Hi Club Members and Readers……

No its not the President, you have a guest scribe this edition, yes its me the Editor.

I trust you are enjoying the magazine in whichever form you are receiving it, with the electronic

version (i.e. the online link) in living colour proving to be more and more popular with most members now taking

it this way. Besides our members, the magazine goes to many WA VW related businesses, sponsors and support-

ers who since the July issue mostly receive the electronic version. Our magazine also goes to many of the inter-

state VW clubs only in the electronic version.

Recently a review of the hardcopy ViaWest costs showed our $3.00 per issue on the front page was out of date,

and it now costs around $4.00 per issue to get printed, stapled and folded. Just as bit of trivia, a colour hardcopy

of the same size would be around $10.00 per issue. We thank our printer Cristal JBE Office Choice in Willet-

ton...see advert in this edition, for the discounts we receive to keep the hardcopy price to a minimum.

The savings made by the move from hardcopy to the electronic copy of the magazine is a major contributor to the

club keeping the membership subscription to $50.00 per year, the same as I paid when I joined in 2000.

On the subject of the membership subscriptions, the clubs membership renewals have all been posted and you

should have yours by now...if not, contact our Membership Officer, Andy Macey. Payment is due and if you pay by

1st September you will go into the draw for a FREE membership for 2016/17. Bob Lafferty was the lucky member

last year and enjoys his 2015/16 membership FREE of charge. If you do not pay by 30th September, you will lose

your club membership.

Still on the subject of memberships, the club celebrated the end of the 2014/15 financial year with a record 204

memberships ...this has never been achieved while I have been at the club, WELL DONE! To reach this milestone

in our 60th Anniversary year makes it all the more special.

Just to finish off, a bit of analysis of our members, yes you lot. According to our membership register, the 204

memberships includes 10 life members with 27 members living outside the metropolitan and Mandurah area. The

204 equates to 517 persons (takes in140 partners and 173 children) with 349 cars listed. Imagine 173 future vee-

dubbers and maybe members one day.

Looks like I have run out of room, thank you all again for being such great members and I’ll see you out there on

one of our club member events...check the Via West calendar, our website, Facebook and forum!

YORK CRUISE & CAMP 2015

With threatening skies then warm

sunshine we all met at the Mund-

aring Hotel. Once we were all

there we started our cruise to

York. It is a great road with lots of

lovely natural bush, picturesque

farmland and winding roads.

All arriving in historically beautiful

York we made our way to the cara-

van park to set up for the night,

circle your wagens-style, and with

the marquees up we braced our-

selves for a cold but loads of fun

night.

I think there were 24 cars with

some new members travelling from

afar to join in on the fun. The piz-

zas went down a treat and so did

the alcohol. The marquees and the

gas heaters that were brought with

us kept us all nice and warm or

maybe that was the

fun company.

We were very lucky

with the weather; it

was cold but no rain.

In the morning the

park was very foggy

and a few heads

might have been as

well. We all packed

up and made our

way into town for

the York Vintage Car

Show.

As usual the

Volkswagens looked

fantastic all lined up

in one place and

represented almost all the different

types and ages. The club received

lots of praise from the organisers.

We all had a relaxing day strolling

around York town, looking at all

the other vintage vehicles and

chatting in the sun.

Until the next cruise, happy dub-

bing everyone…

Jo Mill

Volkswagen

Karmann Ghia

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a

sports car marketed in 2+2 coupe

(1955–1974) and convertible

(1957–1974) body styles by

Volkswagen. The Karmann Ghia

combined the chassis and mechan-

icals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with

styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian

carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built

bodywork by the German coach-

builder Karmann.

The Karmann Ghia was internally

designated the Type 14. In 1961,

Volkswagen introduced the Type

34, a variant based on the newly

introduced Type 3 platform and

featuring angular bodywork.

Production doubled soon after its

introduction, becoming the car

most imported into the U.S. More

than 445,000 Karmann Ghias

were produced in Germany over

the car's production life, not in-

cluding the Type 34 variant. Kar-

mann Brazil produced 41,600 cars

locally for South America between

1962 and 1975.

American industrial designer Wal-

ter Dorwin Teague included the

Karmann Ghia in his list of the

world's most beautifully designed

products.

The Type 14 debuted at the Octo-

ber 1953 Paris Auto Show as a

styling concept created for Ghia by

Luigi Segre.

In the early 1950s, Volkswagen

was producing its economy car, the

Type 1 (Beetle). With an increase

in post-war standards of living, ex-

ecutives at Volkswagen proposed

adding a halo car to its model

range, contracting with German

coachbuilder Karmann for its man-

ufacture. Karmann in turn con-

tracted the Italian firm Ghia, who

adapted styling themes previously

explored for Chrysler and Stu-

debaker to a Beetle floorpan wid-

ened by 12 in (300 mm). Virgil

Exner claimed that the design was

his, based on the 1953 Chrysler

D'Elegance.

In contrast to the Beetle's machine

-welded body with bolt-on fenders,

the Karmann Ghia's body panels

were butt-welded, hand-shaped,

and smoothed with English pewter

in a time-consuming process com-

mensurate with higher-end manu-

facturers, resulting in the Karmann

Ghia's higher price.

The design and prototype were

well received by Volkswagen exec-

utives, and in August 1955 the first

Type 14 was manufactured in Os-

nabrück, Germany. Public reaction

to the Type 14 exceeded expecta-

tions, and more than 10,000 were

sold in the first year.

The Type 14 was marketed as a

practical and stylish 2+2 rather

than as a true sports car. As they

shared engines, the Type 14's en-

gine displacement grew concur-

rently with the Type 1 (Beetle),

ultimately arriving at a displace-

ment of 1584 cc, producing 60 hp

(45 kW).

In August 1957, Volkswagen intro-

duced a convertible version of the

Karmann Ghia. Exterior changes in

1961 included wider and finned

front grilles, taller and more round-

ed rear taillights and headlights

relocated to a higher position –

with previous models and their

lower headlight placement called

lowlights. The Italian designer Ser-

gio Sartorelli, designer of Type 34,

oversaw the various restylings of

Type 14.

In 1970, larger taillights integrated

the reversing lights and larger

wrap-around turn signals. Still

larger and wider taillights in-

creased side visibility. In 1972,

large square-section bumpers re-

placed the smooth round originals.

For the USA model only, 1973

modifications mandated by the Na-

tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-

ministration (NHTSA) included en-

ergy-absorbing bumpers. A car-

peted package shelf replaced the

rear seat.

In late 1974 the car was supersed-

ed by the Porsche 914 and the

Golf/Rabbit based Scirocco.

Type 34

Karmann

Ghia

In September 1961, Volkswagen

introduced the VW 1500 Karmann

Ghia, or Type 34, based on its new

Type 3 platform, featuring

Volkswagen's new flat 1500cc en-

gine design, and styling by Italian

engineer Sergio Sartorelli. Due to

model confusion with the Type 14

1500 introduced in 1967, the Type

34 was known variously as the

"Der Große Karmann" ("the big

Karmann") in Germany, "Razor

Edge Ghia" in the United Kingdom,

or "European Ghia" (or "Type 3

Ghia" among enthusiasts) in the

United States. Today the name

Type 34 is recognized as the

worldwide naming convention.

The second automobile model in

the world to have this option, an

electrically operated sliding steel

sunroof was optional in 1962. The

styling offered more interior and

cargo room than the original Kar-

mann Ghia. It featured an electric

clock, three luggage spaces, built-

in fog lights, round tail lights, up-

pads, and long padded armrests. It

was the fastest production VW

model of its day.

Until it was replaced by the VW-

Porsche 914, it was the most ex-

pensive and luxurious passenger

car VW manufactured in the

1960s – back then a Type 34 cost

as much as two basic Beetles in

many markets. The comparatively

high price meant it never generat-

ed high demand, and only 42,505

(plus 17 prototype convertibles)

were built over the car's entire

production life between 1962 and

1969 (roughly 5,000 a year). To-

day, the Type 34 is considered a

semi-rare collectible with values

ranging from US$25,000 (nice

original or restored) to $8,000

(driving project) to $3,000 (non-

driving parts car). Values in Europe

are the highest; an unrestored

original Pearl White 1962 Coupe

sold for US$34,000 in Germany in

late 2010.

Although the Type 34 was availa-

ble in most countries, it was not

offered officially in the U.S. – VW's

largest and most important export

market – another reason for its low

sales numbers. Many still made

their way to the USA (most via

Canada), and the USA has the

largest number of known Type 34s

left in the world (400 of the total

1,500 to 2,000 or so remain-

ing[14]).

Like its Type 14 brother, the Type

34 was styled by the Italian design

studio Ghia. There are some simi-

lar styling influences, but the Type

14 Ghia looks very different from

the Type 34. The chassis is also a

major difference between the cars

and the bumpers remain the same;

the Type 14 shares its chassis with

a Beetle, whereas the Type 34

body is mounted on the Type 3

chassis and drive train (the same

as in a 1500/1600 Notchback, Var-

iant (Squareback) and Fastback) –

all distinguished by the standard

1500 pancake engine that allowed

a front and rear boot. The Type 34

is mechanically the same as other

Type 3s. All bodywork, interior,

glass, bumpers, and most of the

lenses are unique to the Type 34.

The Wilhelm Karmann factory as-

sembly line which assembled the

Type 34 also produced the VW-

Porsche 914 (known as Porsche

914 in the USA), the Type 34's re-

placement.

Karmann

Ghia TC As an alternative to the Type 34

Karmann-Ghia coupé, which

Volkswagen had introduced to Eu-

rope in 1961, Karmann-Ghia do

Brasil looked to Ghia in Turin for a

reworked version of the Type 14 at

the end of the 1960s. At the time

Ghia employed Giorgetto Giugiaro,

the famous Italian designer and he

was set to work on the new Brazili-

an Karmann Ghia. The result was

the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC

(Touring Coupé), internally known

as the Type 145, which was intro-

duced in 1970.

This was a roomy 2+2 coupe with

a modern and comfortable interior.

Underneath, it was similar to the

Type 14, although the platform of

the Volkswagen Variant was used

rather than that of the Volkswagen

Beetle. The main difference was

the engine: the Type 145 TC was

fitted with the 1584 cc flat-four air-

cooled boxer unit from the Type 3

instead of the 1192 cc unit of the

Type 14. The car had 65 hp

(48 kW) @ 4600 rpm and a top

speed of 86 mph

(138 km/h), compared to

the 34 hp (25 kW) and

72 mph (116 km/h) of the

Type 14.

18,119 TC models were

produced during its produc-

tion run from 1970 until

1976. It was offered only in

South America and was not

exported off the continent.

There is a prototype that is

part of the factory museum

collection of Karmann in

Osnabrück, Germany.

'V-Charge':

VW pushes

development of Automat-

ed Parking

and Charging

of Electric

Vehicles Parking spaces driven to fully

automatically

Electric vehicles charged auto-

matically

V-Charge places only minor de-

mands on car park infrastruc-

ture

Intelligent form of valet parking

Wolfsburg – Volkswagen AG as-

pires to holding the leading posi-

tion in the field of automated park-

ing. A look into the near future of

automated parking is given by 'V-

Charge', an EU research project, in

which six national and international

partners are jointly developing new

technologies. Its focus is on auto-

mating the search for a parking

space and on the charging of elec-

tric vehicles. The best part about it

is that the vehicle not only auto-

matically looks for an empty park-

ing space, but that it finds an emp-

ty space with charging infrastruc-

ture and inductively charges its

battery. Once the charging process

is finished, it automatically frees up

the charging bay for another elec-

tric vehicle and looks for a conven-

tional parking space. 'V-Charge'

stands for Valet Charge and is

pointing the way to the future of

automated parking.

In the USA especially, convenient

valet parking is a big hit: you pull

up in your car right outside your

destination, valet service personnel

park it for you and have it brought

around again as and when you

need it. There is no more time-

wasting search for a parking place.

The V-Charge project picks up on

this idea. Its development goal is

fully automated searching for a

parking space ('valet parking')

within defined zones, such as in

multi-storey car parks.

There are many scenarios that il-

lustrate the advantages of the V-

Charge concept. Take one practical

everyday example: a commuter

notices that he is possibly going to

be late and is thus running the risk

of missing an important meeting at

his company. With V-Charge he is

able to pull up right in front of the

main entrance, get out and estab-

lish the link to his vehicle via the

associated smartphone application.

Operating fully automatically, the

vehicle has a digital map relayed to

it and within the parking area or

multi-storey car park autonomous-

ly navigates to a parking space. If

it is an electric vehicle, the system

additionally prioritises a parking

bay with an automatic charging

facility. Pedestrians, cyclists and

other vehicles are identified by the

cameras and ultrasound sensors

integrated within the vehicle.

Therefore, the vehicle is allowed to

travel in so-called 'mixed traffic'.

The selected parking area neither

has to be an enclosed domain nor

is any complex technical equip-

ment required.

As the electric vehicle nears its

destination, the system recognises

via local sensors whether the allo-

cated parking space is taken. If it

is empty, the fully automatic park-

ing manoeuvre begins and posi-

tions the vehicle exactly above the

inductive charging spot. When the

charging process is complete, the

vehicle automatically moves to an-

other parking space, leaving the

charging station free for another

electric car. When the driver re-

turns to the multi-storey car park,

he calls the vehicle back to the

starting point via the V-Charge

app. The vehicle moves to the de-

fined pick-up location, with the

driver not needing to set foot in

the parking area or multi-storey

car park.

Taking the lead in the international

research consortium is the Swiss

Federal Institute of Technology

(ETH) in Zurich. It is responsible

for visual localisation, movement

planning and vehicle control

(Autonomous Systems Lab divi-

sion), camera calibration, 3D re-

construction from images and ob-

stacle detection (Computer Vision

and Geometry Lab division).

BraunschweigTechnical University

works on the issues of car park

management and the vehicle's

communication with the technical

surroundings (vehicle-to-

infrastructure'V2I'), Robert Bosch

GmbH contributes its expertise in

the field of sensor technology, Par-

ma University looks after object

recognition and Oxford University

handles the development of de-

tailed navigation maps of the park-

ing area (semantic mapping con-

cepts). As the sixth partner in the

consortium, Volkswagen is provid-

ing the platform equipment, safety

and control modules, as well as

systems for static monitoring of

surroundings, object recognition

and automated parking.

The test vehicle: a network of

technical sensory organs

The technical prerequisites largely

already exist. During the introduc-

tory stage, for instance, it was pos-

sible to utilise sensor and camera

technologies that are already being

used in today's production vehi-

cles. A dense network of sensory

devices enables autonomous oper-

ation of the V-Charge test vehicle,

which is based on a Volkswagen e

Golf1. Four wide- angle cameras

and two 3D cameras, twelve ultra-

sound sensors, digital maps and

the so- called 'Car2X' technology

for the vehicle's communication

with the infrastructure ensure that

the vehicle's surroundings are reli-

ably detected and recognised. Pe-

destrians, vehicles and obstacles

get identified, parking spaces rec-

ognised and measured and then

this stream of data is put together

in real timeto form an overall pic-

ture – the task that the tech-

nical 'sensory organs' have to fulfil

is complex and extremely varied.

As continual tests run as part of

the research project show, V-

Charge is already functional today.

GPS-independent indoor localisa-

tion, centimetre-exact parking

space measurement and 360-

degree recognition of surroundings

all function reliably, as do the sys-

tem's reactions to pedestrians and

vehicles and the way in which it

takes account of traffic moving in

line with or across the vehicle's

path.

2005: a Volkswagen Touareg called

'Stanley'makes the first move to-

wards autonomy

At Volkswagen automatic motoring

moved from being a vision to a

field of research at an early stage.

'Stanley' – a Touareg converted in

cooperation with Stanford Universi-

ty in California and the Volkswagen

Electronics Research Laboratory

(USA) into a laboratory that could

drive autonomously – was already

winning the Grand Challenge com-

petition for robot vehicles as far

back as 2005. The next stage of

development, in 2007, was the

Passat 'Junior', which even then

was finding its way through the big

-city jungle without a driver – and

doing so with such success that it

took second place in the Urban

Challenge for autonomous vehicles.

Given the working titles 'PAUL' and

'iCar', two further Passat research

vehicles also demonstrated their

autonomous capabilities that same

year. While, thanks to intelligent

parking assistance with no driver

involvement, 'PAUL' slips into spac-

es perpendicular to the carriage-

way, the 'intelligent car' makes life

easier for the driver in stop-and-go

situations and on long monotonous

journeys by automatically braking

and keeping the appropriate dis-

tance.

In 2011, the 'eT – follow me!' mi-

crovan was launched as the ideal

vehicle for delivery services. One

real-life scenario: If the driver

walks from house to house along a

street delivering letters, for exam-

ple, 'eT' follows him on quiet elec-

tric paws like a well-trained dog to

ensure his mailbag is constantly

replenished ('FollowMe' function) –

or stays on his spot like a good boy

until receiving the electronic 'come

to me' call.

Also taking to the stage of autono-

mous motoring in 2011 was the

'HAVE-IT' (Highly Automated Vehi-

cles for Intelligent Transport), a

Volkswagen AG contribution to the

research project of the same name

funded by the European Commis-

sion. The Wolfsburgengineers had

developed for the Passat Variant a

'temporary autopilot', which set the

best possible degree of automation

for driving on motorways and simi-

lar roads based on the driving situ-

ation, surroundings, the driver's

condition and the system status.

was already to celebrate ten million

vehicles in 1963. An incomparable

success story had started.

When the record of one million ve-

hicles was achieved on 5 August

1955, Volkswagen celebrated a

huge party. The Beetle (in the

meantime known as the “Oval”

model) and the Transporter, still

constructed in Wolfsburg back

then, comprised the model range.

Additionally, the Beetle convertible,

manufactured at Karmann.

The star of the anniversary cele-

bration at the works stadium was a

golden 30 PS Beetle, gemmed with

rhinestones on the chrome parts

and the typical oval-shaped rear

windscreen. Thousands of employ-

ees and their guests celebrated

and enjoyed a show with presenta-

tions from all export countries.

Only a few people believed in such

success back at the end of 1945

when production started. However,

there were sufficient visionaries

amongst the workers and manag-

ers who gave their all for “their”

product. It took ten years to crack

the first million – of which the ma-

jority was the Beetle (Type 1) and

its convertible spin-off and the re-

mainder the Transporter (Type 2).

This was augmented by the Kar-

mann-Ghia at the end of 1955 and

the “Large Beetle” 1500 (Type 3)

followed suit in 1961. In the mean-

time, export was in full swing, with

long delivery times for the Beetle.

As a consequence, production was

boosted and the tenth million al-

ready achieved in 1963.

Between 1973 and 1975, the Bee-

tle and its derivates were super-

seded with the modern, front-

wheel drive vehicles Polo, Golf, Sci-

rocco and Passat. The success sto-

ry continued with an ever-

expanding range of models. Today,

Volkswagen has a global standing

– the overall number of vehicles

produced by the Group lies in ex-

cess of 200 million.

next round in Germany presents

them with their first opportunity to

secure a third World Rally Champi-

onship title in a row. In the Manu-

facturers’ Championship,

Volkswagen – under the watchful

eye of Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer,

Volkswagen Board Member for

Technical Development – extended

its lead to 116 points, giving the

Wolfsburg-based manufacturer a

comfortable advantage going into

the final five rounds in Germany,

Australia, France, Spain and Great

Britain.

However, Volkswagen did suffer

one set-back in Finland: Andreas

Mikkelsen/Volkswagen Ola Fløene

(N/N) came off the road and rolled

their car several times at high

speed on the fifth of 20 special

stages. They emerged from the Po-

lo R WRC unhurt, but the damage

to the car was too severed to be

able to repair the car on-site and

rejoin the race under Rally 2 regu-

lations. The safety cage withstood

the enormous force of the crash

undamaged, and the chassis is al-

ready being prepared for the Rally

Australia.

Victory.

Win number two of the season for

Latvala/Anttila, their third together

at the Rally Finland, was a victory

for pure willpower. After a disap-

pointing start to the 2015 season,

the duo produced its strongest per-

formance of the year, setting the

fastest time on half of the 20 spe-

cial stages to finish ahead of their

team-mates by what is a relatively

large lead for the Rally Finland. Fol-

lowing the 14th victory of their ca-

reer, Latvala/Anttila can confidently

call themselves high-speed special-

ists: in 2015 they won the fastest

gravel rally ever in Finland, whilst

victory was also theirs at the fast-

est asphalt rally of all time in

France in 2014. The WRC round in

Finland marked co-driver Miikka

Anttila’s 162nd start. This saw him

pass his idol Luis Moya, who is also

part of the Volkswagen team and

has 161 WRC starts to his name.

Superlative.

highest average speed ever in the

history of the World Rally Champi-

onship. This remarkable figure saw

the Rally Finland smash its own

previous record from 2012, when

an average speed of 122.89 km/h

was achieved. The Rally Finland

now occupies nine places in the list

of the top ten fastest rallies of all

time – including the top four.

Car.

The Polo R WRC is not only “Das

Auto” of the past two and a half

seasons, but also “Das Auto” for

high speeds. The World Rally Car

from Wolfsburg has so far claimed

29 of a possible 34 victories and 56

of a possible 97 podium finishes.

The 318-hp four-wheel drive pow-

erhouse remains unbeaten at the

high-speed events in Poland and

Finland. The success of the Polo R

WRC is not only down to excellent

driving and the efforts of the engi-

neers in the engine department,

but also the guys in the chassis de-

partment. With all the long and

high jumps at the Rally Finland, the

driver must be perfectly in tune

with all the specialist areas.

“Ouninpohja”.

It is one of the iconic stages in the

World Rally Championship:

“Ouninpohja”. In the world of cir-

cuit racing, the Nürburgring-

Nordschleife is regarded as the

greatest test of man and machine.

The rallying equivalent is this flat-

out stage through the Finnish for-

ests around Jyväskylä. Jari-Matti

Latvala and Miikka Anntila took a

big step towards victory on this

stage in 2015. The 400th stage win

of his career saw “JML” move into

the lead. He also clocked the fast-

est speed of 132.18 km/h on the

2015 variant of this famous stage.

“Myhinpää”.

The fastest power stage of all time:

Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia won “Myhinpää” with an

average speed of 135.25 km/h to

claim the 123rd, 124th and 125th

bonus points for Volkswagen driv-

ers since 2013. Jari-Matti Latvala

and Miikka Anttila added a further

two points, taking Volkswagen’s

tally to 127 points – more than any

other manufacturer. This was the

23rd power stage success for

Ogier/Ingrassia, and the 26th for

the Volkswagen team.

Championship.

As well as Latvala/Anttila, the big

winners at the Rally Finland were

World Championship leaders

Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia. The double world champi-

ons now hold an 89-point lead go-

ing into Volkswagen’s home event

in Germany, giving them their first

‘match point’ in Trier. Only eight

driver/co-driver pairs could still

mathematically prevent them from

winning a third title. The best-

placed of these are the new second

-place duo in the World Champion-

ship, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka

Anttila, third-placed Mads Østberg/

Jonas Andersson (N/S, Citroën, 98

points back), fourth-placed Andre-

as Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (99 points

back) and fifth-placed Thierry Neu-

ville/Nicolas Gilsoul (B/B, Hyundai,

112 points back).

Quotes after day three of the Rally

Finland

Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo

R WRC #1

“It was an incredible duel. I think

we put on a great show for the

fans. Congratulations to Jari-Matti

and Miikka. They were really strong

all weekend. I said before the rally

that Jari-Matti would be the man to

beat at his home rally. As always

Julien and I did our best, but, like

last year, the two of them were

just too good here in Finland. De-

spite this I am more than happy

with second place, as we have ex-

tended our lead in the overall

standings. Even without the fine

second place, the Rally Finland was

once again a fantastic experience.

As a driver, you don’t feel any hap-

pier or any more adrenalin than on

the super-fast stages through the

Finnish forests.”

Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo

R WRC #2

“I cannot express how happy I am!

My motivation coming into this ral-

ly and my desire to win were im-

mense. After all the ups and downs

I’ve been through this season,

this victory means a huge

amount. I would like to thank the

entire team for its great work.

They have always believed in me,

even in times when things have

not run so smoothly. As ex-

pected, today was a real roller-

coaster and a perfect finale to

the 2015 Rally Finland. Thank

you very much to the fans for the

support in the service park and

along the route. I just want to

enjoy the moment now!”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen

Polo R WRC #9

“We had set our sights very high

for the Rally Finland. Above all, we

wanted to defend second place in

the World Championship – and to

extend our advantage if possible.

Unfortunately, however, today was

not our day and we crashed out.

My pace notes were a little too op-

timistic on the fifth stage. I lifted in

a long left-hander with a slight

crest, which can be taken flat-out

in perfect conditions. However, that

did not prove to be enough. We ran

out of road and rolled several

times. Fortunately the Polo R WRC

is a very solid car and nothing seri-

ous happened to us. We are obvi-

ously very disappointed that the

damage was too great to be able to

repair it on-site. We will now look

ahead and turn our full attention to

Volkswagen’s home round in Ger-

many.”

Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport

Director

“What a fantastic rally from Jari-

Matti Latvala, Miikka Anttila,

Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia. They were in a class of

their own. Jari-Matti and Miikka are

without any doubt the ‘Kings of

Speed’, as nobody has ever been

as fast as them on either asphalt or

gravel. Sébastien Ogier and Julien

Ingrassia have their first opportuni-

ty to wrap up the World Champion-

ship at the coming round in Ger-

many. Anyone who knows them

will also know that they do not like

finishing second, and will be doing

everything in their power to finish

on top again in Germany. Although

Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene

had to retire following their crash

on Friday, we are still extremely

happy. We remain undefeated in

Finland – the fastest rally on the

calendar.”
