Hi All,

The National Bug In 2012 is on at Easter. I would like to take this opportunity to say good luck with the

event to our fellow enthusiasts in South Australia and I hope all goes as planned and organised.

I personally can not make the long trip, however we will have WA VW Club members travelling the Null-

arbor and their presence will be known! Have a safe and pleasant trip to everyone making the jour-

ney. Be sure to follow Rod McSwain's updates on our club forum. A full event report will be in next

months ViaWest including many pictures (snap, snap).

Work on our Club website and forum is still underway behind the scenes. It will be off-line for a couple

days next month for the upgrades and changes to be implemented. We have scheduled this for week

days - please be patient. An announcement will go up on the forum with exact dates in the lead up to

the temporary down time. I am looking forward to seeing the new design and changes up and running

for all of us to use.

Auto One Classic Car Show is on next month. It seems that we have an opportunity to camp the night

before so consider a night under stars………All the best

Auto One Classic Car Show 2012

Sunday 22 April 2012

The Auto One Classic Car Show run by the Council of Motoring Clubs (CMC) will be on again this year at Whiteman Park, on Sunday 22 April. It is on this year in April and from then on in April, as people have said that March is too hot.

Access is from Lord Street, Beech-boro Road North and Marshall Road via Dulwich Road. We expect to have the usual spot and I have asked for room for 30 cars, so let's make this a big one.

The gates will open at 6.30 a.m. on

Sunday

You must have a free ticket to enter. They will become available at a later date from the VW Club – contact will be me, Richard Hines phone: (08)

9342 8703.

NO Vehicles will be allowed in on Sunday after 9 am. NO vehicle move-ments between 9 am and 3.30 pm on Sunday. Once you are in you will be locked in until 3.30 p.m. This is for public liability insurance reasons and it will be rigidly enforced. If you want to leave early, then park in the public car parks.

Overnight camping is permitted on

Saturday 21st.

Camping is designed for security, not a night out, so please be cool about it. Because of past unruly behaviour the rules will be rigidly enforced. A call out of Whiteman Park security will entail a $150 fee. That will be transfered to the club and we will extract it from the campers.

Once in you must remain in. Other-

wise park in the public car park. No noise after 10 pm. No tents erected before 6 pm. Everything packed away by 7.30 am on Sunday. Drive at walk-ing pace only.

Showers will be available in the Vil-lage Mall on the west wall of work-shop 2. Toilets will be unlocked. $1 BBQs are available. People who wish to camp overnight, keep a look out for further information.

Spread the word and let's make this a memorable event.

CLUB RUN CLUB RUN -- APRIL 2012APRIL 2012

Hello members, this is an

important notice for you...

Your Volkswagen Club in conjunction with the Council of Motoring Clubs is holding the Annual Quiz Nite for

2012.

To hold a Quiz Nite takes a lot of plan-ning and involvement of members to make it happen as seamless as possi-ble.

The date is Friday 27th July and we have booked the Perth Soccer Club for the event.

To make it a successful Quiz Nite, we need your participation as members in the form of…

1. Helpers on the night...many hands make light work!

2. Prizes on the night...we are looking for donations of goods and services to be used for raffles, competitions and the Quiz Nite winners.

You may be able to get donations and sponsorship from your employ-er, if self employed, you may be able to donate directly or if you know somebody that knows some-

body...all donations help.

Donations can be in the form of goods such as caps and shirts, car parts; or as services such as car detail, engine service, membership to a club etc.

They do not have to be VW based as all car clubs attend these Quiz Nites.

If you have been to a Quiz Nite, they are great fun...the VW Club of WA has come second in recent years...now we will be on the other side of questions and competitions on the night.

All enquiries or to arrange a donation, contact Richard

Hines on 9342 8703.

Disclaimer The Robert Shannon Foundation has no connec-tion with the Shannons Insurance organisation. All correspondence related to the Robert Shan-non Foundation should be sent to the Robert Shannon Foundation through the relevant State Council

Robert Shannon

Foundation The Robert Shannon Foundation was established in 2003 to perpetuate the memory of Robert Shannon, founder of Shannons Insurance, who died unex-pectedly in March 2000.

Robert was an avid classic car enthusi-ast, who especially enjoyed his 1930 Invicta S Type. He was a strong sup-porter of the historic motoring move-ment and was concerned that it was not attracting enough younger people, particularly in the areas of the preser-vation and restoration of classic vehi-cles.

AIM

After the success of the Shannons 2001 National Motoring Tour, the Aus-tralian Historic Motoring Federation (AHMF) established the Robert Shan-non Foundation. The AHMF is the na-tional body representing classic and historic vehicle clubs in all states and territories. The purpose of the Founda-tion is to encourage people under the age of 30 to become involved in the restoration and preservation of veter-an, vintage, post-vintage, historic 50’s, historic 60’ and historic 70’s vehicles up to 30 years old.

The Foundation may: - help with the purchase of specialist tools or equipment - assist with the actual cost of restora-tion work - contribute toward TAFE or other fees - contribute toward any project consid-ered worthwhile by the Trustees.

ELIGIBILITY

Any person or group of people under the age of thirty years and engaged in studying automotive restoration and preservation or actively working on historic vehicles is eligible to nominate for a grant.

APPLICATION FOR GRANT

Before completing an application form an individual or group must seek the support of a local vehicle club. This club must be affiliated with the appro-priate state council. The supporting club must complete the relevant sec-tion of the application form and forward the application to its state council for endorsement.

Submissions for a Grant must be lodged with the AHMF by 1st June each year, State Councils will require the submission to be in their hands by the 1st May each year. Grant appli-cants will need to ensure that applica-tions are in the hands of their support-ing club in sufficient time for the sup-porting club to consider the application and forward it to the state council by the 1st May

APPLICATION for Robert Shannon

Foundation

GRANT... ANYONE in the Volkswagen Club of WA (Inc) under the age of thirty years of age may apply for a grant to assist their restoration of a vehicle (car, truck, bus, motorbike, tractor etc)

Please see the application for a grant on the opposite page. Alternatively an application can be printed off the Aus-

tralian Historic Motoring Federation Inc. (AHMF) website at...

http://www.ahmf.org.au/Robert_Shannon_Foundation.htm

If you are interested...

1. An application needs to be with the Secretary of the Volkswagen Club of WA (Inc) by last mail on Friday

27th April 2012.

2. The VW Club will forward any appli-cation/s to the Secretary of the Council of Motoring Clubs of WA Inc (CMC) before Tuesday 1st May

2012.

3. The CMC must have the application submitted to the foundation by the

Friday 1st

of June 2012.

The AHMF General Meeting is to be held in Bendigo Victoria on the week-end of 17-19 August 2012. The Robert Shannon Foundation grants will be announced at that meeting.

There were no grants filed from WA last year, and to date there are none for 2012. There’s at least $1000 going begging to some other state if a West Aussie doesn’t get an application in.

Remember…

If you are a member of the VW Club.

Under the age of thirty years.

Restoring a vehicle at least 30 years old.

...get your application in ASAP.

New Engine

for Multivan A fuel-efficient and yet powerful pet-rol engine is being added to the

Multivan model range.

The 2.0-litre TSI350 combines innova-tive technologies such as turbocharg-ing with direct fuel injection, four-valve technology and intercooling to create a product unique in its market segment.

The 2.0-litre turbo engine with inter-cooling produces 150 kW and a maxi-mum torque of 350 Newton metres from just 1500 rpm. Combined fuel consumption is 10.1 litres per 100 kilo-metres which equals CO2 emissions of 236 g/km.

The 2.0-litre TSI350 utilises the ad-vantages of homogenous direct fuel injection and combines this with the powerful benefits of turbocharging. This produces dynamic results such as an outstanding torque level and excel-lent responsiveness.

The Multivan TSI350 features the same equipment as the TDI400 mod-els in either Comfortline or Highline and is available with seven-speed DSG. Pricing starts from $54,990* for Multivan TSI350 Comfortline and $71,990* for Multivan TSI350 Highline.

* Prices are manufacturer list prices only, for the drive away price please contact your local au-thorised Volkswagen dealer.

Amarok Canyon customised for

‘freestyle kayaking’

Geneva concept illustrates versatili-

ty of successful Amarok pick-up

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting an extreme version of the successful Amarok pick-up at the Ge-neva International Motor Show in the shape of its Amarok Canyon concept vehicle. Specially configured for the popular extreme sport of ‘freestyle kayaking’, this impressive show car illustrates how versatile pick-up config-urations can be created.

Picture the scene: it’s early on Satur-day morning, the weekend is young, the air is fresh, and the last remaining snow drifts melt into the mountain riv-ers that flow over their verdant green banks. It’s time for action; the two rac-ing kayaks are quickly loaded and se-curely strapped to the cargo bed of the Amarok Canyon, and they’re off. First, a quick drive on the motorway and then over twisty mountain roads. The next few kilometres take the truck over

(Continued on page 22)

a muddy forest track, and the last 500 metres over a trail with large chunks of broken rock; but thanks to the off-road capabilities of this Amarok pick-up, the destination – a fast-moving white water creek - has been reached. Quickly, they grab their carbon fibre kayaks and gear – helmet, spray skirt and paddle from the cargo box – and the boats are launched into the swirling waters for a white water rodeo. With power and mastery over body and boat!, a pair of figures make their way out into the waves – this is a high-exertion battle with the elements, where the stress of everyday life washes away. This is exactly how a perfect day might begin for a freestyle kayaker. This type of competition represents one of the most extreme forms of water sports, and it is enjoying increasing popularity.

All aspects of the Amarok Canyon con-cept being shown in Geneva are de-signed to meet the requirements of this extreme sport – from the pick-up’s run-ning gear to details of the cargo box. “We are using this extreme concept to illustrate one of the many diverse uses of the Amarok. By tuning its design to an extreme sport, we are bringing the original DNA of the Amarok into focus,” emphasises Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, spokesperson for the Board of Man-agement for the Volkswagen Brand and Head of Development at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The concept vehicle is significantly taller and wider than the production

Amarok, and its colour is also more exotic. The pick-up’s body, which shimmers in the three-layer effects of its bright ‘Baladi Orange’ paint, was raised by 40 mm with a body lift kit; when the tyres are included, the con-cept is a full 85 mm taller than the pro-duction model. The freestyle pick-up also has auxiliary headlights mounted on its roof. Providing additional visual accents are the smoked rear lights and the colour-contrasting underbody pro-tection. Two electrically deployed tread plates make it easy for all occupants to step into and out of the vehicle, de-spite the raised ride height. The tread plates were designed to be visually unobtrusive, and they retract when the vehicle is moving to maintain the standard Amarok Canyon’s traditional high level of off-road capability.

As noted, the concept car’s width has also increased to accommodate out-door activities. The wheel housings were widened by 35 mm on each side to make room for the big AT tyres, size 275/65 R 18, mounted on ‘Durban’ type wheels painted in ‘High Gloss Adamantium Dark’.

The two carbon fibre kayaks are se-curely mounted to the cargo floor: at the rear, the floor is designed with two formed cut-outs with soft padding, while the kayak bows are mounted on a styling bar in ‘High Gloss Adamanti-um Dark’ with straps for firmly securing the boats. The paddles are firmly latched in place on the inside surface of the easy-to-operate tailgate, ready to grab. All other gear – white water helmets, flotation devices and rafting shoes – are also stowed securely: the

helmets in nets on the front wall of the cargo bed, and the rest of the gear in smaller boxes that can be locked with watertight lids.

Inside, a special colour scheme was used with many details and new ac-cents. The leather seats have two-tone styling: the seating surfaces are in ‘sterling’ colour, while the head re-straints and side supports are elegant-ly offset in ‘adamant’ colour. The deco-rative seams on the seats take on the orange-red colour of the body. This colour is also reflected in numerous other details such as in the seams of the three-spoke steering wheel and gear shift lever trim, the safety belts and the air outlets. Housed in a cowl in the cockpit are three auxiliary instru-ments. They show the climbing and tilt angles of the Amarok, which gives the driver key information for extra safety on extreme off-road drives.

To enable maximum off-road capabil-ity, the Amarok concept vehicle is pow-ered by a torque-strong 2.0 TDI biturbo with 132 kW, which provides a maxi-mum torque of 400 Newton metres over a speed range of 1,500-2,250 rpm. The switchable 4MOTION all-wheel drive system – together with a reduction gearbox and differential lock at the rear axle – ensures effective power transfer to the wheels even in the toughest off-road conditions.

Volkswagen Champions to

Start in

Formula 1 Volkswagen Power as a career boost-er: When the new Formula 1 season opens in Australia on Sunday the grid will include two up-and-coming young drivers who managed to make their way into the class at the pinnacle of motorsport with engines from Wolfs-burg.

By clinching the title in the British For-mula 3 Championship the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (2009) and the Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne (2010) made decisive upward moves on the career ladder. The two Toro Rosso racers are not the only talents though

who managed to ascend to a top rac-ing category thanks to their successes with Volkswagen.

“Formula 3 remains one of the most important junior classes in motorsport. The sophisticated technology, complex vehicle set-up and development plus the high competitiveness make Formu-la 3 an ideal talent incubator,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “Volkswagen has a long, suc-cessful tradition in Formula 3. In the 1980s and 90s, racers like Win-kelhock, Schumacher or Kristensen laid the foundations for their successful careers with Volkswagen Power while today Ricciardo, Vergne or Mortara are stepping into the spotlight. We’re tak-ing our role as a promoter of young racers very seriously and are continu-ing our commitment in Formula 3 – for instance with completely new ap-proaches such as the push-to-pass system in the German ATS Formula 3 Cup that will make more overtaking manoeuvres and even more thrilling races possible.”

Formula 3 exploits as a supreme refer-ence for moving up

Daniel Ricciardo (22) and Jean-Eric Vergne (21) in the Carlin Volkswagen customer team dominated the British Formula 3 Championship, thus impressively recom-mending themselves for an ascent into higher catego-ries – Ricciardo took six wins in 2009, and Vergne as many as 13 a year later. In

2011, the third consecutive British champion with Volkswagen Power was Felipe Nasr (Brazil), who in future will be on the grid of the GP2 Series as part of the Formula 1 supporting pro-gramme. Although the Dane Kevin Magnussen (19) had to admit defeat to his team-mate and brand colleague Nasr in the battle for the title he is now directly supported by McLaren and scheduled to take his first Formula 1 test later this year.

The line of successful climbers is much longer though. The Italian Ed-oardo Mortara (25), after winning the title in the Formula 3 Euro Series and

scoring two victories at the famous Macau Grand Prix switched to Audi in the DTM, and is regarded as a future candidate for the title by many experts. His former team-mate in Volkswagen’s Signature customer team, Marco Witt-mann (22) from Markt Erlbach (Germany), as a DTM test driver and factory driver in GT racing managed the leap into the professional camp as well. In this category, he might be meeting another former team-mate – the Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup title winner with Volkswagen, is competing for the WRT Audi team in the FIA GT1 World Championship.

Cross Coupé from VW

Consumes 1.8

l/100 km The Cross Coupé Concept is powered by an alliance of a turbodiesel direct-injection engine (TDI) and two electric motors. Its combined fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is a sensationally low of 1.8 l/100 km. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km. Noteworthy here is the fact that the Cross Coupé is a powerful SUV with a top speed of 220 km/h, 225 kW of power (system power) and a kerb weight of 1,858 kg. Volkswagen is presenting the concept with a TDI plug-in hybrid in a world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Volkswagen's Golf 7 Spy

Shots by: Jamie Vondruska

Volkswagen's Golf 7 will officially be shown at the Paris Auto Show in Sep-tember, so final mules and test vehi-cles are out and about. Spy photogra-phers are snapping up pictures and while we still can't tell an awful lot from these shots, we know based on the MQB platform we viewed that the wheelbase is slightly longer, the width is up a bit and the front over hangs have been reduced. People inside VW that have seen the Golf 7 say that it looks great, particularly the GTI.

Until the car gets introduced though, here are a few shots to tease you a bit…

Polo BlueGT The new Polo BlueGT stands out in its ability to combine superior dynamic performance with extreme fuel-efficiency. The technical highlight of the progressive compact car is the cyl-inder deactivation system, which is being introduced for the first time in a Volkswagen – also known as active cylinder management or ACT. The sys-tem was realised with the new 1.4-litre TSI of the Polo BlueGT. The torque-strong TSI develops a power output of 103 kW / 140 PS, yet has a combined fuel consumption of just 4.7 l/100 km/h* (equivalent to 108 g/km* CO2). If the Polo BlueGT is ordered with the optional 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), fuel consumption drops further to 4.5 l/100 km* – and, bear in mind, this is a petrol, not a diesel (105 g/km* CO2). Nonetheless, this car, with a top speed of 210 km/h, accelerates to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. This uncom-mon coexistence of efficiency and dy-namic performance is enabled by the systematic interplay of ACT, downsiz-ing (reduced engine displacement plus direct injection and charging) and BlueMotion Technology (Stop/Start system, battery regeneration). As such, the Polo BlueGT closes the gap be-tween the Polo 1.2 TSI (77 kW / 105 PS) and the Polo GTI (132 kW / 180 PS). The new car will already on the market in July. New generation of engines. The 1.4 TSI in the Polo BlueGT is the top en-gine of the entirely new EA211 series

of petrol engines. These petrol en-gines and the EA288 series diesel en-gines, which are also new, are techno-logical pillars of the future Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). One proper-ty shared by all of these engines is an identical mounting position in the car – and indeed across vehicle classes and brands.

Fuel savings by ACT. Even before the MQB is introduced, Polo BlueGT buy-ers will get to enjoy the new high-tech TSI with cylinder deactivation. Volkswagen is the first carmaker to introduce active cylinder management as a fuel-saving technology in smaller engines – they were previously only known in larger eight or twelve cylinder units. Shutting down the second and third cylinders under low and medium load states reduces fuel consumption

in the EU driving cycle by about 0.4 l/100 km. In constant speed driving at 50 km/h in third or fourth gear, fuel savings are as much as one litre per 100 km. But even when driving at 70 km/h in fifth gear, fuel consumption is still reduced by 0.7 l/100 km. ACT mode of operation. ACT becomes active at engine speeds from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm, and at torque outputs from 25 to approx. 100 Nm – a broad swath

of the operating map that includes nearly 70 per cent of all driving states in the EU driving cycle! When the driv-er presses the accelerator pedal, the two cylinders are imperceptibly reac-tivated. The high efficiency certainly does not come at the price of a high level of smooth engine running: even with two cylinders, the excellently bal-anced 1.4 TSI of the Polo BlueGT runs just as quietly with as little vibration as it does when all four combustion chambers are active. All mechanical switchover actions are completed with-in one half of a camshaft revolution; this only takes between 13 and 36 mil-liseconds, depending on engine speed. The transitions are smoothed by supporting interventions to the igni-tion and throttle valve. Ingenious: thanks to an accelerator pedal sensor and intelligent monitoring software, the system can also detect non-uniform driving profiles – such as while driving through traffic or in a sporty manner when driving on a country road. In such cases, cylinder shutoff is disa-bled. The driver is informed whether two or four cylinders are active by an indication in the multifunction display located between the speedometer and tachometer. ACT camshaft adjustment. To further reduce emission and fuel consumption values and improve torque in the lower engine speed range, the intake cam-shaft was designed to be adjustable over a range of 50 degree crank angle on all EA211 engines; in the 1.4 TSI of the Polo BlueGT, an exhaust camshaft adjuster is added. It adjusts to the de-sired spread of control times, thereby ensuring more spontaneous response from low revs; at the same time, it also improves torque at high revs.

Exterior of the Polo BlueGT. The new Volkswagen is clearly distin-guished both inside and out. From the outside, it is the new 17-inch alloy wheels with spoke styling, GT signatures at the front and rear (and additional ‘BLUEMOTION’ at the rear) and new tailpipe trim that are identifying characteristics of the Polo BlueGT. In addition, nu-merous standard features were adapted from the Polo GTI or the Polo BlueMotion. GTI features are the rear spoiler, rear bumper with diffuser, front bumper and fog lights including daytime running lights. BlueMotion elements are the side sills and the front rain channels (outside on the wind-screen). The Polo BlueGT is also upgraded by a black painted radia-

tor grille, R-line ventilation screen in the bumper and

black door mirrors. Having a posi-tive effect on aerodynamics are the Polo’s 15 mm lower ride height and special underbody trim.

Interior of the Polo BlueGT. Interi-or features were upgraded by ex-tended functionality of the multi-function display (ACT message and tyre pressure), the GTI instru-ments, a cruise control system, black roofliner and black pillar trim in GTI style, vanity and interior lights tuned to match, a leather-trimmed sport steering wheel with ‘BlueGT’ emblem, sport seats in front with newly designed trim (fabric type and colour) as well as various chrome surrounds.
