Community worker Soraya Sam- son says she deals with many com- plaints from residents every month and little has been done to correct the problem. “The worst affected case I am dealing with now is 62-year-old Jennifer Liebenberg who has had this problem since last year. One month she gets her pension and the next it’s only half and then some- times she gets nothing at all,” she says. Together, they have retained all the statements, which were shown to People’s Post. One statement proves that the transaction was ef- fected for Liebenberg’s pension. But a few seconds later funds were withdrawn from the account. In some instances it is R350 and other times R1 000, the following month R1 350 is withdrawn from her ac- count. Samson says: “We were told to go to the Sassa complaints office in Maitland, but it’s so closed there that I doubt even the president would be able to get in. We really had bad service and still no one can tell us what the reason is or why she doesn’t get her grant.” Liebenberg says she doesn’t know who to blame or where to turn. “If I could only know where the money was going, I’d be satis- fied. But now I am so confused and the debt is piling up because I have to borrow from people to make ends meet. My grant is my only source of income and it is really af- fecting us not to have a stable amount every month,” she says. After numerous attempts, Sassa has made no comment and People’s Post was unable to obtain a re- sponse at the time of going to print. Samson adds that she accompa- nied Liebenberg to the shop where two of the transactions had been made and they viewed the surveil- lance footage, recorded at the ATM. “We saw that at the time of the deductions that no one was at the ATM so we are really con- fused,” she says. Liebenberg is equally stumped. “I only draw my money at one shop but on the receipts it says I drew it at an ATM in Nyanga and at two stores I never visit. How can this be?” she asks. She says in the last year the de- ductions and withdrawals total over R4 000. “No one knows my PIN other than me. When I went to the office last year they told me they can see that someone drew the money with an incorrect PIN. This is the worst part of it because I don’t under- stand how it can be accepted if it’s the wrong PIN,” says the frustrat- ed pensioner. This isn’t the first time question- able deductions were made from Sassa grants. Earlier this year Peo- ple’s Post and our sister publica- tion Tygerburger received numer- ous complaints of deductions rang- ing from R2.50 to R10 being made from pensioners’ accounts (“Sassa pension glitch explained”, People’s Post, 24 July). At the time, director of customer services at Pick n Pay Jonathan Ackerman confirmed the supermarket does not charge any fees for the withdrawal of Sas- sa grant payments. Sassa then in- formed pensioners it had “launched an investigation,” for- warding complaints to service pro- vider Cash Paymaster Services. Despite numerous enquiries, Sassa never clarified the reason for the deductions. But Liebenberg says she does not fall into that group. “My deductions are a lot more than those and no one can tell me why. I have made criminal cas- es that were never investigated and Sassa officials can’t explain where my money is going to. I don’t know where to go or what to do to get the answers I need,” she says. Samson says Liebenberg always collects her grant at the same shop and the shop assistant has offered to be a witness. Liebenberg says although she has tried on numerous occasions to contact Sassa offices they always turn her away. “Why does Sassa not want to in- vestigate the issue? They are tell- ing me they have appointed a pri- vate investigator who will phone me but that call never came. I am left with more questions than an- swers and there are thousands of people crying every month about the same issue. “Somewhere someone must know something.” V Have you had unexplained deductions on your grant? Distemper alertDog owners are cautioned by authorities tovaccinate their pets against canine distem-per (CD).

Last Tuesday, the Cape of Good HopeSPCA issued an important reminder to dogowners to vaccinate all dogs including pup-pies against this aggressive disease.

Wanika Rusthoi, spokesperson for the or-ganisation, says CD is a virus that affectsa dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal andcentral nervous systems, as well as the con-

junctival membranes of the eye.Noticeable signs of distemper include

shedding, thick mucus discharge from theeyes and nose, fever, lethargy and suddenvomiting and diarrhoea.

“The virus does, however, have an incu-bation period of two weeks wherein symp-toms are not noticeable, and some dogs areable to be carriers of the virus withoutshowing symptoms themselves,” saysRusthoi.

“Infection is preventable through up todate vaccinations.”

She urges dog owners to ensure their pet’s

vaccinations are up to date, including an an-nual booster vaccination.

“Pet owners who take their dogs for walksin public areas like parks or beaches, shouldmake sure to visit their vet annually for abooster vaccination against this, and otherviruses which can affect their dog’s health,”she says.

Rusthoi says the Cape of Good Hope’s Gor-finkel Animal Hospital in Grassy Park hasbeen placed under quarantine for the nextfour weeks. Non-emergencies are referredto other animal welfare organisationswhere the facilities are unaffected.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT: SINGLE MOTHER GOES DOOR-TO-DOOR TO RAISE FUNDS

Mom’s efforts to let child hearTARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Every day, come rain or shine, a devotedmother goes from door to door collect-ing used goods to help her make a few

rands.The money isn’t for day-to-day needs. Do-

nations will help her give her daughter thegift of hearing.

Kylen Cornelius has to raise a mammothR57 000 to cover the costs of a cochlear im-plant for her one-year-old daughter Azaria.

“Everyone would like their offspring to behealthy and to provide everything they canfor their children. But financially I’m justnot able to,” she says.

“Even though I know I won’t be able to af-ford the implant, I can’t just sit at home andwait. I started selling anything I can to helpmy child. I know it’s not much, but everylittle bit helps.”

After various tests to see why her one-year-old daughter’s speech was impaired, itwas discovered that Azaria suffers from ahearing disorder.

As a single parent earning a living doing

casual jobs, it will take yearsfor her to raise the moneyneeded for the operation.

But helpful locals havelent a hand.

Surrey Estate residentRashid Isaacs says he an-swered a knock at his doorand was touched when heheard Cornelius’ story.

“She was asking for oldclothes to sell. I saw the des-peration on her face andgave her money towards thesum she requires,” he says.

“What struck me was thatshe told me how she has topluck up the courage everyday to go from door to door, asking for used goods.”

Cornelius initially refusedto take the cash, insisting onsecondhand items in fear that people wouldthink she was a con artist.

“But I convinced her to take the money. She gave me her mom’s number, which Iphoned. She confirmed her daughter’s situ-

ation was legitimate.”Isaacs encourages anyone

who is by the means to makea donation to help the littlegirl hear.

“We shouldn’t only standtogether as a communitywhen things are bad. I wouldlike to appeal to any compa-ny or organisation to helpthis mother. Even when it iscold and raining, she stillwalks every day asking forassistance.”

Cornelius says any littlebit helps.

“I will take anything. Atthe moment she can’t hearanything with her hearingaids. I want her to be able totalk one day with other chil-dren in the neighbourhood

and not just be able to communicate withother deaf people.

“With the help of a cochlear implant thiswill be possible,” she says.V Contact Charmaine Cornelius on 079 424 5493.

Hijackings up by 200%, police confirmMotorists, especially those living in Ronde-bosch East, have been warned to be alert. This comes after an increase in vehicle

theft and hijacking, police confirm.Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant

Nkululeko Mnyaka says the increase hasbeen flagged as a crime trend in the precinct.“The last hijacking incident happened two

weeks ago where three men attempted to hi-jack three cars in the precinct on the samenight. These are crimes we need to clampdown on, so we are using Facebook as ameans of broader communication,” he says.At a recent Community Policing Forum

(CPF)meeting, a report revealed that hijack-ings had increased by 200% over the monthof July. With someCPFmembers blamingpoor po-

lice visibility in these areas, station com-mander Colonel Jan Alexander told the resi-dents that all would be done to ensure thatpolice presence be increased to aid servicedelivery.Lansdowne police took to social media to

alert residents in hotspots how to avoid be-

coming a victim. The tips include precautions to take while

driving, parking and entering your drive-way.

While drivingKeep your car keys ready but not visible

as you approach your vehicle. Before driving inspect the inside, outside

and surroundings for any obstructions.Know in which direction you are heading

and stay alert if you are lost.Make a mental note of the local police sta-

tions and always leave space between youand other cars in case you need to make aquick getaway.Always drive with your doors locked and

your windows rolled up.Avoid driving throughhigh crime or unfa-

miliar areas. If possible avoid driving late at night or

in the early hours of the morning when the

roads are quiet. Also try to drive in the mid-dle lane, keeping away from pedestrians.Try to avoid driving alone and when drop-

ping someone off make sure they are safelyin their car before leaving.Never pick up hitchhikers and try to

change up your driving routine as often aspossible to avoid being watched.

While parking or pulling into yourdrivewayCheck the driveway and street for suspi-

cious pedestrians and parked cars with oc-cupants. If you spot either drive past andcome back later.Keep your driveway well lit with no

shrubs or places for perpetrators to hide.Get to know your neighbours and their ve-

hicles and note when your pets change theirhabits as a perpetrator may have overpow-ered them. When arriving home late make sure the

area is well lit and have someone meet yououtside. If you need to open the gate yourself,

switch off the car and exit.If you have young children, take the key

out of the car as a bargaining tool and if youhave older children let them exit the carwith you in case a hijacker hits.Never sit in a stationary vehicle without

being aware of your surroundings. Sleepingin a car is especially dangerous. If youare involved inahijackingarmyour

tracking device if applicable and report theincident to the nearest police station as soonas possible.Know the car make, model, colour, regis-

tration andVIN number, and have anythingelse that will be of help to track the vehicledown on hand at all times. Also keep pictures of your car on your

computer for reference. If you feel threatened or would like to re-

port a hijacking phone CrimeStop on08600 10111 if you are out of the area orLansdowne Police Station on (021) 700 9000.

LANSDOWNE: UNDERSTAFFING AT POLICE STATION CAUSES UPSET

Give us more cops – residentsSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

More officers on the street. This is what residents living in

the Lansdowne policing precinct isdemanding.Homeowners recently attended a sector

imbizo to raise their concerns with thenewly appointed station commissionerand cluster commander.About 50people fromLansdowne,Groen-

vlei, Ottery andWettonwere introduced tothe stationmanagement andwere affordedthe opportunity to raise issues with Nyan-gaCluster commanderMajor-GeneralRob-bie Robberts. The attendants’ main concern was un-

derstaffing at the station as well as a lackof resources.Groenvlei resident Ebrahim Hull said

more officers are needed in the precinct asthe manpower shortage is affecting policeresponse times.“Numerous promises of additional vehi-

cles and officers have been made since thebeginning of the year. We need some hard

evidence that this will be implemented,”he said. But the station is not as understaffed as

residents believe, Robberts responded.“We have a fewmore in some departmentsand a few short in others. I assure you Iam fighting every day with my superiorsto ensure we get more manpower for mycluster, but it isn’t in my hands,” he said.Neighbourhood watch members agreed

that response times were dire, adding thatunreliable sector van cellphones added tothe issue.“We risk our lives everyday to dopatrols

in the community and we get very littlesupport from the police. We try to phoneour sector vans and the phones are off. Theexcuse? ‘The battery died.’ This is unac-ceptable!” one said.Robberts responded: “Wehave 12 reserv-

istswhoshouldbeonpatrolwith theneigh-bourhood watches at least over the week-ends. As for the flat batteries, if the stationcannot afford the chargers Iwill personallydonate four because these cellphonesshould never be off.”Another homeowner however had noth-

ing but praise for the new station com-mander, saying that positive change hascome about since the new station com-mander, Colonel Jan Alexander, took thehotseat.

Alexander said: “I am here to work andtake the station forward through ensuringservice delivery. I amalways available andyour concerns will be addressed, that I as-sure you.”

EDUCATION: ONLINE PLATFORM BOOSTS NUMBERS

Study at theclick of a mouseNICOLE MCCAIN

@nickymccain

In an attempt to make tertiayry educationmore accessible, UCT is looking online togrow classes. With the university’s facilities only al-

lowing for just over 26 000 students, virtualclassrooms are now allowing the universityto make learning available to more stu-dents, across the continent.

This follows on a report from the Centrefor Higher Education Transformationwhich found 2.7 million school leavers arenot accessing education, training or em-ployment.

The university recently launched threepostgraduate diplomas online to enable stu-dents across Africa to study with interac-tive support.

The Across Africa programmes, offeredby UCT’s Faculty of Commerce, in partner-ship with GetSmarter, combine the use ofa flexible and interactive online educationplatform with face-to-face learning.

Across Africa managing director JacquesRousseau added: “Having road-tested theAcross Africa online education platform

myself in teaching a class of 1 500 students,it is clear that students appreciate – andgreatly benefit from – the opportunity towork on their own schedules, as well as toreceive peer and instructor support virtual-ly on-demand.”

Due to the nature of the online learningplatform, a large group of students can beaccommodated at any given time.

While the course is currently focused onpostgraduate studies, undergraduate pro-grammes are soon to follow, says Get-Smarter chief academic officer Rob Pad-dock.

“We will be introducing eight new cours-es into market by 2015 , to add to our currentportfolio of 55 courses (90% of which arepresented in conjunction with UCT), as wellas our expanding our postgraduate pro-grammes post-2015, in partnership with theuniversity,” he says.

GetSmarter offers extensive paymentplans for their short courses and postgradu-ate programmes to allow students to pay fortheir studies over a certain period of time,Paddock says.

The course will start in February andUCT has received around 200 applications.

No fines during Book WeekAnyone who owes City of Cape Townlibraries a fine will have a free passduring National Book Week.

It runs from Monday 1 to Sunday 7September with the theme Goingplaces.

The week aims to promote and em-brace the value of reading and is ajoint initiative between the Depart-ment of Arts and Culture and theSouth African Book DevelopmentCouncil, says a City statement.

During this week library patronscan return overdue material to Citylibraries without having to pay fines.

The theme focuses on the power ofbooks and how they can take us plac-es – both in terms of progress and im-agination. Reading statistics showonly 14% of the South African popula-tion are active book readers and only5% of parents read to their children.

Belinda Walker, City Mayco mem-ber for Community Services and Spe-cial Projects, says: “National BookWeek is an important initiative in en-couraging the nation to value readingas a fun and pleasurable activity andto showcase how reading can easilybe incorporated into one’s daily life-style.”

Returning long overdue books issomething everyone loathes doing, she says.

“It leaves us feeling like naughty

school children, sheepishly ap-proaching the library counter mut-tering excuses. But any library mate-rials returned late during NationalBook Week are exempt from a fine forthis week only. It provides a grace pe-riod for all those who have beenputting off taking their long overduebooks back to the library.”

Ninnie Steyn, director of Libraryand Information Services, says: “Weknow that with today’s fast-paced life-styles, returning library books is of-ten just one item on a long list ofthings to do. We want to provide peo-ple with an incentive to bring backforgotten library books.”

If you consider the numbers ofbooks being circulated by CapeTown’s libraries, it’s easy to see whykeeping tabs on books is no smalltask. Cape Town boasts 100 libraries, three satellite libraries and a mobilelibrary service. Almost 12 millionpeople visited the City’s libraries dur-ing 2013 and 11.7 million books wereborrowed.

Nearly 90 000 new members joinedthe City’s libraries in the last yearand about 900 000 people attendedover 22 000 library programmes inthe same period. These include read-ing, literacy, gender and HIV/Aidsprogrammes as well as storytellingsessions and DVD screenings.

KENWYN: CHUKKER ROAD RESOLUTION OVERDUE

Drive to curbroad mayhemSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Stop streets, yield signs, traffic lightsand speed bumps are someof themeas-ures local councillors hoped to imple-

ment to help curb speeding and recklessdriving along Chukker Road. This comes after outraged residents com-

plained to their councillor about speedstersracing down the curved road at all hoursof the day.InMay last year, ward councillor Anthea

Greenput forward themotion to implementtraffic calming measures. At the time, she said she had enquired

about the installation of speed bumps, butbecause the road is classified as a tertiaryclass three road, this means there is a highrate of traffic on this stretch. But residentFrankDavids says it is unac-

ceptable to say nothing can be done.“If we can’t put speed bumps there, then

surely a speed camera or a robot should suf-fice. At the moment it is notorious forspeeding and the curve in the road makesit so dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists andother roadusers. Somethingmust be done,”he fumes.Green requested that the local subcouncil

support a motion for the City’s traffic androads departments to urgently implementappropriate measures to ensure the safetyand the reduction of speed along the roadwith immediate effect.ChukkerRoadhasbecomeabusyarterial

byway for motorists exiting Wetton Roadand the M5 highway.Davids says it remains a residential area

and should be treated as such.“There are young children living here as

well and they cannot play outside becausesome motorists treat this like a highway. This is a residential area and the speed re-strictions are clear, but theseunrulymotor-ists have no regard for that,” he insists.Kenwyn Ratepayers’ and Civic Associa-

tion deputy chairperson Mark Klein-schmidt says he doesn’t think it is a viableoption. “Because of its status, we were in-formed it is unlikely speed bumps and ro-bots can be implemented,” he says. The applicationhas since been tabled and

left to public participation, but not muchhas been done tomove the process forward.Kleinschmidt says although itmaynot be

implemented, as a PR councillor he willcontinue to fight for some form of roadcalming on behalf of the community.“A speed camera, raised pedestrian

crossings or an off-ramp onto Wetton Roadfrom the M5 are all suggestions we havemade but have not received any confirma-tion yet.Wewill, however, continue to fightfor something to be done. If everyone ad-hered to the speed limit it would be fine butthat is not the case, so something must bedone,” Kleinschmidt says.Subcouncil chairperson George March

confirmed the itemwas tabled and support-ed in 2013 but has since been closed.Green says it is not the end. “We have

now exhausted all possible avenues and themotion has been closed. The City has how-ever suggested we add street lights andchevrons on the bends tomake it a bit morevisible. Other measures will be looked intoas a way forward,” she says.

You can’t just say what you like. Not in person – for thosewith courage – and certainly not via social media.

Too many people think – mistakenly – that Facebook,Twitter and Instagram allow individuals and groups freereign to speak their mind. Not so.

This is the thinking of unintelligent cowardice thathides behind security settings. Anonymity on social me-dia is an illusion.

It is also a domain that, contrary to any attempts at se-crecy or even use of code language, can and is circumvent-ed.

How so? Because, free speaker, people talk. Even thoseindividuals some may consider close associates spill thebeans when their own safety, job security or status in soci-ety – however imagined – is threatened.

Who, then, stands on the side of the free speaker? Lookaround you and count them. Perhaps not even one?

There have been court cases in which people who ventvia social media have been brought to book.

A group of Strandfontein girls have found out how de-meaning others can be when their photos were used onFacebook to harm their character.

The photos were found to have been sourced from thegirls’ own Facebook posts and reused elsewhere withouttheir permission or even knowledge. This Facebook pagehas subsequently been closed.

Is there really such a place or space where people cansay just as they please? Hardly likely when the aim is todemean, break down the character of another for whatev-er criminal or petty reason, or simply because they thinkthey can get away with it.

The hour glass turns against such actions. Beyond thesheer childishness of it, there is a resident evil that re-sides within the character of a person who seeks redressthrough social media. Then, again, if Facebook is youronly friend, such people should seriously look in the mir-ror. Actions, like cyber-bullying, have consequences.

Driven overthe edgeOn 17 July the driver of bus 4791 close to Ath-lone Police Station was almost the cause ofme and my family being in what could havebeen a fatal accident.

Apart from speeding he overtook me on abend. Although there were two lanes he tookthe bend at such a speed and in doing socame into our lane forcing me to brake to en-sure my family remains alive. He did noteven have the decency to apologise.

I would love to know where you find yourdrivers as I have seen an increase in baddriving from Golden Arrow bus drivers. They have no regard for human life and asa company you have a social responsible to-wards the public. This kind of driving is ab-solutely unacceptable.

Disgusted and dismayed.L JULIUS,EmailGolden Arrow Bus Services Public Rela-tions manager Bronwen Dyke responds:

Golden Arrow Bus Services would like toconfirm we have received Mr Julius’s com-plaint and that we have responded to him viaemail. He raises an extremely importantpoint and we are grateful for the opportunityto address the issue here.

Golden Arrow’s drivers undergo inten-sive training and complete certified testingto ensure they are properly qualified totransport people on a public service. Unfor-tunately when they have passed their testand are out on the road, a small minority ofdrivers feel it is no longer necessary to drivein the manner expected of them. This is un-acceptable and we are just as appalled as MrJulius.

We have various measures in place tomonitor driving behaviour, but there will al-ways be some incidents that fall through thecracks, that is where passengers and thepublic play a vital role. If anyone sees anybehaviour, driving or otherwise, that theythink is unacceptable please inform us as MrJulius has. This information can be passedon via 0800 65 64 63, [email protected] our Facebook page.

If possible please provide the bus number, location and/or route and time of incident. If using the Facebook page please rememberto include your contact details.

District Six: plea for justiceI write this with sadness and sorrow inmy heart.

I listened to many other peoples’s sor-row and pain as we peacefully picketedin Hanover Street on Saturday.

It was indeed a great injustice for us,the people of District Six, and I’m suremany other people of other areas who hadalso forcefully been removed.

In District Six we lived in peace andharmony with one another, regardless ofour creed, traditions and race.

I attended St Marks School, part of theland CPUT is currently occupying.

Though I’m Muslim we attended StMarks Church every Friday or Thursday, and we simply could not wait for thesedays because we would only return afterthe maths period.

I have such good memories as a childliving in District Six.

I look up at Table Mountain and I clear-ly remember as a child when the whiteclouds descended, our parents utteredthese words: “Daar kom die wit tafeldoekoor die berg.”

I always tell my children that we grewup in the shadow of Table Mountain.

Then I look at the students arriving bybus, some of them are not from CapeTown, and I wonder if they know any-thing about our suffering and pain whenwe were forcefully removed, and the his-tory of District Six, not to mention thatwe once lived there in peace and harmo-ny.

Please don’t get me wrong, I have noth-ing against the students.

I’m all for education. Education is pow-er, and these young people are deter-mined to learn.

They are the future leaders. They should be the ones bringing about

change for the betterment of the poor andneedy and especially the injustices.

I believe without a doubt the land ofDistrict Six belongs to the people whoonce lived there.

People shed many tears when theywere removed.

The land claims ministry must realisethe great difficulties and sorrow people

suffered when they were removed fromDistrict Six and elsewhere.

There are many stories to be told.Maybe time should be taken so that

people can tell their stories when theywere removed, the trauma and sufferingwhile living on the Cape Flats and else-where, and the happiness before their re-moval.

Just then maybe they might under-stand what people had endured.

If the management of CPUT is just, whynot give back of the vacant land thatrightfully belongs to the people of DistrictSix?

Why not build a residence elsewhere? My mom is 88 years of age; my dad

passed on.She is still deprived of moving back to

her beloved District Six.When she asked me on my return after

picketing, what was said I could not an-swer her as we were refused entry.

I could see her eyes brimming withtears.

I’m appealing to our government to re-pair the damage that was done not justto us by the past government, but to allour people who were forcefully removedfrom other areas too.

And the ones occupying informal set-tlements and backdoor dwellers too.

Human dignities must be restored. We are not asking for much; we just

want justice to prevail and live in peaceand harmony with one another again inDistrict Six.

Though we know things will never bethe same again, just to live in our belovedDistrict Six again will bring so much joyand happiness to our hearts.

So many of our parents, friends andfamily have perished. How many of usmust still perish before we have the op-portunity of returning to our beloved Dis-trict Six?

Please make us realise our dreams. Why must there always be demonstra-

tions and rioting in our country beforepeople’s voices are heard and justice pre-vails?

We are just asking for justice.JAMINA SALIE

System aids in enrolmentsThe provincial education department haslaunchedanonline systemto simplifypupilenrolments.Work started on the School Admissions

Management Information (Sami) systemlast year and saw the first implementationon 8 August to manage enrolment of pupilsfor 2015.The systemmakes it easier for schools to

keep track of applications and share infor-mation with other schools and officials. The education department developed the

system in collaboration with the Centre fore-Innovation (CEI) to tackle the challengesof out-of-date information on pupil place-ment, tracking information on areas mostunder pressure, and the need to crosscheck

multiple waiting lists.Provincial education minister Debbie

Schäfer says the system is theway forward.“Having information such as this availa-

ble to us will greatly assist us in not onlyensuring pupils are placed before the 2015school year starts, but will also assist inplacing pupils who enrol late,” she says. The system will show the number of

available places at a school, and thenumber of applications per grade at school, circuit and district level. The systemcangenerate lists of pupils ac-

cepted at more than one school and parentswill have until Friday 26 September to de-cide which school they would like theirchild to attend.

TASMIN CUPIDO@TazzCup

The challenge for the WP Rugby’s SuperLeague A Grand Challenge trophy cul-minates this weekend.

But the UCT boys will have their titlehopes and fate in the hands of one of theirbiggest rivals, Hamiltons RFC, as the menfrom Green Point travel to Stellenbosch totake on Maties on Saturday. The Ikey Tigers played their final match

of the first round, which determines the ulti-matewinners of the top tier of Cape club rug-by, when they took on Victorians in Stellen-bosch last Friday evening. And they continued with the superb form

they have shown throughout the season, thumpingVics 20-71 at theDanieCravenSta-dium.Going into this weekend’s clashes, Ikeys,

who will not be in action this weekend, willremain at the top of the league – just threepoints ahead of Maties. But Hammies, who are currently in third

place on 56 points, will face amammoth taskon Saturday. Maties are the only unbeatenteam in the league and will look to snatchthe top spot and trophy from their arch ri-vals – especially after their losses to UCT inthe Varsity Cup.

The Maties/Hammies encounter will un-doubtedly be the biggest clash of the SLA.The other SLA results of Southern Sub-

urbs teams last weekend: SK Walmers vsDurb-Bell 5-68; Hammies vs Tygerberg 45-19;False Bay vs Bellville 68-0; Primrose vs Mat-ies 17-50.ThisweekendSouthernSuburbswill be in

action in the following SLAmatches: Matiesvs Hamiltons; UWC vs Primrose; Victoriansvs SK Walmers; False Bay vs NNK.

V In Super League B, the biggest clash thisweekendwill see Villager RFC host Sir Low-rians in a top-of-the-table clash in Clare-mont.The Dirty Whites will look to improve on

their 7-5 victory overPnielVillagers last Fri-day evening. The match will also determinethe SLBwinner and automatic SLAcontend-er for next weekend.Meanwhile, Surrey Estate Rangers will

travel to the Northern Suburbs to take onBrackenfell RFC. Rangers will look to puttheir 12-24 loss to rivalsCollegians lastweek-end behind them as they tackle a side accus-tomed to playing at their muddy home. The Surrey Estate side are still awaiting

the outcome of their scheduled matchagainst Sir Lowrians two weeks ago. Thematch was called off by the referee as thefield was deemed unsuitable for play. WP

Rugbyhas yet tomake a decision on themat-ter.Collegians will look to continue their win-

ning momentum as they host GoodwoodRFC in Lentegeur.

V In Super League C Violets RFC contin-ued their winning form when they beatRaithbyUniversals 23-19 atChukkerRoad inLansdowne last Saturday; MIT Rangerswere defeated 7-11 by Stellenbosch-Corona-tions; and Silvertree RFC played to an 18-18stalemate with Northerns at Malta Park inSybrand Park. This weekend sees the following Southern

Suburbs teams in action in SLC: Fran-schhoek United vs Violets; Northerns vsMIT Rangers; and Silvertree vs Strand.

V The following matches will be played inthe Champions League this weekend: YoungStars vs YoungWesleys and Masiphumelelevs Young Ideas.

V In the Southern League, the followingteams will do battle: Titans vs Thistle; Re-treat vs Richmond Rangers; Peninsula vsYoung Brothers; and Bishop Lavis vs Rock-lands.

V The City League will see the followingmatches being played: Police vs Temper-ance-Cities; Progress vs Hamediehs; Watso-nia vs Perseverance; and Tech-Gardens vsBusy Bees.

Success for ASD at Engen KOTASMIN CUPIDO

@TazzCup

ASDCape Townhave lifted theirmaidenEngen Knockout Challenge trophy af-ter beating Liverpool-Portland FC in

the tournament final at the weekend. The Claremont-based side scored one goal

to none to be crowned the Cape’s best under-17 team at Stephan Reagan Sports Complexin Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain on Sunday 24August.The lone goal came from theboot of striker

Caleb Sampson. The 11th edition of the tournament, of

which People’s Post is the print media spon-sor, saw 16 teams from across the peninsulavie for the coveted title, hefty cash prize andtrophy. The final was an evenly contested affair,

despite ASD, who were the losing finalistslast year, dominating both the territory andpossession statistics throughout the match. The local lads fromPortlandwere the first

side to bother the goalkeeper in the firstquarter, as a strike from outside the boxwassaved by ASD goalkeeper Darren Johnson. The shot brushed Johnson’s fingertips andwent out for a corner. The corner kick was punched out by the

goalkeeper as he moved out of the box andthe deflection fell into the lap of a Liverpool-Portland player, who struck a shot on thevolley. But his shot hit the crossbar. In the secondquarter,ASDagaindominat-

ed the statistics and started to put the pres-sure on the Liverpool-Portland defence. While they managed to penetrate the defen-sive line, their attacks on goal were dealtwith by the Liverpool-Portland goalkeeper,

who was the team’s stand-out performer. At the death of the first half, ASD threat-

ened to score again, but the Liverpool-Port-land ’keeperwas again up to the task, savinghis side from going into the half-time breaka goal down. The second half continued as the first,

with both teamsmanaging to break throughthe other’s defence, but their weak shots ongoal were easily kept away from the net byboth goalkeepers.Twelve minutes into the half Liverpool-

Portland and their fans were celebrating asthey thought they had scored the openinggoal when a shot found the net.But their celebrations were short-lived as

referee Jerome Damon blew his whistlewhen the assistant referee found the “goals-corer” to be offside.A fewminutes later, the tournamentmade

history as the first female referee, NoleneSwarts, took over the whistle from Damonwho was injured during the course of thematch. And it was just five minutes later that

Sampson sunk the hopes of Liverpool-Port-land and their supporters, bringing an endto their dream run.ASD will now represent the Cape at the

EngenChampsofChamps inSoweto inOcto-ber.They will take on PE Sundowns, AmaZu-

lu, Harmony Academy, Supersport UnitedAcademy and Bidvest Wits Juniors, who allwon the Engen Knockout Challenge in theirrespective regions. This year’s Cape Town Challenge lived up

to its theme of Be Your Best, as several play-ers stood out throughout the weekend. Hel-lenic FC’s Riyaaz Ismail was named the de-

fender of the tournament for his modern-style of play, marshalling his team andaiding on attack when necessary. The best striker was Glendene United’s

Jody Jansen, who scored eight goals, heldthe ballwell and ran into spaces. Hewas alsothe tournament’s top goalscorer.Johnson, who conceded only three goals

throughout the weekend, was named goal-keeper of the tournament, while ChippaUnited’s Heinrich van Zyl was rewarded forthe tournament’s first hat-trick and quick-est goal. The player of the tournament was also

named thebestmidfielder –AtlanticNacion-al’s Robyn-Lee Baatjies walked away withboth accolades.Grassy Park’s Crusaders FC won the fair

play team of the tournament award for theirexemplary discipline on and off the field;Liverpool-Portland coach Mark Brown woncoach of the tournament; andMandizeMziziof Cape District LFA was named referee ofthe tournament.V For more photos of the Engen Knockout Challenge, visit www.peoplespost.co.za.
