De Jager, his girlfriend and the girlfriend’sdaughter – Mare’s friend, came in for questi-oning on Wednesday 16 January, five daysafter her assumed disappearance. Mare waslodging with them at the time of her murder.

“The daughter immediately confirmedthat Charmaine wore that particular tonguering, and upon further questioning De Jagerstarted to act suspiciously. He shifted in hischair and he appeared to be panicking. Hewas the last person to be with Mare, but yethe could not give satisfactory answers toquestions posed to him. He was very vagueand his body language gave him away,” saidSampson

“I knew something was wrong and that hewas not telling the truth”.

He immediately arrested De Jager andkept him in custody at the Kraaifonteincells, where he for the next 48 hours madeuse of his interrogation skills, along with 27years’ experience as a police officer to gainenough evidence against De Jager, beforethe legal time frame ran out.

Cracked“For the next week I did not sleep much.

I came in at 04:00 in the morning every dayto persist in questioning De Jager,” he says.

It paid off. De Jager finally cracked and ad-mitted to cutting up and hiding Charmaine’sbody. He still denied murdering her, butpointed police to where he hid the rest of herremains.

According to De Jager, Mare’s death wasan accident. She fell and bumped her headon the side of the bathtub.

At this stage De Jager still had a chanceto get off with culpable homicide. Or so hethought.

After the body was found and DNA confir-med the identity of the girl, Sampson had todrive to Kriel in Mpumalanga to interviewthe dead girl’s bereaved parents, a part of thejob that remains harrowing after more thantwo decades in the service.

“It is always difficult to talk to the family

of the deceased. But I’ve had to do it hun-dreds of times in my career, and as a police-man you learn to steel yourself against thisgrief,” he says.

Sampson had the body, the identity, a sus-pect, but he still lacked motive.

From this point onwards everything hadto be done precisely according to the book. The paperwork had to be spotless, leavingnothing to chance so a clever defence lawercould find a loophole. Hours were spent me-ticulously working on the docket.

“For every search we did we made sure allthe correct warrants were in place,” he said.

“When we searched the house, we foundthe carpet taken out of the boot of his car anda strong smell of bleach, indicating that thesuspect attempted to disguise traces ofblood,” says Sampson.

A failed attempt, as it turned out, as tracesof Mare’s blood were found in the car any-way.

Her cellphone was also retrieved from apocket in one of his jackets, on which policefound incriminating SMS messages the vic-tim sent to her mother, as well as taped con-versations with the accused.

During these conversations it emergedthat De Jager pressured Mare for sex. In herSMSes she referred to this and the fact thatshe feared him.

Sampson’s thorough investigation madefor a watertight case in court.

Hard work“De Jager could never explain why he hid

her body or why the victim had no cracksin her skull from the alleged fall against thebathtub,” said Sampson, who made sure eve-ry witness showed up on time at the courton the day.

“I drove witnesses to and from court, drop-ped files and photos at the courthouse, dideverything I could to ensure a conviction,”he said.

Although the autopsy could never revealthe cause of death due to the fact that the tor-so was so badly burnt, the overwhelmingevidence against De Jager led to his beingconvicted of her murder. It was deduced byinvestigators that Mare was in all probabili-ty raped and then strangled.

“After the conviction and sentencing sco-res of people were relieved and I can trulysay I did my job as a policeman,” says Samps-on, who firmly believes that South Africandetectives are top class, despite all the nega-tive press.

“The public does not always know the rea-lity of police work in South Africa. Theywatch television and see the TV cops wor-king tirelessly on only one case, usually sol-ved in a day or two. I have more than 100cases on my desk at present,” he says.

“The public is often negative towards thepolice and only see the bad, without reali-sing the mammoth challenges we face, ra-ther than being thankfull for what we do.”

De Jager, who was found guilty on all char-ges, will be an old man when he sees the outs-ide again.

“I hope Charmaine will rest in peace now, that will make all the difference to me,”Sampson said.

Erica Crouse, poli-siewoordvoerder.

@dezzierorke

infrastruktuur.Die huidige begroting sal spesifiek fokus

op die beplanningsfase van die Bottelary-pad/R300-kruising.Phillip van Zijl, voorsitter van die Oos-

tenberg-sakekamer,wat geaffilieer is by dieAHI, was in sy skik met die goeie opkoms

by die dinee.

lasting vir 2014/15 is vanjaar 6 % invergely-kingmet verlede jaar se 6,10 %; elektrisiteit7,63 % teenoor verlede jaar se 7,86 % en wa-ter 8 %, in vergelyking met verlede jaar se9,5 3%.V Marian Nieuwoudt nooi lede van die publiek omhul insae oor die volgende begroting van 2015/2016te bring. se and doctors could never really determinewhat was causing the deterioration of hermotor skills or provide a diagnosis.“We were desperate for answers. After

going from doctor to doctor we finally foundour way to the consulting rooms of Dr Gilli-an Riordan at the Red Cross War MemorialChildren’s Hospital. With the help of Dr Ri-ordan, we finally found the cause of Mien-

ka’s condition. She was diagnosed with in-fantilemitochondrial hepatopathy, which isa cardinal feature of MEGDEL syndrome.”This is a disease so rare that it only affects

about one in a million children.

Experimental drug“With the help of our caring doctors we

found out about an experimental drug thatwas introduced in the United States of Ame-rica. They were still in the preliminary teststage for this drug, but the possibility wasthere that Mienka could qualify to be partof their experimental testing,” says Elzaan. In the meantime Mienka received a fee-

ding tube because she was unable to take inenough nutrients to build up her deteriora-ting body.To this day she still receivesher daily inta-

ke through her feeding tube.Mienka received the experimental drug

EPI 743, but unfortunately the devastatingdestructiveness of the disease outweighs theresult of the medicine andMienka’s conditi-on continues to get worse with each day thatpasses.“Mienka is now completely paralysed.

She’s not even able to lift her little head onher own. The last time that we went to thehospital with her, the doctors talked aboutputtingprocedures inplace should the inevi-table happen. Theywanted to knowwhetherthey should resuscitate her when the timecomes or not.”Living with the continual uncertainty ta-

kes its toll on the family, but it has alsomadethem hyper aware of how precious each mo-ment is.“No one knows what the future may hold.

We literally seize theday, everyday, becauseall you have is the present. The here andnow.Andwe try tomake the best of each daythat we can. As a family, together.”

An old warning about a wave of “Dranobomb” attacks has been spreading onceagain on social media.Thiswarning, attributed to theSouthAfri-

can Police Service, is nonsense, says TableView station commander, Colonel Dirk Vos-loo.“It’s the first time I’veheardabout it,” said

Vosloo when TygerBurger asked him aboutthe warning. The informationmakingpeople anxious is

that criminals put Drano (Jeyes Fluid inSouth Africa), tin foil and a little water ina plastic cooldrink bottle and screw the capback on. They then leave it visible on yourproperty so that you’ll pick it up to throw

away. But the warning is that if the mixtureis agitated by being picked up, it will buildup enough gas within 30 seconds to explodewith enough force to remove a hand or arm.Vosloo says these warnings would be cir-

culated within the police network before be-ing made public, and he is completely una-ware of any such activity.According to the website Hoax Slayer, the

messagehas apparently been circulating theglobe since 2010, slightly adjusted to spreadfear in local communities.“In many cases the bombs explode or are

disposed of without causing injury. Often, the homemade bombs do not go off at all,”states the site. The website nonethess advises care when

picking up suspicious looking plastic orglass bottles.

Principals, deputy principals and headsof department from across the Penin-sula congregated in Kuils River this

past weekend to attend a Quality Manage-ment Conference.Organised by the Woolworths Making the

Difference Educational program, MySchooland theWestern Cape Department of Educa-tion, the eventwasheld at theCapeTeachingand Leadership Institute in Kuils River. The aim of the seminar was to provide

principals and heads of department with ad-ditional leadership skills to manage theirschools more successfully.Guest speaker and former principal at

Grey’s Academy in the Free State, JohanVolsteedt, told principals on Saturday mor-ning that if they want to influence peoplethey need to bring their hearts to school. He told principals, slowly but surely if

they keep grinding away they can achievesuccess.“It is essential that we improve all the ti-

me,” he said.“We have to try to achieve something bet-

ter in ourselves. Your knowledge, your pas-sion and compassion, the students should beable to bring that into their own lives,” hecontinued. He said upholding good values was very

important.Volsteedt said principals should always

encourage learners to be products of theirchoices and not of their circumstances.“All children have hearts, they have good-

ness in them but often they have circum-stances that are thrust upon them.”Newly appointed Western Cape MEC of

Education, Debbie Schafer, who addressedthe crowd earlier during the morning, said

her department’s ultimate objective for thenext five years is to deepen and strengthenquality education for all.“Critical to this vision is leadership wit-

hin our schools, leadership that consists ofa strong principal, an equally strong deputyprincipal, a supportive and constructiveschool governing body and a passionate andcommitted heads of department team.“Each of you here today are absolutely es-

sential in providing a quality education toour learners,” Schafer said. She said principals are first and foremost

responsible for the efficient management oftheir departments.“In other words, how well your depart-

ment runs is largely the result of the decisi-ons that you and your management team ta-ke.“You are also essential to providing direc-

tion and educational vision both within yo-ur school and community.“You have the professional responsibility

to standupandconstructivelyquestiondeci-sions which affect your department and theinterests of the learners at your schools,”She said it is therefore critical that they

ensure all heads of department have theskills and knowledge to lead their depart-ments effectively, offering support to theirprincipals and management teams.“That is why the department has over the

last few years initiated training workshopsthat target the roles and responsibilities ofheads of departments through numerousprograms at this very venue, as well as cour-ses for aspiring principals and school lea-ders,” Schafer said.Others in attendance on Saturday inclu-

ded Head of Education Penny Vinjevold,Woolworths management staff, and adven-turer and motivational speaker BraamMal-herbe.

Guest speaker and former principal at Grey’sAcademy in the Free State, Johan Volsteedt, motivates principals to be more involved andpassionate about their schools, learners andeducation at a conference held this pastweekend.

Several principals, deupty principals and Heads of Departments, attended a Quality ManagementConference this weekend in Kuils River. The newly appointed Western Cape MEC of Education,Debbie Schafer, addressed them during the morning.

Werkswinkel“My droom is om my eie werkswinkel in

As dingeanders was, was ons by die huis.”

Criminal minds – the realityASTRID FEBRUARIE

@febastrid

Most crime, such as home invasionsand hijackings, are motivated bygreed. Few criminals steal to put food

on the table.Christopher Plum, a 34-year-old former

prisoner who did a stint in prison for armedrobbery, gave insight into the criminalmind.

The talk at Oude Moulen Technical Highschool on Thursday 29 May was attended byresidents, police and the neighbourhoodwatch.

Plum, who served 12 years of his 25-yearsentence for armed robbery, spoke freelyabout his life before his sentencing.

“I believe I am a rehabilitated prisoner. While I was in prison I had time to reflecton the things I did and how I hurt the victimsof the robberies I committed,” he said.

“I felt I needed to change. No one shouldbe treated the way I treated people.”

Plum joined the Prison Care and SupportNetwork while in prison. The programme isaimed at empowering inmates and encour-aging their reform. He says many of the peo-ple whom he knew were involved in houserobberies and other crimes, were motivatedsolely by greed.

“They want things that other peoplehave,” he says. “They blame the system, they blame apartheid, but they never blamethemselves.”

An underlying anger builds up withinthem and they try to convince themselves ifthey commit a crime they would makethings even, he says.

“Even though they know they are stealingmaterial things which can be replaced, thesatisfaction of the crime lasts only a shortwhile.”

Plum was released on Thursday 22 Octo-

ber 2009, a pivotal momentfor him as he felt renewedand wanted to transform in-to a better person.

However, he says, his fam-ily still believed he was thesame.

“It was difficult for myfamily to accept me, but aftera while they realised I hadchanged. I was a differentman. I was no longer the un-cle who would take his gun, walk two or three housesdown the road, rob the peo-ple and use the money to buyfood for my family. I hadchanged,” he says.

House robberyPlum explained the process he followed

before committing a house robbery.First he and the thieves he worked with

would find a house suitable to break into. They would steal the mail, scrutinise it for

any details, and then look up the homeown-er’s name in the telephone directory.

They would then call the number to checkif anyone was at home.

After this they would go to the address andkeep it under surveillance, checking howmany people live there, what time they leavefor work and return, and if there is a domes-tic worker or gardener.

After a week, they would know exactlywhat the residents’ routines were.

Then they would meet and devise a planof action.

“After we have decided on the time andday we would go to the house, one of uswould jump over the wall and wait in the gar-den – in a place where it is dark, where noone will see us,” he says.

Plum said the real “trouble” starts when

residents return, pulling into their driveway and get-ting out the car.

They would then strike.“Do not try to be strong or

in control when this hap-pens. Remember the robberis just as scared and nervousas you are. They do not wantto go to prison or be killed,”Plum says.

The victim is threatened, taken inside and bound.

What follows is the sys-tematic ransacking of thehouse and taking any valua-bles they find.

Business robberyPlum said they would always get an insid-

er to assist with information needed to pulloff the robbery. At business robberies theywould charm the secretary or receptionistand so obtain information. At home robber-ies, they would target domestic workers orgardeners.

The gang would rent a “nice” car – at a rateof R150 a day – from a car rental agency. They would then drive to the airport, finda car with matching colour and model, andcopy that vehicle’s number plate and serialnumber.

“We had a guy who would cut a newnumber plate for us and we would removethe number plate from the hired car and re-place it with the new one,” he says.

One of them would then dress smartly andshow up at a business they are targeting inthe hired car.

Once inside they would usually target awoman working at the business.

“We would take her out and get to knowher and after a while the questioning wouldbegin,” he says.

The woman would be asked where the“boss” kept the safe and where the panic but-ton is, Plum says.

“We would then follow the boss to andfrom work and once we get to the workpremises we would rob them.

“Usually we would not rob a place with apanic button, because it is silent and onecannot hear it. If there is one we would abortthe robbery,” he said.

Plum’s advice to business owners is to en-sure their staff walk around with cordlesspanic buttons, as the robbers are familiarwith the usual spot a panic button is placed.

“We would know if someone attempts topress the panic button when they keep theirhands below the desk. Do not put your lifeat risk. Keep calm and always do as the rob-ber says. This way no one will get hurt,” hesaid.

Plum said he discovered that throughPrison Care and Support Network’s work-shops and talking and dissecting the circum-stances of his crime, he realised and accept-ed he had no valid reason to be a criminal.

“Blaming my circumstances on the past isfalse motivation, because we know what weare doing is wrong, especially when we arein the act of committing the crime. We knowdeep down what we are doing could get uskilled, sentenced to prison or result in thedeath of an innocent person. But we do it be-cause we think we will be better off.”

Plum’s honesty won his audience over thegeneral attitude from residents was that ofappreciation.

Many questioned how they could safe-guard themselves and their property. He al-so told them to change their routine as crimi-nals are quick to track their every move anduse this to their advantage, to ensure theyreport suspicious behaviour to police and tomake use of their security systems at alltimes.

“They want thingsthat other people

have,” he says.“They blame the

system, they blameapartheid, but they

never blamethemselves.”

I read article about the breadcontaining ADA(“Outrage sees shops ditching

‘rubber bread’”, TygerBurger, 21May) and Colin’s letter aboutstaying without bread (“‘Bread-less’ the only way left to go”,TygerBurger, 28 May).I just want to note that most

food on shelves nowadays aretoxic. There are additives in cheese

and vinegar, tins and picklesare filled with additives andpreservatives, meats are full ofpreservatives and chemicals tomake it look nicer, fruit andvegetables are sprayed withpreservatives and pastas arealso toxic. Then there is also genetically

modified foods.Consumers need to read the

labels and decide if they reallywant to put that into theirbodies. It leads to allergies, cancers, and much more. Why are doctors not question-

ing this and doing somethingabout it? Who is going to hold aworld summit for this?

My seun koop twee tennisballevoor skool by ’n Chinesewinkel.

Gaan dieselfdewinterstoriehom herhaal?

A local charity will be the beneficiarywhen an award winning musicianand marathon swimmer takes her

project to the shores of Europe.Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT), is a

South African organisation founded in Ca-pe Townwhich supports children with can-cer, and their families.Carina Bruwer, lead player of SAMA

Award-winning instrumental pop groupSterling EQ, and record holding marathonswimmer, will take her SwimForHope pro-ject to Europe this month, undertaking twobig Italian openwater swimming crossings.“Carina will be attempting a rare cros-

sing of the Strait of Bonifacio (15 km) bet-ween Corsica (France) and Sardinia (Italy)on 15 June, which has only been officiallyachieved once before by a trio of Britishswimmers. Thereafter, on 20 June she willattempt anunprecedented 14 kmquadruplecrossing of the Messina Straits between Si-cily and Calabria which, if successful, willmake her the first woman to cross this un-predictable stretch of ocean more than twi-ce,” says Little Fighters Cancer Trust sproj-cet manager Mandie Erasmus. For this swim she will be joined by Irish

marathon swimming legend Ned Denison, who is – like Carina – one of just five swim-mers ever to have conquered the notorious36 km False Bay crossing, widely regardedas one of themost difficultmarathon swimsin the southern hemisphere.

Household nameCarinawas ahouseholdname in openwa-

ter swimming circles across the world evenbefore she became prominent as a musici-an.She competed in seven countries between

2004 and 2006 winning numerous races, completing solo crossings such as the En-glish Channel, Gibraltar Straits and FalseBay, breaking nearly a dozen records (nati-onal and international), and enjoying signi-ficant national and international media co-verage. In 2007 she founded instrumentalpop group Sterling EQ which, under Cari-na’s guidance, became a headliner in theSouth Africanmusic industry, winning nu-merous awards and touring nationally andinternationally.

Swim for hopeAfter taking a break from open water

swimming due to a rigorous touring sche-dule, as well as having started a family in2008, Carina returned to the sport in 2013by launchingSwimForHope throughadra-matic and widely publicised solo roundingof Cape Point for LFCT which raisedR17 000.In March Swim For Hope returned as a

grouproundingofCapePoint, with 14 extre-me swimmers raisingoverR115 000 andgai-ningwidespread awareness of child cancer.Carina now plans to dedicate a large porti-on of her big solo swims to Little Fighters

CancerTrust by swimmingunder the SwimFor Hope banner, and inviting fellow extre-me swimmers to do so too.

Preventable“Childhood cancer has a desperate effect

on the whole family, like no other cancer,”says Carina.“There are many people – especially suf-

ferers themselves – rallying and doing ama-zing work for breast cancer and other chro-nic diseases, but children do not have thesame voice nor the ability to spread awa-reness, making it incredibly challengingfor childhood cancer fighters to get themes-sage across and raise much needed funds.“Having two perfectly healthy children

myself, I simply could not remain untou-ched by LFCT’s work and the cause, andmaking a small difference to themhasmadea big difference in my own life,” she says.“In South Africa, the limited resources

are shared betweenAids, adult cancers anddiseases such as Tuberculosis andMalaria, with child cancer being in dire need of awa-reness campaigns and support structures.I’m therefore hoping to create some inter-national awareness and support throughmy European swims.”“It amazes me every time that Carina

stepsup for our cause, at times bravingdan-gerous conditions, to promote childhoodcancer awareness, and raising funds for thework we do,” says Mandie.“Childhood Cancer is a silent killer in

South Africa. Less than a third of actualchildhood cancer cases in South Africa arediagnosed annually, mainly due to a lack ofawareness. In the developed world, whichincludes Europe and the US, the success ra-te of childhood cancer treatment is between80% and 90%. South Africa shares the suc-cess rate of the developing world, which isa mere 10% to 20%. This should not be, as70% of all childhood cancers are 100% cura-ble if diagnosed in time.”The Little Fighters Cancer Trust sup-

ports children diagnosed with cancer andtheir families by offering a wide variety ofindividualized assistance, including, butnot restricted to, provision of food and gro-ceries, transport, clothing, furnishings, bedding, medication, medical equipmentand 24 hour emotional support. Parents ofdiagnosed children often lose or leave theirjobs to be able to provide the special careand support required, which, together withthehuge emotional strain of havinga termi-nally sick child, often disables the family fi-nancially and emotionally. Little Fighterssteps in to help create a support system inorder for the children and their families tomaintain their dignity, andwith it, providehope.

V Public as well as corporate contributions are encouraged and can be made on www.justgiving.com/SwimForHope or contact Mandie on 073 729 6155or [email protected]

Daar is twee gr. R-klasse, twee gr. 1-klasse

dryf.

’nSeuntjie vandrie jaarkonniksdoennie.Hy was afwesig en oorangstig. Vandag is hyin ’n hoofstroom-laerskool met ’n fasiliteer-der. Aanstaande jaar gaan hy na ’n hoër-skool sonder enige fasiliteerder.“Ons volg die individuele onderwysplan

(IEP).

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

Internationally celebrated local singerand songwriter Louise Day is busy wor-king on new music for her fans.Louise describes her music as folk pop. “I

started out as a folk guitarist when I learnthow to play the guitar,” she explains. Her latest single, “Nothingville”, is a per-

fect example of this. The song has alreadybeenpickedupbySmileFM, 94.5KFM,MFM92.6 and Groot FM, and she recently perfor-med it live on SABC 3’s Expresso Show.Louise also has a new album on the way.

Although it doesn’t have a name yet, the al-bum will be released towards the end of theyear and Louise says it’s going to be more“singer/songwriter” than her last album,Swallowed by the City, which earned her aSAMA nomination for best pop album. She says the new album will be more chil-

led out, but still have something for everyo-ne. Louise is working with producer Den-holmHarding of Just Jinjer fame, who’s alsojust finished work on the new Prime Circlealbum.

International scene“He is really is a very talented guy, so I’m

very excited toworkwith him,” Louise says.Wanting to explore the International mu-

sic scene, Louise temporarilymoved toAme-rica where she regularly opened for interna-tional acts at premier live music venue Bel-lyup. The exposure led to her performing asa Fender musician at the Winter X Gamesand TempeMusic Festival in Arizonawhereshe performed on the same stage at The Frayand John Mayer.Fender USA also asked her to endorse

their range of guitars for women. After returning to South Africa, Louise

and her band released two albums beforestarting work on the third.“I learnt that good music goes down well

anywhere,” Louise says of her experience inthe US, adding “it’s really fun to just play todifferent audiences.”Louise also learnt there are fantastic mu-

sicians overseas and she is a small fish ina big pond, but more importantly, she foundthe variety ofmusic andmusicians she expe-rienced inspiring. When asked why she came back, Louise

smiles broadly and says: “There’s no placelike home.”

OpportunitiesShe says the local industry is prospering

and there are many opportunities for localmusicians, whichmakes her excited toworkhere. She cites the size of the American in-dustry as the biggest difference between he-re and there.“But at the end of the day it’s the same in

that great music wins,” she says.Louise says she is alwayswriting newma-

terial and developing her live performances.“Every show is a learning experience as

much as it is a fun experience.”Her focus this year is on creating and per-

forming the best possible songs. She’ll behibernating abet thiswinterwhi-

le she focuses on working on the album, andfans can expect lots of new songs come sum-mer.In the meantime, fans can see her tonight

at Mercury Live in the CBD with Joshua K.Grierson, Badyn Holesgrove, Blair Taberer,Dave Bryant, Nathan Woodman, CandiceBrewis, Werner Von Waltsleben, Leandiand Lelani VanDenBerg from 20:30 forWax-ing Lyrical. Tickets cost R40 at the door.V To stay up to date with Louise’s music and performances, visit www.louisedayband.com where youwill also find links to her social media profiles.V Louise performed “Nothingville” on the OrangeCouch. Kevin Schwartz, owner and producer ofthe Battle of the Titans showcase andPresident of IFBB Western Province,

has taken South African bodybuilding andbikini fitness to the next level.Following last year’s

successful launch, theshow to be held at theCPUTBellville campus onSaturday 21 June is thetalk of the town.Battle of the Titans II

prize money is in excessof R150 000 - somethingthat seemed only a dreamfor athletes a year or twoago. The overall Titan War-

rior will walk away witha whopping R10 000, La-dies and Men’s AthleticPhysiqueOveralls will re-ceive R5000, never mindthe additional prize mo-ney and gifts lined up.Adding to that, South Africa’s newest

IFBB PRO bodybuilder, Andrew Hudson, will make his first guest pose appearancesince turning professional.Local lad Xolile Damba was the overall

winner last year and crownedTitanWarrior2013. He will have his hands full retaininghis title. World Junior Champion Bodybuil-der Louis Bessinger from East London willdo battle as a senior at this event and chal-lenge the Ultimate Warrior 2014 crown. There are some big names expected to co-

me fight it out on stage for the spoils.“The response has been nothing short of

phenomenal. Everyone is talking and loo-

king forward to Battle of the Titans II. I real-ly do think this is the biggest and best showever to be held in Cape Town - in fact SouthAfrica. Altogether 100 VIP tickets were soldwithin days,” said Schwartz. Standard tic-kets are available at the door on the day.“If you look at the record turnout of athle-

tes we had a few monthsago at the SSN Cape Clas-sic, this is going to bemuch more entertainingwith special effects andlighting. I have added aopening surprise for allathletes and spectators,”says Schwartz.“We had 134 athletes

competing at the SSN Ca-pe Classic show, for Bat-tle of the Titans II wecould easily double thatnumber. The growth ofthe sport in the countrybut especially WesternProvince is incredible,”he said.

Due to the large number of athletes expec-ted to compete, the weigh-in, which usuallytakes place the morning of the competition, has been moved to the Friday evening.Weigh-in and registration on Friday after-

noon is from 17:00-20:00. The pre-judgingstarts onSaturdaymorning at 09:00,with themain show commencing at 19:00.The affiliation fee for athletes is R100 and

R150 for their division entry. Spectators feeis R100 for pre-judging andR150 for themainshow.Therewill be 30 line-ups in total, including

the overall line-ups. Go towww.ifbbwp.co.zaor facebook on IFBB Western Province forfull details on the various line-ups.

Rain may bring track thrillsTable View’s Brad Wadeley is one of the favourites in Saturday’s Makita Supercar races atKillarney.

Table View’s hard charging Brad Wade-ley is expected to be one of the stars inthe Makita Supercar events during thefourth round of the exciting WingfieldMotors Power Series at Killarney on Sa-turday.A former Supercar titleholder, Wade-

leywas on top formrecentlywhenhewonthe first race on a track thatwas still diffi-cult to navigate after earlier showers. His opposition on Saturday is going to

come fromveteranRichardSchreuder, aswell as current championship leaderNick Adcock, who has the advantage ofyears of international experience, oftenin poor weather conditions. While the inclementweathermay have

moved along the coast by the weekend, ifit hasn’t, thedriving is going toprovepar-ticularly interesting.Awet surface can be relied on to produ-

ce a spectacular contest thatwill bemuchappreciated by discerning spectators intheir boots and brollies. There are alwayssurprises and, while spectators might betreated, it is not every competitor’s cup

of tea. With talk of entries from 18-year-old

newcomer Jonathan Aberdien, whose fa-ther Chris was an Audi works driver inthe heady days of exhaust popping turbo-chargers, it will be interesting to see howthe youngster copes with the conditions. Then there’s Bellville’s charismatic

current national champion Kosie Wey-ers, who is somewhat surprisingly goingto be seen in a low key class C car in theJive GTi Challenge events. His presencealone will ensure this category becomeseven more of a headline attraction. While the big Masters V8’s will miss

joint Gold class leader Craig Jarvis whois campaigning in Europe, there could bea threat from Charles Arton who was infine form during the recent Jaguar Simo-la Knysna Hill Climb. However, with points awarded separa-

tely for performances in the Gold and Sil-ver classes, Franco Donadio leads the Sil-ver classification, with reigning champi-on Marcel Angel and Jarvis pegged levelin the premier Gold title chase.

Brakke, Kuile behaal puikoorwinnings

– (Nino Loubser)

POWERLIFTING: BONITA DEBUTS ON WORLD STAGE

Protea liftedby Parow local

Bonita Hein from Parow successfully hoists her 155kg deadlift during the IFP Classic Raw Powerlifting Championships held in Potchefstroom last week.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

The day finally arrived for Parowpower-lifter Bonita Hein to represent hercountry, and boy did she make a state-

ment.Bonita (43) achieved her full Protea co-

lours when she competed last week at theIFPClassicWorldRawPowerlifting champi-onships in Potchefstroom.Bonita was placed fourth overall in her

masters-1 u-84kg division.“First and foremost I would not have been

able to achieve this accomplishment wit-hout the grace of God. Despite falling ill withflu twoweeks prior to the competition, I wasfully committed to compete and set out toachieve what I worked so hard for, from theWesternProvince championships to the pro-vincials, qualifyingwith totals at each eventto be able to go to the ‘worlds’,” said a satis-fied Bonita.

She was successful with eight out of hernine lifts, only failing her 70kg bench pressattempt. She had green lights for her 110kg squat,

62,5kg bench press and 155kg deadlift, givingher a total of 327,5kg.“Missing my 70kg bench was very disap-

pointing. I couldhaveplaced evenbetter, butthat is part of the game. You are not alwaysgoing to make the totals you want. This justmakes me more determined to train evenharder.“In hindsight, it was a great learning expe-

rience sitting back stage withmany interna-tional athletes who have been competing foryears and have many rankings behind theirnames. The USA, Finland and Sweden werethe strongest countries.”After the success of her first ever appea-

rance on theworld stage, Bonita is now focu-sed on improving her current records at theupcoming inter-provincials in August.

was daar gemengde welslae. Aan die wen-kant was Goodwood (25-21 t Rangers), Brac-kenfell (26-12 t Macassar) en Milnerton (22-0t Hamlets). Maar minder suksesvol was

Kraaifontein (14-16 t Villager), Hands & He-art (13-22 t Pniël Villagers) en Scottsdene(7-34 t Collegians).Die komende naweek se bepalings (tuis-

span eerste) is: Belhar t Tygerberg, Primro-se t Durbanville-Bellville, SK/Walmer tNoordelikes/Northlink-kollege, Kuilsriviert Bellville, Milnerton t Pniël Villagers, Ma-cassar t Kraaifontein, Scottsdene t Bracken-fell, Villager t Hands & Heart.
