    A

fter 64 years and contacting a total of

359 countries and islands, world re-

    nowned amateur radio ham Dennis

Wells of Durbanville reached the pinnacle

    of his hobby.

Wells (85), whose call sign ZS1AU is well-

known in international radio ham circles,

has just received a #1 honour roll plaque

from the American Radio Relay League for

    achieving a full house.

A full house is the achievement of making

radio contact with each and every country

or island on the planet where a radio ama-

teur operates. In radio ham jargon they are

known as entities, due to the fact that some

are not countries as such, but barely more

than a rock sticking out of the water.

Dennis achieved his spot on the honour

roll despite a heart attack in September last

year and his computer crashing at the time

of an important DXpedition, which is a trip

to set up a radio relay in an area often re-

mote where few radio hams operate.

Additionally, a tropical storm caused a

DXpedition to a remote Pacific Ocean island

to be cancelled halfway through, and some

entities he had already contacted over the

years had been renamed, meaning he had to

    contact them again.

    Career highlight

When Dennis took TygerBurger into his

shack, which is what he calls his radio

equipment room at his house in The Pad-

    docks inBowlersAvenue, he enthusedabout

how lucky he was to make contact among

40 000 others. The suspense when dialling in

to a remote station was palpable. One could

almost feel the oceanmist on your face from

the 2007 DXpedition to the Scarborough reef

in the South China sea, a mere rock sticking

out of the ocean where a platform for the ra-

    dio station was built.

When a destination is so remote, nobody

ever goes there, these DXpeditions are or-

ganised to help radio hams all around the

world to be able to make contact. If youmiss

out on it, you may have to wait another 10

years for another opportunity, he explains.

Contacting Scarborough reef was one of

the highlights of his amateur radio career.

Another was a trip to Sable island in the

    NorthAtlanticOceannearCanada inMarch

2011, which he reached by using sixth sense

to tune in to the right frequency and recog-

nising thevoice of oneof the expedition team

    members after his computer crashed.

Sable island is the pinnacle of DXing in

    the world, he said.

He has been doing it for years, but the pos-

sibility of reaching a full house became a

realistic challenge when he was approached

in October 2010 by the awards manager and

    a field checker for theAmericanRadioRelay

League in South Africa. He was invited to

submit his application for free membership

    to theDXCenturyClub runby theAmerican

    Radio Relay League.

What transpired after that caused a big

splash in the records of our DXers in South

Africa and in 2011, he was awarded a DXCC

honour roll plaque for being within 10 of the

top of the total of 331 countries and islands

in the world the 10 most remote and most

    rare ones.

This in itself was a rare milestone in our

South African radio amateurs ability to get

this far. Hemanaged that with a total of 334

three more than what was necessary.

It takes decades or even longer to

achieve. He also reached another 19 coun-

tries, which no longer existed or were re-

    named, totalling 359 countries.

This is the highest total in Africa, and

reaching a full house is also a first for Cape

    Town.

How I got here is a miracle. I got the feel-

ing of Atlas when the world was lifted off his

    shoulders, he said.

The last six countries (entities) he reached

were Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Malpelo is-

land, Myanmar (previously Burma) and the

very last Mellish reef a mere sandbank on-

ly a few hundred metres long off the east

    coast of Australia.

The cost of this operation was about half

a million rand and was intended for ten

days, but a huge tropical storm caused them

to leave after only a week.

I got in their log book a few hours before

they left in a hurry! I was very, very fortu-

nate as theymade contact with over 40 thou-

sand stations and Iwas oneof them!he said.

If I did not get them, I would have missed

out on this #1 in the world award he said.

    T

he citys five landfill sites are rapid-

ly reaching capacity, but still there

is no obvious recycling plan inmany

    of the suburbs.

    According to Clive Justus, chairperson

of Subcouncil 4, the city has no mandate

to facilitate recycling, but they are en-

couraging people to do so, for their own

as well as the environments sake.

I dont bother to recycle, says one

Parow resident, because I would not

even know where to take everything. Be-

sides, the trolley people go through all the

trash and I suppose they will take what

    can be recycled.

But at the same time many residents

are complaining that the trolley people

make a mess and bring crime to the area.

According to Justus it is crucial that

    communities become mobilised toward

    recycling.

    There are many recycling pro-

grammes, he says. At the De Grendel

drop-off site next to Ajax you can dump

anything from garden refuse to building

rubble, oil, glass, e-waste (like batteries

and light bulbs), paper and even old furni-

ture. They have a very neat operation

    running there.

And what people do not know is that

you can buy material from them again. I

saw some bricks there that we want to

buy for the Goodwood Lions, to make

    some paving for the club.

    Someone also left window frames

there, complete with burglar bars. They

canbe put to gooduse again, says Justus.

Someone dumped an old double bed

    right outside my office.

What were they thinking? Here it will

be torn apart until the metal inside the

mattress canbe takenout and the restwill

    be left there.

Justus says in Pinelands and Hout Bay

almost 98% of residents take part in the

    recycling culture.

They put all dry refuse in see-through

plastic bags and the bergies come to col-

    lect the bags. The re-

    cycling company re-

    alised that the trolley

    people have a head

    start, they get to the

    bags first, sonow they

    pay them to collect

    the bags and take

    them to a collection

    point where the truck

picks up the bags. It is

    a very impressive so-

    lution.

    But, says Justus,

    mindsets still have to

    change in the north-

    ern suburbs.

    We had a pilot

    study some time ago

in Durbanville, where we provided 44 000

green bins for recycling. All you had to

do was to collect the bin and put all your

dry waste inside. But only 11 000 bins

were collected. In the end we had to drop

the rest off at 33 000 households.

He says there was almost no effort ex-

pected from the people who took part in

this study, because they didnot evenhave

to sort the recyclables out. It all went to

Bloekombos, a world class sorting and re-

    cycling plant.

According to the department of Sus-

tainability at the University of Stellen-

bosch, at least 50% of refuse can be recy-

    cled.

    And, says Justus, almost everything

    else can be composted.

At Grand West there is a worm farm.

All the biodegradables are put in there

and then it is digested by the earthworms.

The worms are all too happy there! And

the liquid the worms produce is drained

to a tap and that liquid, a very potent ferti-

liser, is sold again by the litre, he says.

    Where can you to go

    to recycle?

    V De Grendel drop-

    off facility on the cor-

    ner of 5th Avenue and

    Bertie Genade Street,

    Parow as well as the

    Welgelegen site in

per. Cape Waste Paper will also buy back

plastic. You can drop-off paper at Isolite

    realised that the trolley

    people have a head start,

    T

hrough her role as an early literacy

    trainer for the Nalibali reading-

    for-enjoyment campaign, Portia

Daniso from Kraaifontein gets to do

what she loves best: ignite a love of read-

ing among South Africas youth, as well

    as the adults around them.

When children read or hear stories,

it stretches their imagination and opens

up new worlds for them. They are ex-

posed to new situations and places and

learn to think for themselves, boosting

their self-esteem and confidence in the

    classroom, Daniso says.

Inspired by her own experiences as a

young girl listening to the intsomi or

    fairytales her grandmother would tell

her in the evenings, Daniso is excited by

the power of books and stories to spark

    all childrens potential andhelp thembe-

    come better learners at school.

    Head start

    Research has shown, children who

read or share stories with a caregiver or

loved ones before they start school, real-

ly have a head start in school and life

as this activity helps to develop their

    emotional and intellectual intelligence,

    Daniso explains.

Growing up in Kraaifontein, I real-

ised thatnot all the children inmyneigh-

    bourhood enjoyed the same storytelling

experiences I had, and it became impor-

tant to me to give back, she continues.

Motivated by a commitment to commu-

nity upliftment, Daniso started her ca-

reer in literacy as an Early Childhood

    Development practitioner. She was

    drawn to theNalibali campaignbecause

of its focus on reading for enjoyment

as children who have enjoyable story-

telling and reading experiences at home

are more likely to be motivated to read.

Now she is a training support officer

for PRAESA (the Project for the Study of

    Alternative Education in South Africa),

which has over 20 years in community

literacy development and is driving the

    Nalibali campaign together with part-

ners. Daniso trains men and women of

all ages in English and isiXhosa on how

to engage children, including babies and

infants, with books and stories in every-

    day life.

    Sometimes, reading aloud and shar-

ing stories with children can take a bit

of getting used to, especially if the adults

we work with havent had any practice,

but it doesnt take long before they are

surprised by how easy and fun it is.

    No talent needed

The best part for me is when people

realise that anyone of any age or lan-

guage can do it and that no special skills

or talents are needed. And, we dont only

show them how to tell stories or get chil-

dren excited about books and reading,

we also demonstrate things like writing,

singing songs and playing games related

to literacy. So its always a lot of fun.

Not content with simply training oth-

ers, Daniso has formed a reading club of

her own. She encourages children and

    caregivers from across Kraaifontein to

attend her club at no cost sometimes

with as many as 60 children attending

    each week.

But Daniso doesnt mind, saying she

is motivated by the smiles on their faces

and the enthusiasm the children bring

    to the reading club sessions.

Danisos club meets at 14:00 at the Ol-

    ungje Homebase Educare every Satur-

day. Attendance is free. Contact Daniso

on 084 807 1145 should you or your child

    wish to attend.

Indigenous Africanis a perfect rainbow nation dog

    JENNIFER DAVIES

    There are very few

    true canine landraces

    left in the world, and

    South Africa can be

proud to have one of them, the Africanis.

Youwill likely have seen them in rural ar-

    eas graceful, well-balanced dogs with

smooth coats in a multitude of colours and

    patterns over long, lean-muscled limbs.

TheAfricanis dog is a landrace a result

of centuries of natural selection and adapta-

tion. Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-

hounds or labradors have been created by

humans choosing specific traits such as

hunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-

tively bred for uniform behaviour and ap-

    pearance. However, as

    soon as you standard-

    ise a landrace with se-

    lective breeding it be-

    comes a breed, not a

    landrace. Africanis

    dogs are not uniform in

appearance as it is an umbrella term for a

    few different strains.

They are generally medium-sized with a

slender build, wedge-shaped heads and long

muzzles. Their short coats are usually light-

brown, but can be brindled or patched. Some

    also have a ridgeback.

A feature common to them all is their ex-

pressive faces and beautiful, soulful eyes

    ringed with black eyeliner markings.

They are agile, hardy, fast, very alert and

tend to have very few health problems.

But it is their personality that makes the

    Africanis really special. Having evolved

alongside people, they tend to be exception-

    ally good-natured, even-tempered, loyal and

    protective.

If you want a dog perfectly adapted to our

climate, generally issue free, and a wonder-

ful companion, protector, and friend, then

adopt an Africanis or Africanis-mix dog.

    You will never look back.

    The Fisantekraal AnimalWelfare has sev-

eral Africanis-type dogs for adoption. The

adoption fee is R500 for adult dogs. This in-

    cludes spaying or neutering, vaccinations

    and deworming.

    L

ocal police are hosting a spin-a-

thon this Saturday to involve the

    public in their upcoming bicycle

tour along the west coast later this year.

The tour, now in its third year and the

only one of its kind in theWestern Cape,

aims to raise much needed funds for the

South African Police Service (SAPS) Ed-

    ucation Trust.

We invite members of the public to

join us and to come sweat with us. A 30

minute spinning session at the spinath-

on will cost you R50 and all the money

will go toward the fund, not to mention

the solidarity of our community, which

will go a long way in our preparation for

the tour, said W/O Ronald Kuhn.

    Worthy cause

    The spinathonwill take place between

09:00 and 16:30 at the new Brackenfell

    Centre (Pick n Pay).

We hope to attract hundreds of fellow

cyling enthusiasts to assist us with this

worthy cause, while the members them-

selves will spin for the last session be-

tween 16:30 and 17:00, he says, adding

that prizes and lucky draws will take

    place throughout the day.

The actual cycle tour sets off on 11 Sep-

tember for aweek of cycling between the

    West coast and Cape Town.

    Several members of the Brackenfell

    and Kraaifontein police stations will

    take part in it.

The SAPS Education Trust was estab-

lished in 2010 to benefit children whose

parents have died in the line of duty.

Often time these officers died fairly

young and in most cases it was almost

impossible for their families to live on

    their pension payouts, especially when

    it comes to tertiary education.

When the fund was launched a few

years ago, then Police minister Nathi

    Mthethwa stressed that no monetary

value couldbeplacedon the lives of slain

    police officers.

However, he said that the best legacy

would be to invest in the education of the

    children of these policemen.

    Highest contributor

An amount of R56 000 was raised

through last years cycle tour, and local

members aim to better this by raising

    R100 000 this year.

Lt Gen Arno Lamoer, who accepted

the cheque at a gala event in June last

year, thanked cyclists for their initia-

tive and confirmed that the Western

Cape Provincial Police is the highest

contributor to this fund to date.

Wehave donatedR200 000 so far, with

    the other provincial police departments

in the country not having contributed a

cent as yet, he said at the time.

He stated that he would make sure

that the children of fallen policemen in

the Western Cape benefit from the fund

in order to complete school and tertiary

    education.

V Those interested to join local policemen at the

Spinathon on Saturday may contact Ronald

    Kuhn on 082 821 0551.

    Tieners is soosCharlesDickens seA ta-

    Volgenshomontstaankonflik asdie ver-

antwoordelikheid wat ouers van hul tie-

ners verwag, nie ooreenstem met die vry-

    heid wat tieners vra nie.

Ouers wil h hul kinders moet verant-

woordelikheid h as hulle uit die huis

gaan, maar hulle moet dit rens leer.

Wat is dit wat kinders moet bemeester

op reis van kind na volwassene?

Tieners moet aanpas by n veranderen-

gaan.

    skappe. Dit het n baie

    groot invloed op hul waar-

    desisteme en is die sement

    vanbelangrike aspekte van

    hul eie identiteit. Terself-

    dertyd verwag die samele-

    wing kinders moet beweeg

    in die rigting vanmeer ver-

    antwoordelikheid en vol-

    wassenheid, s Theron.

    Ons plaas baie druk op

    ons kinders en verwag hul-

    le moet op 17-jarige ouer-

dom kies wat hulle vir die

    res van hul lewens moet

    doen.

los. Dit impliseer n verandering in rol,

    het hy ges.

Vir ouers is daar vyf basiese take. Jy

As jy

nie daaraan werk nie, het jy niks.

Omtrent alles in jou tiener se wreld

verander jou liefdemoet nie een daarvan

wees nie. Ouers moet hul tieners monitor

afspraak as jul albei besig is.

    Ouersmoet asmentor op-

tree en betrokke bly en be-

wus wees van hul kind se

    doen en late, sy/haar skool-

    werk en punte ennaskoolse

    aktiwiteite, asook hul

    vriendskappe en verhou-

    dings met ander volwasse-

    nes.

    Die fokus verskuif egter

    van direkte monitering na

    indirekte monitering deur

    gesprekke, kommunikasie

    en terugvoer.

    Gesinsrels is ook steeds

    belangrik. Rels oor vei-

    ligheid is byvoorbeeld ononderhandel-

baar, terwyl rels soos huistake, slaap- en

    inkomtye onderhandel kan word.

Theron het ges dont sweat the small

stuff. Ouersmoetweetwat om te laat gaan.

Loosen up, but dont let go, s hy.

    voeding.

A young woman from Brackenfell, Danielle

Jacobs, has been awarded a bursary from

    TheCapeWinemakersGuild to helpher pur-

sue her dreams of becoming a winemaker.

Danielle is one of four oenology and cel-

lar technology students at the Elsenburg

Agricultural College who have received Cape

    Winemakers Guild bursaries.

    The CapeWinemakers Guild Billy Hofmeyr

    halia Matshete from Gauteng.

Danielles goal is to be in a position where

I am able to educate other young, aspiring wi-

    nemakers.

With previous industry experience and an

enthusiasm for winemaking, she wants to de-

velop her own style of wine with the knowled-

ge that she gains through her studies.

    After graduating, these aspiring winema-

kers will be able to apply for the three-year

    internshipwith theCapeWinemakersGuild

    Protg programme.

It is a great opportunity for the students

to gain insight into the industry and work

alongside some of the countys best winema-

kers. The Cape Winemakers Guild Protg

Programme was launched in 2006 with the

support of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers

    Piepklein waterskilpadjie het

    verlede week sy opwagting ge-

    maak op n teerpad inVierlanden,

    Durbanville.

Dit was skaars groter as n R5-muntstuk.

reuk afgeskei. Dit het verskriklik ge-

stink kompleet soos seewater.

Ek is nou nie so n groot diereliefheb-

ople to be careful when banking.

They are appealing to bank customers to

refrain from carrying large sums of cash in

order to lessen their exposure to the risk of

    being robbed.

Criminals look out for people making lar-

ge cash withdrawals inside bank branches

then rob them when they leave the bank or

are en route to their destination.

Absa has through Sabric been educating

the public on the dangers of carrying cash.

The bank places a place a high premium

on their customers andurge them to observe

the following general tips for carrying cash

safely and avoid becoming victims of crime

    when leaving the bank:

    VBe observant of your surroundingswhen

carrying large sums of cash. If you believe

you are being followed, report to the police

    immediately

VDo not allow anyone to distract you and

    avoid social conversations with strangers

VAvoid informing people (even close asso-

ciates) that you are going to draw or deposit

    money at a bank

VThe amount of money you have should

be a secret. Boasting about it may put you

    at risk

VDo not carry cash in bank bags, briefca-

ses or any manner that will make it obvious

to strangers as this make you a target of at-

    tacks

VDont carry more cash on you than you

    actually need

    VAvoid carrying personal valuables such

as cell phones, laptops and wallets to banks

    Be vigilant when banking

    ie mediese noodhulpdiens ER24 s n

    gevaarlikenuwe foefiewaarinkinders

    waarin mense meestal kinders mekaar

Hy s as deel van hul

brand steek. Di video het meer as 100 000

trefslae gekry, sWerner. Hy s diemees on-

    Werkloosheidsvlakke in

    Suid-Afrika is baie hoog. Dit

    beteken gesinne sonder inkom-

    ste en armoede.

    Daar is n aantal oplossings

    wat die probleem doeltreffend

    kan aanspreek.

    Suid-Afrikaners is oor

    dekades bekend vir hulle

    vindingrykheid.

    Goeie onderwys is die eerste

    groot stap wat noodsaaklik is

    om n inkomste te verseker.

    Prof. Jonathan Jansen het

    onlangs die boek Fixing our

    schools in South Africa geskryf.

    Die boek ontleed die onder-

    wys-situasie in Suid-Afrika

volledig en hy kom as onder-

    wyskundige met waardevolle

    en konstruktiewe oplossings.

n Studie is gedoen om 19

    suksesvolle skole in die nege

    provinsies van Suid-Afrika te

    identifiseer. Die meerderheid

    kom uit townships.

    Daar is ook n gestruktureer-

    de proses van werksessies om

    skoolhoofde en onderwysers

    wat belangstel, deur n ekspo-

    nensile leerskool te neem om

    n vernuwingsproses in die

    onderwys teweeg te bring.

    Die uitdaging van Christene

    in sleutelposisies is om di

boek te bekom, te bestudeer en

    leiers in die onderwys te

    bevriend.

    Wanneer n brug gebou is,

    moet die goeie nuus versprei

    word om sodoende n geleent-

heid te benut om ons onderwys

    suksesvol te hervorm.

On Friday 18 July I returned

    after spending an enjoyable

    holiday with my family in

    Florida, USA.

On the way from the airport,

    travelling along Mike Pienaar

    Boulevard, we came across a

    group of homeless people.

It could have been 10 or 20

    people sheltering under the

    bridge with little cover except

    for bits of cardboard and

    plastic.

What can be done to help

    these people? Even my dog

Hy het n groot, swart harde-

Ek gee hom n groot sak klere

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Optrede van

    sterk vroue

    weer gedenk

    Hierdie hoofartikel handel skaamteloos

oor vroue natuurlik in die lig van

Saterdag, Vrouedag. Di dag gedenk 9

Augustus 1956 toe vroue reg oor die land

teen die pasboeke protes aangeteken het.

Dit stem ooreen met wat Marilyn

Monroe ges het: Well behaved women

rarely make history.

Syt ook opgemerk: Women who wants

to be equal to men, lack ambition, maar

gelukkig het vroue lankal di les geleer.

n Anonieme vrou word op die internet

aangehaal: Heres to strong women: may

we know them, may we be them, may we

    raise them. Sela.

Albert Einstein sluit hierby aan: A

woman who follows the crowd will

usually not go further than the crowd. A

woman who walks alone, is likely to find

herself in places no-one has been before.

    Ongeag jou persoonlike mening, vroue

Oscar

Wilde het dt verstaan: Women are

meant to be loved, not to be understood.

van Aristotle Onassis: If women didnt

exist, all the money in the world would

    have no meaning!

People who photograph a rare object or en-

    dangered species with their cellphones

    could inadvertently assist criminals or

    poachers.

Geotagging, a function on smart phones

and tablets that adds geographical informa-

tion to the photographs and videos one

takes, can be retrieved by criminals when

viewing the footage on social websites.

Geotagging lets viewers know where a

picture was taken. While this is great for a

beautiful view, its a risk for endangered

    wildlife, explains Ettienne Jacques Kyler,

the biodiversity area coordinator of the

    Blaauwberg region.

    Roy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of the

    Friends of theBlaauwbergConservationAr-

ea, adds that this does not only apply to en-

dangered animals, but any rare items.

There are a number of critically endan-

gered plants and medicinal plants in the re-

    serve.Geotagging can lead someone straight

to historical or cultural artefacts. There has

been theft of Battle of Blaauwberg items

from the battlefield before. Geotagging can

even lead someone to a collection of paint-

ings in private homes, says Fuller-Gee.

    Kyler says some technology automatical-

ly records the GPS location for every image

one takes, information included when up-

    loaded to the web.

On smart phones, geotagging is automat-

ically turned on, so you have to turn it off

if you dont want to reveal the location of all

your pictures. On an iPhone you press Set-

tings and select General, then Location

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,

is it theirs?Andwhat if amember of the pub-

lic then takes thevagrants bag? Is that theft?

These questions came to the fore after a

Parklands woman recently seized a va-

grants bag and refused to give it back.

    Outgoing community police forum chair-

person Andrew Brace, and previous princi-

pal inspector of the Displaced Peoples Unit

(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the matter

    to TygerBurger.

If you put something into the municipal

refuse bin with the intention of throwing it

away and move the bin off your property

then the contents of the bin belongs to the

City of Cape Town. While the bin is on your

property it still belongs to you.

He says amember of the public has as little

right to take a vagrants bag as it is for the

vagrant to take something out of the dustbin

    and putting it in there.

In such a situation Aldridge says it is best

to notify the police, who are within their

rights to seize the bag. It is up to the street

person to prove that whatever is in that bag

belongs to him or her, he continues.

One thing is certain, members of the pub-

lic should be very careful they dont subject

themselves to a charge of assault while they

try to remove a bag, which in reality does

    not belong to them.

Brace says the DPU can remove a variety

    of items from vagrants.

With 35 years of hits to choose from, French

pianis, Richard Clayderman will be sharing

some of his repertoire with South African

    audiences in October.

    It has been 25 years

    since the legendary musi-

    cian has played in the

    country.

    Richard said he has

    been contacted from time

to time in the past to per-

    formhere butwhile he en-

    joys South Africa, his

    schedule didnt allow for

    shows. This time, promot-

    er Louis vanWyk contact-

    ed him well in advance

    and Richard says its

thanks to him that hell be

    returning.

At the age of just 12, the

    world-famous performer

    was accepted into the

    prestigiousmusic college,

    Conservatoire de Paris.

He was on his way to a promising career

as a classical pianist when his father fell ill,

forcing him to take a job as a bank clerk and

    accompanist to contemporary bands to

    shoulder the financial responsibilities.

His big break came in 1976, when he beat

20 other pianists auditioning to play Bal-

lade pour Adeline, a song written by Paul

    de Senneville.

Back then though, Clayderman was still

performing under his real name, Philippe

Pags. Together with Paul and producer, Ol-

ivier Toussaint, Richard took on his grand-

mothers surname, to avoid his name being

    mispronounced.

Ballade pour Adeline, which Paul wrote

for his new daughter, went on to sell 34 mil-

    lion copies in 38 countries.

Since then, Clayderman has recorded 1300

melodies and his soft touch and romantic

style have earned him the title, The Prince

of Romance, a nickname given him by

former United States first lady Nancy Rea-

    gan.

    Richard says he thanks

    God every day for the

    chance to perform in so

    many countries for so

    many years. When asked

    what keeps him inspired,

    he says: There are hun-

    dreds and thousands of

    talented pianists in the

world who do not have the

    chance to play in concert

    or record some albums in

    studios so.... how could I

    not be inspired to play?

    With such a long career

    behind him, Richard has

    many favourite songs and

    moments, but at the mo-

    ment, he finds a special

    pleasure in performing

    You raise me up.

A long career doesnt mean Richard has

    stoppedworkingonhis craft though.He says

rehearsing is somewhat of an addiction for

    him.

Capetonians can see Richard perform at

the GrandWest Grand Arena on Thursday 9

    October, supported by local instrumental

    pop band, Sterling EQ.

Richard says he is looking forward to

    South Africas people and nature.

If people today are as gentle and nice as

they used to be years ago, it will bemy pleas-

ure to be back in South Africa.

ning to South Africa in October.

Following the success of last years Wo-

mens Day production, Cape Town City

Ballet has a performance of Threes Com-

    pany on Saturday 9 August.

This year, the company invited two

    other leading Cape Town-based dance

    companies, Jazzart Dance Theatre and

    theCapeDanceCompany, to join the cele-

    brations.

In the spirit of cooperation and unity,

all the stars of dance in Cape Town will

be together for the first time and the pro-

gramme of three individual works will

showcase the talents of three young

    South African choreographers. Jazzart

will perform Tracing Past 2 Future Tso-

ha by Moeketsi Koena, Of Gods and Men

by Kirsten Isenberg will be performed by

Cape Town City Ballet and Scenes by

Bradley Shelver by Cape Dance Compa-

    ny.

    Koena says throughhisworkhewishes

to entertain, inform and educate people

    on self-appreciation. The dancers have

translated their personal stories into se-

veral vignettes reflecting how their past

engages with the present, and how their

interpretation of events affect the future.

    Movements from street dance styles,

African contemporary, as well as self-

composed texts have influenced and cla-

rified the work. Tsoha (Awakening in

Sesotho) aims to convey the individual

journeys of a group of people, connected

in dance, at a pivotal stage of taking hold

    of their dreams.

    OfGods andMen recently premiered as

part of Cape Town City Ballets producti-

on, Ballet Beautiful. With music by Ar-

mand Amar and Philip Rombi, the work

    draws from Greek mythology.

    The critically acclaimed Scenes by

    Bradley Shelver is amodern,minimalist,

architectural ballet in four parts written

to the compositions of Gallasso, Bach,
