Continued from page 1“As she gets older, the scar part of her

lung gets healthier and the lung gets stronger,” says Krystal.

“She may never regain use but we will know more about if her lungs are get-ting stronger when she has turned two.”

The reason the family wants to raise money for the new tank is so they can take Ataahua out of the house.

“It will make it a million times easier,” says Krystal.

They currently have oxygen tanks that they need to transport for Ataahua to leave the house, but are hoping to raise enough money to buy a portable oxygen concentrator.

“You can only purchase them, you can’t rent them.”

Ataahua herself is a very happy girl who has possibly more passion for life than every other two year old.

“As far as she is concerned, she thinks she is normal,” Krystal says.

She is constantly playing around and Krystal says the rest of her family is great with her.

“All the kids know what to do if something goes wrong.”

Give a little for a life

The family is raising money through a give a little page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ataahuajourney.

They also have pages where they are auctioning off items, all of which

is raising the money needed for the portable oxygen tank.

The tank itself costs $5000, there is also the cost of the charger for batteries $1000 and spare batteries $400.

Wainuiomata Children got the chance to create their own bits of art when the Wainuiomata Pools hosted Artsplash recently

Artsplash gave children the op-portunity to create their own pieces of art that are to be displayed in the entrance to the pools.

The students were all having a great time, with some of them saying they want to get into art as a career.

Renee Barbarich says that she loves doing art.

“I am never going to stop doing art, it is fun and we get to be artistic.”

Her brother Reihana says that it is a fun day doing it, especially with all the people involved last week.

“We are pretty much all related here, I would like to do it more often,” he says.

The students created many different works of art including ninja turtles, some had dolphins and others were just painting the works in various colours.

There will be a second Artsplash this week, where people will get the chance to create more works of art that will be displayed in the pools.

This is intending to get the children to take ownership of the space so they take pride in the area and look after the pools.

The showing of Ghostbusters in Wai-nuiomata was cancelled last Saturday due to the high winds that Wainuio-mata was experiencing.

The event was cancelled on the day when workers setting up the bug screen found that the winds were too high and could cause a safety hazard.

The event will not be rescheduled but Hutt City Council is showing two more lms around the Hutt Valley in coming weeks.

Ghostbuster cancelled

Roadworks on the Wainuiomata Hill last week caused mayhem for people heading to work.

This was caused by a breakdown in machinery which caused the delay in tra c disrupting people going to work.

The issue has been dealt with and should not happen again, and the authorities involved apologize for any inconvenience.

Ezekial Stallworth had a successful meet at the Nor th Island Colgate Games recently, winning three medals all up.

He was part of the gold medal relay team, and won silver in both the high jump and medley.

He also came sixth in both the 100 and 200 metres fi nals.

Ezekial was representing Lower Hutt in the meet and

says he really enjoys athlet-ics and started liking it when taking part in school atheletics.

“I was part of a relay team at school, and we were behind by about 30 metres when it was my turn, then I got aged in caught up and we won by about 10 metres,” he says.

This gave him the passion to keep doing athletics.

He also plays basketball, rugby and touch when he is not competing in athletics

meets.Ezekial went to Las Vegas

last year playing basket-ball, and has played at tournaments all-round the country.

His next athletics meet is the Wellingon Champion-ships in Newtown Park, where he hopes to continue his good form.

By Aaron Meredith Local artist, Sophie Gardiner, has

recently been awarded funds from the Lower Hutt City Council Creative Communities Scheme, enabling her to run a series of art workshops for adults in Wainuiomata.

The focus of her classes are for lo-cal adults to engage their creativity, trying out new and traditional art techniques.

Wainuiomata Shopping Centre manager, David Tompkins, has agreed to support the local endeavour by providing exhibition space so the group can show their achievements once the course has fi nished.

Sophie believes the classes will bring a positive message about creativity in the community and she considers the exhibition to be an important aspect of the course.

The workshops will commence on the evening of February 26 and until March at Eco Boutique in Homedale Village.

Local eco designer Denise Anglesey is excited about hosting the art classes at the boutique.

The boutique showcases the talents of local designers, artists and crafters, who all share the same passion and

The Wainuiomata Community Hub will be keeping children busy over the last few weeks of the school holidays.

At the community centre on January 21 and 22 there will be an art session.

The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade hosted a hose running competition over the weekend.

Teams from Havelock North, Carterton and Fielding took part in the competition that was split into a two man race and a four man race.

The competition is designed to test the fi re fi ghters skills.

They carry out a range of activi-ties which is designed to test their core skills.

Hose running competitions take place all over the country,

and there is a national competi-tion, and even an international competition.

Results from the day include Wainuiomata placing second in the two man competition, which was won by Havelock North.

They also fi nished third in the four man competition which was won by Carterton.

Teams had to beat the clock in the race which saw which team was quickest in spraying over targets that were set up.

The competition was set up nationally in 1885, and most brigades around the country compete in these events.

Kids get active in parkBy Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata children had the chance to have fun and get active this week when the Hutt City Council’s Active Kids in the Park program took place.

The program is what formally was known as push play but when the council took over it was rebranded.

Terry Stallworth was running the program and has been involved since its inception in 2011.

As the title of the program says, it is all about getting children active, which Terry says helps children stay out of trouble.

“Children get in trouble when they are in trouble, we can minimalize the potential of causing trouble,” he says.

The program is a free program and has run all around the Hutt Valley.

“We take it to the people, it makes it easier for everyone when we do that,” Terry says.

“The numbers are always pretty good everywhere we go.”

The program is intending to help kids get outside and get off their PlayStations and computers.

“A lot of children are out of shape, it is a health issue,” Terry says.

“Children are a lot less active today, there is no question.”

Terry says when he grew up, he was always outside using what he could to play games and have fun.

“We use to grab a ball and a stick and play stickball, we were creative in ways we occupied our time,” he says.

“We spent time out at the playground and used our imagination.”

The program will be returning to Wainuiomata on Wednesday, January 28, taking place at Richard Prouse Park and Wise Park.

ACTIVE LIVES: Children participate in throwing a tennis ball into a hoop in order to win a pass to the Wainuiomata Pools.

FIRED UP: The Wainuiomata team compete against the clock at the hose challenge.

Dear Ed , I re -cently received a late Christmas pres-ent from the New Zealand Police, in the form of my fi rst ever speed camera ticket for an alleged speed infringement on Christmas Day.

Allegedly I was do-ing 55km/h passed the speed camera on

the Hutt side of the Wainuiomata hill.

This surprised me as, like most people, I am very cautious around this particu-lar speed camera.

While there is only a $30 fi ne, like most law-abiding citizens, I will pay the fine and learn my lesson.

And what lesson

have I learned? That I have been a victim of revenue-gathering by the NZ Police.

Our readers have their say.

Dear Ed, Mayor Lawrence Yules of Hasting is the presi-dent of Local Government New Zealand, a national or-ganisation.

Given that there are two other reorganisation proposals (one in Northland, and one in Wellington), I believe it is appropriate that Mayor Law-rence Yules should hold offi ce because LGNZ is national organisation.

I am not denying Mayor Yules an opinion, but how can you be at the centre of an amalgamation in the Hawkes Bay and be involved in an organisation which has a gov-ernance structure that affects New Zealand nationally.

I not saying there is a confl ict of interest pecuniary gain as I am not legally qualifi ed to do so.

I have been to a lot of Hutt

City Council meetings and I have seen the Hutt City coun-cillors who are appointed as directors to council control assets and leave the council ta-ble having not voted on issues which are related to our CCO.

I like to remind people this reorganisation plan is about more than amalgamation, it’s about local Government reform.

Watch is amazement as local watercolour artists create art right before your eyes.

Local artists from Water-colour New Zealand will set up their easels and paint in Dowse Square.

Artists will turn a blank canvas into a beautiful nature scene, and also in-ternational award-winning artist Jacky Pearson will paint a portrait of Mayor Ray Wallace.

Jacky Pearson is an Eng-

lish born artist that moved to New Zealand in 1991.

She loved to paint and draw from an early age, and now paints full time as a career.

Jacky was awarded the national Wai-Portrait best in show award in both 2011 and 2012.

She holds regular classes in Wellington as well as workshops and master classes all around the world.

Watercolour New Zea-

land is the country’s only society dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of watercolour painting.

About 400 amateur and professional artists make up the Wellington-based society, which takes part in workshops, critiques, painting days and major exhibitions throughout the year.

The event will take place on Saturday January 31 at the Dowse Square begin-ning at 12pm.

Many Wainuiomata groups will be preparing for the upcoming Te Ra o te Raukura festival at Te Whiti Park in Waiwhetu.

The festival is back big-ger and better for 2015, cel-ebrating its 21st Birthday.

Arohanui ki te Tangata (Goodwill to all Men) is theme for this year.

The name of this event Te Ra o te Raukura is signifi cant to the people at Waiwhetu and the tangata whenua in the Wellington Region.

The ‘Raukura’ was used as a symbol of peace, love and harmony by the proph-et Te Whiti O Rongomai at Parihaka.

He and fellow prophet Tohu Kakahi led their peo-ple to passive resistance and patient obedience as

an armed constabulary in-vaded the peaceful village of Parihaka on November the 5th in 1881.

Te Ra o te Raukura com-memorates this day and celebrates unity in Lower Hutt City and the wider Wellington Region.

This year Te Ra o te Raukura is a two day festi-val hosting the Wellington Maori Cultural Society Marae Haka on Saturday 31st January.

This event is a smoke free and alcohol free festival.

All proceeds from stall fees will go to Te Omanga Hospice. Car parking fees on Saturday will go to Waiwhetu Marae - Waka Crew and Sunday will go to the Maori Women’s Refuge.

LIFE’S HIGHWAY

By Aaron Meredith

With school fast approaching, children and parents alike will be getting worried about, whether they have enough stationary, whether they have a cool haircut or if they are ready for the stresses of school life.

The Wainuiomata News found some tips that

will help parents and children ease back into School life so eve-ryone can enjoy and feel confi dent that children are ready for school.

Tip one: Plan before you shopAlways make sure you know

what stationary and uniform you have to buy before going out and doing it, this means that you will not start spending money on

things you don’t need.Always make sure you do

stick as much as you can to the stationary list, yes sometimes you can’t afford that $600 calculator but there is always

another option.Uniform buying can

also be expensive but if you keep your eyes open,

there is always someone sell-ing second hand uniforms cheap, they may not be brand new but if you are on a budget they are a great option.

Tip two: Plan your morning routine

Have a plan for your mornings before school and work.

Mornings are hectic, and when you have people going off to work and school, stress levels can be high, to ease this, just relax and set out what you have to do.

Even if it is making sure all the children’s lunches are made the night before or getting everyone’s breakfast out ready to be made, it may make things run a bit smoother.

Tip three: Relax and enjoySchool is a fun time for children

of all ages, they may not see it when they are there but children will have a lot more fun at school then they let on.

Remember to encourage chil-dren when the encounter the nor-mal problems at school, whether it is bullies or struggling in exams.

Ode of the week

Local lawyer Susan Gwynn may not live in Wainuiomata but her roots are fi rmly planted in the valley.

Her grandfather Alexander Os-wald Drummond graduated from Wainuiomata Primary School in 1916.

Susan says that her great grand-father was a caretaker up in the waterworks back in the early 1900s.

“It is funny that I have all these links to Wainuiomata and now I am working here,” she says.

A lot of her family is buried around the Coast Road Church, showing that there is quite a big link between her and Wainuiomata.

Drummond Ridge in the Oron-ogorongo valley is also named after her family.

“It is a small world coming over here, it is nice to know that there are such close connections,” Susan says.

Many of her family will be remem-bered by people in the valley and Hutt City as they have been major parts of the community.

“The older people would probably remember them mostly,” Susan says.

She says that she has 44 first cousins and that Ada Drummond, her great Aunty married into the Woods family, a famous name in Wainuiomata.

“She lived down the Woods farm in Moores Valley,” she says.

Susan was born and bred over the Hutt but says that she has found that her links to Wainuiomata have been a great discovery.

“People wanted to know how I fi tted in here, and this is how I do.”

The bad weather affected the mens softball over the weekend.

The game which pitted the two men’s teams against each other was deferred due to the weather on Saturday.

The womens sides got a game, but may have wished that they hadn’t.

Wainuiomata went down to Totara Park 13-8 at JMM 2.

The Rare Breads were also playing at JMM but went down heavily to the Steelers 27-8.

The results see the teams sitting in fourth and fi fth on the table with Wainuiomata sitting on 16 points after 11 games, and the Rare Breads on 12 after 12 games.

In the mens presidents grade, the Wainuiomata team are sitting up top with 20 points after playing 10 games.

The Natives still sit second last on two points after playing nine games.

All deferred games from this week are taking place on Sunday next week, meaning teams will have a double header over the weekend.
