Launching a new year

Commander Cdr. Lisa Fegan, P

I am so honored to begin this year as the commander of this incredible squadron.

Never in a million years did I think that I would be accepting this position and am so excited to get started! What a great night we had at the Change of Watch. It was so nice seeing P/D/C Marty and D/Lt/C Sari Lafferty. Marty really brought a sense of formality to the CoW.

I never boated until I met Bruce. He had a 15-foot Zuma day sailor, which we took out every weekend and I got hooked. Bruce’s father, Denny, (who was the commander of the Galveston squadron) got us into the squadron. He called George Painter and said that his son wanted to join. George immediately invited us to a raftup at Great Oak Landing. I couldn’t go but Bruce and Denny did and had a great time!

Bruce and I joined the squadron in 2008. In 2009 I became the treasurer and held that post for four years. After that, it was just a matter of moving up!

Before we bought our boat, we did a lot of sailing with Bruce’s dad in Mystic, Ct., and even went to Block Island for a weekend. I thought, “Wow this is the life!!” Since then we have put more than 700 hours on It’s About Time, cruising to six states and driving at least 20,000 miles with the trailer. We even trailered the boat to Sanibel Island six times, usually over Thanksgiving.

Squadron members honored

R/C Bill McMeniman III, SN, and P/C Susan M. Friedrichs, SN, were honored at the United States Power Squadron annual conference in Orlando earlier this year. Bill, shown with his wife, Edie, was cited for meritorious service as national chairman of the Educational Outreach Committee. Susan received a lifetime membership award from C/C Luis Ojeda for 50 years’ membership.

Locally, P/Cs Wayne and Meredith Barrett, JN* and AP*, were recognized for 25 years of membership in our squadron.

Keep your calendar handyGreetings from your newly appointed

Administrator. I am looking forward to a fun year! As I write this, we have already had the Change of Watch and welcome all the newly-minted officers!

The dates and locations of several upcoming events are still in progress. However, here are a few for 2017:

The next dinner meeting is April 20 at Brickside Grille in Eagleview Town Center in Exton. We will have a private dining room.

Our speaker will be Capt. Mark Einstein of Blue Crab Chesapeake Charters, describing his cruise to the British Virgin Islands. Cocktails are at 6:30 and dinner is at 7:30. This cost is $35 per person. Contact me at 610-296-9291 or [email protected] to reserve your spot.

May’s Pre-Cruise dinner meeting will be May 18 at San Nicola Restaurant in Paoli. Russ and Barb Jones will present the plans for this year’s cruise.

Commander Lisa Fegan has scheduled the Summer Kick-Off party for June 17. It will be at KNARF’S Tiki Bar (AKA Frank and Patti Visich’s house) 1205 Lancaster Ave., Berwyn.

July 7-16 is the Commander’s Cruise on the Chesapeake. Sign up to join it for one or more days — or the entire cruise. Among the activities are a parrot head cocktail party and a luau where Hawaiian shirts are required.

We will organize more land and sea rendezvous soon.

And mark Dec. 16 on your calendar for the Holiday Party at Glenhardie Country Club.

I am excited for this opportunity to be this year’s Administrator but I am a little scared, nervous and stressed as I attempt to handle this task.

I would greatly appreciate any help that you can offer as I look forward to a fun year in 2017-2018.

Welcome MLSPS cruisers July 11 and 12!

Over the last year, it seemed like I was constantly working on the logistics of some upcoming event. Right now, being Executive Officer looks rather tranquil to me. I’m sure it’s a case of the rookie not understanding the position fully and that I will feel differently in a few months.

I have agreed to coordinate our Veterans’ Event again this year. There are still many details to work out but we are tentatively planning on having it August 5 at Skipjack Cove Marina again. Ed White is working on this as well. Stay tuned for updates.

The D5 Spring Conference is scheduled for March 30-April 2 at the Princess Royale Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland. The conference includes a full schedule of workshops designed to enhance your knowledge of USPS’s mission of boating safety and District 5’s contribution to fulfilling that goal.

The agenda includes CPR/First Aid for Boaters. Participants will learn how to provide CPR and the first aid procedures for handling situations commonly encountered by boaters. They include such situations as:

• Calling for help on the water• Carbon monoxide poisoning• Drowning• Hypothermia• Sunburn• Seasickness• Jellyfish stingsPart of the class is online, and part of it is

in person. While many of you will be reading this after the conference, the subject matter is critical and possessing the knowledge could make somebody’s day on the water less miserable, or possibly save somebody’s life. If you missed this class, it’s a good bet it will be offered again in the future.

Other upcoming D5 events include the Bay Bridge Boat Show, April 21-23 at the Bay Bridge Marina in Stevensville, Md. and the Boat Operator Certification Challenge, May 20-21, at Castle Harbor Marina, in Kent Narrows.

Education Officer P/C Nick Montalto, SN

We need a few good men and womenClasses this spring include three America’s

Boating Course programs, the Piloting course and two seminars -- Mastering Rules of the Road and VHF/DSC Radio. We have good turnouts for all programs. The current schedule is on Page 6.

We obtained the instructor presentation material for a Paddleboat Seminar and are planning to offer it this summer or fall. The United States Coast Guard has identified paddleboats as having an increasing rate of boating accidents compared to other boats, and is encouraging boating organizations to teach safety to those boaters.

Paddleboaters are venturing farther out from land, frequently do not wear PFDs, and can purchase paddleboats from suppliers such as Amazon, Home Depot, Kohls, TJ Maxx and Sears, without getting any safety expertise or direction to obtain instruction.

I am looking for squadron members, or their friends, to take an interest in learning to teach the Paddleboat Seminar and help introduce our squadron to paddleboaters. Contact me if you have an interest.

We will take the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer to a youth event on June 10 at Daniel Boone Homestead near Reading. See details below, and get involved!

The Squadron has a goal of becoming involved with boating safety and the merit badge programs offered by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. If any squadron members are or have been involved in scouting and would like to work to develop this program, contact me.

I want to thank Lance Parry, our outgoing SEO, for his service in the Education Department and for the help he gave me as assistant SEO. Our incoming assistant SEO, Jim Heckman, and Bill McManimen, are off to a good start in preparing courses to train squadron instructors. Several previously certified instructors have expired certifications and need to take a short recertification course.

We are also looking for those interested in becoming new instructors and will be offering a course to have them certified. Jim has also been very active in District 5 and USPS national education efforts.

MLSPS will introduce Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire members to boating, using the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer.

The trainer will make its appearance at the 50th Patriot Days Encampment at Daniel Boone Homestead on June 10. The encampment

attracts several hundred young people for a weekend of activities.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Frank Visich at [email protected].

Taking the trainer on the road is a good way for our squadron to reach a new audience.

Highlights from the February and March Executive Committee meetings that are not covered in other pages of The Pilot include:

• Safety Officer Lt. Stuart Kaplan said he has received 38 responses to his Safe Boater survey, of 102 surveys that were sent.

• Incoming Cdr. Lisa Fegan announced that Lt/C Frank Visich will chair the Rendezvous/Boating Activities committee for her command.

• Squadron members voted to amend the MLSPS bylaws to allow more past commanders to serve on the nominating committee. This change conforms to USPS’ national standards.

• P/C Nick Montalto, P/C Lance Parry and P/Lt/C Jim Heckman stressed that the squadron needs more certified instructors.

• Cdr. Charles Rossi stressed the importance of conducting Vessel Safety Checks again this season. Maryanne and Sieg Boettjer coordinate this project. Additional examiners are needed. USPS National is seeking to increase certification and examiners by 20 percent this year.

• P/C Wayne Barrett reported that advertising revenues for the Pilot newsletter totaled $540 in 2016. P/C Russ Jones offered to contact marinas on this year’s summer cruise to purchase ads.

Highlights from recent Ex-Com meetings

European waterways talk

Shawn Lewis, the executive director of Captain’s Travel Club in Kennett Square, spoke on “Traveling the Rivers of Europe” at the squadron’s February dinner meeting.

He promoted AmaWaterways as a cruise line to many destinations, and said it compares favorably with Viking Cruises. He also reminded solo travelers to look for accommodations and tour companies that do not charge an extra fee for singles.

About 35 squadron members attended the meeting at the Eagle Tavern.

Our Main Line Sail & Power Squadron 2017 summer cruise itinerary is set. We call this the Commander’s Cruise since the commander decides which ports of call we will visit. Cdr. Lisa Fegan has chosen five marinas for this year’s cruise; four of them provide the opportunity for two-night stays. We are estimating that between 15 and 20 boats will join us this summer. There will be many interesting activities on the cruise, all of which are optional. Look for details about them on Page 9.

We always have fun activities, and hopefully that will influence your decision to join us this year. These will include a luau cookout, a cruise on the Skipjack HM Krentz, dinner at several great restaurants, more than a few of our celebrated boat crawls, and of course the infamous “forward throttle award” ceremony. You will be able to sign up for them at our pre-cruise dinner on May 18. Don’t miss this annual cruise! Something exciting always provides wonderful memories. We are looking forward to seeing you!

By P/C Lance Parry, AP*D5 Fa! Conference Co-Chair

Planning for this year’s D5 Fall Education Conference, Oct. 26-29, got under way in earnest at a March meeting, when we established 12 areas of responsibility and named chairmen for those areas.

In addition to creating the organizational structure, Jim Heckman and I created flyers and a poster to help get the word out early about the conference to other squadrons. The flyers, with a Valley Forge theme, were scheduled to be distributed at the Spring Conference registration table, where the poster was also to be displayed.

A preliminary budget was developed by Conference Treasurer Mike Gibson and approved by District 5.

The conference host is Main Line Sail and Power Squadron, with assistance from the Delaware River Sail and Power Squadron, and Delhigh Power Squadron.

Areas of responsibility and their chairs are:

Conference Chairs: Lance Parry, contract negotiations/interpretations, hotel liaison; Gary Armstrong, project manager.

Treasurer: Mike Gibson. Reservations: Representative from

DelHigh Power Squadron. Ticketing: Barb Jones, aided by Lisa

Fegan, Sue Friedrichs. Entertainment: Ed White. Forms, Publicity: Jim Heckman, aided

Make sure your crew is ready for your next moveBy Stuart Kaplan, Safety Officer

This is a report of a near lethal jibing accident that has never before been described. The accident occurred on a 30-foot Hunter sailboat that was about 10 years old.

Dr. Dave Nelson, the accident victim who is a physician and my brother-in-law, reports his boat had an unusual arrangement of the main sheet and another line called the traveler that exerts control over the upper part of the mainsail. Both lines ran along the bottom of the boom and when not under tension hung in parallel loops.

In July, 2011, the boat left shore for a pleasant day sail on Long Island Sound. Aboard were the skipper and his adolescent son, along with Dave and my adolescent nephew. The skipper was experienced. Dave was relatively new to sailing. He had had some sailing lessons and was pleased to have an opportunity to serve as

crew to gain more experience. The two boys were inexperienced crew. The weather was sunny with a moderate 10-knot breeze.

The day went well. In the afternoon the boat was sailing downwind with the boom and mainsail out to the port side. Dave was standing in the front of the cockpit on the port side stowing a winch and coiling lines.

As sailing protocol requires, the skipper first called, “prepare to jibe” and then called, “ready to jibe?” Each crew member except Dave responded, “ready” indicating that the crew member was alert and prepared for the maneuver.

Dave did not call “ready.” Preoccupied with his tasks, he had not heard the command “prepare to jibe” nor “ready to jibe?”

He said later that the skipper did not wait to hear from him but began to jibe. Also, the

A jibe is a common sailing maneuver. Despite its routine use, it can entail considerable risk.

In a jibe the boom and mainsail are roughly perpendicular to the hull. The wind is coming over the stern, pushing the boat downwind by striking the large area of the mainsail directly. This is known as sailing downwind.

To turn the boat, the mainsail must be brought to the opposite side of the boat. (See drawing at right.)

If the wind gets in front of the mainsail, an accidental or uncontrolled jibe will occur in

which the boom swings violently to the opposite side of the boat.

In such a jibe the boom could hit someone in the head, or the force of the wind on the boom could tear the boom from the mast or tear the mast from the boat.

To avoid this, sailors perform a controlled jibe. This is initiated by bringing the boom 90 degrees to the center of the cockpit by tightening the line to the boom (known as the main sheet). Boat on a downwind course

mainsail was not brought into the middle of the boat before initiating the jibe. The jibe was made simply by changing the boat’s direction by

moving the wheel. The wind got in front of the mainsail and forcefully pushed the mainsail to the cockpit and toward the other side of the boat - an accidental or uncontrolled jibe.

When the boom reached the cockpit, Dave’s head was caught by the loops of line and

trapped. The lines immediately tightened as the boom tried to swing to starboard. Dave was lifted from his feet in the cockpit. He was hanging by his neck. He could not breathe. He was strangling and his face reddened. He struggled frantically but could not free himself from the grip of the lines.

My terrified nephew and the other boy held on to Dave’s body to prevent him from swinging out of the cockpit to the starboard side of the boat. The skipper, thinking quickly, brought the bow close to the wind, which loosened the lines, dropping Dave back into the cockpit.

Six years later, Dave still has a prominent scar across his throat. He suffered no permanent damage to his windpipe or other internal structures.

There are risks to sailing. As with most sports, vigilance and attention to fundamentals provide a measure of safety.

Today Dave sails his 22-foot Catalina Capri in Long Island Sound and moors it on Montauk Lake. Many thanks to Dave for this contribution.

MLSPS docked at the boat show

By Lt. Frank VisichBoat Show Coordinator

Here’s a heartfelt thanks to all who helped make this year’s squadron booth at the Greater Philadelphia Boat Show a big success!

Many squadron members were on hand to set up and staff the booth.

The “Virtual Trainer” was a big attention grabber. Participants from 8 to 80 years old tried their hands at docking and navigating.

I’m sure we must have logged over a 1,000

nautical miles on the system during the show.We talked to many about MLSPS and

handed out literature about ourselves. We also had a good response to our courses and gathered names of people who asked for more information.

As a side note, the famous Twiggy the Water-Skiing Squirrel appeared at the show. Most of us sneaked over to catch her act.(Although no one will admit it…right, Nick?) Plan to carve out some time to help at the boat show next year, March 9-11.

Commander’s column continued $om Page 1

I have been working with our Bridge to fill our calendar with activities on the water to attract as many members as possible.

Look for details on upcoming meetings in Administrative Officer Patti Visich’s column, then mark your calendar.

This year I’d like to start a message board for members to post when they go boating for a day or a weekend, so anyone can join them. We plan on doing a lot of boating this season, and everyone’s welcome!!

I would also like continue getting new members. One approach is to seek out anyone who boats — possibly paddleboarders, kayakers and wave runners. See SEO Nick Montalto’s column for more.

We’ve had a lot of success getting new members from our classes, because of our incredible and talented instructors and their enthusiasm for the squadron.

Here’s to a great year!! See you on the water!
