schools in The Martinsburg Initiative, the groundbreaking opioid prevention program being spearheaded by MPD, Berkeley County Schools, and Shepherd University. The pilot schools were given the honor to choose the name of the Department’s new 10 month old German Shepherd who will be hitting the streets later this summer with MPD’s new canine handler, Patrolman Ryan Fritz. The votes are in, the ballots have been counted, and the winning name is
“Titan”—by a landslide! Earlier this year, Patrolman Fritz, one of two MPD “Officers of the Year” in 2016, was selected as the Department’s new canine handler. At the end of this month, Officer Fritz and Titan
will be starting an intensive six week training and certification course in Pennsylvania and are scheduled to begin full patrol duties by the first week of August. Aggressive drug enforcement, regular visits to schools, and positive engagement with the community will be the focus of the Canine Unit.
Shepherd University President Mary J.C. Hendrix announced a gift of $400,000 at the spring meeting of the Shepherd University Foundation Board of Directors. In announcing the gift, Hendrix said she was inspired by the recent $250,000 challenge gift
from Michael Smith, Foundation president and Shepherd alumnus, in support of Shepherd's College of Business. The gift will create the Shepherd Success Fund to provide vital seed support for Shepherd's future by funding initiatives critical for training the next generation.
Eight student leaders from Shepherd University spent time during a special assembly at Martinsburg High School on May 18 talking about the importance of attending college and
their experiences at Shepherd. The high school students heard about the opportunities the university offers, including the debate team, scientific research, fraternities and sororities, student government, the Med Step program, and athletics. The Shepherd students represented a variety of majors, including education, nursing, political science, recreation and sport studies, international studies, computer science, communication, biology, and pre-med.
Shepherd University improved in the category of student-faculty interaction in the annual National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) issued every three years by the Center for
Postsecondary Research at the Indiana University School of Education. Shepherd also improved in several other categories in the 2015-2016 survey, including involvement in service learning, culminating senior experience category, and the internship category.

This program wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors:
Human Services Day The Leadership Berkeley year is winding down with one last session in June and graduation on June 27. The Positive Leadership lesson for May’s session was on Gratitude.
Gratitude transforms the other capacities into something much more powerful. An authentic person who is also full of gratitude radiates as a much stronger person than an authentic person who is not grateful. Purpose fueled by gratitude has more meaning. Gratitude turbocharges one’s advocacy because its effects are contagious. In the face of challenge, gratitude can add a second wind to one’s resilience. Communities characterized by a mood of gratitude feel qualitatively different than places of casual association. With a sense of gratitude, a reasonable leader is able to connect to reality with greater boldness and discernment. Gratitude is the foundation for all of the leadership capacities learned in Positive Leadership. After a great discussion on Gratitude, the group traveled to the Department of Health and Human Resources and learned about poverty in the Panhandle and the challenges people face as they navigate the resources that are available to assist them. Special thanks go out to Trina Bartlett, Kathie Campbell, and Siobhan Bertone of Catholic Charities WV for organizing and leading this session. We also thank Peter Callahan (Callahan Counseling Services), Penny Porter (United Way of the EP), and Dianne Waldron (Meals on Wheels) for participating. The day ended with a fantastic tour and presentation by Karen Moss and Stacie Rohn at the Boys and Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle. The 2017 program year is almost complete. Submit nominations for next year’s program (begins September 2017) here.

“By experiencing and expressing gratitude, people can transform themselves and, by extension, the larger units within which they are embedded, becoming more creative, knowledgeable, resilient,
socially integrated and healthy… Organizational and community transformation occurs because each person’s positive emotions can reverberate through others. In part, this is because emotions are
contagious… When people act on their experiences of gratitude, for instance they create meaningful situations for others. ”

Back to the sweetened version? No! Sugar sweetened beverages are linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
How about water? Or water infused with fruit or herbs. It’s cheap, healthy, and the original beverage. Aaaaah.
