Heritage Committee News Rev Richard (Dick) Udy, younger brother of Gloster, visited us recently for the Inter-faith Prayer Service and subsequently presented our Heritage Committee with some items from Gloster's personal research collection. These will be important additions to our archives. Richard's long career included time in the airforce, stints as a missionary in Fiji and in country NSW - and many years of inspirational leadership at the Dept. of Christian Citizenship, including advocacy efforts on behalf of indigenous groups. Richard retired in 1984 but remains very active in his support of mission and inter-cultural/ inter-faith ministry. Please note that in 2016, we will be installing a plaque in Leigh Memorial in tribute to Gloster's many contributions. The date of this special event will be advised closer to the time and Richard has been invited to attend.

Book - inc. Leigh Memorial Stained Glass Windows - Our Committee recently received the gift of a very unique book by Ms. Karla Whitmore about Sydney's pioneer stained glass artisans: John Falconer and Frederick Ashwin. Included in the book are some of our oldest Leigh Memorial windows which were created by Ashwin and are widely considered to be very special examples of late 19th century Australian church architecture/ arts and crafts. We have ordered an additional copy of the book for our library. Many thanks have been expressed to Karla for her interest in our church and its heritage.

Mark 10:17-31

17 And going on the way, a person ran up and knelt before Jesus and questioned him, “Good teacher, what must I do in order that I might inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good except one – God. 19 You know the commandments. ‘Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honour your father and mother.” 20 And he said to Jesus, “Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell all that you have and give it to the poor, and you shall have riches in heaven, and come follow me.” 22 But becoming sad at the word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 And Jesus, looking around, said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter into the kingdom of God.” 24 But the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus again answering, said to them, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God. 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the hole of a needle than a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.” 26 But they were exceedingly astonished, saying among themselves, “And who can be saved?” 27 Jesus, looking at them, said, With people it is impossible, but not with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we left all things, and we have followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left their house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields because of me and because of the Gospel 30 who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 And many who are first shall be last, and the last shall be first. (Translation by Keith Hamilton)

Parramatta shooting I was shocked, as many were, at the news of the shooting deaths in Parramatta the other week. That it happened in Australia, in Parramatta, on a street that we know well, adds to that shock. Julie and I were in the USA where on almost the same day the 294th mass shooting of 2015 took place in which a person with 14 guns, many automatic, and a cache of ammunition shot dead 9 people and seri-ously wounded 9 others. The contrast puts the Parramatta shooting into per-spective, even though it won’t bring comfort to two families. It was a criminal act. There will also be social causes. Acknowledging we have a problem is a start. Here is a 15 year old, and others, searching for identity and meaning to life, and finding it in destructive ways. For me it points to the need for all people to lean closer together rather than pull away. We need cross-cultural relationships. The interfaith peace service is one. Developing relationships with the Mosque and Arthur Phillip High are others. Befriending our physical neighbours are others. We can all do our part.

Reflection Julie and I happened to be in the USA when the Pope made his historic visit. There was much interest and debate surrounding as to what he would or did say, and what his lasting influence might be. This ranged from one person declaring, “If the Pope wants to speak about climate change he should do that in his own time,” as if the Pope clocks off at 5 pm! Others wore t-shirts that read “I walk with Francis.” We were in the crowd when the Pope visited St Patrick’s cathedral in New York. On the following Sunday when we visited Riverside Cathedral, affiliated with both the Baptist and United Church of Christ, the Senior Minister Amy Butler, and theological thinker, Brian McLaren, discussed the Pope’s visit, his speeches and sermons, and his lasting influence. Amy exclaimed she was surprised by her feelings about the Pope; she was deeply moved by his expression of humble Christianity and his call for such things as more work needed on climate change, and the welcome of refugees. Brian McLaren reiterated the Pope’s message that love of God and neighbour includes love of God’s creation. Earlier we watched his welcome to the Whitehouse. Washington streets are constantly full of the wail of sirens of motorcades of ‘important’ people. A large crowd of invited guests had been assembled at the Whitehouse for the Pope’s arrival. A large flashy car was offered, but the Pope chose to ride in a small Fiat. The contrast of the guest of honour arriving in car dwarfed by accompanying the secret service cars was not missed by America. Many times in the course of his visit adulation was heaped upon him, but the Pope always looked disinterested in such palaver. However he became animated when he was with people, even visiting a prison and sitting down with the inmates. The expression of his faith is compelling. By contrast the rich man of Mark is marked not so much by his riches but by his self-importance. Jesus was on to his type when the young man called Jesus “good Teacher.” The word “good” used here is the word meaning morally good. Of course, he is correct that Jesus is morally good, and speaking beyond what he knew that Jesus has the morality of God. It is just that the young man is trying to suggest he too is morally good, and on the strength of his morality, he should have the kind of life that Jesus offers. But Jesus speaks about something else. We can no more save ourselves than we can pull ourselves up by our boot straps. Further, it is by giving of ourselves in humble service to others that we find life. Perhaps impossible to self-serving people, but not to those who follow in the way of Jesus. Blessings, Keith Hamilton

WESTMEAD CONGREGATION

What a wonderful way to spend a very hot day- out on the water on the Hawkesbury river postman. It was a fantastic day and except for a very hot bus trip, we were more than satisfied with good companions, fine food, brilliant views and an increased appreciation of Australia and our history along the Hawkesbury.

Special thanks to Jean for organizing us and for Parriss our wonderful driver. There were some added extras - the drips from the air conditioner giving Geoff some extra cooling, the rock cave John found, the sunburn and windswept look May experienced, the memories Kevin and Jean recalled and a great chance to get to know each other even more.

The residents and staff of Mayflower nursing home were very grateful for their new crocheted and knitted blankets. A special service for the blessing of the blankets happened on the 8th October and Rev Christine was very happy to be able to attend. We are starting to collect things for our Munch’n’Brunch (mini- fete) on 7th November. Please book the date and we look forward to providing food, fun and a good morning out! And speaking of collecting things we are also taking donations of quality women’s clothing. Please bring all donations to the Office. Christine’s Office is looking a little like a store room but we have plenty of storage upstairs- so don’t hold back! CHANGE OF TIME: Please note the cancellation of the opening of the backyard for Wesley Apartments. Unfortunately the work will not be completed in time. We look forward to the time when we can get together to celebrate the amazing work which has been done. The ‘health challenge’ affects so many of us but especially our musicians at present. Our prayers are with Don as he undergoes further treatment. And we are also very aware of Soo Ling’s father back in Malaysia. We pray for Soo Ling and her mother as they are in Malaysia as a family. This leaves Flora, Bruce and Rev Christine as our musicians- so we are very glad we have technology to assist us with music.
