  2. 2. Welcome to VDIS10017 the Consumer and theDesigner. No doubt you have arrived at this presentationvia our online Campus (the left hand image above) and somy aim is to now lead you through our expectations for thissubject and the term of study.
  3. 3. Each lecture will be in two parts, a short Video explanationand a longer text lecture in the form of a slide show. Viewthem both, consider their contents and then enter theforum, take part in the discussions, and make commentsand watch and be involved as the discourse flows.
  4. 4. On the left hand side of the screen are menus that will takeyou to different aspects of the class and they are selfexplanatory; lectures, assessment tasks, subject outlinesand so on. The forum is the place where you will finddiscussions about the various projects, tasks and ideas andI encourage you to always subscribe to the threads andbecome involved in the conversations.
  5. 5. Flying Over Las VegasStephano MarzanoAnd overview of consumer behaviourA lecture by Professor Ron Newman
  6. 6. The first lecture in this subject; Flying over Las Vegasfocuses on the role of the designer in the community andwhat drives consumer behaviour in the market place. Wewill review a conference paper presented in 1993 byStephano Marzano, which deeply influenced the waydesigners viewed their role.
  7. 7. As I said earlier you will also be able to access the subjectoutline and it contains the week by week guide that alertsyou to our expectations of your research, enquiry, assessment tasks, design projects, essays, presentationsand so on.... Download this document and use it as yourconstant companion guiding as to what is expected of you.
  8. 8. Each week there will be minor and major tasks to becomeinvolved in and my recommendation is that you always planto spend some hours working within the subject andengaging in the tasks and the discussions. We at Virtu willkeep the load sensible, but remember that the week byweek tasks are designed to progress your learning at anunderstandable rate.
  9. 9. The second lecture will talk about motivation, as well asintrinsic and extrinsic influences on our behavior: why dowe respond the way we do to the design ofgoods, communications and services. The lecture willexplore the thought processes behind our decision makingprocesses as consumers.
  10. 10. Two images with motivational value will be shown duringthe lecture and a mini project will be set where studentsare asked to find an image they believe is motivating andto use that image along with a maximum of eight words tocreate a motivational poster. This mini project is due atthe end of week 3.
  11. 11. The third lecture will talk about Consumer Research andthe Design Process and will inform students about theissues inherent in consumer research and how theseissues are addressed by professionals in the research anddesign disciplines.
  12. 12. In week 4 the first assessment task is due and the secondtask will be posted and discussed. This second projectwill focus on a case study on IKEA furniture consideringtheir unique selling points and brand equity.
  13. 13. Marketing Concepts the fourth lecture of VDIS10017 theConsumer and the Designer. This lecture will examineMarketing theories as they apply to designers. It isimportant that designers understand these theories andpractices because in the most part designers are workingdirectly with or for marketing professionals.
  14. 14. And finally the fifth lecture will talk about Emergent DesignMethodologies and Ideas. I will talk about the earliest of thedesign practitioners and about what they thought, throughto more recent thinking and tender some of my own ideasof where we will go in the future. Consider this lecture asyou understand how to undertake the last project, bringingideas such as Parkour to a community.
