come to school. I want to get this qualifi cation so I can become what I want to be,” says Ree.

“This class can give me the direct pathway to where I want to be.”

Playcentres hold open weekBy Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata and Woodhatton Play cen-tres are holding an open week this week showcasing what play centres are all about.

Play centres all over the Hutt Valley are open for the public, for new parents to see how they can benefi t their child.

The open days are organised by Hutt City Play Centres and hap-pen every year right after children’s day.

Hannah Mitchell from Woodhatton Play Centre says that this week is used to promote play centre.

“It is used to promote what we do here and also show people about the adult education program that we run,” she says.

“I think people don’t really realise that play centre is there.”

Even though this is a publicity drive, Hannah says that play centres are always open to parents that want to come down and see what is happening.

“We like to show that we are another

option for pre school, we would love to have children all the way to school,”

Hannah says.“It is a fantastic way for parents to meet

each other, and all the children to know each other, it’s a home away from home for them.”

Vicky Johansen says that this is a good way to publicise what play centres do.

“We usually are publicised by word of mouth or on facebook,” she says.

“Once people come in they can see how it really works here.”

Wainuiomata in 2035

Last year many of you had your say on a vision for Wainuiomata in 2035. All that feedback has been put together, and it’s ready to be run past the community again to make sure it’s right.

There’s three ways to see the collective vision for Wainuiomata over the next 20 years and give feedback:

• Talk with members of the steering group and facilitators Boffa Miskell and give them your feedback on Thursday 5 March from 10am-7pm at the Wainuiomata Library.

• Visit the expo (this time it won’t be staffed) between Friday 6 March and Thursday 12 March at either the Wainuiomata Library or the Wainuiomata Mall.

• See the expo and give feedback online at www.huttcity.govt.nz/vibrant-wainuiomata

Vocational pathways

As you know, I am passionate about our young people reaching their full potential, and I believe one of the keys to this happening is offering a range of opportunities.

The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs, run by a really dedicated team at YOUth Inspire and based in Wainuiomata has had great successes with offering vocational pathways to young people, many of whom have become disengaged with education.

In the same area of creating vocational pathways and helping students transition from school to careers, a small group of Year 11 boys from Wainuiomata High School spent last year splitting their week between three days at secondary school and two days at the Wellington Trades Academy at WelTec. Twelve of the students achieved NCEA level 1 and almost all are continuing on with further study, which is a wonderful result.

By really building on these students’ strengths and interests, enabling them to consider their future and see how they can get there they’ve really focussed and put in the necessary work- they should feel rightfully proud of themselves.

Finally, thanks to all those who took people who the time to have their views known on the supercity debate. I hope the Local Government Commission listens.

As always, until next time if you would like to contact me please email [email protected] or phone Council on 570 6666.

Kind regards,

A word from Mayor Ray Wallace

Mayor - Lower HuttThe People’s Mayor

Dear Ed, Something needs to be done about the speed and craziness of the driving down the far end of Wellington Road.

I have lived on Wellington Road for nine years and I have seen much more than my fair share.

Last week our van parked on the road was written off by a young male doing burnouts. He lost control nearly hitting a lady driving with her two young children.

He was nice enough though to leave his bumper and number plate for the police as he took off.

Even as we were picking up the carnage of our van the next day a young male driver saw we had been affected by a speed hit and run, he continued to do 80 to 90 km past us as we yelled at him to slow down he had his hand out the window gesturing at us.

My neighbours and I are fearful

for our children who play at the park and walk home from school.

It is only a matter of time before one of us will be seriously affected.

What really gets to us is that we never get an apology or fi nd out if the driver got more than a slap on the hand.

Something seriously “needs” to be done before it’s too late to say something “should” have been done.

Sarah Yee

Only a matter of time before a fatalityDear Ed, I am always

thankful for our beautiful country and on Tuesday looking our to the West there was a beautiful sun-set and then also to the East.

Painters can paint lovely scenes but looking at na-ture and being thankful and watching those amaz-

ing scenes is so mightly. My husband and I of-

ten watch those things of natural beauty.

Everlastingly made and from the beginning of time certainly amazing grace for all of us to wit-ness or share and tell oth-ers.

Mrs E.R. Marchant

Feeling thankful

KEEP CALM AND CALL PAUL

I had a coffee with my mate Andrew at the Co-operative Bank last week, and he told me

about some very exciting news.

Firstly he said,

• KiwiSaver and Housing New Zealand can assist people

wanting to buy their first home.

• After being a member of KiwiSaver for three years or more

you can apply for a First Home Withdrawal from your KiwiSaver

account and you may be eligible for a First Home Subsidy from

Housing New Zealand.

I said that’s not new, he told me to keep listening...

On 1 April 2015, the current KiwiSaver First Home Deposit

Subsidy will be replaced with the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant.

• Like the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy, the KiwiSaver

HomeStart Grant will provide eligible first home buyers with a

grant of up to $5,000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for

couples to put towards a deposit for an existing home. In

addition, the new KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant will also provide

eligible first home buyers with a grant of up to $10,000 for

individuals and up to $20,000 for couples to help with the

costs of building or purchasing a brand new home.

Co-operative Bank’s Lower Hutt Branch Manager, Andrew Brown, believes these changes coupled with higher Welcome Home Loan and KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant house price limits will make buying a first home more achievable for many of his customers.

And I totally agree with him!

Now this means when April rolls around, there will be a good number of new cashed up first home buyers and buliders.

So if you are thinking of selling your home, or have a piece of land that is ready for a new build, you really need to pick up the phone and let me help you get ready to meet the market head on.

Or if you’re a buyer that needs some help, my advice is always the same,

“‘‘

Diabetes is on the increase in New Zealand. Over 200,000 New Zealanders have been diagnosed with diabetes and many more have diabetes but do not know it. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, with type 2 diabetes being the more common.

With diabetes there is too much glucose (a form of sugar) in your blood. This can lead to long term damage to your body, including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage and damage to your feet.

Symptoms can include feeling tired, feeling thirsty, going to the toilet often, getting infections frequently, infections that take a long time to heal, blurred vision, tingling and numbness in the feet and often feeling hungry. Symptoms sometimes go unnoticed as the disease develops very gradually.

People that are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in New Zealand include Maori and Pacifi c peoples, South Asian populations and people with a family history of diabetes.

Poor diet, sedentary lifestyles and increasing rates of obesity are major contributing factors. However over 50% of type 2 diabetes is preventable or at least can be delayed by a healthy diet, weight loss and physical activity. If you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, are overweight, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, then a general medical check-up is recommended. Earlier detection can lead to better control and management of the condition and an improved outcome.

Diabetes cannot be cured, but serious long term problems are less likely if you manage the condition well. “Along with medicines from your doctor, a healthy diet, getting plenty of physical exercise and losing weight is important “says Clive.

Here are some ideas to help you achieve your winter t-ness goals

1: Before and after photosIn our minds we can run that

10km marathon, or fit into those skinny jeans displayed in a fashion store window.

But in reality what we think we look like, may not be what the mirror refl ects.

So to kick start your winter fi tness goals, take a 'before' photo which you can look back at and see the difference your fi tness training is making.

It's also a great way to steer yourself away from the 'treats'. Keep your photo somewhere you can see it often, on the fridge, in your wallet or even in the car.

2: Goals BoardBy seeing your fi tness goals

in front of you every day you wake up, will keep you motivated by reminding you of what you need to do that day.

Place coloured notes on the bedroom mirror, the bathroom door, the fridge, kitchen table and even the dog kennel, re-minding you to walk the dog

or visit the gym that day.3: Keep a recordKeeping a record of time

spent exercising and any food you eat is another great way to keep tabs on your day to day activities.

Let's face it, many people can 'conveniently' forget cer-tain foods they eat, telling themselves; "I'll make up for it tomorrow."

By writing everything down you are reminding yourself of what you have done and hopefully motivate you to do some exercise.

4: Update music playlistMusic is something that mo-

tivates many people whether it be out walking, at the gym or at home. By updating your music regularly, it gives you something to look forward to and makes exercise more fun

5: Family challengeSet a family challenge so

everyone can help to motivate one another.

It can be to lose weight, to increase your fi tness or simply to enjoy some family time while out exercising.

Need fi tness motivation?

Cycling is excellent for tness and a family activity.

There are lots of good reasons to keep active – especially if you already have a medical condition, or you’re getting older.

Top ten reasons to stay active:• You’ll have more energy.• You’ll have better posture and balance.• You’ll have stronger muscles and bones.• It’s fun.• It raises your self-esteem.• It helps you manage your weight.• It improves your fi tness.• It can improve your sleep.• You’ll feel more relaxed, and less stressed!

Stay fi ghting fi tRegular physical activity:helps reduce

the risk of conditions like heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cancer.puts you in a better position manage conditions like arthritis, diabetes and depression.

Getting older? Now’s not the time to give up on stay-

ing active. When you’re in your senior years, it’s more important than ever to get up and get going!

Regular physical activity can do a lot to improve your quality of life. Keep reading to fi nd out how – and check out the HealthEd booklet Ageing Well if you want to know more.

Keeping fi t - keeping healthy

Swimming is a great way to keep t.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

SPORT

By Aaron Meredith

Rugby League in Wainuiomata is a major thing, most people in the valley have a NRL team, stay up late when State of Origin is on, and stand on the sidelines at Wise Park.

The History of League in our town is massive, multiple time national champions, multiple time Wellington Champions.

League and Wainuiomata are always going to be together, that is why the current scandal in the NRL will affect so many here.

The current drug scandal where various players, including some of the biggest names in the game, have been charged with supplying and possessing cocaine.

The Gold Coast Titans have been effected worst by this, and it all comes only one year on from another drug scandal that ripped the NRL apart.

Last year the Australian Sports Anti Doping Assosiation caught multiple NRL and AFL teams out on using performance enhancing drugs.

The Cronulla Sharks were by far the worst hit of all the sports teams in both codes that were linked to the bust.

This comes after a long list of players beating up partners, salary cap issues and other issues that have affected the game time and time again.

I know that Rugby League is a part of many peoples and families life, that’s fi ne.

But what about the example that these profes-sional sportsman are portraying to up and coming players.

Is it suddenly all right to cheat to win? Are drugs all right to take and sell? If your famous should you get away with plain and simply breaking the law?

Should NRL and all sports players for that matter be treated differently that the common criminal? We all should know the answer to that.

Scandals strike Rugby League … again

The Wainuiomata Hockey Club is holding a fundraiser garage sale on Saturday March 14.

The garage sale is being held at Pukeatua Kindergarten on Frederick Street and all the money is going towards the new turf.

If anyone in the Hockey Club has something they don’t want and can donate, please contact Ngaire to do this.

The Wainuiomata Hockey clubs turf was torn up after a heavy wind storm late last year, and the club is looking to raise money to get it fi xed.

Hockey Club Fundraiser

It was a generally successful week for the Wainuiomata Softball Club, with most teams gaining a positive result.

The Wainuiomata Pressies played two games on Saturday, winning both of them.

The fi rst game they defeated the Hutt Valley Dodgers by 8-7.

The followed this up by defeating the Steelers by 6-2.

The two results put Wainuiomata on third on the president’s grade one table on six points after fi ve games.

In the presidents grade two the Wainuiomata Natives drew seven all with Stokes Valley Yellow.

They still sit at the bottom of the ladder on three points, although equal with the two teams on top of them.

In the womens grade, Wainuiomata

continued the success of the men’s teams by defeating Naenae by 3-0.

The Rare Breeds unfortunately suf-fered a loss over the weekend going down 9-6 to the Hutt City United Gary’s.

The results see Wainuiomata remain at the top of the table on 30 points, The Rare Breeds sit in sixth on 16 points.

Next week the Wainuiomata Pres-sies are not playing but all the other teams in the club are.

The Wainuiomata Natives are play-ing are playing the Demons at Maid-stone Skin starting at 1.15pm.

The two womens teams are playing are up against each other on Saturday playing at JMM 3 beginning at 1.15pm.

The Under 15 boys are playing against Te Aroha at Wise Skin begin-ning at 9am.
