Though you do not intend on driving whilst overseas, it is recommended you get an International Driving Permit.

This permit allows motorists to drive in overseas countries without testing.

NSW Licence

You can drive on your overseas licence for a maximum of three months after the arrival in Australia. Visit for Driving School Parramatta Sydney NO.1 driving school.

It is permitted only after showing appropriate proofs. After three months, one should apply for NSW licence 

International driving licence

The Australian government permits licence for international drivers and riders in two ways, either Permanent or Temporary.

Permanent Overseas Visitor licence

You will be allowed to drive in Sydney without being considered as a visitor, only if you provide any of the following:

1. Permanent Australian resident

2. Permanent Visa under the Commonwealth Migration Act 1958

 

You can drive on the roads of Sydney with the current overseas licence for a maximum period of three months.

Further, after the three months, you will need to apply for a new copy of licence to continue driving or riding.

Temporary Overseas Visitor licence

Some of the people would stay in Sydney for more than three months without permanent Australian residency.

They will be issued with a Temporary Overseas Visitor licence.

Other than English language in licence

If the licence is written in English, it can be submitted directly at the Road Transport Authority.

But if the licence is not written in English, it must get an official translation from either of the following

 

• Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Indigenous Affairs

• NSW Community Relations Commission

You should also provide a letter from a relevant diplomat if some of the additional licensing information is needed.

For New Zealand licence holders

The New Zealand drivers and riders should obtain a North South Wales licence regardless of permanent or temporary Australian resident.

After 3 months, it will be either to obtain a permanent licence or to stop driving.

Conditions for obtaining a NSW licence

There are certain age requirements for getting the NSW licence.

For learner driver licence, you must be at least 16 years and must be 16 years and 9 months for a learner rider licence and 17 years for a rider licence.

NSW’s Graduated Licensing Scheme

The NSW licence will be issued by taking into account this link overseas licence.

After passing the required tests, the NSW licence will be issued in accordance with the NSW’s Graduated Licensing Scheme.

Proof of Permanent Residency

• Proof of NSW address must be shown• Identity Proof should be submitted• The eyesight test should be passed• Pass a knowledge test for the respective class of licence required• Pass a driving test

Exempt from driving test

There is a possibility for getting exempted from passing a driving test if you have submitted an Australian Drivers License or a New Zealand licence or licence from a country with similar driving standards.
