This is another service to ourmembers which will help boatowners make an informed berthingdecision. Dear Sir…We are looking at non-violent ways of discouraging largenumbers of racing pigeons now nesting in every nook andcranny together with a growing population of cats whosewily ways are starting to see to the pigeon problem but in arather minor and disturbingly messy fashion. We areworking with a local animal charity who will neuter cats inexchange for a food and water programme but I wonderedwhether others had had any similar problems andmanaged to find effective (and acceptable!) solutions.

Dear ReaderI’ve found out about an aerial bird which could be usedas an effective deterrent method to repel birds. A company called Birdcontrol.net has come up with aninnovative Helikite hybrid kite balloon and have manydifferent types of deterrent techniques for differentsituations/locations. The Bird Swipe was recommendedby the company for attaching to boats. Check out theirwebsite www.birdcontrol.net and hopefully it works for you.

Dear reader…The MCA currently run a disposal programme for oldflares, or time expired pyrotechnics as they areformally known, at a limited number of sites across theUK (details can be found at www.mcga.gov.uk).Alternatively, the BMF has launched its own disposalservice, in association with EOD Contracts Ltd. Thisservice is available for £2.25 per kilogram. Pleasecontact the BMF's Environment Manager, Brian Clarkon [email protected] for moreinformation.

Rock Fall BlocksShropshire CanalA major rock fall in WoodseavesCutting, north of Market Drayton, has blocked the main line of theShropshire Union Canal.

Woodseaves – one of thelongest and deepest on thewaterways – has, with the twoother major Shroppie cuttings,Grub Street and Cowley, a historyof falls dating from theconstruction of this waterway inthe1830s. Millions of pounds havebeen spent on remedial works onall three over the years.

The fall is between bridges 56and 57 and a specialist contractorstarted work on Thursday January27 to remove loose and dangerousmaterial from the face of thecutting. When this material hasbeen removed a second contractteam will be able to access the site of the rock slide safely tocommence removal of debris fromthe bed of the canal.

British Waterways (BW) says it’sdifficult to confirm a date for thefull reopening of the canal to boattraffic at the present time. It’sexploring all options that mayenable some restricted passagepast the rockslide until full accessis possible. Words by: Harry Arnold -Waterway Images

The decision to introduce this new fuel came after concerns continued to mount fromboat owners about the environmental effects, as well as contamination of fuel tankswith diesel bug, which clogs filters causing loss of power and engine breakdown.

Dean Smith, Marketing Director at MDL Marinas, said: “We understand our customers concernsover biodiesel content in marine fuel, and through the support of our supplier, we are delighted tobe able to secure supplies of diesel which meet the new British standard. “To ensure this fuel reaches the pump in top condition, we conduct regular fuel tank cleaning andtesting. This supply and our steps to ensure we maintain our fuel quality, gives our customers all theenvironmental benefits of low sulphur fuel with the added peace of mind that the potential problems of biodiesel will be avoided.”

MDL’s fuel stations are supplied by Shell’s distributor, Emo Oils Limited.

With the 22 acre marina nowhome to more than 20 businessesand hundreds of boat owners,Boys, its Managing Director, has sethis sights on another 170 boatowners berthing their boats atTrafalgar.

“We’re building a drystack atTrafalgar. We’ve got hugeundercover facilities where wecan stack motorboats and RIBS ona specialised framework. We can then lift and launch boats

in a matter of minutes for owners. It saves them time, maintenancemoney and keeps their boats intop condition”.

“We believe that the largestDrystack in the UK will be amassive boost to every boat ownerlooking for a boat berth on theSolent. More boat owners usingour facilities will also mean aboost to the 30 marine-relatedbusinesses at Trafalgar Wharf.”

“It will be a great addition to

the marine community and isanother key piece of thetransformation of the shipyardfrom military to commercial andleisure business use.”

The Drystack at TrafalgarWharf, as it has been named, hasinvested in a huge marine boatlifttruck from the Americancompany Wiggins, the Rolls Royceof marine boatlift manufacturers. The boatlift is a custom-buildwhich can lift boats 40 feet long60ft up onto the framework and22ft down below to the water.

Plans for a new inlandmarina near Daventrywith 585 berths have beencriticised over fears it will

increase congestion on the canal.A trade meeting with BritishWaterways, TYHA and the BritishMarine Federation held in Januarysaw around 40 business peopleobject to the proposed £15milliondevelopment at Onley.

Howard Pridding – BMFExecutive Director said:“The BMF was pleased to play apart in this meeting given thehistory of our dialogue withBritish Waterways about themarinas market. There are

complicated issues related tocompetition law which dictatewhat BW can and cannot do inrespect of new marinadevelopments. I believe that themeeting improvedunderstanding of these issuesfor all.

The major outcome of themeeting was discussion of thewider issues that contribute tocongestion on the network.Long waits at locks andcrowded visitor moorings is amajor area of dissatisfaction toour members customers. Theformation of a working group toquantify the issues and setbenchmarks to measure the

problem is a step forward indealing with the issues. I willbe ensuring that the BMF andour associations, TYHA andAPCO, continue to play a leadrole in the discussion.”

Following the meeting TYHA areworking with the BMF, traderepresentative APCO and BritishWaterways to establish a clearmeans of identifying congestion inthe hope that future decisions willtake this into consideration.

Arecent survey conducted forSport England has shown thata strong social scene is a keyfactor to boaters enjoymentand can increase boat use. Itspurs boat owners to cruise,

train, meet up with others and generally to usetheir boats more often. If this is true, the netresult is a livelier marina, more prosperousyard, successful shore-side services andcontented berth holders.

Up until now, the social side of boating hasbeen provided by traditional yacht clubs butover the last few years this has started tochange. Web based clubs are gaining inpopularity; they require little infrastructure, thesubs are low, there are few onerous duties andcommunication is often straight through an e-newsletter or web blog system.

Haslar Marina in Gosport assisted theformation of Haslar Yacht Club (HYC) toprovide berth holders with social interaction, friendship and club-like events in the localarea. HYC aims to broaden the knowledge andexperience of its members, provide peersupport to build boating confidence, providetraining through local RYA training centres andconnect crew with boats.

It started after two keen berth holdersthought that many of the 600 berth holders didnot know the people berthed either side ofthem and some may enjoy informal meetings

and the odd event. Following a meeting, Deanand Reddyhoff gave their full support of a clubwithin the marina. An initial meeting ofinterested berth holders in the marina barconfirmed interest and a group of 10 berthholders volunteered to move the idea forward.

‘Club’ facilities were not required for HYCand communication is via a website andthrough a monthly meet-up in the local bar. Amember’s club website is used to book andpay for events online and was funded by clubsubscriptions. A bank account was set up anda small Committee elected.

After six months the membership stood at70 and had organised talks, run a quiz night, cruised over to the IOW for a night at theproms and run boat-handling sessions for themembers by linking in with local RYA trainingcentres operating within the marina. This yearthey are off to the Channel Isles.

The club has a strong emphasis on ‘après-sailing’ when not on the water anddespite some members living far afield, theymeet every second Thursday in the HaslarMarina pub.

Rachael Foster, Assistant Manager of HaslarMarina said, ‘Haslar Yacht Club has given themarina a community feel. The club organisedevents give a carnival like atmosphere and thetraining sessions have helped the owners withthe confidence and competence to travelfarther afield’.

The Royal Yachting Association hashelped develop both existing andnew clubs to encourage greaterparticipation within boating. Theyrecognise that many boats sit in amarina or on a mooring, but for theboats to move more often, theyneed motivated owners. Cruises, training, rallies and socialsorganised by clubs are greatmotivators. RYA YachtingDevelopment Officer, Guy Malpassaid, ‘We are really keen to helpexisting and new clubs develop. Astrong social scene ashore is oftenthe catalyst to get everyone afloat

during the season and increasetheir confidence and enjoyment inthe sport.’

Following the success of HaslarYacht Club, Portland Marina inDorset has started a similar system.Back in October, they canvassedtheir berth holders andsubsequently arranged a meetingwhich was attended by around 50people. It is run and managed bythe club members and althoughvery new, already has 25 paid upsubscriptions. Portland MarinaManager, Russ Levett said, “The clubhopes to cater for cruising boat

owners who want to get to knowother like minded people andorganise talks and cruises. It seemsto be gaining support’.

The RYA’s Sport Developmentdepartment offers free advice onincreasing participation andhelping clubs develop. They have anetwork of Regional DevelopmentOfficers, covering the UK who arewilling to chat through theopportunities.

Written by Simon Jinks -SeaRegs LLP www.searegs.co.ukTHE SOCIAL SCENE

Today’s leisure market is extremely competitive andboating is competing against a wide range of leisureactivities and constraints on people’s time. Theenjoyment and buzz of going afloat, whether it’svisiting new harbours or just getting away from it all,has its attractions but even more so if it is supportedby a strong social scene afterwards.

Getting to grips with Feed-In Tariffs

Not so long ago if youwanted to install a windturbine or solarphotovoltaic panels you

could have accessed a grant fromthe Government’s ‘Low CarbonBuilding Programme’ but publicspending cuts resulted in thisscheme being closed in May 2010to new applicants. The good news, however, is that the Governmenthas introduced a Feed-In Tariff or‘clean energy cash back scheme’ toencourage small scale, low carbonelectricity generation, designed tohelp the UK meet its commitmentto the EU Renewable EnergyDirective by generating 15% of its total energy from renewables by 2020.

The Feed-In Tariffs aim toencourage businesses andhouseholds to install micro-renewable technologies, or in plainEnglish, wind turbines, solar panelsand even hydroelectric turbines. The Feed-In Tariff works byrewarding owners of the renewableenergy installations for every kWhof energy that they produce(regardless of whether the energy isused or sold back to the grid). Thisamount will vary depending on the

type and rated output of theinstallation. There are three ways tobenefit if you have eligibletechnology:1. Generation tariff: a fixed

payment from your electricitysupplier for every unit of energyor kilowatt hour (kWh)generated for a period of 20years (except for solar PV whichwould be for 25 years);

2. Export tariff: if you do not usethe electricity on-site you canexport it to the grid. You will geta guaranteed minimum paymentadditional to the generation tarifffor every kWh exported to thegrid; and

3. On-site use of electricity: areduction in your electricity billas you’ll be producing electricityon-site.

Micro renewables must be installedby a Microgeneration CertificationScheme (MCS) registered companyin order to qualify for Feed-InTariffs. Of course, without grantsthere is still the question offinancial outlay for the installation– one option is to consider aninterest free loan from The CarbonTrust in which case the financialreturn might look like this.

A solar photovoltaic system rated9.89kW will cost approx. £29,000 toinstall, and up until April 2012 thescheme will pay out 36.1 pence forevery kWh you produce for thenext 25 years (this price is indexlinked to inflation). The estimatednet return of a 9.89kW system is11.79% so payback of the systemwould take around 8.5 years. Forthe remaining 16.5 years producerswill receive the guaranteedpayback and could expect to makea profit of £56,506.

In addition to the financialreturn, there are of courseenvironmental gains. The exampleabove would reduce CO² emissionsby 4,249 kgs per year which mightbe of interest to the larger marinagroups affected by the CarbonReduction Commitment.

The Loughs Agency has announced that it plans to moveforward with two projects on the River Foyle, inpartnership with Londonderry Port and HarbourCommission - a marine event platform and a cruise shipquay. Agency chief executive Derick Anderson haswelcomed news from the SEUPB that European RegionalDevelopment Fund (or ERDF) funding has now beenapproved for these exciting developments, through theINTERREG IVA Programme.

A new pontoon will be built on the River Foyle, downstream of the existing visitor pontoon. Thisdevelopment will serve as a platform to host events witha water-based focus, such as sailing regattas, rowingevents and visits by tall ships or naval ships. It will bedesigned to accommodate vessels up to the size of asmall cruise ship.

The cruise ship quay will be developed atMeadowbank Quay, just upstream of Fort George. This willprovide an attractive dedicated berth for the increasingnumber of cruise ships sailing in to the city.

Both projects will open up potential for ship visits andwater based events and activity. Together, these facilitieswill help bring the river to life in Derry’s city centre.

The harbour master of Londonderry Port andHarbour, Bill McCann, says this is fantastic news, especially with Clipper coming to the Foyle in 2012 and planned events linked to the City of Culture festivitiesin 2013.

The Loughs Agency and the Port say they are hopefulthat the quay and pontoon will be operational later thisyear. The projects are supported by funds from theEuropean Regional Development Fund.

Liverpool Water Witch, UK builders of an innovativerange of workboats for waterway maintenance, have delivered a 7m ‘Buddy’ to SandefjordHarbour in Southern Norway.

The boat has been busy cleaning during the summer andthe Harbour Master, Bjornar Christiansen commented thatit was doing a super job collecting all the unsightlymarine debris, including seaweed and algae.

Jackie Caddick, director of Water Witch said…“Marine debris causes serious economic, social, aestheticand environmental damage. It is one of the mostpervasive pollution problems plaguing our waterways andoceans. Nets, food wrappers, bottles, styrofoam packagingand other rubbish isn’t only an eyesore – it has seriousimpacts on wildlife, habitat and human safety.

Through Sandefjord’s efforts to make their watersbeautiful, healthy and safe they are making a positivecontribution to their waterfront community.

The Buddy has proven an effective tool in the fightagainst marine debris, offering a safe and reliable clean-up system. The boat has the ability to pick up all typesand sizes of floating and submerged debris and alsotackles other waterway management issues such asinvasive aquatic vegetation.”

Sandefjord, once a Whaling station, is now a thrivingcruise and sailing destination located within the mightyOslo Fjord, with over 90 moorings and 40 guest berths inthe inner harbour. A key responsibility of the Harbour isto enhance the recreational and visitor satisfaction of itswaterway and the acquisition of this cleanup boat willmake a significant contribution to this objective.

The 7m boat features a removable collection basketwhich efficiently collects debris and vegetation. A uniquedrop in ‘pod’ system supports various operatingconfigurations, from oil spill recovery to mobile pumpout. Additional options include a 1500kg capacity Aframe to service moorings. It is powered by a Yamaha25hp high thrust four stroke engine, designed for poweringdisplacement workboats.

The Buddy is now available with the option of anelectric motor to allow the vessel to operate with zeroemissions, and of course, the aluminium hull is 100%recyclable at the end of it’s working life.

The first phase of AlcaidesaMarina became operational inAugust 2010, with 624 berths ableto handle vessels from 8m to 50m.These are wider than average, tocater for modern vessel designs. Work began on the marina in 2008as a joint venture between UKconstruction/engineeringcompany Costain and Spanishbank Banesto, who between themhave also created residential andgolfing facilities in the area. Facilities marking out Alcaidesafrom other marinas in the regioninclude wi-fi at every berth, pluswater and electricity supply towers

for every two moorings withindependent meters and systemsfor pre-payment and payment byconsumption. Televisionconnections are also available onseveral of the pontoons, which areaccessed by proximity card-activated locking systems. In addition to the high quality ofthe facilities, Alcaidesa’s biggestselling point with the sailingcommunity is likely to be itslocation.Lying in the bay of Algeciras, at thegateway between theMediterranean and Atlantic, itsposition on the leeward side of

bay from the easterly winds thatpass through the straits means it issheltered, but not becalmed;sailing days are rarely lost.

Even on those days when the windis very strong, the shelter affordedby the bay makes sailing possible;Morocco lies across the straits andPortugal is a day’s sailing away tothe west, while the holiday hotspotof Marbella lies to the east.

Alcaidesa Opens For Business

A new, strategically-positioned marina has opened itsberths for business at the gateway to the Mediterranean.

The Düsseldorf agency of urban planning, waterfront development, competencelabel of the „JANSEN MENN ACArchitects Consultants“, urban aqua®,intensifies apart from the direct

architectural and conceptional project work also thefield of consulting with advice, studies and analysis.

Before building there comes planning, verifyingand evaluation. That is also valid for watersideprojects. Thus many communities and regions haveattractive waterside locations, but whatmeasurements are effective under whichcircumstances must be deliberatelyplanned. Here urban aqua offerssupport: custom-fit consulting for themaritime project development, fromconsulting to location and marketconcepts. With urban aqua, thearchitects Peter Jansen and StephanMenn have created their owncompetence label for maritimeplanning and building. In theplanning agency Jansen Menn ACArchitects Consultants, Düsseldorf, they bundleexperiences from their own practice, scientific workand association work. The expert combination ofarchitecture and consulting is urban aqua's brandmark. For customers that means well-groundedstrategy development and reliability for a successfulrealization.

Urban watersides are of great importance forcities and regions. Living and working or sports andtourism – the demand is increasing. This can beseen especially in maritime tourism very clearly, inspite of the constantly decreasing number of activewater sports enthusiasts. More and more people feelattracted to landside offers and want to experiencewater in their everyday life and on holiday. Thus theperspectives for communities and regions are – aswell as private investors – basically very good.

National and international examples from urbanaqua's practice show, what expert consulting canaccomplish in project development.

The same applies for the engagement inassociations. By its membership in internationalorganizations, especially the carrying-over of theSecretary of „International Marina Committee“ (IMC)of the ICOMIA to Peter Jansen, the working group„Recreational Navigation“ of PIANC, and theparticipation in scientific studies by the „EuropeanConfederation of Nautical Industries“ (ECNI), urbanaqua was able to continually enlarge its degree of

popularity, its reputation and itsalready mentioned experience level.Based upon these internationalactivities, Peter Jansen and StephanMenn have been more and moreinvited as speakers to internationalcongresses, e.g.: InternationalConference on Boating and Yachting,Brazil, January 2008, InternationalMarina Conference, Belgium, Mai 2008,International Conference on Boating

and Yachting, India, December 2008, World WaterCongress, South Korea, August 2009 and WorldChannel Conference, Serbia, September 2009.

To put it in a nutshell: Maritime projectdevelopment is more than classical planning andbuilding. Investors and public decision-makers areoffered a broad (company) consulting witharchitecture and consulting by urban aqua. Anapproved and well-founded combination satisfyingthe various needs for sustained success.

There is always strength innumbers. Over the past 44years, ICOMIA(International Council of

Marine Industry Associations) hastogether with its worldwidemembership proved that there is atruth in the old expression.

“Our membership is whatmakes and defines ICOMIA”, saysTony Rice, ICOMIA’s SecretaryGeneral.

“I like to think of ourorganisation as one big family. Weface any difficulties we mightencounter together and we alwaystry to help each other out. It is theway it has always been.”

The ICOMIA Secretariatregularly gets together with itsmembers during the year. Vitalissues concerning the industry arediscussed in the variouscommittees that deal witheverything from technical issues toenvironmental developments. Eachmember can make her or his voiceheard and has the opportunity to

receive assistance or advice fromtheir fellow marine industryassociations.

ICOMIA’s membership has along history. The organisation wasfounded in Barcelona 1967 byboating veterans Tom Webb and BillMacKerer. A total of fourteennational marine industryassociations co-founded theorganisation. Over the years tocome, the vast majority of therecreational boating industry in theindustrialised countries were topfollow their example and joinICOMIA. The requirements are thesame as they were back in 1967;

The only one thing that wecan see in our crystal ballis that the visions aremurky. The bad news is

that the marina/boatyard industry isstill in intensive care. The good newsis that the industry as a whole is nolonger haemorrhaging. The betternews is that the marina/boatyardindustry is faring much better thanother parts of the marine industries.

Current outlookWhile there are softer spotsremaining here and there, manymore areas seem to have evenedout. There appears to be softness inslip occupancy, both seasonal andeven more so in transient business.Boaters seem to be using their boatsless, and when they do use them, they are staying closer to home.

The cost of fuel in the U.S. hasbeen hovering around US$3.00 toUS$4.00 on the water and moretoward the US$3.00 range at servicestations. Many economists arepredicting that gasoline in the U.S.will rise to between US$4.00 andUS$6.00 over the next couple ofyears. With a forecast for a sluggisheconomy during the same period. The cost of entry into the boating

mark is continuing to go up andaccording to some, is rising fasterthan one would anticipate.

This has made a lot of themiddle market customers nervousabout buying, upgrading and usingboats. Many who had lost their jobshave rebounded but are beingextremely cautious, while othersare still searching to get back ontheir feet.

One trend that appears to beprevalent is that boaters arebecoming more selective and moredemanding in their expectations, aswell as more cost conscious overall. While they love their boats, whetherit’s for day use, getting away from itall or pure show, boating is in thedisposable personal incomecolumn, so to keep them, the marinaexperience has to be up-to-date,enjoyable and satisfying, with little orno hassles.

Some solutionsThose facilities that are doing morethan surviving have gone back tobasics. You have often heard me sayservice, service, service. Enhancingthe appearance and ambiance ofthe facility is an inexpensive way tokeep and draw in people. Think ofwhat annoys you as a customer andmake sure that the same thing is nothappening at your facility.

This year the owner of a smallmom-and-pop facility slapped a newcoat of paint on his large building, made his employees have cleanshirts with the marina logo, hauledaway four dumpsters worth of“collectables,” and installed a coffeemachine. The result? People startedtalking, and the facility was morethan 95% occupied without pricinggimmicks. It held several potluckpicnic dinners and hosted a coupleof fishing tournaments with ribbonsfor trophies (the owner said hecould not afford real trophies). Hisservice business is up about 8percent. He makes a point of talkingwith every service customer, either inperson or on the phone, to tell themwhat is being done, what was foundand other items the customer maywish to consider having adjusted.

Another facility volunteered andsent their mechanic to check out amuch larger boat that their customerwas looking at, and that customerended up buying the boat due inlarge part to the mechanic’sassistance.

Still another facility put in plantsand shrubs along the entrance driveand waterfront – a low budgetproject that was exceedingly wellreceived and invited people back tothe facility.

Potential futureIn this down economy, those withthe financial ability and stayingpower are taking the opportunity toupgrade and modernize theirfacilities. Contracting prices havecome down, as have the cost ofmany facility products. Rack storagecontinues to grow in popularity aswell as customer acceptance. Somefacilities are reconfiguring for abetter mixture of slips for thecurrent and future boat sizes.Unfortunately, the regulatoryprocess has not slowed down, and ifanything, has increased in terms ofrequirements.

For the next couple of years, wewould expect some softness inseasonal slip holders and transients. We would also expect some whoare not using their boats to leave. We

anticipate those just coming intoboating, be it because of a bargainpurchase or exuberant enthusiasm,to use their boats more. The usedboat market will continue to thrive, albeit at what might be considereddiscount pricing, and selectively, thenew boat market will survive.

While every facility and regionis unique, one universal theme thatseems to work is to have at leastone customer appreciation day. Youwould be surprised at those whochange their schedules to comeand get a free hotdog or hamburger. It allows bringing the customersback to the facility and provides anopportunity to network and catchup with your customers. For thosethat have never done it, you may besurprised at the amount of goodwill that it generates. And if you do

it, definitely invite all of your electedofficials (senator, congressman, statelegislators and your local town orcity council, as well as the localplanning and zoning boards andstaffs). Let them get to know youbefore you need to go before them.

Another facility runs a swapmeet (some would say garage sale)where both nautical and otheritems seem to appear and changeeager hands.

Yet another facility providesfresh muffins, rolls and coffee tohelp reinforce their customerscoming back to the boat, stayingin boating and having a positiveoutlook.

What is the Dual Docker? The DualDocker is an innovativedocking system for motor and sailingyachts. It replaces conventionalsystems, like moorings, fingers, piles, bow anchors and buoys.

The DualDocker consists of twoaluminium-alloy arms (stainless steelupon request), which are firmlyattached to the pier (fixed or floatingstructures) and interface with thestern cleats of the yacht (DualDockerball or exchange combi-cleats).

How does the DualDocker work? The arms with high damping capacityare holding the yacht in place, therebyeliminating kinetic energy created bywind and waves. The yacht lies calm and stable at her berth.

The DualDocker forms a stable prismwith the yacht; lateral forces arereduced to a minimum. In stronger winds, the use ofDualDocker spring and diagonal linesis necessary.

Innovation • The DualDocker is an innovative

state-of-the-art docking system • Implanting the DualDocker means

creating a new, modern marinaimage: No piles, no fingers, no buoys,no mooring

Increasing youroccupancy rate

• Attracting new customers: With theDualDocker you can add a cutting-edge to your services which maymake customers decide for yourmarina.

• High customer satisfaction: Offeringthe possibility of a whole newexperience of docking meanshappier customers.

• Gaining sellable space: Where y-booms; mooring or piles are not anoption due to limited space or adeep harbour bed, the DualDocker isa great alternative.

• Docking with the DualDockerinstead of alongside creates up to400% more sellable space.

Attracting, satisfying andretaining customers

More convenience in the marinaA better time on board - day andnight: Less rocking, less rolling, nosqueaking rope noises. No morecollisions with the pier orneighbouring yachts, even duringstronger winds. Fixed, customer-defined distance stern-to-pier makesboarding and disembarking easy.

Clean, simple, safe, independent and stress-freedockingNo fishing for dirty, mussel-infestedmoorings, easy, quick positioning, asimplified docking manoeuvre whilestaying on board: No jumps withropes, no rope-throwing, no shore-sideassistance required. Easy, quickdepartures: No danger of ropesdamaging propellers, no piles in theway. Individuality & design Berthing spaces can be equippedwith the customised DualDocker toperfectly match the precious yacht -colour, logo and special finishing arepossible.

Safety during a storm Minimised kinetic energy means lessstress on cleats and – with the system’shigh damping capacity - keeps theyacht more stable. In stronger windsand waves, the use of DualDockerspring and diagonal lines is necessary.

An innovative new monthlypublication targetedspecifically at theworldwide sail racing

community has been launched byBritish sailing journalist JustinChisholm. However, you won’t findthis title on your local news standsas Sail Racing Magazine is a digital-only publication combining thevery latest digital publishingtechnology with the global reach ofthe iTunes App Store as itsdistribution channel.

New Year’s Day fittingly heralded the publication of the firstfull issue of Sail Racing Magazine onthe iTunes App Store and, impressively, downloads from iPad,iPhone and iPod Touch users arealready topping six hundred perweek. A browser-based version isalso available for those readerswishing to read it on PC’s, Laptopsand Macs.

Chisholm has been planninghis new venture for the pasttwo years:“I wanted to create something thatwould deliver content that is basedaround expert commentary andanalysis of the sailboat racing world.People are used to getting instantsailing news from a plethora ofsailing websites these days, but thereare fewer and fewer places forracing sailors to read longer, morein-depth articles that really get to theheart of the topic in question. Withtraditional print magazinesstruggling to survive, it was thearrival of hardware like the iPhoneand then the iPad that made SailRacing Magazine a viableproposition.

When I saw major mainstreampublications like The TimesNewspaper, Wired Magazine andother big names investing in theirown Apps, I knew the time was rightto launch.”

Impressive line-up ofcontributorsChisholm has recruited animpressive line-up of big-namesailing writers to his team of regularcolumnists. These include suchluminaries as America’s Cup expertBob Fisher, Olympic sailingcorrespondent Andy Rice, OlympicCoaches Morgan Reeser and MarkRushall and professional sailor andmedia expert Mark Covell. Chisholmhas also signed up Sailing Anarchy’scontroversial Alan Block as Sail

Racing Magazine’s UScorrespondent. “It is a real privilegeto have such a highly regarded teamonboard so early. We also haveseveral other major sailingjournalists and professional sailorslined up to share their views andexpertise in forthcoming issues,”comments Chisholm.

Beyond the quality of the writing, the new magazine’s interactivefeatures are equally impressive, withembedded video and audio files aswell as slick image slideshows. However, according to Chisholm, themain priority remains the quality ofthe content. “The multimediatechnology is cool for sure, butultimately we will live or die basedon how interesting our readers findSail Racing Magazine’s writers andhow excited they are by the imageslideshows and videos.”

With a successful launch and theJanuary issue under his belt,Chisholm is now focused on therelease of the February edition thatwill cost readers £3.99 to downloador view online. “The overwhelmingfeedback we have received fromreaders who downloaded theJanuary issue is that they appreciatethe quality and exclusive nature ofthe content we are providing andare happy to pay a small fee tocarry on receiving it. Our ultimategoal with Sail Racing Magazine isto see it recognised as the verybest sailboat racing publicationon the market.”

To achieve that accolade, Chisholm recognises that he has to consistently deliver top qualitycontent every month and leave the decision to buy down to the readers.

Green Marine one of theworld’s leading specialistsin advanced carbon fibremoulding techniques, hascompleted the build of oneof the largest compositerudders ever made, at itsfactory in Lymington,Hampshire, UK. The rudder was designed byDubois Naval Architects for a66 metre (216 foot) sloop,

which is currently in-build at Vitters Shipyard in theNetherlands. The 7.5 metre long rudder stock waslaminated using approximately one ton of carbon prepreg, and is, by far, the largest rudder that Green Marinehas built during its 28 years of operation.

In conjunction with Lloyds Certification office andSP-High Modulus, the marine business of Gurit, a specifictest programme was created to validate the properties of

the chosen materials.Once in service the rudder will see enormous twistingand bending loads, and the Dubois office calculate thatthe reaction load at the lower bearing will reach up to160 tonnes. The rudder also features a crash tip that willsnap off in the event of the vessel grounding.

Green Marine’s Managing Director, Marcel Müller, said: “This project was perfect for Green Marine. We arevery pleased with our skilled component team whocompleted this project with exacting precision, and whoensured that the rudder was completed to the highestpossible quality standards.”

With decades of experience and having builtrudders for other Vitters super yachts, including MYCinderella and MY Sarissa, and for more than 50 racingand cruising yachts ranging from 40-130 feet, GreenMarine is well placed to have built this innovative rudder. The company is one of the largest, most experiencedand technically advanced composite boatyards in theworld, specialising in working with carbon fibre.

covered in a tarpaulin under whichthey camped whilst moving it allthe way to from Rugby to themarina at Thames Ditton.Once at Thames Ditton, they beganfitting out the boat in earnest. It wasto have a marine plysuperstructure, the frames forwhich were fabricated by Don inhis picture framing workshop in thebasement of their house-come-bookshop in Islington, NorthLondon. Neither being able todrive, these were then carried ant-like by public transport – tube andtrain – to the marina. Only thesheets of marine ply came directlyto the boat, where they were hand-cut to fit. Once the cabin top wason – the windows hand-built by

Don - the same process continuedwith the interior fittings whichneeded fabrication – doors, bathroom and kitchen units and soon – and then being carried in thesame way. The whole remarkableproject took only two years, beingcompleted just in time forEdmund’s fiftieth birthday, by whichtime the boat had moved to a newmooring above Henley Bridge atSalters Boat Yard. Here a launch

come birthday party weekend washeld, the guests staying at theAnchor Inn, where dinner was heldon the Saturday night and a cake ofthe boat produced made by itschef, with ‘Happy BirthdayEdmund’ on the gunnel.

Balthazar was not just a canal-sidecountry cottageAfter about ten years on theThames, the boat was moved in1976 to a canal-side mooring onthe Aylesbury Arm of the GrandUnion Canal, just above AylesburyBasin where its home-mooringremained for the next thirty three years.

The story of Balthazar - Part 1 Part 1 - The story of Balthazar

After twenty yearsand more ofsellingnarrowboats onbrokerage, I am stillsurprised from

time to time by what comes along, and the fascinating stories that theowners have to tell about theirboats. After all, even today you haveto be somewhat different to be acanal boater.

Take for instance narrowboatBalthazar. I was asked last summerby one of ourmoorers if I couldhelp out with thesale of her sister’shusband’s boat.Although only in hissixties Paul hadbecome gradually incurably ill andnow could no longer use the boat, which had for the last year or morehad been lying unused on itsmooring on the Aylesbury Arm. Itwas, she told me, an unusual andsomewhat large old boat that hadbeen built in 1968, but had alwaysbeen well maintained and was nowall-steel. We normally don’t take onboats of that age. But seeing it wasDebbs, who smiled so sweetly, andhad moored her boat at BraunstonMarina more or less since I boughtthe place in 1988, I agreed to take iton, provided Paul would agree to

having the boat fully surveyed onarrival and any remedial workingbeing carried out to his account, prior to the boat going on sale. This matter she quickly sorted and Iwas now able to ring the sellerPaul, and talk to him at anappointed hour when with hismedication regime, he was wellenough to speak.

Balthazar, Paul told me had beenowned by his family since new. Itwas with great sorrow that he wasparting with it, as there was now no

one in his family totake it on. The boathad originally beenjointly owned by hisuncle one Don Bakerand partner EdmundFogden, and had

been given to him by Edmund in1998, a few years after Don haddied of a long-term illness in 1994.

The story of Balthazar’sconstruction was quite fascinating. It was the third of four boats thatthe partners had owned – the otherthree being sea-going - and hadbeen commissioned by them fromthe then very active Rugby Boats asa sort of sail-away in 1968. Whatthey bought was just the 60 ft trad.style hull, having no cabinsuperstructure. The fully installednew Lister SR3 engine was

positioned under the small sterncounter with some sort oftemporary throttle and othercontrols on a metal post screwed tothe deck. The remainder of the boatwas open to the elements and

The partners were keen gardenersand looked after the bank-side.They also enjoyed entertainingtheir friends, with good food andwine on offer.

However, Balthazar was not justa canal-side country cottage.During the summer months it wasextensively cruised and it isbelieved the partners visited everycanal and river navigation thenavailable, except the Leeds &Liverpool, which they felt their 60 ftboat was unsuitable for. They werealso regular attendees at rallies, andactive fund raisers for the IslingtonCommunity Boat Project, with itseccentric Crystal Hale very muchthe driving force. They attended herfuneral, when her coffin wascarried from Islington Basin toKensal Green Crematorium on theroof of Project’s boat Angel ofIslington. Going ahead was a anescort of canoeists from the localyouth club, each sporting a largeletter of her name on each side oftheir canoes. It was a fitting tributeto someone who, in her own way,had done so much for hercommunity.

In 1991 the decision was made togut the now twenty two year oldboat and almost start again. The whole of the woodensuperstructure and internal fittingsthey had so carefully made werescrapped, with only the stern doorssurviving and being reused. Thesuperstructure was to be made all-steel, ending the problems ofrotting timber and leaks. Also thelayout would almost be reversedfrom accommodation to the rear

and a workshop forward for Don’spicture framing, to a very traditionallayout of boatman’s cabin andengine room astern – the enginebeing moved from under thecounter - with sleepingaccommodation amidships andliving accommodation up forward. The combined services werechosen of engineer John Pattle ofBrentford and Roger Farringdon ofBraunston – John also helping with

the steel work. These two highlyskilled craftsmen were basedinterestingly at each end of theoriginal Grand Junction Canal, withthe works carried about half waybetween them in the AylesburyBasin, where the steel wasdelivered. The whole job was doneout in the open during the wintermonths. Roger Farringdon recalls,‘We used five mill’ steel on thesides and four on the top’. Newaluminum hopper windowsreplaced Don’s original pains-taking work, and the boat was givena new livery – the ‘sixties orange’ ofthe upper gunnels being replacedby easy-maintenance black. Thesign writing was stick-on vinyllettering, which has survivedremarkably well ever since. Theroses and castles to the forwardand side doors and the boatman’scabin table were by Jane Selkirkwho was then based on the OxfordCanal at Cropredy. Once again thefit out was painstakingly carried outby Don and Edmond, with theboatman’s cabin an astonishingachievement. To be continued…
