“I hope you will join me in shaping the future of Shir Hadash.”

FROM JOY SPODICK, PRESIDENT

Looking Forward through Self-AssessmentWhen we announced the formation of the Rabbinic Transition Steering Committee, there were four teams established to carry

out the important work of planning for the next chapter in Shir Hadash’s growth: Interim Rabbi Search, Settled Rabbi Search, Engagement, and Benchmarking. As you heard at the Congregational Business Meeting on August 30, the Interim Rabbi Search team has completed its work, and we have hired Rabbi Ted Riter as our Interim Rabbi. Rabbi Riter will begin his work with us on January 1, 2021, when Rabbi Aron becomes our Rabbi Emerita.

Next up, we have the Benchmarking Team. This effort will begin our self-assessment study, which is both the vital first step as we begin our search for our new Settled Senior Rabbi and an opportunity to take stock of how Congregation Shir Hadash serves our community. The benchmarking process includes a congregation-wide survey, administered by the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ), designed to assess our Temple community in comparison to other well-run reform Jewish congregations, and it will also have some questions that will assist us in searching for a new Settled Senior Rabbi. The Survey will provide insights into our members’ views and opinions, revealing where you see our future. We intend to use this information to assist us to find new rabbinic leadership that can help us to continue to serve our community in ways that are important to our members. We will also run several small group focus groups, targeting specific demographics within the congregation to supplement the survey results.

The survey will be released in October, with results forthcoming from the URJ in mid-December. The focus groups will follow the survey results in early 2021. The final results of both the survey and focus groups will be shared with the congregation likely in Spring 2021. To complete the survey, every member of the congregation will receive a personalized link via email—please be on the look-out for the release of the survey as we want to hear from you! The Survey window will be open for three weeks, and we would like to achieve a strong response rate. Your thoughts on our future are very important. We need to understand what you are looking for in our future Senior Rabbi and how you would like to see Shir Hadash continue to evolve over our next 40 years!

In addition to the congregation-wide survey we will also be looking at financial and operating data benchmarking as well as a board self-assessment component. All of this information, data, and compiled results will help to guide us into the future and help to shape the selection of our new Settled Senior Rabbi.

This is important work. Without your input we cannot be successful. I hope you will join me in shaping the future of Shir Hadash.

I am sending heartfelt wishes to each of you for a sweet New Year. May you and yours be inscribed in the Book of Life for a long, healthy and happy life.

L’Shanah Tovah!

ShmoozefestsFriday, September 18, 9:30 PMby NeighborhoodSaturday, September 19, 2:00 & 3:00 PMby Life StageOne of the things we really cherish about everyone being together in one place on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur is being able to say hello to people we may not have seen for a while. This year, that will be harder to do virtually, but we have arranged special opportunities to connect.

The fi rst, on the eve of Rosh HaShanah, after services, we will have Zoom rooms by neighborhood for you to join and wish everyone a Shanah Tovah. On Rosh HaShanah afternoon, we will have Zoom rooms organized by life stage, including several groups for families with children of different ages, empty nesters, and revered elders, so you can connect with friends and others you’ve met at Shir Hadash along the way. A board member will be there to welcome you and to facilitate conversation. You can also jump between multiple Zoom rooms if you wish.

break-the-Fast-in-a-boxHouse of Bagels has created a delicious box for you and your family to enjoy after services. Complete with all of the things you are used to having—bagels, cream cheese, lox, and all the fi xings, salads, and dessert.

All you will have to do is order, pick up your box curbside and contact-less at Shir Hadash, and enjoy with your family. Volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves and will bring the food to your car. We ask that you also wear a mask when picking up. Deadline to place order is Friday, September 25!

Order break-the-fast-in-a-box at hadash.link/breakthefast.

Cost: $32 (serves 2) or $60 (serves 4).

Pick your box up at the temple on Monday, September 28, from 1 to 4 PM.

Virtual Gatherings Around Your Holiday TableFriday, September 18, 5:45 PMSunday, September 27, 5:45 PM

There are special short rituals for welcoming the holidays around your table, and we would like to share those with you on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur eves via Zoom.

On Erev Rosh HaShanah, join us as we light candles, make Kiddush, and share some elements of the special Sephardi practices for the holiday. On Erev Yom Kippur, there’s a tradition that the meal we eat before the fast is as important as the fast itself. We don’t make Kiddush or light candles until after the meal is done, but we will guide you through some ways to make it special. Consider having 18 silver dollars (or quarters) on hand to participate in an

old custom of fulfi lling the words of Unetaneh Tokef, that “prayer, repentance, and charity can avert the harshness of the decree.”

Register at hadash.link/aroundyourtable, for Erev Rosh HaShanah, or at hadash.link/aroundyourtable2 for Erev Yom Kippur, to receive a zoom link via email.

SUKKOT & SIMCHAT TORAH

Dinner in the SukkahOctober 2–9By Reservation

Our volunteers will soon be building the congregation Sukkah on the patio and we want to take this time to invite everyone to have an opportunity to dine within—albeit, a little differently this year.

A brief Sukkot program will begin each dinner, where a member of the clergy will be present to lead some brief prayers and recite the blessing over the lulav and etrog.

Instead of having set groups each night as usual, we are opening up two time slots each evening for your family or household (no more than six people, please). The time slots are 5:00–6:00 PM and 6:45–7:45 PM. Please make reservations here in advance.

No more than three families/households will be in the Sukkah at the same time and we will make sure tables are at least six feet apart. Please bring your own picnic, including utensils, plates, etc. We will provide plastic disposable tablecloths, which our gloved facilities crew will put out for you to place on the table yourselves. When you are fi nished, all we request is that you fold up the tablecloth with your garbage and toss. Our crew will clean off chairs and anything else needed between the two sittings.

Erev Simchat Torah ServiceFriday, October 9, 7:00 PMOur current plan is to have our Erev Simchat Torah service in person! The evening will begin with a Torah reading on our porch in front of the Sanctuary. After the Torah reading, we will be able to enjoy the beautiful instrumental music of Joel Nelson’s band, and a dance lesson taught by Karina Lambert.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we will have some restrictions placed on this in-person event. Singing is not allowed due to public health restrictions. Each family (or pod) will have a designated spot to sit and dance in to allow for proper social distancing.

Reserve your spot online! This event is limited to the fi rst 60 people who sign up. Please make sure to check the online calendar as programs may be subject to change.

Yizkor ServiceSaturday, October 10, 10:30 AMJoin us by Zoom for our Simchat Torah Shabbat morning service. In this service, we place special emphasis on honoring our elders. We will also invite those under 13 for a special blessing. During the Simchat Torah service, we will also say Yizkor for our loved ones who have died.

Consecration ServiceFriday, October 2, 7:00 PMJoin us for the joyful celebration of Sukkot! The Erev Sukkot Consecration Service honors the students who are beginning their formal Jewish education—from kindergartners to those who are new to our program. New students will receive a special blessing to mark the beginning of their learning adventure.

SPOTLIGHT ON:

The Caring CommitteeRecently, we started a new series that we are calling “Spotlight on Committee.” Each month, we introduce one of the many committees at Shir Hadash and learn from members or chairs about the activities and goals of the committee. This way, our entire community can learn more about the many ways to get involved at Shir Hadash and the ways we work together to form an even stronger community.

This month, our spotlight is on the Caring Committee. Read on below to learn more from Susan Levin and Linda Wolf.

It feels a bit “chutzpahdik” to talk about the Caring Committee at Shir Hadash since we are a congregation that prides ourselves on supporting each other. Nevertheless, perhaps because of this caring ethos, we have a committee to handle specifi c suggestions that come up and to be on alert for areas where we might fi ll a need.

The Caring Committee has about ten members. Some of us are in the helping professions: health care workers, therapists, teachers. But don’t let that hold you back from joining us—a good heart is all that this requires!

We have several ongoing programs that operate behind the scenes: providing meals for members in crisis, sending birthday cards to seniors, and maintaining a supply of durable medical equipment for congregants. Ongoing synagogue activities that fall under our umbrella include a meditation and chair yoga class, Alzheimer’s support group (open to the community), and a conversations on clutter group. We are especially proud of our friendly visitors outreach program, which transformed from in-home visits to phone calls during Shelter-in-Place.

Every spring, we sponsor a Friday evening Caring Committee Shabbat service. In recent years our topics

have included “Getting Good at Getting Older,” “SOS: Stop the Stigma of Mental Illness,” “Supporting Our Aging Parents and Finding the Support We Need,” and “Staying Sane in the 24-Hour News Cycle.”

Typically, we sponsor a discussion during the Yom Kippur afternoon break, often related to diffi cult issues such as end-of-life planning or support for caregivers. This year, our program will be “Taking Care of Yourself and Others.” We have developed expertise in initiating end-of-life discussions. We will be happy to come to your Havurah to discuss Advance Care Health Directives or how to use the Go Wish cards to sort out end-of-life priorities. And, when you next visit the synagogue library, take a look at the Life Planning Guide.

We love serving on the Caring Committee, which has attracted a lovely group of empathetic people who are always on the lookout for topics that might be useful for the members of Congregation Shir Hadash.

We welcome new members. We meet every other month. Come join us and share your ideas!
