Bob’s 70 CockshuttBob Schmor said the very features that make his Cockshutt 70 attractive now are one of the reasons it is so rare.

Schmor, who spent a career in the financial industry, is retired in Steinbach and has restored several vehicles and tractors. The two that get out most now are his Cockshutt 60 and 70.

“The tractor was ahead of its time with the styled fenders and the side panels on the engine compartment,” he said. “The look was much different than farmers expected from a farm tractor and the side panels often caused the engine to overheat.” On early models the exhaust was led in under the closed cowl, that has changed on his tractors.”

“The farmer that owned my 60 took great care to put the panels away for the day he might be selling the tractor,” said Schmor. “As you can imagine they were often removed when the farmer was not in a great frame of mind and much more concerned about the temperature of the engine than saving the sheet metal that was adding to his overheating problem.”

A model 80 that had a much less stylized look later joined

the model 60 and 70. The 60 and 70 were built on contract for Cockshutt by Oliver in the US and shipped to Canada with a coat of red paint. “When I was restoring the trac-tors it was obvious they had been green at one time and the Cockshutt red was not on everything,” he said.

He chose the Cockshutts for restoration because it was a Canadian company. At the time, the company was manu-facturing farm machinery and felt they needed a tractor to complete the line-up. They contracted Oliver for the build. “Cockshutt was not entirely happy with the deal and felt they were getting some seconds in the manufacturing pro-cess,” he said. “The cast frame on my 70 shows some defects and by the time the contract was over Cockshutt was happy to move on. The company later produced a line of tractors numbered from 20 to 50. The engine parts of the 70 were produced by Continental and shipped to the Cockshutt facility where they were assembled so the company could claim they had built the engine.

Schmor said saving this bit of Canadian history is impor-tant to him, and not many of the tractors remain so he has done his best to maintain at least a couple of them.

Alfred’s 1950 John Deere Model AIt was a beautiful August weekend that our children and grandchildren invited us to go to Red Lake Falls for a camp-ing and tubing weekend.

The trouble is, I’m not a water rat so my wife suggested that we go to Fargo for the day. On the drive through Hitterdal, MN., my wife spotted a John Deere tractor along the high-way.

It brought back memories of eleven year old me. My uncle had a tractor just like it. He had shown me how to drive the tractor and got me to rake hay so he could bail it.

On our way back to the camping site, the tractor was still there. I took it as a sign and decided to stop to take a closer look.

The owner came over and began to tell us the story of the

tractor.

A neighbor had bought it brand new and had it rebuilt by the John Deere dealer because he was a dairy farmer and wanted to use it for haying.

Unfortunately, about four or five years later, he had a heart attack and then went on to retire.

That is when the owner acquired the tractor, but now he wanted to upgrade. After some bargaining, I, Alfred Blerot was now the proud owner of a 1950 John Deere Model A tractor (serial number 664837).

I was smiling all the way to Winnipeg. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of showing off my treasure by participating in the Mennonite Heritage Village and Eden Foundation Trac-tor Trek. Always an enjoyable event.
