Another scam that has been doing the rounds involves pensioners and those re- ceiving grants being eligible for special “food hampers”. A victim from Bishop Lavis, who did not want to be named, explained how they were approached by a well-dressed woman armed with what looked like very official folders and forms. “She was very pleasant and explained how ‘SASSA’ was supplying households on grants with food hampers every month.” “She was so convincing that we filled out the forms with her. She even left with a neighbour who visited to take her to other pensioners in the area. “Then the surprise came at the end of the month when my money was short. After in- vestigation it was found that airtime had been bought as in similar scams. It’s so sad when crooks take advantage of us old peo- ple.” V To page 2. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, station com-mander of Delft SAPS, was very upset thatthese scamsters were taking advantage ofsenior citizens in this manner but moreconcerned that the victims were not re-porting it.

“Wemust bemade aware of these scamsthat are in the areas,” he said.

“Too many people think that it is notworth reporting because of the amount in-volved from each individual, but is isfraud and still a crime. The more peoplethey scam the more money they are mak-ing but we must be made aware of it.

“We urge other victims who have expe-rienced this to report it as soon as possibleat their nearest police station.”

At the time of going to press we werestill awaiting comment from SASSA.

In the light of the murders, attempted mur-ders and shootings which have taken placeover the past few weeks in Bonteheuwel, po-lice have been hard at work tracking downthe culprits.

Bishop Lavis police, with welcome assist-ance from the public, last week managed toarrest one of the suspects, who is a well-known 21-year-old gang member from Bon-teheuwel Avenue.

On Tuesday 22 July officers were busyconducting crime prevention duties in thearea at about 12:00 when they received infor-mation about a shotgun that was apparentlybeing kept in a house in Bonteheuwel Ave-nue.

They immediately responded to the infor-mation and went to search the premiseswhere they saw the suspect holding a bag.

When he spotted the police he immediate-ly started running and threw the bag into aneighbouring yard.

Police caught up with him and he was tak-en into custody when the bag was found tocontain an unlicensed firearmwith the seri-al number removed, and ammunition.

At the same time, officers were also busywith operations in Mahogany Street, ahotspot in recent weeks due to gangs arefighting each other.

When officers spotted a known gangmem-ber standing in the area they stopped nextto him.

As one of the officers got out of the vehicleshe noticed an item on his left side, but heimmediately started running away.

Police caught up with him and arrestedhimwhen anunlicensed firearmand ammu-nition was found on his person.

The serial number from this weapon wasalso removed and in both cases the gunswere loaded and ready to be used.

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,is it theirs?Andwhat if amember of the pub-lic then takes thevagrant’s bag? Is that theft?

These questions came to the fore after aParklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.

Outgoing community police forum chair-person Andrew Brace, and previous princi-pal inspector of the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the matterto TygerBurger.

“If you put something into the municipalrefuse bin andmove the bin off your proper-ty then the contents of the bin belongs to theCity of Cape Town. While the bin is on yourproperty it still belongs to you.”

He says a person has as little right to takea vagrants bag as it is for the vagrant to takesomething out of the bin.

In such a situation Aldridge says it is bestto notify the police, who are within theirrights to seize the bag. “It is up to the streetperson to prove that whatever is in that bagbelongs to him or her,” he continues.

“One thing is certain, members of the pu-blic should be very careful they don’t subjectthemselves to a charge of assault while theytry to remove a bagwhich in reality does notbelong to them.”

Brace says the DPU can remove a varietyof items from vagrants. “These include any-thing that can be used to erect a structureor shelter for possible unlawful occupationof city owned land; shopping trolleys andcarts; andanything else thatmight be stolen.

A Silversands resident is recovering from atraumatic smash-and-grab incident nearMitchells Plain.

Natasha Smith, the wife of karate senseiGavin Smith, was on her way to visit herbrother in hospital in Mitchells Plain whenthe attack occurred.

The incident happened on Tuesday 29 Ju-ly, Gavin told TygerBurger this week.

“My daughter and I were at a karate ses-sion that I give in Mitchells Plain. My wifedecided to go visit her brother in hospital af-ter dropping us off. She did not feel too welland asked a friend to take her there,” Gavinexplained.

Natasha and her friend stopped at a set oftraffic lights at the AZ Berman and R30 0crossing when a unknown man approachedthem.

“A guy came towards the window. Shethought he was begging,” he said.

Seconds later the window shattered.“He grabbed her bag which was on her

lap.”According to Gavin a struggle ensued be-

tween his wife and the robber.“He was obviously stronger than her. The

strap of the bag broke and he (the robber)

ran towards the bushes,” Gavin said.He said all of his wife’s valuables were in

the bag.“We now have to endure all the hassle of

changing the locks. The keys to the housewere in the bag, a letter with our postal ad-dress as well,” said Gavin.

Natasha’s wallet with some cash, and heridentity book was also in the bag.

“The money was money that she had col-lected that same evening,” he said. He saida list of collections for karate students want-ing to travel to the SA Championship in Jo-hannesburg was also taken.

“There was at least R800 on the list.”Natasha injured her hand during the at-

tack. Some of the glass splinters also scarredher face.

“She is not over the event yet. Emotionallyshe is not doing well, the incident is stillplaying in her mind,” said Gavin.

The matter was reported to the police, whooffered trauma counselling, added Gavin.

Gavin himself went to visit the scene thenext day.

“It was shocking what I saw in the bush.I saw a few bags lying there, this seems tobe happening a lot in that area.

“We personally never knew that that spotwas a hotspot for smash-and-grabs,” Gavinsaid.

Indigenous Africanis aperfect rainbow nation dogJENNIFER DAVIES

There are very fewtrue canine landracesleft in the world, andSouth Africa can beproud to have one of them, the Africanis. You will undoubtedly have seen them

whendriving in rural areas – graceful,well-balanced dogswith smooth coats in amulti-tude of colours and patterns over long, lean-muscled limbs. If you have met one, you will almost cer-

tainly remember their intelligence, alert-ness, friendliness and gentle natures. The Africanis dog is a “landrace” – a re-

sult of natural selection and adaptationthroughout the centuries.Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-

hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred to get a uniform behaviour andappearance. Some breeds were landracesbred in an attempt at standardisation. However, as soon as you standardise a

landracewith selective breeding it becomesa breed, not a landrace.Africanis dogs are not uniform in appear-

ance as it is an umbrella term for a few dif-ferent “strains”.They are generally medium-sized with a

functional, slender build, wedge-shapedheads and long muzzles. Their short coatsareusually light-brown, but canbebrindledor patched. Some also have a “ridgeback”.A feature common to them all is their

highly expressive faces and beautiful, soul-ful eyes ringed with black “eyeliner”mark-ings.They are agile, hardy and fast, as well as

very alert and tend to have very few healthproblems.

But it is in the per-sonality category thatthe Africanis reallyexcels. Because theyhave evolved along-side people, they tendto be exceptionally

good-natured and even-tempered, as well asbeing loyal and protective. If youwant a dogwho is perfectly adapted

to our climate, generally issue free, and awonderful companion, protector, andfriend, then adopt an Africanis or Afri-canis-mix dog. You will never look back. The Fisantekraal Animal Welfare has

severalAfricanis-type dogs up for adoption.Their adoption fee is R500 for adult dogs. This includes spaying or neutering, vacci-nations and deworming.Phone 084 505 2324 or send an email to in-

Themanagement at theGoodwoodCorrecti-onal facility is on a mission to rehabilitatemore than just the prisoners at their facili-ty.Last week Elnor Primary was surprised

when the team from the facility arrived atthe school, led by a truck and bulldozer aswell as an entourage armed with weed-ea-ters, shovels and pitchforks who were on amission to make a difference at the schoolin Elsies River.“Its about much more than our Mandela

Month activities,” explained Nomalizo Ma-ni, head of the centre.“Elnor Primary was adopted by Good-

wood Management Area after one of our of-ficials in the management area was contri-buting on a monthly basis towards the fee-ding scheme from his own pocket. This hasresulted in the Management Area adoptingthe school in order to take this initiative fur-ther.”She pointed out that shortly after this de-

cision was taken they went to the school toascertain what challenges are prevailing at

the school.“When the Management Area put toge-

ther a year plan of all projects, Elnor Prima-ry was on the plan,” she continued.“That is why were were at the school last

week to embark on a cleaning project thatwill also include rehabilitation of somebuil-dings that had burnt down.“We’ve startedby cutting the grass and re-

moving rubble in the playground. Eventual-ly we want to make it a special place for thelearners.”Part of the activity on the day involved

serving soup to the children at the schoolanddonating anewweed eater to the school,as well as replacing toilet seats in the ladiestoilet.“Wealso donated school uniforms to them

(shirt, trousers and shoes) and I would liketo thank all the personnel involved who do-nated to the project from their own poc-kets,” said Mani.“It’s about more than being part of Madi-

ba month. We are adhering to the call madeby the State President during his state of thenation address, that the month of Julyshould be a month of cleaning our country, but we will be doing more at this school.”

Teacher Duncan Isaacs, one of the facili-tators of the group, said that the learnerswho are part of Soulbuddy’swere adamantthat they wanted to do something specialfor the seniors as part ofMandelaDay acti-vities.“These learners wanted to do something

special for their grandparents,” he said.“In many cases these grandparents are

the primary care-givers for the learnersand that is why we wanted to make themfeel special.

“In fact the whole school played a partin this day and I want to thank all the Gra-de 7 learners, the parents and the teachersfor playing their part inmaking this a spe-cial day for them.”Apart from the delicious treats that we-

the Advancement of the South African Con-stitution, said UWC spokesperson Aidanvan den Heever.Among Asmal’s various accolades, he is

perhaps best remembered as a staunch hu-man rights activist and national CabinetMinister.Asmal passed away in June 2011 after suf-

fering a severe heart attack.“ProfessorAsmal devoted his life to secur-

those who make a contribution to humanrights and civil liberties in communities, weaim to affirm the importance of civil liber-ties in our society,” he said. Before he started his speech, Manuel

thanked Asmal for various important con-tributions to the country and world. In his speech, Manuel cited Asmal as an

African debate should not be a narrow oneabout civil liberties, but rather a discussionon the quality of the “democratic project”.Manuel ended his lecture by saying citi-

zens have an obligation to ensure that dis-cussions like the Kader Asmal lecture –about law, rights, the strength of our democ-racyand thequality of life of ordinarypeople– should not become or remain “the pre-serve of a small elite”.

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album, which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.

“I strongly believe that there’s a time foreverything,” Hyram says, adding: “Whenit’s time for my music, there’s time for mymusic.”V Hyram’s album is available from NueLight Productions on 072 133 2370 or [email protected] more information about him, visit his Facebook page.V Hyram visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of his music. People who photograph a rare object or en-dangered species with their cellphonescould inadvertently assist criminals orpoachers.“Geotagging”, a function on smart phonesand tablets that adds geographical informa-tion to the photographs and videos one ta-kes, can be retrieved by criminals when vie-wing the footage on social websites.

“Geotagging lets viewers know where apicture was taken. While this is great for abeautiful view, it’s a risk for endangeredwildlife,” explains Ettienne Jacques Küyler, the Biodiversity Area Coordinator of theBlaauwberg region.Roy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of theFriends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, adds that this does not only apply toendangered animals, but any rare items.“There are anumber of critically endange-red plants andmedicinal plants in the reser-

ve. Geotagging can lead someone straight tohistorical or cultural artefacts. There hasbeen theft of Battle of Blaauwberg itemsfrom the battlefield before. Geotagging caneven lead someone to a collection of pain-tings in private homes,” says Fuller-Gee.Küyler says some technology automatical-ly records the GPS location for every imageone takes, information included when uplo-aded to the web.“On smart phones, geotagging is automa-tically turned on, so you have to turn it off

if you don’t want to reveal the location of allyour pictures. On an iPhone you press ‘Settings’ and se-lect ‘General’, then ‘Location Services’. Dis-able the applications that make use of GPSinformation. On Blackberry, select the camera icon.Press ‘Menu’, followed by ‘Options’. Set thegeotagging option to ‘Disabled’ and save.OnAndroid activate the camera and pressthe settings button. Turn off ‘Geotagging’ or‘Location Storage’.”

Werkloosheidsvlakke inSuid-Afrika is baie hoog. Ditbeteken gesinne sonder inkom-ste en armoede.Daar is ’n aantal oplossings

wat die probleem doeltreffendkan aanspreek.Suid-Afrikaners is oor

Wanneer ’n brug gebou is,

On Friday 18 July I returnedto a cold and wet Cape Townafter spending an enjoyableholiday with my family inFlorida, USA.On the way from the airport,

travelling along Mike PienaarBoulevard, we came across agroup of homeless people. It could have been 10 or 20

people sheltering under thebridge with little cover exceptfor bits of cardboard andplastic. What can be done to help

these people? Even my dogsleeps in a nice, warm bed.

’n Week gelede lui ’n bruinman – ligte vel, bleskop, effensoorgewig, dalk so in sy laat40’s en Engelssprekend – myvoordeurklokkie in Brackenfell-hoogte.Hy stel homself bekend as

Patrick Maleme, maar ek weet

Wees op die uitkykvir ondankbare man

nie of dit sy werklike naam isnie.Hy het ’n groot, swart harde-

bandboek by hom, waarin ’nmens kan opskryf as jy ’ndonasie wil maak. In die boekis ’n getikte brief wat “beves-tig” dat hy aangestel is omdonasies in te vorder virbehoeftiges – for the needy.Ek gee hom ’n groot sak klere

Wees bedag vir hierdie man.

Ongelukkig beteken sy ondank-bare optrede nou dat ek nie vanverdere hulp sal wees aanpersone wat by my aanklop nie.Ek sal voortaan uiters versigtigwees aan wie ek skenkingsdoen.

The murder of four-year-oldTaegrin Morris from ReigerPark, Johannesburg, wouldalmost certainly not havehappened if the traffic policingdemanded for many years bymy Road Safety Action Cam-paign (RSAC) had been inplace. In addition, if the other road

safety measures demandedsince 2005 by the RSAC were inplace, the country’s roadcarnage could have beenreduced by up to 90%.Those who failed to act

include the ANC government, all opposition political partiesand the public protector – all ofwhom were approached repeat-

edly but failed to act.Currently only the DA has

responded, but has not yetimplemented the requiredmeasures in the province orcity where it exercises politicalcontrol. The RSAC calls on all South

Africans to support action toend our road carnage. Thosewho wish to assist may call meon 082 098 9552.

SLICE OF LIFE

Monroe gesê het: “Well behaved womenrarely make history.” Sy’t ook opgemerk: “Women who wants

to be equal to men, lack ambition,” maargelukkig het vroue lankal dié les geleer.’n Anonieme vrou word op die internet

aangehaal: “Here’s to strong women: maywe know them, may we be them, may weraise them.” Sela.Albert Einstein sluit hierby aan: “A

woman who follows the crowd willusually not go further than the crowd. Awoman who walks alone, is likely to findherself in places no-one has been before.”Ongeag jou persoonlike mening, vroue

OscarWilde het dít verstaan: “Women aremeant to be loved, not to be understood.”En die laaste wyse woorde oor wat

If women didn’texist, all the money in the world wouldhave no meaning!”

of two cities.

“Dis ’n intense proses.

Tinus van Zyl by 083 289 4985.

The UCT/MRC Research Unit for ExerciseScience and Sports Medicine, based at theSports Science Institute in Newlands, is re-cruiting research volunteers for a study onthe psycho-physiological determinants ofpacing during prolonged endurance exer-cise.The study will investigate the physical

and mental factors which determine the en-durance performance and pacing strategiesin a 70km time trial; the inter-individual dif-ferences between “elite” and “sub-elite” cy-clists, and the intra-individual differencesbetween an individual time trial and a head-on-head competition. The study involves laboratory visits to de-

termine peak oxygen consumption, peakpower output and maximum heart rate, aswell as other anthropometric measure-ments.Research participants will be required to

perform a 70km familiarisation and threeself-paced, maximal 70km time-trials ontheir own bicycles on a virtual, profiledcourse, including a head-on-head competi-tion against other matched cyclists.Research subjects shouldbemale sub-elite
