C omfort ye, comfort ye my people... – apoignant and famous line from Hand-el’s epic masterpiece, Messiah, is now

the title of an operatic musical born fromdusty Bloekombos streets.

Unforgettable childhood moments oftenshape the rest of our lives: personalities aremoulded by them and are hopefully whole-somely nostalgic.

But not for everyone, especially those whogrew up in impoverished Cape Town com-

munities.Mali Kwatsha (19), from Bloekombos was

only five when he learned he was abandonedon a dumpsite by his mother.

An alcoholic, Mali’s mother was lost to thethriving shebeen life in the township, wherea string of social ills are employed to copewith everyday reality. “Neither my fathernor I ever knew why she did it, but I believethat alcohol had killed her love for me,” Malisays in an interview with TygerBurger.

His anguished father, a constructionworker, found him later that night after re-turning home from work and raised his son

alone. His mother never returned.Mali is one of 24 teens of the Bloekombos

Secondary School choir who will be per-forming in this much anticipated musicaltheatre production which has been a yearand a half in the making. Mali’s story andthose of his peers outlines the autobiograph-ical texts and songs for Comfort Ye.

“I wanted them to create their own story,which started in a 10-day workshop duringDecember 2013. They penned their storiesand I collaborated it to write the text,” Ger-man stage director and librettist Robert Leh-meier explains. Lehmeier is associated to

Umculo Productions, an international mu-sic organisation that supports lasting socialchange through music in South Africa.

He describes the piece as heart-wrenchingand gripping, with a deeply spiritual under-current.

“It is stories of love and death in the midstof abject poverty, substance abuse and teen-age pregnancies and the titleComfortYebril-liantly encompasses the theme of the pro-duction. How to overcome and find hopewhen everything seems so desperate,” hesays.

career in the performing arts is not whatwill ultimately lift themout of poverty, theyagree the experience have given them thecourage and willpower to finish school, ad-vance tertiary education andwork towardstheir respective dreams.“I never knew I could sing this well, but

coming from a poor home, I can’t pin mydreams on singing alone,” says Mali.“I will have to study and find a good job

to support my father and I, and build a bet-ter life for my family.”One thing is sure though, come 6 March,

ment of patrons of the Tyger Valley Shop-ping Centre who have taken to social mediasinceMonday tomake their discontent clearafter an armed robbery at a popular familyrestaurant.The Spur in the shopping centre was

robbed by five men near closing time onSunday evening. The robbers posed as cli-ents before holding up staff and patrons andfleeing with cash and digital goods.Shopping centre spokesperson Laretha

Blom confirmed the robbers had fired oneshot at security guards giving chase, thenfled in a silver vehicle.Some of the comments on TygerBurger’s

With two decades of hits under theirbelts, Dr Victor and the Rasta Re-bels have become synonymous

with “feel-good” music.That’s exactly what fans can expect when

the band take to the stage at the Liqui-FruitAmphitheatre in Paarl for Local is Lekker2015.The band is one of three acts that Cape

Town audiences chose to perform at theshow, the only one in the countrywhere thepublic decide the line-up.The band’s frontman Dr Victor says he’s

looking forward to the outdoor show on Sa-turday 21 March.“I like open-air concerts because everyt-

hing is bigger: bigger dance moves, biggerapplause and a huge sound system to playthrough.”Dr Vic, as he is also known, says the band

is planning to play some of the hits that ma-de them a household name in South Africa.“Most of the songs I’ve had the opportuni-

ty to sing on are crossover songs and theyappeal to all races and the whole family,”the I love to Truck singer says. He’s alsoachieved success with songs such as EddyGrant’s Give Me Hope Joanna that were al-readyhits in the ’60s and ’70s before theRas-ta Rebels recorded their own versions.“I believe a good song will always be a

good song,” he says.Dr Victor’s musical career has seen him

share the stagewith international stars likeGloria Estefan and Janet Jackson, but saystwo of the biggest highlights of his careerare meeting Paul Simon in 1995 and TinaTurner in 1996.He is also involved with local talent

though and even co-wrote and produced thepopular You Touch Me (Horny) album byDawnay. The title track off the album spenta record-breaking 22 weeks at the top of lo-cal charts in 2001.Dr Victor is currently working with the

artist known as Ricardo, whose single I loveyou Daddy was a huge hit in the ’80s.“The brother needs my help and I’m just

reaching out to him as a friend,” he says.Dr Victor also hopes to finish his smooth

jazz guitar project and his long overdueChristmas album this year.For now though, fans can look forward to

seeing him with the Rasta Rebels at Localis Lekker 2015 where they’ll be sharing thestage with Theuns Jordaan and Garth Tay-lor.The show is being presented by Tyger-

Kol. Fred Bosman, hoof van die speur-diens in Brackenfell, sê die vinnige arresta-sie was te danke aan die briljante werk vandie polisiebeamptes aan diens. “Daar is ver-moed dat een van die sentrum se wagte be-trokke was by die roof, omdat hy nie soosdie ander vasgebind was nie,” sê Bosmanen voeg by dat die ondersoek wat gelei hettot die arrestasies, hier begin het.

Community Chest Carnival makes comeback

Amotorcyclist (52) was eventually arrestedafter he tried to avoid road blocks in theBellville/Stikland area on Thursday.

The biker, who was found to be inebria-ted, racked up a list of charges after he refu-sed to stop during joint operations betweentraffic services andMetro Police, a City sta-tement said.

“The motorcyclist refused to stop whenordered to do so bymembers of traffic servi-ces’Ghost Squad,whonoticed thathisnum-ber plate was covered with insulation ta-pe,” the statement said.

As if speeding away wasn’t enough, thedriver collided with one of the traffic vehi-cles after being chased for 15 minutes.

“He was found to be twice over the legalblood-alcohol limit and was arrested fordrunk driving, reckless and negligentdriving, defeating the ends of justice, fai-ling to stop, resisting arrest and maliciousdamage to property.

“It also emerged that the suspect, fromBellville, is anunlicenseddriver,” the state-ment said.

Others who were arrested over the wee-kend, included those in Eerste River andBellville South, during operations focusingon illegal drag-racing.

Traffic services arrested 42 more moto-rists on charges of drunk driving at variousroadblocks, including one in Kraaifontein.

cal specialised services and a loyal corestaff compliment and you have the winningformula to our success,” she said.The hospital is currently adding to its pe-diatric and neonatal ICU wards and isawaiting the approval from theDepartmentof Health to add another 120 beds, two thea-tres andadayhospital.Defty says, construc-tion on this expansion is set to start earlynext year, pending approval.“We always strive to offer a better serviceto our patients and appreciate feedbackfrom the community, positive or negativeto be able to deliver better service,” sheadds.Free health screenings, which includ-ed glucose, blood pressure and cholesteroltests were offered free of charge in the hos-pital foyer on Monday, while those whocould “afford” it, enjoyed some birthdaycake with staff members.

Three weeks ago Allyson Swanepoel fromKraaifontein started knitting and didn’tstop until she had completed 40 brand newsets of newborn baby beanies and booties.

And she is not finished yet.“About 500 babies are born at Carl Brem-

mer each month, many of whom do not ha-ve proper warm clothing to go home in,”she says.

She learned of this plight from a nursingsister at the hospital after she read apamphlet in a wool shop recently.

It reads as follows: “There are a numberof hospitals around the country, in whichbabies are being born and have no warmclothes to wear. In some of these hospitalsthe babies are even wrapped in newspaperand sent home. Many of them become veryill (pneumonia and bronchitis) and areeven dying of this.”

This tragedy softened her heart and sheimmediately bought a bag of wool and setoff home to start the mammoth project.

“The nursing sister even provided mewith a pattern for beanies and booties forpremature babies, as this is often a direneed. The hospital already have a group ofladies knitting for them, but it is simply notenough for the demand. Many of the youngmothers who come in for labour are still atschool and can hardly take care of themsel-ves,” says Allyson.

On a table in her living room she spreadout the cute and colourful knitted sets.

“Fourty down...hundreds to go! But Ican’t do it alone. Likeme, theremust bema-ny other community members out therewho loves knitting, have some spare timeand would like to join a knitting group.”

Die Stad Kaapstad beoog die stigting van advieskomitees vir beskermde omgewings tenopsigte van 17 natuurreservate en beskermde natuuromgewings regoor die stad ingevolgedie Wet op Nasionale Omgewingsbestuur: Beskermde Omgewings, Wet 57 van 2003.

Die advieskomitees vir beskermde omgewings sal saamgestel word ingevolge dieRegulasies oor die Behoorlike Administrasie van Natuurreservate gepubliseer onderGoewermentskennisgewing R99 in Staatskoerant 35021 van 8 Februarie 2012.

Die natuurreservate waarvoor advieskomitees gestig sal word, sluit in Blaauwberg, BothasigFynbos, Botterblom, Bracken (insluitend Perdekop), Durbanville, Edith Stephens, Valsbaai(insluitend Rondevlei, Zeekoevlei, Pelican Park, Slangetjiebos, Zandwolf en die Strandfontein-voëlkykgebied), Helderberg (insluitend Silwerboomkloof), Harmony Flats, Lourensrivier,Steenbras, Tafelbaai (insluitend Rietvlei, Dieprivier, Milnerton-renbaan en Zoarvlei), Tygerberg,Uitkamp-vleigebied, Witzands-waterdraer, Wolfgat en die Zandvlei-riviermonding.

Die komitees se doelwitte is die fasilitering van interaksie, kommunikasie en betrokkenheid endie ontwikkeling van vennootskappe met belanghebbendes en omliggende gemeenskappeten einde die natuurreservate se doelwitte te bevorder.

Die komitees sal die mandaat hê om advies en insette oor strategieë, bestuursplanneen verslae te lewer asook vordering met implementering te monitor, betrokkenheid bybesluitneming te bevorder en natuurreservate se skakeling en integrasie met omliggendegemeenskappe te fasiliteer.

Alle regeringsorganisasies, gebruikersgroepe, gemeenskapsorganisasies,nieregeringsorganisasies, akademiese inrigtings en inwonersverenigings of omliggendegemeenskappe met ’n werklike belang by natuurreservate word genooi om aansoek te doenom lidmaatskap van die advieskomitees.

Die grondwet vir die stigting van advieskomitees vir beskermde omgewings in die StadKaapstad, soos op 5 November 2014 deur die portefeuljekomitee oor energie, omgewings-en ruimtelike beplanning goedgekeur, bepaal hoe hierdie komitees bedryf sal word. Diegrondwet is aanlyn beskikbaar by www.capetown.gov.za/paac.

Aansoekvorms om lidmaatskap kan op die webwerf hierbo afgelaai word en moet van ’nskriftelike, ingeskandeerde mandaat van die organisasie op sy briefhoof vergesel word.Nominasies moet die naam van ’n hoofafgevaardigde bevat en kan ook ’n sekondêreafgevaardigde insluit wat die lid by vergaderings kan verteenwoordig en as ’n kontakpersoonkan dien.

Lede van enige bestaande advieskomitee of bestuursforum wat met die bogenoemdenatuurreservate verbind word, sal weer aansoek moet doen om lidmaatskap van dienuwe advieskomitees. Die bestuursowerheid sal die lidmaatskap vir ’n tydperk van uitersdrie jaar skriftelik bevestig. Daar sal van lede verwag word om volgens die grondwetmet advieskomitees te skakel, inligting in hul kiesafdelings te versprei en kwartaalliksevergaderings by te woon wanneer moontlik.

event, which included a 108km and 64kmroad race and a 35km and 12kmMTB race.The 108km event is an official premier see-ding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour2016 and is the third largest cycle race inthe Western Cape.The 108km men’s event was won by Si-

Bellville, wat nie ’n suksesvolle seisoenbeleef nie, mag dalk net Saterdag ’n keer-punt bereik het met ’n weghol-sege van ’nbeurt en 38 lopies oor die Universiteit vanKaapstad, wat vir 138 lopies in sy tweedebeurt uitgeboul is. Luke Petersen (4/55, vir’n wedstrydontleding van 13/82) en DawieMalan (3/14) was die Bellvilliete wat dieskade aangerig het.

Durbanville (239) kon danksy TinasheChimbambo (57), Pieter Malan (57) en JacoCastle (47) aan WP-klub ’n wenteiken van

230 lopies stel. Die tuisspan het ’n wanke-lende 202/7 aangeteken omdiewedstryd on-beslis te laat eindig.

Dit was ook die geval in Edgemead waardie tuisspan in sy opvolgbeurt teen St. Au-gustine pragtig vasgeskop en 275/6 gesl., op-gestapel het. Die besoekershetmet 149/7 ge-antwoord. Die byeenkomsword ook nou ’n middag/aand-byeenkoms. Dit beteken dat die pro-bleme rondom spitstydverkeer uitgeskakelword en dit ook die ouers die kans bied omdie atletiek by te woon.

Vandie roomvanWP-atlete neemaandiebyeenkoms deel en die toeskouers gaan be-slis getrakteer word op skitterende presta-sies.

Baie atlete van die vier skole was tydensdie afgelope naweek se WP-byeenkoms inBellville in aksie en as dié prestasies as ba-rometer moet dien, word daar met afwag-

ting uitgesien na wat hulle alles Vrydaggaan opdis.

Stellenberg is die verdedigende kampi-oen en voel sekerlik die druk wat daarmeegepaard gaan. Hulle gaan beslis swaar leunop hul sterk hekkiesatlete.

MetWP-atlete soos Janka vanWyk, Euge-ne Kleynhans en Lance Blows en ’n helepaar goeie langsafstand-atlete in die span,gaan dit egter niemaklikwees omhulle vanhul troon af te stoot nie. Tygerberg, metDarnelle Lewies, Austen Davids, MarcoWhitmore, Henko Maartins, Nico van derWesthuizen en Anneke Germishuys in hulgeledere, gaan beslis hul stem dik maak.

Bellville se atlete was reeds vroeg die sei-soen op dreef en met sterre soos Eric Loch-ner,Angelo duToit,AlecHeydenrich, Jessi-caBaker enStefanEngelbrect, kanhulle be-slis nie buite rekening gelaat word nie.

D.F. Malan is vanjaar die gasheer en met’n paar puik atlete in hul geledere, kan ditdalk net vanjaar hul jaar wees.

Met WP-atlete soos Carla Werth, NikaJordaan, Rowhaldo Ratz, Jancke du Toit,McMarshall Hartzenberg, Suné Faure,Mel-indi de Beer, Nicole Pieters en TamzynGroenewald, almal slaggereed, gaan hullebeslis gedug wees.
