In loving memory of all those

plaque on the memorial at the

historical Eikendal graveyard,

which will set a future trend

when it opens for above-ground

burials.

When completed next year, this

R11 million project will be the first

cemetery in the City of Cape Town

to be re-used with above-ground

crypts and marks the first occasion

where all the stakeholders agreed

to the reuse of an historic cemetery

in the city.

According to Susan Brice, ceme-

tery co-ordinator at the city, burials

took place on the site in the late 19th

century and again for the last time

in the 1950s. Itwasused by the origi-

nal community ofKraaifonteinwho

had helped build the railway line

from Cape Town to Stellenbosch.

Brice presented the citys devel-

opment plan on the graveyard at a

subcouncil meeting last week.

Eikendal was a private grave-

yard associated with the Methodist

Church but fell into disuse when

the Kraaifontein municipal ceme-

tery was opened in 1960, she said.

The current project was initiated

in 2007 when Subcouncil 2 chair-

man Grant Twigg requested this

open space in Eikendal to be devel-

oped.

At the time the community in-

formed him of the likelihood of old

graves in the area, whereupon the

citys heritage department commis-

sioned an archaeological survey.

The survey together with verbal

testimony and public consultations

confirmed this fact, and on 18 Sep-

tember 2008 the South African Her-

itage Resources Agency (Sahra) is-

sued a permit. In August 2010 the

memorial was unveiled.

It was not possible to identify all

the graves on the site, as no records

were available and the city did not

exhume the bodies. Thus thememo-

rial will commemorate everyone

ever buried there. The above-

ground crypts to be used in future

will also ensure that the older

graves are not desecrated by any

digging, she said.

The above-ground burial method referred

to is not yet fully developed in Cape Town,

but a pilot project is under way at Rusthof

cemetery in Strand, according to Brice.

The advantages of this burial method

when fully developed however are multiple.

Dormant cemeteries are expensive to

maintain, whereas reuse of old cemeteries

provides a renewed income stream.

No environmental zoning is necessary

and above-ground modular crypts are ready

to use and requires no digging prepara-

tions, she said.

Disadvantages and risks include limited

space that can only provide about 3 000 po-

tential modular graves at very high cost.

Furthermore the site will also provide in-

novative options for burial and scattering of

ashes, at memorial trees, walls and nice

pavers in the pathways, she said.

Although the city proposes to proceedwith

the projects in three phases as funds become

available, ward councillor Marian Nieu-

woudt insisted that the city finds the funds

to initiate this project as a matter of impor-

tance.

ningsvoertuig, het die laaste skof op

fietse van Spitskoppe na Henties-

baai begin.

Die grondpad was mooi, maar

Klein Nina Jacobs van Sonkring was

skaars n jaar oud toe sy onlangs in die

Rooi Kruis-kinderhospitaal aan lewer-

versaking oorlede is. As n geskikte sken-

ker betyds gekry is, sou die tragedie nie

gebeur het nie.

Die pragtige babadogtertjie was een van

vele kinders wat in die hospitaal se nier- en

lewereenheid dringend op n or-

gaanoorplanting gewag het.

Dit was te laat vir Nina, maar

vandag wil haar ouers die pu-

bliek bewus maak van die kri-

tieke tekort aan orgaansken-

kers.

al die kindertjies in die hospi-

taal gesien hetwatwag op n nu-

we lewe.

n Mens besef nie hoe groot

die tekort aan orgaanskenkers

is nie, en hoeveel lewens een

persoon kan red nie, s haar

pa, Johan, wat intussen saam

met haar ma, Noli, en hul hele

gesin as orgaanskenkers geregi-

streer het.

Volgens Johan is daar sowat

20 kinderswat tans in di hospi-

taal se lewer- en nierafdeling

wag vir organe, maar het daar vanjaar nog

net twee leweroorplantings plaasgevind.

Die Jacobse se sonnige voorkamer staan

nog vol ruikers van geliefdes uit meegevoel.

Prettige gesinsfotos pryk teen al die mure

n sprankelende jong gesin opdie kruinvan

hul lewens.

Nina is op 27 April verlede jaar geboremet

neonatale hepatitis of geelsug soos dit alge-

meen bekend staan.

Daar is geen geskiedenis van lewersiekte

in ons families nie en die dokters was nie se-

ker presies hoekom sy dit opgedoen het nie.

Volgens hulle word 80% van babatjies met

geelsug heeltemal gesond. Maar Nina was

een van die min wat net nie wou beter word

nie, vertel Johan hartseer.

Nina was van geboorte af in en uit die hos-

pitaal en op 12 weke het n lewerbiopsie ge-

toon haar lewerfunksie was aangetas.

Sy was altyd op medikasie en moes ge-

reeld bloedoortappings ondergaan, s Jo-

han.

nLeweroorplantingwas onvermydelik en

driemaande gelede isNina permanent in die

Rooi Kruis-kinderhospitaal opgeneem, waar

sy sou wag vir n leweroorplanting.

Voordat sy opdie oorplantingslys geplaas

is, moes sy eers talle toetse ondergaan om te

bepaal of sy n geskikte kandidaat is vir so

n oorplanting.

Haar liggaammoes sterk genoegwees om

die operasie te ondergaan en ons as ouers

moes onderneem om spesiale nasorg aan

haar te bied, s hy.

In Mei is Nina bo-aan die aktiewe lys ge-

plaas.

Haar toestand was kritiek en haar ouers

het vir drie maande desperaat op n lewer-

skenking gewag.

Nina wat 10 kg geweeg het, kon n lewer

van enige skenker onder 100 kg ontvang, wat

dan kleiner gesny kon word vir oorplanting

in haar klein lyfie solank die bloedgroep

ooreengekom het.

Ons het nooit hoop verloor nie

en elke dag tot die einde toe gehoop

dat daar van iewers n geskikte le-

wer sou kom, s Noli.

Sowat drie weke terug het Nina

egter n swaminfeksie in haar lewer

ontwikkel, wat uiteindelik haar le-

we op 16 Augustus geis het.

Volgens die Stigting van Orgaan-

skenkers kan een oorgaanskenker

sewe lewens red.

Dit sluit in n hart, twee longe,

twee niere, n lewer en n pankreas.

Volgens Samantha Volschenk

vandie stigting is daar tans 4 300 pa-

sinte landswyd wat wag vir orga-

ne, terwyl daar net sowat 600 oor-

plantings per jaar gedoen kanword.

In dieWes-Kaapwag 280 pasinte

tans dringend op organe.

Sonder die skenkings sal die pa-

sinte omkom, s Volschenk.

Augustus is orgaanskenkingsmaand.

Watch rounded up a group of young boys ar-

med with screwdrivers last Friday night.

At aboutmidnight the patrol spotted about

eight boyswalkingdownCentralDrive, from

the direction of Scottsdene.

We stopped them and upon searching

them found four screwdrivers, one knife,

scissors and three bottles of petrol, said

spokesperson Craig Wakefield.

According to Wakefield the boys were un-

der 12 and one of them was as young as 10

years old.

Theywere all high fromsniffing petrol fu-

mes and we called the sector commander to

fetch them, he said.

The sector commander after questioning

the boys loaded them into the truck and took

them to the Kraaifontein police station whe-

re social services were contacted.

dwonge by Cape Gate stilhou.

Hier het die man uitgespring en wegge-

hardloop, maar die polisie, wat intussen op-

gedaag het, kon drie van die vier mans aan-

keer.

Die polisie gee erkenning aan diewag vir

sy goeie werk. Hy het geweet wat hy doen,

was n goeie skut en het homself in gevaar

geplaas om die diefstal af te weer, s Nie-

mand, maar voeg by dat nie net enige per-

soon s moet optree nie. Jy moet gekwalifi-

seerd wees en weet wat jy doen, s hy.

Volgens Niemand is dit hoogs waarskyn-

lik dat die inhegtenisneming polisie kan lei

na die sindikaat wat verantwoordelik is vir

die diefstal van veral Izuzu-bakkies in die

Kraaifontein-omgewing.

Kraaifontein youths walked away with two

coveted awards in the recently concluded

2012 Artscape High School Drama Festival.

The competition was celebrated in grand

style where winners were announced at an

awards ceremonyheld at theArtscape Thea-

tre on 18 August.

Abuse is still our enemy by Masibambane

Secondary School in Kraaifontein was

crowned as the best production, while Ni-

cholate Ngongoshe from the same school

took the award for best actress.

This years competition themewas Living

Values.

The 16 finalist schools, selected from69 en-

tries across the Western Cape were trans-

ported to Artscape where they spent four ac-

tion-packed days, presenting their extraor-

dinary drama projects to a panel of

adjudicators including Mzwakhe Sticks

Mdidimba, Francois Toerien and Peter But-

ler from 13 to 16 August.

Every single participant deserves an

awardbecause the standardofworkwaspro-

fessional, of high quality and the high level

of discipline and enthusiasm shown was

deeply moving, said Peter Butler, televi-

sion actor and an adjudicator of the competi-

tion.

Generously supported by the GrandWest

Cape Culture and Heritage Foundation, the

2012HighSchoolDramaFestivalwas initiat-

ed and co-ordinated by Artscapes educa-

tional youth development programme that

aims to promote social cohesion, good citi-

zenship and empowerment through the arts.

to assist the elderly is soon

launching in the northern

suburbs of Cape Town.

The Guardian Angels orig-

inated in Nelspruit during

2010, and has since opened 16

branches countrywide.

Volunteers spend time

weekly with the elderly, just

talking or perhaps taking a

trip to town if that iswhat the

need is.

A compulsory monthly

meeting is required as an

NPO, to plan fundraising

events and ideas to spoil the

elderly.

This is a very rewarding

programme and everyone of

all ages, male and female,

working or non-working are

invited to join us and spread

the joy of what we do,says

founder and national co-or-

Three Siamese cats have mysteriously

disappeared in the area over a fortnight

and concerned cat owners dont put this

down to coincidence.

On 4 August Joanie Swarts eight-month-

old Siamese cat went missing in De Wet Ma-

rais Park in Kraaifontein. He had a green

collar with his details on and despite a

missing advertisement placed in the pa-

per, he has not yet been found.

Last week Swart discovered that another

resident from Drostdy Street in Kraaifon-

tein also advertised hermissing Siamese cat

in the paper.

Her cat went missing on the same day as

mine. Both these cats were last seen on the

morning of 4 August and I doubt very much

that this is a coincidence. Both these cats

were healthy and well taken care of, she

told TygerBurger.

Last week she was also contacted by a

woman in Durbanville, whose 11-month-old

Siamese went missing three days after the

first two incidents. He too was micro-

chipped, verywell takencare of butnot steri-

lised yet.

Something is really wrong in the Kraai-

fontein/Durbanville area and Iwant towarn

owners of Siamese cats to be very alert, she

said.

The woman in Durbanville has in the

meanwhile contacted all the vets in the area,

left posters at the local shops, and advertised

on Gumtree, without any success.

Im completely devastated and it is so dif-

ficult not knowingwhat has happened tomy

cat and where he is. My two Siamese are my

children and I love them both very much. I

also feel for his little brother as he clearly

misses him and calls his brother all the

time, this woman said.

She urges anyone who knows where these

Its an impossible situation. On the one

hand theres the pretty damning picture

about rising fuel prices and subsequent

higher food prices and all the other nega-

tives, like retrenchments, that come with

it.

On the other, we have our not-so-youth-

ful ANC youth league, that simply de-

mands land, electricity, houses, andHelen

Zilles resignation and they want it now.

At Mondays protest in Cape Town,

some of the youths got it all wrong with

placards about the war in Palestine...

The youth league has been threatening

Patricia de Lille for a while now to make

the city ungovernable. In their attempts

thus far, property has been damaged, peo-

ple have been seriously injured, even

killed. De Lille said she wouldnt tolerate

it, and stood her ground thus far.

Obviously this is not good for our econo-

my. Investors hold on to theirmoney, sala-

ry increases are decreasing, while living

costs as well as tax pressure to support

the growing number of the unemployed

are forever on the up.

We as citizens of a beautiful country and

great city are on our own. We have to fend

for ourselves, as promises from the senior

ranks are vastly different from action.

Paralympic

criteria

The Paralympics has, since the world-

beating times of Oscar Pistorius, claimed

the attention of thousands who have not

previously been interested.

I have been unable to acquire any infor-

mation regarding the criteria by which

the participants are judged.

No one has been able to answer the

many questions which arise from the par-

ticipation of the physically disadvan-

taged. Perhaps there is a reader, or for

that matter, your reporting staff, who can

supply the answers to themany questions

now being raised.

Does a person have to be physically

handicapped to participate?

Does a person with an arm missing (or

both) have to compete against persons

who have a leg, or both amputated? Do

swimmers with one arm compete against

those with one leg?

Do the mentally retarded also qualify

for the Paralympics? There are so many

questions.

The International Paralympic Commit-

tee (IPC) has established six disability cate-

gories. Within the six disability categories,

athletes are divided according to their level

of impairment, in a functional classifica-

tion system which differs from sport to

sport.

Amputee:Athleteswith apartial or total

loss of at least one limb.

Cerebral Palsy: Athletes with non-pro-

gressive brain damage, for example cere-

bral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke

or similar disabilities affectingmuscle con-

trol, balance or co-ordination.

Intellectual Disability:Athletes with a

significant impairment in intellectual

functioning and associated limitations in

adaptive behaviour.

Wheelchair: Athletes with spinal cord

injuries and other disabilities that require

them to compete in a wheelchair.

Visually Impaired: Athletes with visu-

al impairment ranging from partial vi-

sion, sufficient to be judged legally blind,

to total blindness.

Les Autres:Athletes with a physical dis-

ability that does not fall strictly under one

of the other five categories, such as dwarf-

ism, multiple sclerosis or congenital de-

formities of the limbs.

Athletes with different disabilities do

compete against each other once they quali-

die nuwe Meridian-skool wat hier in die

hartjie van Uitzicht en Pinehurst oopmaak.

Toe ek skakel om my kinders daar in te

skryf, het die dame my dadelik in kennis ge-

stel dit gaan net n Engelse skool wees.

Ek vra toe hoekom hulle in n hoofsaaklik

Afrikaanse woonbuurt nie voorsiening

maak vir Afrikaans nie.

Sy s toe dit is n gemeenskapskool en hul-

le wil nie noodwendig Afrikaners lok nie,

maar eerder mense van ander gemeenskap-

pe.

Nou wil ek weet, wat beteken dit? Wat pre-

sies bedoel sy met ander gemeenskappe?

Is die Afrikaner nie meer goed genoeg nie,

en as hulle dan so graag ander gemeen-

skappe wil lok, hoekom gaan bou hulle nie

danmaar die skool in die ander gemeenskap

nie?

Uitzicht kort dringend n Afrikaanse

skool. Durbanville wil ons nie h nie, Gene

Louw ook nie meer nie.

Kraaifontein is die enigste opsie, maar dis

uitmy pad. Sy stel toe voor dat Curro in Dur-

banville dan die Afrikaanse kinders kan

help, maar beslis nie Meridian nie.

Komaan,Meridian, spel dit vir ons uit pre-

sies hoekom julle nie Afrikaans in jul skool

wil h nie?

Watter gemeenskappe is dit dan wat julle

eerder as ons Afrikaanse gemeenskap wil

dien?

Uitzicht

Dr. Chris van der Merwe, hoof-uitvoe-

rende beampte van Curro Holdings: Deur

die Meridian-private skool-model poog Curro

Holdings omaangemeenskappe n baie bekos-

tigbare private skoolmodel aan te bied. Een

van die maniere om dit reg te kry is om die

onderrigtaal tot een (indieMeridian-geval net

Engels) te beperk. n Parallel-medium private

skoolmodel is duurder as n enkelmedium pri-

vate skoolmodel. Die fooie van ons parallel-

medium private skole, soos Curro Durbanvil-

le, is meer as die Private Skool Meridian,

maar akkommodeer Afrikaans- n Engelse

leerders. Die Afrikaanse mark is nie groot ge-

noeg om n bykomende Afrikaanse private

skool in die omgewing op te rig nie, veral met

Curro Durbanville wat reeds die Afrikaanse

mark in die omgewingbedien. In die breDur-

banville-omgewing is daar oorgenoeg goeie

skole wat die Afrikaanssprekende gemeen-

skap bedien.

Kegels oplossing vir probleem

Hierdie brief is na aanleidingvandie skrywe

deur Hans (Die plekke nog beset, Tyger-

Burger 22 Augustus).

Ons het dieselfde probleem gehad van

mense wat in die gestremde parkeersone

hier in Brighton Square, Kraaifontein, on-

wettig parkeer.

Ek het die probleem onder die aandag van

Spar (die ankerhuurder), sowel as die seker-

heidspersoneel gebring en het slegs n skou-

er-ophaal-reaksie gekry.

Dit het genoodsaak dat ek by Spar se hoof-

kantoormoes aanklop. Spar-hoofkantoorhet

my verseker hulle sal die probleem oplos.

Dieselfde dag het een van Spar Brighton

Square se bestuurders my geskakel om my

te verseker hulle werk aan die probleem

langer as n jaar al! Ek het aan die persoon

voorgestel omrooi kegels voor die gestremde

parkeerplekke te gebruik tot tyd enwyl hulle

die probleem uitstryk. Een uur later het

hulle massiewe rooi kegels voor die ge-

stremde parkeerplekke gehad!

Dit is net jammer dat ons mense so ge-

voelloos is om op hierdie parkeerplekke

sonder skaamte stil te hou.

comunity on 31 August.

DESIRE RORKE

Bergdal Subcouncil again tops the citys

list with the highest percentage spent on

ward allocations for the current finan-

cial year.

Thevariouswards in this subcouncilman-

aged to spent 99,6 % of monies allocated to

its wards during the 2011/12 financial year.

According to chairman Grant Twigg, this

is an excellent achievement, which once

again proves the hard work of the council-

lors and officials at this subcouncil.

Without the proper monitoring of the

ward councillors, this wont be possible. It

has happened in the past and is still happen-

ing at other subcouncils in the city, where

projects are started but officials are left to

carry on without proper monitoring, which

leads to projects not being finalised, he said.

Councillors must make sure that all the

funds allocated by the city as identified by

themselves are spent. Monies not spent are

lost as it is not carried over, he said.

Annual ward allocations were used for

both capital and operational costs. A total of

R1,1 million was spent on capital projects in

four wards and R1,9 million on operational

budgets in the same wards.
