get cellphone reception down the coast after a winter of storms highlighting the need for cellphone coverage in disasters.

The rural ratepayers association chairman Shane Edwards says they have been working to get coverage for the past four months.

makes it hard to put reliable cover-age down Coast Road, however the popular Rimutaka Forest Park and recent winter storms means it is very important.

“It would be a really great thing to have down there.”

Shane says he often has people, locked out of the forest park, ask to use their phone because of the lack of coverage.

“Our phone bill defi nitely does

refl ect that but how can you turn someone away.”

The Rimutaka Forrest Park is a popular tramping spot and attracts a lot of visi-tors but without cellphone reception visitors can be left stranded.

“There is at least one search and rescue a year so cell-phone reception would be really helpful for that.”

There have been no deaths so far but Shane says it is

only a matter of time if they do not have faster access to rescue services.

“We shouldn’t wait for that to happen until something is done about it.”

Shane says the recent win-ter storms have highlighted the need for cellphone recep-tion for the rural residents.

The group is currently in consultation with the Hutt City Council.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation needs a new coordinator for the Wainuiomata area for their annual street appeal.

Last year’s coordinator Tamara Mauriohooho says it is a very reward-ing position to be in.

“You get joy out of it, and happiness.“It’s actually a lot of fun.” Tamara says she got involved be-

cause her mother-in-law had cancer and helped with the appeals.

“It was a way we could work to-gether.”

Tamara’s daughter Saela also helps, making three generations working together.

“I feel honoured to be in a position where I get to meet so many people affected by Breast Cancer.”

Tamara had to give up coordinat-ing the Wainuiomata area this year because she already has her plate full with the Hutt Valley and Petone area.

“I had to downsize so I can cover all the areas I need to.”

She has spent two years in Wainuio-mata and the Hutt Valley region and started off being a collector.

“I am quite committed to it. “The area coordinator manages a

small team of volunteers and will receive a roster of volunteers and all the materials necessary to run the appeal in the area.

The Breast Cancer Foundation is also looking for collection volunteers to help with them Pink Ribbon Street Appeal in Wainuiomata on Friday October 11 and Saturday October 12.

Wainuiomata volunteers will be part of the 7500-strong “pink army” of

collectors raising money on the streets of New Zealand.

Around 2800 women will be diag-nosed with breast cancer this year in New Zealand - one in nine women will be diagnosed over the course of their

lifetime - and more than 600 will die. The annual Pink Ribbon Street

Appeal is the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s single biggest fundraiser,

and is the most visible of its events in October, which is Breast Cancer

Month.To volunteer for the Pink Ribbon

The Hutt City Council have made it clear they will do their best to keep the Petone Hutt Union and Community Health Service open.The discussion took place at a meeting last night that was well-attended by people across the region. Mayor Ray Wallace says they have set up a working group to try and fi nd a solution to keep the centre open.“It was a good outcome.” The health centre caters to a lot of low-income families who would were concerned about the travel to Pomare Union Health Service if the local one closed.“For most of them that’s too much,” the Mayor says.

Konini Primary School are getting the chance to learn about technology and work with laptops as part of a trial conducted two days a week.

Konini Primary School ICT (Information Communication Technologies) teacher Paul Smith says it runs two days a week with the hope of going full time next year.

“These kids are growing up in a very digital world.

“We are just encouraging that and providing them with the skills we think they will

need.” The school bought 24 laptops

at the beginning of this term. “It’s given us a lot more op-

portunity to do shared work.” Twenty-four students spend

Thursdays and Fridays doing their work on the computers which cover all subjects from writing to maths.

The computers have a one to one ratio.

The school had limited win-dows based machines before buying the laptops.

Temara Mohr, 10, says she loves learning on the chrome books.

“I’ve never been on one before so it’s helping me with a lot of stuff.”

Tema ra’s buddy Ja neia Houghton,9, says the computers are a pretty cool way to learn.

“I love doing maths and all the writing we get to do.”

The idea for the chrome books learning was suggested by the Deputy Principal Kim Lupo and Principal Neil Sainsbury.

A Wainuiomata home owner has been told by the council he needs to fi x cracks in the concrete outside one of his properties that he believes were caused by substandard contrac-tors rather than the relocation of a house.

Joiner Stephen Mcivor says his father received a letter from the council telling him he needs to fi x the concrete outside his path where cracks have become evident.

“The council is claiming we did this when we put the house here.”

The problem stems to the relocation of a house onto the Wainuiomata Road property by Stephen and his father just before Christmas.

They have a sub clause in their relocation contract that says if they cause any damage they must fi x it. However Stephen says when they moved the house, it did not sit on the path concrete. The truck lifted it over the footpath and straight onto the grass.

He also says the cracks only appeared in January/February this year.

“It’s just getting worse and worse.” Steven says he has noticed damage down

the road as well and says this is proof it is from substandard work done by the footpath contractors rather than his house.

“Who do you go to when you see contractors doing substandard work for the Council?”

Stephen says he thinks they will end up having to repair the concrete despite believing they are not at fault.

However he says even if he replaces the one piece of concrete, there are cracks right down the road.

“It’s not just here. It’s right the way down the road.”

Stephen and his father think the damage could have been made worse by the recent earthquakes.

He says the work is not good enough and will cost him money through replacing the concrete and through rates.

“Either way we are going to pay for it.”

Council not fi xing cracks in footpath

Wainuiomata High School is set to host its fi rst Showtime event. Teacher in charge Simon Croft says the event aims to show the commu-nity what the schools in Wainuiomata have to off er. "Too often schools are judged not by the success of the many but the transgressions of the few." They are also aiming to get the schools to see the resources that the community can off er. The show will feature upcycling, a spelling bee, performances and tables from people in the community. There will also be youth awards.

Friends Who Care are facing having to sell their building to provide an income to move forward.

Chairperson Margaret Love says at this stage they are exploring options to keep the service running, and one of those options is the sale of their Wainuiomata property.

“We don’t have the money to upgrade [the building].”

They lost funding last June after the board decided not to renegotiate their contract.

“Everyone is devastated, change is never easy.”

However Margaret says they have still been providing support to service users.

“We still continue to give support to people.”

Friends Who Care provided a range of therapeutic activities and support for people with experience of mental illness or addictions.

With the loss of their funding, they are facing having no income to move forward.

“No income means basically, no services.

“Something has to be done.” The property at 6 Rowe Parade was

gifted to the Wainuiomata Community almost 40 years ago but if sold it would allow Friends Who Care to continue running.

“We don’t want to let it go but in real-ity we have to rethink how we function.

“Selling is an option which would mean for us, money in the bank, money to set up a mobile service, money to purchase a van and money to engage staff.”

Then they could also apply for fund-ing, which requires an income.

Margaret says it is important the service keeps running because it is a place to gather were people can do meaningful activities and are not judged.

“If we want to be part of the anti-stigma campaign and the education of the community then we need to stay.”

She says they need the support of Wainuiomata to be able to stay open.

“If the community wants to see this place recover, we need the community to back it.”

Board member Joe Krummenacher says Friends Who Care has always provided a wonderful service for people all around Wellington.

“People came as far as Upper Hutt and Wellington when it was in its prime.”

ness and study group that requires students to be up before dawn would become a popular place for boys to get to know each other and gain confidence but the Futures Programme is doing just that.

Co-organiser Heston Patea says the Futures Programme encourages young men to be fi t and study.

Heston picks the boys up around 4:45am on Tuesdays and Thurs-days.

“These kids are getting up just to come to this thing.

“There’s a huge commitment from them.”

The futures programme has been running for seven years and they start at start at 6am

Bill Sharp helped start the group in 2007 after concerns for the high level of truancy in Wainuiomata.

“They decided to do something about it,” Heston says.

The boys start with a fitness programme then shower and have breakfast before heading to the library to get some study in before school.

Heston started working in the Futures Programme in November 2007.

“I know it’s challenging at times but I just love it.

“Just seeing those young boys grow.”

He says they notice a big change in attitude, confi dence and doing well at school.

“That’s a huge reward for us.” But this is not a programme that is

promoted and advertised, it travels by word-of-mouth.

“They [the boys] go out and tell their mates.”

There are 22 in the core group but one week they had 40 boys turn up.

“That was just amazing.” Heston says anyone is welcome

in the group.

“If they really want to come - they can come.” He says the group is a good way for year nine

students to make the transition into college easier. “They open up a bit more and become more

confi dent in themselves.” The Ta Maiti Whangai youth worker says his day

job also means he gets to work with the guys.

“I try and help them out as much as I can and support them.”

Heston says he loves helping young people but it is his family who support him in it.

“I am very grateful I have a wife who allows me to do this.”

Heston Patea says he doesn’t mind getting up at 4:45am because he loves working with youth.

What is your favourite food?

What makes you smile?

Lots of things! My children, my husband, my friends, my community. I’m pretty easily pleased. I love a good laugh. I’ve found its one of the best forms of medicine and helps make all the hard things in life a little easier.

What’s your pet hate?

Something I see nearly every day: lack of car seats or correct car seats for our lovely children!

Your favoured holiday destination?

I was lucky enough to go to Rarotonga a few years ago. It’s the most beautiful place ever!

What’s your favourite music?

I love everything! I was brought up on Bob Marley and Kenny Rogers. My kids often complain that I have the music up too loud and its usually songs that are out now on the radio.

What is one thing Wainuio-mata News readers would be surprised to know about you?

My dad is Tongan. My sister and brothers are half Tongan.

I’m pretty fi ckle, it can change from day to day. Chocolate s probably my biggest weak-ness! What’s next on your

wish list?

Study at the moment. Post graduate papers on Well Child/ Tamariki Ora at Whi-tiera. Balancing work, chil-dren, family life and study - busy busy busy!

A saying you like to live by?“Wants versus Needs”. Ask my sister and kids and they will tell you that is what I say when they pipe up “I want, I want, I want!” I’m trying to instill in them what is important and what isn’t.

I would be cheeky and invite Jamie Oliver... of course he would have to cook!

will be heading to ArtSplash this week to perform as a choir.

Every year Konini Primary School performs in ArtSpalsh, a week of dance, drama, visual arts, and choir performances by schools from the Wellington region.

Last year, the school did a dance. This year, it’s the choir’s turn to perform.

Senior teacher Kirsten Reid is working with Judy Benseman to oversee the choir, and says the children have been practicing twice a week for two terms.

“It’s fun. School is more than academics.“The kids are really dedicated to the choir.

The girls come ready with their folders,” says Mrs Reid.

On the night, Konini Primary School will join with numerous school choir’s from around Wellington, and sing a range of songs such as Cabaret, Something in the Water, and Pure Imagination. Year 6 pupil Maria Williams has been in the choir for three years, and says it is a lot of fun.

“We all love singing, and I’m looking forward to performing!” she says.

Konini Primary School will be performing on Wednesday, 11 September at 5:30pm.Mrs Reid says they are hoping to keep performing as a choir, and are thinking of doing Christmas Carols.

even start thinking about Christmas yet, but the Wainuiomata Rotary Club are getting ready for their an-nual Santa Parade early.

Coordinator Joy Jones says they have started sending out letters to last year’s participants inviting them to join again this year.

“We’ve sent the letters out to all the usual people.”

She says they have already had a few responses back but are hoping to even more than the 30 involved last year.

“I would like to see a few more.” Joy says the parade, which has been

running for over twenty years, is an important part of the community and a great event to be part of.

“It brings Wainui together and it just shows good community spirit.”

Joy says they have plans to make this the best Santa Parade they have ever had.

“Each year it is gradually getting better.”

She says they had a very positive reaction to last year’s parade.

“Everyone said it was the best they had been too.”

Last year a market day was held at the same time as the parade.

“In the mall last year you couldn’t move. It was fantastic.”

The parade is set to take place on December 7 with a rain date of December 8 planned.

Left: On Friday, class 9HP fundraised for the Kapa Haka group at Wainuiomata High School with the idea of a car wash. The car wash was held in the Way of Life carpark.

Class 9NI ran a sausage sizzle on Queen Street to fundraise for the SPCA. The class came up with the idea, as well as provided most of the ingredients. The sausage sizzle ran from 10am to 1pm on Friday.

Top Right: Class 9HB held a bake sale on Queen Street to fundraise for the Community Centre. They did the bak-ing on Thursday after school, as well as on Friday morning.

Community Challenges

Year nine classes at Wai-nuiomata High School had the task of fundraising for a local

organisation of their choice on Thursday and Friday as part of the Community Challenge.

The Wainuiomata Swimming pool began to be built in 1966. The first part of the pool was opened on Novem-ber 25, 1967.

Later, around 1973, an extention was added to lengthen

the pool to Olympic Size.

What is your council background? I have had extensive local Council experi-

ence serving 19 years on the Wainuiomata Community Board, 15 years as Councillor for Wainuiomata and last 3 years as the Mayor. I have chaired the main Council committees and have an in-depth knowledge of Council processes and protocol.

Explain a little about yourself.I have lived in Wainuiomata for 25 years.

I am married to Linda Goss-Wallace who was born and bred in Wainuiomata. We have many friends and family living in the valley and we enjoy lifestyle here.

What is your proudest moment as mayor?

Leading the City Councillors to work united as one team and achieved the lowest rates in the region. We reduced Council debt and had record levels spent on improve-ments in the city along with attracting over $250million of new business investment which has provided jobs and growth.

Why should the people of Wainuiomata vote for you?

I have been the voice of Wainuiomata at Council for the past 18 years I know the needs of Wainuiomata residents. I have a proven track record of getting results and working hard for Wainuiomata. I’ve cham-pioned and fought hard for many projects including the Black Creek fl ood protection upgrade to ensure our residents are protected from future fl ooding.

How would you grow the Hutt Valley?As Mayor, I am already in discussions

with developers to encourage more quality homes being built in Wainuiomata. I am working collaboratively with Development Wainuiomata to ensure business expansion. ‘Big Save’ is moving its logistic operations centre here bringing more jobs. I will pro-mote ‘Technology Valley’ which will bring more business, growth and jobs for our city.

Meet our two candidates for the position of Mayor in the Hutt City...

The Wainuiomata Flower Show was a great event, according to co-ordinator Wendy Paulik.

She says that there were defi nitely more people who attended this year than in previous years.

“Entries were about the same because of the hot August, and the bad rain and wind last week,” Ms Paulik says.

“Given the weather conditions, we had a really good

show.”She says there was a great response from the schools,

although the children’s entries were down from last year.

“People loved it, and the new location was really well received.

“We will defi nitely be there again next year.”

What is your council background? Explain a little about yourself.

I worked as a Valuer for Lower Hutt City Council in the 1970’s. I worked with City Councils in the region for 30 years in the RMA Procedures. I was a foundation Member of NZ Rates Reform Association.

Why have you decided to run for Mayor?Have lived in the Hutt Valley my whole

life - 65 years. Feet on the ground sort of guy. Taken a couple of knocks on the way through but always have got up and started again. I really know what hard work is!

It breaks my heart to see how far we have slipped compared to places like Taupo, Hamilton, Tauranga, Nelson. Many facilities for our young people date back to the 1950’s such as Taita netball courts.

There is so much that can be held and expanded in the Hutt: Craft Exhibitions, Performing Arts, aged grade sport, Confer-ences, etc. They all go elsewhere, and it is a total embarrassment.

Why should the people of Wainuiomata vote for you?

Have never lived in Wainui (my father did for a short period after the War) but grew up in Moera and Park Avenue. Through sport and extended family interests such as Rugby, League, Tennis etc I do spend a lot of time here. I have refereed rugby for 26 years. I’d like to concentrate on establishing and Aged Care Facility. I have an announcement of a possible venutre, to be announced later this month.

How would you grow the Hutt Valley?An event led building recovery.What is a saying you like to live by?“Rise above it.” In business, married with

four grown children and 12 grandkids and a 95-year-old mother still going strong and with a huge extended family, you see a lot of life with ALL that it comes with.

amalgamated with Wellington in to a Super City. This community and our City have achieved so much of many years. Our debt is reducing and our rates increases remain the lowest in the region. That would change in a Super City and hit us all in the pocket. As Mayor I will continue to strongly voice our opposition to any forced amalgamation.

What would be your goal as mayor?Continue to lead a vibrant and inclusive city

that not only looks after, but also listens to its’ residents. I will remain accessible to resi-dents as I always have and will continue to be active in the community working shoulder to shoulder with the people of the valley. I will continue share my ‘energy’, ‘vision’ and ‘commitment’ with you all.

What do you see as the biggest issues facing the Hutt City?

Job loss and lack of vision. We are be-ing suffocated by Mayoral and Council inaction.

What would be your goal as mayor?I would like to be remembered as the

Mayor who re-established the Hutt to its “rightful place” in New Zealand.

The Wainuiomata Netball Twilight League is up and running for another year.

Organiser Peter Cowan says the aim has always been for a grassroots focus and to provide opportu-nities for women to engage in sports.

He says they learnt a few lessons from last year on how to improve the service.

The start date is September 24 and the season runs for eight weeks.

The fee per team is $320 or a $300 early bird fee is registered by September 20.
