Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) since 1955 Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) since 1955 ...celebrating 60 Years in 2015!

Hi Members,

Welcome to another bumper edition of the ViaWest magazine. It has been a while since my last report

(thanks Ray for stepping in during my absence). Now if you like VW spotting while away on holiday

don’t go to Italy because it was challenging to see any there! Except for one lonely kombi I came across

parked up in a field in Tuscany.

Well I got my VW fix this weekend by attending the 60th Anniversary cruise to Whiteman Park. It was

lovely being surrounded and I enjoyed the free sausage sizzle that the club put on, and the various of-

fers that Ray had organized for activities at the park.. A big thank you goes out to the many hands that

helped put this together. The event was also a fund raiser for the clubs chosen charity The Douchenne

Foundation. I saw some very generous amounts being put into the collection tins.

The Annual General Meeting was held last month and as a result of the formalities and hand raising we

have had a shuffle on the committee and seen some new faces (see over leaf) join the team. Nice one

to these guys and again and another thank you to all the committee members for their efforts last year.

The next major event is the Margaret River Weekend. There appears to be a lot of people attending this

one. I think that Kim Muste the organiser might be slightly worried that we wont fit on the field this time

around!

6th December is “The Day of the Volkswagen” celebrating not just the clubs

birthday but that of the Karmann Ghia too. So please if you have a KG get

it along and help make it a great display.

Volkswagen

Australia

introduces AWD Alltrack

model to its

award-

winning Golf

7 range Golf Alltrack features the lat-

est 4MOTION all-wheel drive

and unique exterior and inte-

rior styling.

New more powerful 1.8 litre

turbocharged TSI engine

mated to a six-speed DSG

transmission

For the first time Volkswagen has

released an Alltrack version of the

Golf allowing customers to explore

further than before. Based on the

spacious and practical Golf Wagon,

the new Golf Alltrack offers an in-

creased level of unique standard

features and the added ability to

explore with confidence.

The Golf Alltrack sets benchmarks

in its class in terms of its ability to

handle both sealed and unsealed

roads as a wagon- a unique con-

cept in this car segment.

This is due to the model’s 4MO-

TION all-wheel drive system fea-

turing the latest generation Haldex

coupling.

Also new to the Golf range is the

Alltrack’s TSI petrol engine. The

powerful 1.8 litre turbocharged TSI

engine makes 132kW and 280Nm,

while still offering a low combined

fuel consumption figure of 6.7 li-

tres per 100km. This is achieved

with the assistance of BlueMotion

Technology which comes standard

on the Golf Alltrack and includes

engine start/stop and brake energy

recuperation, as well as a coasting

function; a feature of the Alltrack’s

Eco drive mode – one of several

adjustable settings available as

part of the Alltrack’s driver profile

selection.

The Golf Alltrack’s driver profile

selection feature enables drivers to

select an appropriate pre-

determined drive setup from a

choice of eco, sport and, unique to

the Alltrack, off-road mode. The

Golf Alltrack comes standard paired

with a six-speed DSG transmission,

which also ensures the best possi-

ble performance and efficiency

from the 1.8-litre TSI engine.

The Golf Alltrack holds a com-

manding presence on the road

among other Golf Wagon models,

and is distinguished by a number

of external visual cues that both

enhance the vehicle’s appearance

and its practicality on dirt roads.

The Golf Alltrack displays sits high-

er, thanks to a higher ground

clearance of up to 20mm above a

standard Golf Wagon model, while

wheel arch mouldings and flared

side sills offer additional body pro-

tection. Rounding off the Alltrack’s

exterior, newly designed bumpers

with Bi-Xenon headlights with dy-

namic cornering function make the

vehicle instantly recognisable from

the front, while the standard 17-

inch ‘Valley’ alloy wheel , specifi-

cally created for the vehicle and

unique rear badging, once again

showcases the Golf Alltrack’s

sporty credentials and complete

the Alltrack-specific look.

The car’s stylish exterior design

continues inside the Golf Alltrack,

with sophisticated interior styling

defined by such details as Vienna

leather appointed upholstery, a

leather multi-function steering

wheel and gearshift knob, as well

as ambient lighting in the door trim

and LED reading lights. (Continued on page 27)

The Golf Alltrack also features the

latest in Volkswagen’s infotainment

technology, with the added con-

venience of the innovative App-

Connect system, which features

Apple CarPlay® and Android Au-

to® systems, which allow drivers

to access content from their latest

generation smartphones to access

music, messaging and navigation.

This integrated technology is dis-

played in high definition via the 6.5

-inch Discover Media unit, which

also offers USB, SD card and AUX-

in connectivity.

At its heart, the Golf Alltrack im-

bues all the outstanding qualities of

the Golf Wagon, and adds more.

Providing generous boot space with

the ability to hold 605 litres of car-

go volume even with 5 adults on

board, the Alltrack is

the perfect vehicle

for extra-long weekends. The cargo

area offers an impressive interior

length of 1,055mm up to the back

of the rear seats and 1,831mm of

interior length up to the back of

the front seats. With convenience

and practicality in mind, the Golf

Alltrack also provides owners with

a luggage partition net, shopping

bag and load restraint hooks, inte-

rior illumination and a 12V socket

in the boot.

As a Volkswagen, the Alltrack has

been engineered to feature the lat-

est safety systems, to ensure max-

imum passenger protection. The

new Golf Alltrack comes standard

with multi-collision brakes, a driver

Fatigue Detection system, a low

tyre pressure indicator, parking

distance sensors and reversing

camera, ESP and XDL. In addition,

seven airbags including front, front

side, curtain (front and rear), and

driver’s knee airbags have been

installed to ensure standard safety

features are met, along with safety

optimised front head restraints and

three-point seat belts.

Optional Packages

With an impressive list of standard

features and equipment, the Golf

Alltrack offers customers a wide

range of practical and convenient

inclusions. However, should cus-

tomers wish to enhance their Golf

Alltrack even further, two optional

packages are available which add

value-for-money and a host of lux-

ury and assistance systems.

The optional

Driver Assistance

Package adds increased safety

above the already stellar standard

levels of the new Golf Alltrack. In-

cluded in the package is Adaptive

Cruise Control (ACC), Front Assist

with City Emergency Brake (EB),

Park Assist and a proactive occu-

pant protection system.

The optional Sports Luxury Pack-

age enhances the Golf Alltrack ex-

terior and interior appearance with

a panoramic electric glass sunroof,

18-inch ‘Canyon’ alloy wheels,

gearshift paddles and dark tinted

rear side and rear window glass.

Volkswagen Australia has unveiled

the all-new Passat, introducing the

eighth generation of this best-

and its overall package has been

improved. While preserving all of

Interior. The cars stylish exterior

design continues inside the new

Passat, as the interior has been

developed with the aesthetics and

quality to match the sophisticated

new design solutions such as a

concise continuous horizontal band

New

champion in

the VW Beetle: Scott

Speed wins

Global

Rallycross

title in USA Scott Speed wins coveted Driver title in Las Vegas

(USA)

Impressive record for the

Volkswagen Beetle GRC

Volkswagen runner-up in the

Manufacturer Championship

Scott Speed (USA) is the new

champion of the Red Bull Global

Rallycross (GRC) series in the USA.

A podium finish in the final race of

the season in Las Vegas was suffi-

cient to earn Speed the title at the

wheel of the Volkswagen Beetle

GRC. Speed followed a victory in

the heats with a win in the semi-

final, before starting the final from

pole position. He then produced a

measured race – heavy rainfall had

transformed the circuit in the heart

of the American metropolis into an

ice rink – to finish third in the final.

Volkswagen ended its first season

with the Beetle GRC in second

place in the Manufacturer Champi-

onship.

“Winning the title at the first at-

tempt in the first full Red Bull Glob-

al Rallycross season with the Beetle

is a fantastic success for

Volkswagen,” said Volkswagen Mo-

torsport Director Jost Capito. “The

Beetle showed what it was capable

of, particularly in the second half of

the season. It boasts an impressive

record. The Volkswagen Andretti

Rallycross Team and our techni-

cians in Germany worked perfectly

together. It is always a very close

affair in Global Rallycross, and the

races are fiercely-competitive. That

makes us all the happier to have

won the title. I would obviously al-

so like to say a big thank you to

our drivers Scott Speed and Tanner

Foust. They have had a great sea-

son and pushed each other to out-

standing performances. Congratu-

lations, in particular, to Scott on

his thoroughly deserved Driver ti-

tle.”

“I am absolutely delighted with this

title. It is an indescribable feeling,”

said Speed after the final. “The

Volkswagen Beetle GRC is a fantas-

tic car. I would like to thank every-

one at the Volkswagen Andretti

team. This success would not have

been possible without their out-

standing effort. It has been a long

season, and we were always confi-

dent that the Beetle is a natural

born winner. We worked hard to

come through the tricky period at

the start of the season, and came

away with the title.” Speed’s team-

mate Tanner Foust (USA) dropped

back through the field following a

collision in the final, eventually

crossing the finish line in ninth

place. He ultimately finished third

in the championship.

Impressive record: Volkswagen

Beetle GRC the car to beat

The Volkswagen Beetle de-

veloped into a force to be

reckoned with for the op-

position in its first full GRC

Season. The 560-hp, four-

wheel drive Beetle, sent

into action by Volkswagen

of America and developed

in Germany by Volkswagen

Motorsport, was the car to

beat in the second half of

the season. Its record is an

impressive one: Speed and

Foust made it onto the podium

thirteen times this season, climbing

onto the top step as winners on

five occasions. The penultimate

round of the season, a double-

header in Barbados, saw Speed

and Foust ensure that only they

could be crowned champion. The

only question still to be answered

at the legendary “Strip” in Las Ve-

gas was which of the two

Volkswagen drivers would win the

title.

Global Rallycross: spectacular race

action in the USA and the Caribbe-

an

This year’s Global Rallycross cham-

pionship featured twelve rounds –

in Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, New

River, auto city Detroit, Washing-

ton D.C., Los Angeles, Barbados

and Las Vegas. One of the high-

lights of the season was undoubt-

edly the GRC’s outing in Barbados.

The Caribbean hosted the penulti-

mate round of the season – one of

four challenging double-headers,

with two races on one weekend –

against the picturesque backdrop

of the South Seas. The GRC races

are always packed with action and

a real draw for spectators – the

compact races are followed closely

and the subject of much discus-

sion, particularly on social net-

works. The circuits consist of a

combination of asphalt and gravel

with spectacular jumps, which of-

ten see cars airborne for over 30

metres. Exciting and spectacular

races are the order of the day in

the GRC.

FIA World Rally Championship Maiden victory for Mikkelsen and Fløene, Latvala runner-up

Andreas Mikkelsen (N) and Ola

Fløene (N) won the Rally Spain

with Volkswagen to take their place

on the illustrious list of winners in

the FIA World Rally Championship

(WRC) for the first time. Their first

win helped Volkswagen to a re-

markable one-two – the seventh of

the season. The Norwegians

clinched victory in the dying sec-

onds of the rally, on the closing

Power Stage. Mikkelsen/Fløene

won the final stage, defeating their

team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala/

Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) by 3.1 sec-

onds, before benefitting from a ra-

re mistake from fellow Volkswagen

duo Sébastien Ogier/Julien In-

grassia (F/F). The three-time world

champions strayed from the racing

line and touched a crash barrier,

causing such severe damage to

their car that they were forced to

retire. After twelve podiums with

the Polo R WRC, this was the first

appearance on the top step of the

rostrum for Mikkelsen and Fløene –

in their 64th start at the pinnacle of

rally.

This was the eleventh win of the

season for the Polo R WRC, and the

car’s 33rd victory since making its

debut in January 2013. One round

of

this year’s World Rally Champion-

ship remains: the Rally Great Brit-

ain will take place in Wales from 12

to 15 November.

Touringcar Interna-tional Series - Tomas Engström finishes in the points twice Thomas Engström claimed two

points finishes at the penultimate

round of the Touringcar Racer In-

ternational Series (TCR). The

Swede, at the wheel of the new

Volkswagen Golf for the racetrack,

finished eighth and sixth in the two

races at the Chang International

Circuit in Buriram (T). Engström

was rewarded with twelve points

for his efforts. In contrast, Mikhail

Grachev endured a miserable

weekend in the second Volkswagen

Golf, scoring no points. The two

races were won by the two main

title contenders, Stefano Comini

(CH) and Pepe Oriola (E).

The Seat drivers are separated by

just two points, with Comini in

front on 299 points. The final round

of the TCR will take place on Mon-

aco’s iconic street circuit on 22 No-

vember.

Engen Volkswagen Cup - Pepper bags a brace, van der Linde on cusp of winning second title Tasmin Pepper (ZA) bagged a

brace of wins on the penultimate

race weekend of the Engen

Volkswagen Cup South Africa. The

flying lady from South Africa won

two of the three races at the Killar-

ney Motor Racing Circuit. Victory in

race one went to Sheldon van der

Linde. The South African came

home ahead of Pepper and Daniel

Rowe (ZA) on the 3.267-kilometre

racetrack in the South African

province of Western Cape on Sat-

urday morning. Race two saw Pep-

per cross the finish line first, ahead

of Chris Shorter (ZA) and Mathew

Hodges (ZA). She then finished

ahead of van der Linde and Shorter

to take victory in race three. Van

der Linder is in pole position in the

overall standings. The 16-year-old

South African now has 360 points

to

his name and travels to the finale

in the South African province of

Gauteng with a 44-point lead over

Matthew Hodges (316). Van der

Linde, who was crowned the

youngest champion in the history

of the Engen Volkswagen Cup last

year, is well-placed to win his sec-

ond championship in a row at the

Kyalami Racing Circuit (ZA) on 7

November. Away from the title

race, Shaun La Reservee (ZA) was

busy setting course for next sea-

son: he used the races in Western

Cape to test the Volkswagen Polo

for 2016 under competitive condi-

tions

Volkswagen Fun Cup - Allure Team 2 wins the title in Mettet

Champions in Mettet: Allure Team

2 won the title at the final round of

the season in the Volkswagen Fun

Cup Belgium. Second place at the

ten-hour race at the Circuit Jules

Tacheny was to prove good enough

for the team, consisting of Cédric

Bollen, Frédéric Caprasse, Guil-

laume Mondron and Edouard

Mondron. Victory in the Belgian

province of Namur went to Claudio

Cappelli and Federico Sordini (8Ks

Corse team). The Italian duo came

home one lap ahead of the new

champions after 455 laps of racing.

Third place went to Jac Motors 1,

with drivers Laurent Jaspers, Sté-

phane Henry de Frahan and Nicolas

Nulens. Socardenne ended the

2015 season in second place. The

team of Christophe Nivarlet, Kevin

Balthazar, Renaud Martin and

François Verbist finished sixth in

Mettet. With 411 points to their

name, they came up 34 points

short of Allure Team 2 (445). The

two teams will meet again on 17

December, only this time it will not

be on the racetrack: the drivers

and teams will be presented with

their trophies in Brussels.
